Several years ago I read a book called Three Cups of Tea. It focused on building relationships through hospitality. My dinner tonight gave me a glimpse of the welcoming and open Afghan culture. I felt we were more than diners. The owners daughter made us feel so welcome, introduced us to her toddler, and shared the best of her mother’s cooking. Before leaving, our palates were satiated, but even more so we genuinely felt enveloped in hospitality. That’s why this place still succeeds after 14 years. The atmosphere is colorful and soothing. There is even an area to dine on cushions as a group. We ordered such a variety of food, a lot had to be taken to go. My main dish was chicken sabzee. It’s amazing how different this is from Persian sabzi, so tremendously fresh and flavored with different spices. Husband had the ground meat and chicken kebab with special rice. His beef patty was crunchy like the best smash burger, yet so much more flavorful. The raisin- carrot combo rice is so yummy. Both our kebabs were juicy and unctuous with the chutney. We also had the mandoo dumplings appetizer, which are not to be missed. The yogurt, spice topping provided umami. They were light, yet filled with flavorful meat and onions. The outer dough was not thick and pasty like other places. Not surprisingly, the large boloni proved to be a meal by itself, oozing with potatoes and delicate spices, and it came home with us. If you prefer baklava that is crunchy, flavored with light honey and a great balance of nuts, order theirs. Overall, great choice for a cultural intro to a new cuisine for us. I read that Khyber Pass is part of the Silk Road and separates Afghanistan and Pakistan. It suppose it is this important crossroads that results in an eclectic mix of menu items: curries, dumplings, stewed vegetables, kebabs, rice and fried breads. These were items one would find in neighboring countries around the Pass, yet distinctly different and uniquely Afghani. It was a win for us…So many types of foods leading to a fabulous meal with exciting new flavors. I would return time and again to try all the menu items!
This is the single best and most authentic Afghan place I have been to. The atmosphere is very authentic especially the sitting area is really beautiful. The owner was super friendly. But the best part was the food. We got the Qaboli Pallow and the Lamb Fillet Kebab and both were super delicious and very authentic. The Qubuli literally melts in your mouth. The doogh drink was also very nostalgic.
This was my first time trying Khyber Pass Kabob, and I had a great experience. It seems like a family-owned restaurant, and the mom and son hosting were very beautiful, gracious, kind, and welcoming. The food came out quickly, the portions were generous, and everything was absolutely delicious. I also really loved the inside — the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I’ll definitely be coming back!
I had an amazing experience at Khyber Pass Restaurant in Pleasanton! The food was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The flavors were authentic, rich, and full of taste — you can really tell they put care into every dish. The kabobs were tender, the rice was fresh and flavorful, and the Afghan tea was the perfect touch. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was friendly and professional. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for authentic Afghan food in the Bay Area. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Our very first experience with Afghan cuisine, and it exceeded all expectations! We chose to get takeout, and every dish was exceptional. The beef dumplings, chicken kabobs, and lamb curry were unbelievably flavorful, and even the lentils were perfectly seasoned. Beyond the food, the family who owns the restaurant was incredibly friendly and kind. We will definitely be back to explore more of the menu. Thank you for a wonderful meal!
Women in Afghanistan have always been symbols of strength and resilience. This restaurant, with its warm atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent management, will always remain memorable to me. I highly recommend anyone reading this to give it a try — you won’t regret it!
I’m so glad I decided to try this place! Some of the best Afghani food I’ve had in a long time. I ordered the Mantu and Chapli Kebab, and the portions were huge—absolutely delicious. Everything felt incredibly fresh, from the naan to the salad. The service was outstanding, and our host, Sultana, was warm, friendly, and welcoming. She was patient with explaining the menu to us and recommending what was good. We truly enjoyed our experience here and can’t wait to come back!
Decided to take my girlfriend here after not having been for about 4-5 years. Food was so good! We got the Mantoo, as I remembered that was my go-to, and it was so flavorful, as good as I remembered. Food could've been just a little bit warmer, but that's easy to overlook for me, as long as the flavor's there, which it definitely was. Our server was so nice and hospitable too! (Maybe the owner) She gave us some bread on the house:)
experience. The food was absolutely delicious — rich in flavor, perfectly spiced, and beautifully presented. Every dish, from the tender kebabs to the fragrant rice and freshly baked naan, was a delight. The service was equally impressive: warm, attentive, and genuinely hospitable, making us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. It’s rare to find a place that delivers both amazing food and great service so consistently. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Afghan cuisine in a cozy, inviting atmosphere.
