The place look so homey and the customer service is top tier. My boyfriend and I talked about this spot during his college days and I’m glad I finally got to visit with him. We both got beef shawarma pita and it was gone fast. So delicious! There was so much meat. I was about to buy the baklava but the lady up front was kind enough to give it complimentary. That itself was also really good. Will definitely back again. Thank you!
A great place to eat and a wonderful place to be! I came here to get some Mediterranean food and RIGHT when you walk in it is sooo cozy inside this restaurant. Well decorated, it feels like being served by family. Everyone was genuinely kind and even gifted us some baklava! I definitely recommend Sam's, 9.5/10
I’ve been going here for a decade and Sam’s is still my version of Disney Land. Truly a magical place. Sam is the most genuine and lovely person who is absolutely a pillar of the community. Any chance I have to go back to Davis, I make it a priority to visit and get a spicy mixed over rice. 100000000000000000/10, my number one recommendation anywhere.
I had the falafel in pita and baklava, 100% authentic flavors, and great taste! The staff was super nice and friendly
Excellent customer service. The staff here are very welcoming and prepare takeout orders very quickly. They are now able to take card payments. The spicy shawarma has sriracha on it, which tastes amazing! I recommend the spicy mix shawarma on pita. The portion sizes are perfect.
Sam’s has been a part of my life for over 20 years. I started coming here as a student at UC Davis, and all these years later, it still feels like coming home. So many late nights, casual dinners, and spontaneous meetups with friends have started (or ended) at Sam’s. The food has always hit the spot—comforting, flavorful, and made with care—but it’s more than just the food that keeps me coming back. It’s the feeling of familiarity, the kindness of the staff, and the sense that this place has quietly stood as a constant through so many different seasons of life. Thank you, Sam’s, for being more than just a restaurant—you’ve been a piece of my story.
Love. Super crispy and moist falafel over a fresh salad with excellent quality veggies and pickles. The flavorful hummus side was also excellent with a drizzle of olive oil and veggies and pickles to dip along with the warm flat bread. Easily in my Top 2 for falafel and I can’t wait to return for another go and to try the baklava.
The food was really good and the service was very friendly. The price was quite reasonable. I got the falafel euro and it had just the right combination of ingredients and was very juicy. It also came with the delicious hot sauce. The service was very friendly and welcoming.
Still the same as how I remembered it over 15 years ago. Ordered the chicken shawarma and chicken kabob with pita bread. Fast service, friendly staff, and clean.
Sam's is a Davis classic. High quality gyros and rice plates. Extremely flavorful. The rice plates are filling, but if order a gyro i usually get fries on the side too. They take credit card, but with a fee. My personal favorite restaurant in Davis.

Amazing is not the right word! Authentic is also not the correct word, I highly recommend this place, ask for the Greek salad and top it with any protein!
I would vote Sam for mayor of Davis. He is the man, his shawarma, both chicken and beef are the best shawarma I have had. Awesome family run business, a staple in Davis casual dining, a local Favorite, a hidden gem, a must try if you are new to Davis. What more can I say? We love you Sam.
I've been eating in that restaurant since December 2014. It is such an amazing place. Their chicken kobab is the best and their burger is so delicious too. The family members that work in that restaurant are so friendly and smiling all of the time. I really recommend this place.
This place has the best shawarma I've ever eaten. The atmosphere is wierd with bad art on the walls, seating is sparce and cramped, decor is all over the place, but it doesn't matter! Service is stellar and the food is AMAZING. Get the shawarma! And some Baklava too. It's a cash only place so bring some cash. So. Good. Atmosphere 2/5 Service 5/5 Food 5/5
Been going there for 8 years and the food still tastes as good as the first time. The cook (father and the owner) is a very polite and genuine guy. He remembers his customers and makes them feel very special. I love his kids for providing top notch service. Must try!
Sam's is always the best! Has been awhile since my husband I could make it to Davis but we finally got the chance and it's still just as amazing. I dream about the beef shawarma on rice. Never have had a bad experience here.
Sam's is hands down the best. Just took my son back there since he moved away years ago and he hadn't been since the move to the new location. He ordered his favorite, the chicken shawarma, and said it is still the best he's ever had. Sam himself came out to greet us and chat and even treated us to balaclava desserts. Just go if you're in Davis.
The best shawarma and Mediterranean food in this area, by far! Jenna's amazing and super welcoming, she makes us feel right at home every time we go there. Highly recommend!!
My friend boasted about the food at UC Davis so we took a trip out to Sacramento and stopped here. This a family owned place on campus that has been around for years. It's small, quick and great quality food. I loved the gyro rolls we got. So flavorful and juicy. Since we were food hopping, I decided to share, but that was a big mistake. I'm still craving it. Worth the drive up from the East Bay.
