Sushi Gato is highly praised for its fresh, high-quality sushi and creative rolls like the Gato roll and lemon roll. Chef Kenny is a highlight, and the staff is consistently described as welcoming and friendly. Some find the beef teriyaki overpriced.

I absolutley love this place! As soon as you walk in all the staff greets you in japanese and their service is kindly attentive. The food is amazing! I've tried the tempura udon, teriyaki bento box, miso soup, and sweet potato/veggie filled sushi. It always hits with my family! I also really love their breaded and fried vegetables they serve on the side that come with some meals. I recently noticed they have desserts too, so I can't wait to come back to try these and more!
This establishment is very beautiful! The staff is so refreshingly polite, pleasant and nice at the same time. The bento box was absolutely delicious. The octopus and squid sushi was so fresh. The squid is now my all time favorite sushi ever. I’m Not sure how the chef prepared it but it’s amazing! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who’s interested in a Japanese meal or Sushi. It was a very nice Valentines dinner. We did not have reservations and we only had to wait for one party to leave before we were seated.
Not your typical "suburb" sushi! Even though Sushi Gato had only opened its door a bit over a year, the chef & team here had operated Japanese/Sushi restaurant for more than 25 years. I came here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by Chef Kenny's omakase. Its not cheap here, but good fish/seafood, directly flown in from Japan, arent cheap neither. I was served Akimo (Monkfish liver), Uni, Hotate (Scallops), Shikoku Oyster, Aji, Shima Aji, Nodoguro (Sea Perch), Chu-Toro and other specials that were mostly from Japan; in Nigiri form that is crafted and seasoned(sauced) to perfection by Chef Kenny. They do have rolls and other items if you werent going to reach for the top or you are just bringing sushi newbies or kids for a causal meal.
We had a big group for Happy Hour and service was great. We had two waiters taking care of our group of 12. Food was pretty good too. The sushi was fresh and the presentations were very pretty. We took advantage of their happy hour to try the seaweed salad, social tuna roll, katsu roll, takoyaki, shrimp tempura rolls, and vegetable yakisoba too (large portion).
A little more expensive than other sushi restaurants, but the quality and variety is really good. I've been going on Friday nights to sit at the bar with Hirosan. I especially appreciate their variety of cold sake -- if you've never had filtered cold sake, I suggest you try some here. The pic is of a lemon roll.
I visited Sushi Gato for the first time, and they mentioned that they’ve recently opened. I must say, they’re off to an excellent start! The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, with soft, calming music—perfect for someone like me who doesn’t enjoy eating with loud background noise. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The chef, who is Japanese, even gave me a few recommendations when I was ordering, which you don’t often see at other sushi bars. The food? Absolutely delicious! Every dish I tried had the freshest fish, and you could really taste the quality in every bite. This place easily deserves five stars, and I’ll definitely be recommending it to friends and family.
I just found an amazing sushi restaurant! They use only the freshest and most delicious fish, and you can really taste the skill of the chefs in every bite. There were many rare Japanese fish that you don’t often see in this area, and the aging process of the fish was done perfectly. The service was also exceptional, with friendly and attentive staff that made the dining experience even better. The best part is that you can enjoy such high-quality sushi at a very reasonable price! I definitely want to come back here often. I’m so happy that we have such a fantastic sushi spot in our neighborhood!
Sushi Gato is the real deal. Outstanding food coupled with traditional Japanese hospitality. They have a terrific happy hour menu and deliver an exceptional value for the price point. Best sushi I’ve had in San Diego hands down.
I highly recommend this restaurant. I have visited this restaurant several times recently. Our family loves this restaurant so much! Sushi Gato offers a comfortable dining experience, and no matter what dish you choose, it is always satisfying. Additionally, there are plenty of menu options for those who can't eat raw fish. Not only do they offer traditional sashimi and sushi, but their special rolls are also outstanding. The balance and harmony of the seasoning and ingredients are perfect. My favorite is Crazy dragon roll, Shrimp tempura crunch roll. The servers are well-informed about all the dishes and provided excellent guidance. They were professional and friendly. They made our dining experience even more enjoyable.
I was so impressed that I had to share my experience. I am thrilled to have found a professional, comfortable sushi restaurant in San Diego that serves everything from sashimi, sushi, and rolls to tempura. Since we had several people in our group, we were able to try a variety of dishes. Every single one was satisfying. This place genuinely cares about each dish they serve. Every ingredient feels incredibly fresh and carefully selected, using the best quality. The restaurant itself, including the tables and chairs, is very clean and cozy. The sashimi salad and cucumber salad were very fresh and the grilled fish was cooked to perfection. Even the two-piece California roll in the bento box wasn’t just a side but well-made roll. The tempura was wonderfully crispy and fresh as well. With this level of quality, you would easily pay more price in other places. I will be back soon.
Nice selection everything was fresh and great tasting. The teas were good with a passion ice tea and iced green tea. We got lunch bentos with teriyaki chicken and salmon. All the staff were very welcoming and nice. Place is clean with a modern feel.
My husband and I absolutely love Sushi Gato and have been visiting as often as we can recently. What we love most is how welcoming and friendly the staff is--they always make us feel like family. The attentiveness and genuine care they show make every visit special. It's a wonderful feeling to be remembered and treated with such warmth every time we walk through the door. On top of that, the food is fantastic! Our favorites are the Crazy Dragon Roll, Alaska Roll, and Rainbow Roll, and the bento boxes are some of the best we've had. If you have a sweet tooth, they also offer a great variety of desserts. The restaurant is clean, modern, and a perfect spot for a cozy, delicious dinner.
This sushi spot is an absolute treasure! The sushi is incredibly fresh, and each piece is crafted with such care. The appetizers are just as amazing, perfectly seasoned and the ideal way to start your meal. I was surprised to see they had Suntory Beer here too! This beer pairs really well with fish and has a good smooth taste, they do a good job on giving the right amount of foam. The Dessert was amazing! The Monaka Ice Cream has a good crispy wafer crunch. The Green Tea and Red Bean Flavors were creamy and decadent with a good milk taste. The ambiance is modern and inviting, the staff are warm and attentive, making sure everything is right. Whether you're here for a special night out or just craving amazing sushi, this place is a winner. I'll definitely be back!