I honestly love this Afghan restaurant. The food is always so flavorful , you can really taste the spices in every bite. The meat is cooked to perfection every single time. I always order the chapli kabob with rice — it never disappoints. The lady who works there is super sweet and kind. The vibe inside the restaurant is cozy and welcoming. It’s one of those places you just keep coming back to.
We were a group of. Four who had never had Afghani cuisine before! The owner was kind, helpful, and very knowledgeable with getting us the food to give us a fantastic first impression! Thoroughly enjoyed the family environment and would recommend to anyone new or experienced with Afghani cuisine!
The several times I have gone the food is flavorful, fresh and service is always pleasant and waitress is always making sure you are taken care of. Love the interior decor with the colorful materials and authentic Afghan seating in part of the restaurant, really gives you that family vibe. Chicken and lamb with Kabuli Palau are a must. Start your meal off with bolani too!
I recently visited Khyber Pass Kabob in Dublin, and it was a memorable experience. The restaurant's ambience immediately struck me as both authentic and warm, making for a welcoming atmosphere. The service was exceptionally friendly, adding to the overall pleasant dining environment. As for the food, it was an authentic Afghan delight. I tried the Chicken Kabob, which was succulent and flavorful, perfectly complemented by the aromatic Basmati Rice. The Lamb Shank and Ground Beef Kabobs were also recommended by fellow diners, and they did not disappoint. The portions were generous, ensuring a satisfying meal. What stood out to me was not only the quality of the dishes but also the variety. Vegetarian options like the Badenjan in the vegetarian platter were equally impressive, offering a well-made and substantial meal for those preferring plant-based dishes. Khyber Pass Kabob truly deserves its high ranking among Dublin's restaurants. Whether you are new to Afghan cuisine or a seasoned aficionado, this restaurant is a must-try. The combination of delicious food, warm ambience, and friendly service makes for an unforgettable dining experience. I highly recommend it and will definitely be returning soon!
Went to this restaurant today based on the reviews and was amazed beyond the high expectations I had already set. From the moment we got in to the moment we left, the owner of the restaurant directly took care of us and ensured we had a personalized experience. The restaurant not only has an authentic vibe, but it also has some of the best food I have ever had for these types of dishes. The lamb fell of the bone and the chicken in the combination kabob was some of the most flavorful and juicy I have had, especially with the touch of lemon. The fresh homemade bread tied everything together with its flaky warm texture and delicious flavor. At the end of our meal we had the baklava which was to DIE for with it's near perfect balance of flakiness and satisfying chewable texture with the sweet filling. Before heading out we had the afghan green tea as a palette cleanser and were taken aback by the soothing aroma of the hot fresh brew. It was a great way to finish a great meal and experience. I highly encourage people check out this restaurant and bring their families as well as the food is just killer. I can't wait to go back again for the food as well as the hospitality of the genuinely passionate owner!
Visited Khyber Pass Afghan Restaurant in Dublin recently. The food was decent overall flavors were good and the chicken kabob was nicely cooked. However, there’s room for improvement when it comes to the rice, sides and salad that come with the plate. The salad felt a bit basic and the sides could use a bit more variety or seasoning to match the main dish. Service was friendly and the ambiance is ok. With a few tweaks, this spot could be much better.
I wish i could give 0 stars if possible, not worth the money n time. We came from union city with 5 kids to visit kr farms for halloween/ pumpkin patch then decided to go to khyberpass for dinner. Worst customer service ever, the lady was rude and not welcoming at all. The food is oily ,never seen afghan food so drenched in oil. we ordered potato bolani, combination kabob, qabuli pulao, chapli kabob. They all have same oily brown rice and same rice in qabuli pulao, no difference, beef tikka kabob has smell n not welldone ,bolani was really oily and spicy even though asked for mild , portions are so less than any other afghan restaurants in bay area. Forgot to take pics as kids were hungry. The worst thing is lady attitude as we came to eat free, continiously saying to kids to behave and be nice eventhough all kids are sitting n trying to eat that oily food. Picking plates from table while we were still eating and keeps saying to kids dont stand( standing close to table as they were done), even though restaurant was empty, now i get it why this restaurant was empty even on a saturday night. They charged 20% gratitude, thats too much for this kind of ridiculous service n food. Never coming back.