Went with my friend we were looking for a reasonable price lunch. We had falafel sandwitch, fries and drink. The falafel sandwitch was sooo good i felt that with each bites i went back home to egypt. The taste was authentic and the vegetables fresh. The songs in the background had a very nostalgic effect on me 😍😍😍. The ladies in the ciunter and the server were so sweet and nice. I will miss this restaurant. Too bad i had to go back to kansas.
Sam's is one of my favorite restaurants in Davis-it's my go-to place to take visiting friends! It has a charming atmosphere with cool paintings and is family owned. I have been going here for years and absolutely LOVE the mixed schwarama. It's cash only but totally worth the trip to the bank first! If you haven't checked it out, go go go!
Sam's is probably the best food in Davis imo. Always delicious and fresh ingredients. Sam and family are always very friendly. A Davis staple.
Sam's is probably THE best place anywhere (in California) that we have found for Mediterranean food. Generally we order the chicken shwarma on pita, and while the vegetables aren't anything special, the chicken is so soft, textured and flavorful that nothing compares. The pita is also tastefully soft but far from soggy - everything just comes together for some amazing food. We live in Fresno and sometimes when going to San Francisco, we tack 90 minutes on to our trip to stop by Sam's. This has been a favorite with my parents since before I was born in the 90's, and they've never once been disappointed!
It's hard to describe the magic that is Sam's. Sure, it's the best shawarma & falafel I have had anywhere in the world (including the middle east). Or the fact they seem to find ripe tomatoes in the winter. Sure, their personalized service means that they always remember to include 3 x the hot sauce (homemade, scrumptious) with my order.... But the true beauty really comes down to Sam himself, and his children. When my husband, my two kids and I walk in to the restaurant, we honestly feel like cherished friends & family- Let me tell you, as someone who is far from home, this is invaluable. I know I'm not alone... Just scroll through his facebook page of UCD students and profs who feel the same. Even my octogenarian parents insist on visiting Sam every time they are in from Canada. Sam never fails to spoil us, and always greets my kids with a wink and a joke. Sam says he is lucky to have all of these friends and customers ... The truth is... It is we who are lucky to have him, his children, and his establishment. But seriously... Try the falafel and hot sauce. And the lamb. And the pita. And the hummus.... (For bonus points, check out videos of Sam dancing & playing the Oud.!!)
I've been eating here for 20 years, ever since the old location. Never have i been disappointed! Thank you Sam for your consistency in quilty food and friendly service!!
Some of the best beef shawarma I've ever had, it reminds me a lot of the gyros I grew up eating! They serve the shawarma on rice or on a pita bread, both ways are great though and have their pros and cons. I usually just get both lol. My wife usually orders the chicken shawarma which is fantastic as well, a lot of the same flavor is there but it's a little less seasoned than the beef.
Beef shawarmas are the best here! The fries are always nice and hot as well. There is a different special everyday of the week and they usually give you a free drink. The owner is always super nice and friendly.
Great food and lots of it for the price!
Amazing restaurant and great service. Food is delicious and service more than perfect. In my opinion, it is the best service I have ever had in restaurant. Also, they are generous when they prepare the food for you.
The best restaurant in town and Jenjoona Is the best
Everyone loves Sam's. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Sam and his family, who run the place, are warm and friendly. The environment is lively and welcoming. This is my favorite fast-food place in Davis.
Sam and his family are the most generous and hospitable people in Davis. They make delicious Mediterranean cuisines with selections of desserts like baklava. The dining area is decorated with beautiful murals and pottery that resemble their heritage. Give this place a try because they serve the best shawarma I've ever had.
The food is delicious and large servings. Small inside seating area but outside patio area looks great and inviting in decent weather. Ordering at the counter was a little awkward but food was brought to the table.
Excellent Middle Eastern food right here in little Davis! Love the falafel and chicken shawarma. Vegetables are fresh and toppings are flavorful.
Thank you! The food was fresh and delicious and everyone was kind. My shawarma arrived instantly and we ate on the quiet deck outside.
Dare I say this is my favorite restaurant on the planet! People who know me know if I have a choice of where to eat, I choose Sam's. Not only is the food always phenomenal (and I've been going there for 15+ years), but the people are wonderful, and the service is superb. My kids are even obsessed!