The Sushi Cat strikes again..... Sooooo delicious and delectable. Tried their tako yaki this time with my usual and they just DO NOT Dissapoint. Come..... Eat!
We’ve tried tons of items on the menu including premium sushi items, rolls (we love the gato roll and fresh salmon rolls), the salmon bento, green teas, the lychee drink and matcha cheesecake. Everything we’ve had has been fresh, of the highest quality, carefully prepared and deliciously balanced. This our new favorite sushi spot. The staff is extra kind and always makes wonderful recommendations. I can’t recommend them enough.

Update: 4 months in and STILL the best sushi and service in SoCal! The sushi here is authentic, expertly crafted, creatively presented, and absolutely the best my extremely discerning brother has had in San Diego. I have one of those gourmand older brothers who is a university professor with a very refined palate. Every fish is hand chosen by the owner! (I have taken my dear brother 12 places in SD with four star reviews since I moved here 2 years ago and he has 3 starred or less every one of them.) The service is just as the food- perfection! Sorry that half the tempura was half eaten before we remembered to photograph. Favorite dish? The Gato Special: a roll that includes spicy tuna with Wagyu beef.

SOOOOOOOOO GOOD! I'm half Japanese and I'm picky about Japanese food, and they were better than what my grandmother would make. The food was incredible. So fresh. The tempura batter was perfect. Light, fluffy, and flavorful. I loved the soft shell crab and the Gato special roll with the waygu beef. Their prices were very reasonable, our table of four cost about $140 with tip and we ordered so much food. We also had am asparagus roll, 2 kinds of vegetable tempura, two orders of the yakisoba (which was the best I've ever had), soft shell crab, salmon tempura, calimari, and homeade gyoza. Everything was perfect!! We will be back soon!
This is my second time within a week visting my new go to sushi place! I'm extremely picky with my sushi and Sushi Gato is FREAKING DELISH!!!! Sushi Gato uses high quality ingredients from the fish down to their ponzu sauce. Extremely well priced, impeccable and friendly service. A rare combo nowadays. Not to mention how beautifully the place has been renovated! HIGHLY RECOMMEND visting!
CHEF KENNNY!! We discovered this sushi heaven by accident, diverted by those raising their voices!! Lucky to be seated and spoiled by Chef Kenny! Go with the Chef Special and let him spoil you!! Great setting! Amazing owners and staff!! #RepeatBellyPlesser
Some of the freshest and tastiest Sushi I've had in San Diego. We had the tuna carpaccio to start and the sauce is to die for. For rolls we had the lemon roll and dragon roll and the portioning was perfect where each mouthful was not too much while the sauces were on point. Then we ordered some nigiri, toro, golden eye snapper, salmon belly, albacore, and scallop and they were all fresh and delicious. Service was good and attentive. They even gave out some cute little towels with their logo on it as a grand opening gift. Definitively coming back with more friends!
This was my first time at here and dinner was fantastic! I got two different sushi rolls and each one was delicious. The atmosphere was great too! The employees were so friendly and kind. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great experience. I highly recommend Sushi Gato!
When I arrive to the restaurant, it states, please wait to be seated. When I got there, there were groups of people, no one ever agreed at me when I got inside. But also, no one explained how the seating process worked. After about 10 minutes, I was told that there was a sign in sheet to be seated. Which no one ever mentioned that worked at the restaurant. The waited was about 45 minutes, but overall the food was good. Customer service was quick and fast. And the place was nice.

I feel frustrated paying $25 for beef teriyaki when this portion clearly is not worth the price. I used to enjoy buying take out sushi from Sushi Gato, but my experience is the quality has decreased. The California roll has “crabmeat”, beware this is not real crab. We learned this last time we ordered and thought we would try again. This will be the last time. Nice staff and I’m aware costs are increasing but I will take my business elsewhere moving forward for more quality ingredients and fair portions. Posting this for a true, honest, authentic reaction from a family man just trying to get reasonable portions for the price paid, and real ingredients for the food ordered.
We came on Friday night and there was a wait. We ordered the Nigiri paradise, the cucumber salad, and the pork cutlet bento box for the kids. A bonus salmon tempura was given to us later in the meal. When the Nigiri Paradise was served we were told not to use any soy sauce. The cuts of fish were decent size and some pieces were seasoned with salt and citrus zest. What stood out to me was the lack of flavor of the sushi rice. If you tell people not to use soy sauce, then the nigiri better be on point. The service was great and attentive but we were shocked with the bill when gratuity was automatically added (about 20%). I don't remember reading this on the menu but this needs to be mentioned.