The mixed shawarma over rice is one of the best things I've eaten in Davis- great seasoning, a good quantity of halal meat, and it just gets better with each bite. It also comes with a light tomato and cucumber salad and sauce if you want- but they were super nice and since I'm not a fan of yogurt they substituted it with extra rice. For less than $10 the size and quality of the plate are a great deal. I kinda wish they gave pita on the side like Halal guys but it's still good without it. Another issue is that you'll have to wait til 3 PM, but it's well worth the wait. I've also had the mixed shawarma with the pita bread (I came for lunch) and it was pretty good- I thought it was comparable to Halal Guys. They also have halal hamburgers and other halal options that were pretty solid. For shawarma and halal this is definitely the place to go in Davis!
Best shawarma I've had. Friendly family and the food is always as good as the first time. More than a local college joint, this spot is worth a quick affordable stop.
Sam's is wonderful. They have, hands down, one of the best falafels I've ever had. Certainly it is the best in davis by far. French fries with some sort of spice dusted on them are also quite tasty. This is a little family owned place so Dad is usually cooking and daughter is usually running the register. Sometimes they are super busy (think right at noon mid quarter) and it gets a little slow, but everyone is incredibly sweet. There is also a little bit of parking right behind the place-- A rarity in downtown Davis. And remember to bring cash, they don't take cards.
This is my favorite restaurant in Davis. This family run jewel serves the freshest food. Sam is there preparing the food from early in the morning. My favorite is the chicken kabob on pita. My wive’s choice is the Greek vegetable on pita. We order it to go at least once a week. The chicken is marinated and to perfection. This is truly great tasting food.
Consistently excellent. Good service, food and setting. Deserving of local staple status.
It was such a friendly atmosphere, the portions were appropriate and the food was authentic.
Great Mediterranean food! Hummus, gyros, and bowls were amazing and always great service!
Such amazing food! I’m not a local but if I’m in the area I plan my commute just so I can hit Sam’s, it’s honestly that delicious. This one’s absolute gem, Davis consider yourselves fortunate!
Sam’s restaurant is one of my favorite places in Davis. The whole family is always so kind, and generous, and the food is always incredibly delicious. The falafel on pita is my go-to, and their restaurant is the perfect lunch spot for students as it is right off of campus. Don’t forget to try to baklava!
A really excellent little restaurant! I thought their hummus was delicious, as were their fresh pita breads. I had the chicken kabob on pita sandwich and it was really good! Easily one of my favorite Mediterranean meals I've eaten in recent memory, highly highly recommended!!
The food is delicious and at a good price. The people are very friendly and Sam himself is amazing. Can never go wrong with this place.
The shawarma plate is sublime and the side salad is great!
Best Mediterranean food I've ever had in my life hands down! 🙌 Everything is juicy and rich in flavor, too bad I live miles away but will continue to come each time I visit! 🙌
Amazing people, Fantastic food, Great portions, & Welcoming environment. Couldn't ask for anything more. Worth trying and will be driving 45m -1hr again! I'm so happy and so full.
Beef shawarma was amazing! Service was great and the portions are huge. Outdoor patio is really nice on a warm day.
This is my favorite restaurant in the world. Sam and his family are the best folks around. They put endless love and hard work into their food and their service. I've never had a better shawarma anywhere.
My daughters and I really loved this place. Besides the friendly atmosphere, the food was delicious and the service was great. Will definitely be back.
Sam is a total delight. Lovely food and service. Thank you!
I got the beef shawarma gyro and my wife got the beef shawarma on rice which also came with a small salad. Prices are very good and the food is always amazing. We always stop here on our way to the Bay area from Sacramento.
Sam’s is my favorite food spot in Davis. The food has always been spot on and service is fast.
Hands down one of the best Mediterranean spots I've ever had! The owner is a really nice man that has a great relationship with customers. Very nice outdoor seating patio, right across the farmers market! The chicken shwarma on pita and fries were $12, which is insane I highly recommend you give them a try.
Softest shawarma cuts I've had in my life. Whenever I'm in Davis, this is always a must visit
AMAZING food! I always get the chicken and rice and it's my favorite. They have the best falafel I've ever tasted. Great food
Really delicious food! We ordered the chicken kabob in pita and enjoyed every bite. The staff was incredibly kind. Beautiful music and art on the walls. It felt like home :)
First off you walk in and you're greeted by the 2 daughters of the owner of the restaurant. Very traditional decorations and music of Palestinian culture. The order options are straight forward but to get lamb you have to ask. The prices are medium for the amount of food you get. The portions are very generous and the food is delicious. Service is very accommodating as well. If you go try the mix shawarma platter and baklava dessert.
Would highly recommend. The cashier/server was so kind and welcoming. The music they play inside is also good. Delicious falafel on pita. The tzatziki sauce was a little light on veggies, but it was still tasty. Also admirable they are doing their best work even during Ramadan.
Best shawarma around! I’ve been coming to Sam’s for over 10 years, and it never disappoints. The flavors are authentic, the portions are generous, and the quality is always consistent. It’s a family-owned gem with friendly service and a warm, welcoming vibe. A true Davis local favorite! 🥙🔥
We stopped at Sam's for a late lunch on our way from Truckee to San Francisco. The portion sizes were huge, and the food was fresh and amazing! It was clear that love and care went into its preparation. Literally the best falafel and baklava I have ever had, and I have lived in the Middle East. My husband had shawarma, and he said it was equally awesome. The service was friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend!!
The best shawarma I've had. Good vibes, staff, and delicious food. Would recommend and will be coming back!
Sam's is one of our all time favorites. Both of my kids chose Sam's to have lunch with family following their High School Graduation. They were each give comp desserts and warmly congratulated. The food is so delicious and such generous portions. Highly recommend.
Arrived for late lunch the kitchen was a frenetic scene of chaos and drama as a double order party of 16 were about to desend on the over taxed Sam and his staff. All good..

It’s a decent spot, and the food tastes authentic. My friend and I had the chicken & rice combo. The chicken is cooked on a gyro machine, so the flavor and texture are a bit different from the typical “food cart” style chicken & rice — but it was still tasty. The accompanying salad felt a bit rushed, with the veggies chopped into big, uneven pieces - wish they were cut into small pieces. That said, the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and a touch of cultural charm that adds to the experience. The restaurant is in a really good part of the town.
The brightly lit interior coupled with the sizzling from the kitchen were some of the first things that caught my attention as I entered Sam’s. I couldn’t help but feel relaxed with the simple black chairs and brown tables that hide intricate Persian-style rugs beneath them. The cooks quickly served my food, beef over rice topped with sumac onions, in a simple recyclable container. Plastic utensils and a can of Diet Dr. Pepper accompanied my delicious meal

Every time I come here, I get the same thing: spicy mixed schwarma in pita. It's messy to eat but worth it. If you're in the mood for dessert, the baklava is delightful. Their service is also incredibly fast (~5-7 min for an order) considering it's a family owned restaurant!
Great restaurant! Will most likely come back. 4 stars because my chicken shawarma was a bit dry, but after reading reviews I should've ordered it over rice with both sauces, I believe that would've fixed it. Nevertheless, it still tasted great. Will come back again.
Great atmosphere and a good place for people watching. Kebabs, shawarmas and various appetizers, but not many drink choices. Servings are large. I enjoyed the food, as well. Unlike other places, they turn on their AC and heat, so it makes for a good respite from the weather.
Love the food!! It gets 4 stars instead of 5 because it's a little hard to navigate the first time...it is a family owned place so that is understandable. I ordered fries for my son one time but I didn't realize that they had spicy seasoning on them, but Sam saw from the kitchen that I was giving them to my son & quickly made some without the spice before I even realized. The fries were not great but everything else is absolutely wonderful...all the schwarmas on rice or pita( my favorite), kabobs, & dolmas- all so yummy!!!
Yummy shwarma and falafels, fast and kind service, lots of outdoor seating. Also good value (at least for Davis prices). It can get busy around lunch due to a flood of students, but if anything that shows Sams is a quality institution. They do not take phone orders, which is a definite negative for me, especially during the 4 hottest months of the year.
First time there pretty good. Had the chicken pita.
Decent meal, good service, reasonable prices. Ordered chicken schwarma. Chicken pieces cut thin and small. Liked yogurt sauce. Liked vegetables but wish there was just a little more of it. Liked bread in general but didn't like that it was over toasted on one side. A little on the salty side.
We spied Sam's while visiting UC-Davis, and had lunch. The large volume of the servings was as expected for a restaurant targeting college students, and was a very good value. The quality of the food and service was better than we expected; we had a Chicken Shawarma on Salad, and Hummus on Pita. Indoor and outdoor seating available. (Cool decor in the single restroom.)
Best value around the University of Davis. Was starting to develop hanger and line for nearby burger place did not seem to be moving so gave Sam's a try. No regrets. Cash only but being Chinese, I know some of the best places are cash only. I got beef and hubby got chicken. We split fries. The pita was packed with meaty deliciousness. Additional plus because hubby is very particular and Sam's honored his requests to perfection. He actually ate his whole pita which I rarely see. I only ate 3/4 and had the other 1/4 for breakfast (still yummy). Worried that if we lived in Davis, we would eat or order take out from Sam's at least weekly. We love road trips where we find local gems like Sam's Mediterranean.
After possibly going through all the options of food in Davis, we decided on Sam’s. It was exactly the right decision. They always seem to be out of something, in this case, rice and salad, so we ordered chicken shawarma pita wraps. They did not disappoint at all though! Extremely tender and delicious and juicy and SO flavorful. We ate them outside on the patio while enjoying the chilly little breeze and were in heaven. Love!
We purchased the bowl, beef and chicken. The portion is huge, and the bread tastes really good. Yet, the food is so greasy. The quality of the beef shawarma was so low, the chicken was not bad though. Service? Very low. And the restaurant indoor or outdoor was not really clean. I do not recommend this restaurant all in all, considering the price and quality.
Nice house turn into a restaurant. I'm sure they're family own. We went in there to have a feast, unfortunately they don't carry steak just chicken. Everything we saw on others people's take look great. I'm more than sure it tastes good too.

This restaurant has gone down hill steadily after moving to their current location. A decade ago, the food was fresh and homemade but that is not the case anymore.. The “shawarma” served is not shawarma and seems to be some sort of frozen processed product that is warmed up then chopped up to try to mask this. I would bet that there is no shawarma spit in the kitchen at all. The fries are pretty clearly frozen store bought and do not taste fresh at all. Pretty bad sign if you can’t cut up potatoes and drop them in the fryer. Food has continuously become more expensive over time while quality has declined. The food is mostly store bought and then assembled in the kitchen. It is certainly edible but hard to justify the cost for most people in yolo county for what it is. The food at east Med chain fast food restaurants like The kebab shop is much better. Sad to see.
I am so sincerely confused by all these glowing reviews of Sam’s food. The “shawarma” is gyro-style mystery meat on pita, the falafel is bland, hummus is decent. The only thing to this place’s credit is the staff is very nice. I am from Lexington, Kentucky and the worst our five or so Levantine Arab/Turkish/Greek restaurants totally blows this place out of the water. With being so close to the supposed food mecca of the Bay and mega-diverse Sacramento, I am very surprised by how low Davis’s standards for restaurants are.
I had the same experience here as with Sophia's Thai restaurant last week. My takeout was incorrect. Just like Sophia's - the restaurant (which used to be in a house, in a residential neighborhood across from the city park) is very nice with an outside porch. The service was excellent when placing my order. However, I ordered a Chicken Shawarma over Rice. What I received was not the order. I called the restaurant, but it went to Voicemail. So I just ate whatever I had. However, would I eat here again? Yes - at the restaurant. The service was immaculate, and the restaurant and front porch was very nice. A great place to hang out, like a 'Third Room'. The online order received, not really (but that is the challenge of online ordering, and I acknowledge this)
Service was great and they were very friendly. We ordered the falafel pita which was good, but we also ordered a chicken shawarma. The shawarma was filled with three different types of various slabs of mystery meat with colors ranging from yellow to dark brown and looked incredibly processed and nothing like the photos. It all tasted the same and we felt mildly ill after. Note: The AI labeled the photo as having pita chips. Mind you, these supposed “pita chips” are actually the chicken.
I ordered chicken kabob over salad. Kabob was dry and uneatable. I just picked it out and than wanted a side portion of shawarma to addd protein to my salad. They made me buy the whole on pita dish. Shawarma was good really tasty. I had to order two dishes to eat one dish. Just disappointed with service and food.

I had higher hopes for this family run place in Davis, near SE campus. The food quality was poor and the prices were surprisingly high.
I ordered a chicken kabob salad. What I got was greasy fried chopped up processed chicken sandwich meat on top of a salad . I told them that was not what I ordered and they said they ran out of chicken kabobs, I said I didn’t want it and would like my money back, they said I had eaten the chicken so I couldn’t get my money back. I actually just tasted the chicken and took it back. My husband ordered the shawarma beef platter and what he got was a shawarma pita sandwich, they said they must of read the order wrong.... didn’t offer to remake the correct order. My husband was hungry so he just ate, he said it was just ok. Awful experience, I will never go back!!!
Didn’t feel it was clean. Tables dirty, counter dirty Staff was congenial, but food seemed slapped together with little care. Ordered the chicken shawarma plate. The chicken was in flakes- wasn’t sure it was chicken!
The Chicken Shawarma Plate was terrible - they serve chicken bologna. No hummus included. The salad was marginal at best. To top it off, they charged a credit card fee on a meal over $50 bucks. If you want Mediterranean food in Davis, try somewhere else.
We are visiting from another state, Absolutely disrespectful staff. They treated us inhumane and its not acceptable from a Mediterranean restaurant. If your main focus is to only cater student costumers, please close for the season.
Bad dry falafel on pita. The condiments didn’t help. The pita was good tho
