If you visit you will understand why this was Robert Burns' favourite howff! It is an atmospheric building full of a sense of Burns' time and there are even lines etched by him on a window pane. Anyone who is interested in poetry or the history of Scotland or good food will enjoy a visit: the cuisine, which makes heavy use of locally sourced ingredients, is outstanding.
Went for a last minute meal to The Globe booked on the day on the booking system, easy enough. Been living in D&G for 18 yrs now and been meaning to go. I promise not to make it as long until the next time. When you walk in you get a sense of the age of the place, with its wonky floors, old oak features and Rabbie Burns images. We were greeted on arrival. The atmosphere was pleasant and there were more intimate rooms for couples sharing a romantic evening. We were surprised by the amues bouche that was delicious and we chose a main each, a glass of wine and a dessert. A tiny point is the Riesling should have been colder, and the cost was at the top end of a meal out, but very very much worth it. I’m not sure I’m a fan of the carpet in the restaurant, but I guess that’s personal. The massive fun and creative painting on the rear wall gives you a sense of the bustling bygone times. The service was also black gloved and excellent. Would thoroughly recommend I want to go back for the 7course tasting menu sometime soon
My cousins and I were in Dumfries for a wedding, and while planning the trip, came across The Globe Inn. We decided to go more out of curiosity for the history than for the food, thinking it was a once-in-a-lifetime visit. Arriving there and seeing the menu, we went all in with the 7-course meal. And wow!!! it knocked our socks off! We’ve all traveled quite a bit, and we were beyond impressed. The food was phenomenal, the service impeccable, and the historical charm of the place added such a unique layer to the experience. Every course was memorable, the staff were warm and attentive, and the atmosphere was just magical. If I lived nearby, I’d be there every single week. It’s been two weeks since I returned home, and I still think about The Globe Inn—the people, the place, the flavors. What an unforgettable experience!
One of a kind culinary experience in Robert Burn's favourite howff originally opened in 1610. We ordered two dishes and a few drinks and were surprised with a complementary amuse-bouche and a sweet at the end. The flavour and presentation of each dish were phenomenal. Their ingredients are sourced from local produce, which makes the meal more special. Furthermore, the staff were attentive, and the pacing of the meal was perfect. We were also shown a glimpse of Robert Burn's bedroom as a nice end to the evening. Already planning our next visit :)
We attended the Traditional Burns night celebration event last night. Staff were very friendly and attentive, I found out I was pregnant after booking and they were so helpful adjusting the set menu to suit the dietary requirements. Lovely setting in historical building. Callum Watson was wonderful providing the entertainment, with toasts, pipes and poems.
I had a fantastic dining experience at The Globe Inn on a rainy Wednesday night. Everything was delicious and the restaurant is a cool setting. I had the 7 course tasting menu. The highlight dishes for me were the Crab, Hake and Galloway Beef. Thanks for making it a memorable experience!
Outstanding food with fabulous presentation. Lovely staff who deliver top class service. Dined here numerous times and it's consistently superb with a regular change of menu which has so much effort and skill committed to it. The chef is a culinary wizard. Eaten at numerous top class restaurants and The Globe is definitely up there as one of the best. It's not a cheap place to dine but you really receive great quality in every aspect of your dining experience so we were very satisfied. See you again soon.
Hadn't been in The Globe for 3 decades, but had a fantastic meal here on Saturday. Opened in 1610, this old Inn was a favourite of Rabbie Burns in the late 1700s, with plenty of paintings and memorabilia. Great selection of beers and wines, an extensive list of malts, and excellent food and service. Will be back soon!
Reviews from all 3 of our visits (Finally getting around to posting); 21st Sep 2019 Myself and my partner visited The Globe Inn for dinner it was fantastic; the full experience from start to finish was great. Since Annandale distillery have become the new owners the refurbishments have made a huge difference to the atmosphere and the experience. The service was first class and we were attended to throughout the evening. Food was amazing the best food we have had in a long time, and exactly what Dumfries needs, a high-class restaurant in Dumfries designed around eating 3 courses. We had the pork cheek and haggis to start both full for flavour and great portion size. Main course we had the pork wellington each and the pastry was beautiful, dauphinois potato’s lovely and the sauce complemented the dish well. I also had the pecan tart which was a lovely end to the meal and the apple trifle was very sweet but exactly what my partner was looking for and thought it was delicious. Overall fantastic experience would highly recommend and can’t wait to try the lunch menu. 19th Oct 2019 After having a fantastic meal at the globe for dinner myself and my partner returned for lunch. We had the hand pressed burger and the red pesto and parmesan macaroni both lovely, really enjoyed it. We had read previous comments about the macaroni being not like traditional mac and cheese and people being disappointed but that’s because it’s not what it is. The menu clearly started it was red pesto and the macaroni is just the name of the pasta. Also saw people’s comments about the chips. We felt the chips were amazing lovely to see a restaurant providing handmade chips rather than frozen. Again, overall food was delicious, warm and well-presented and service was amazing. 15th Dec 2019 Myself and my partner had to come try the new Christmas menu having visited twice previously. Had the hand pressed burger and savoury scone with turkey filling. Again, was not disappointed food was outstanding, exactly what we were looking for at a great price. Lovely fresh food, warm, well presenting and beautiful hand cut chips. Can’t wait for try the new menu in the new year.
Just had the most scrumptious lunch at the Dumfries’ Globe Inn - it was Robbie Burns’ favourite pub and is predicted to become a Michelin starred establishment… I wouldn’t be surprised as ticked every box for a fantastic dining experience from food, service, atmosphere … everything was 5 star. A most enjoyable end to our Dumfries Burns ‘walkathon’. He lived and died here. Great value too. The 3 course lunch set menu is £29pp + drinks with lots of little extras like bread and amuse bouche thrown in for free. A must do dining experience if you’re in the area.
We had a lovely meal as a family for my sister’s birthday. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. It was an expensive meal but it was worth it and we would definitely go back!
What a fabulous little place. Didn't stay for food. We popped In because of the history it has with Rabby Buns it was his old watering hole. The staff were really helpful and showed us around, telling the history of the place and about the murals and stained glass windows. The real ale was in excellent condition tho only one beer was on at the time of our visit from the five Kingdoms Brewery in the Isle of Whithorn. Fantastic selection of malt whiskies from around the world and with over 250 to choose from. Again, staff were only too helpful in selecting us a wee dram or two. Thank you to keira all the staff who made us feel so welcome. 👏👏
Absolutely loved my time here! Did the tour, it was AWESOME! Mhairi is a superb tour guide, very knowledgeable and friendly ☺️ I'd also like to commend Keira, the lovely woman behind the bar, very knowledgeable about her whiskies, very friendly and all round extremely pleasant to be around! Will certainly be coming back, but next time I'm going to treat myself to some fine dining 😁😁
Highly recommended. Our experience was fantastic. We went for the tasting menu and every course was delicious. The presentation of the food was superb. The atmosphere was informal and relaxed and the staff were very pleasant and friendly. For the quality and amount of food as well as the overall experience we thought the Globe Inn was incredibly good value
Wow! We always enjoy an evening in The Globe but last night was exceptional. Every part of the meal was exquisite. Well done the new autumn menu is delicious. Every time the food gets better. Fabulous service too.
Lovely atmosphere 👌. Warm friendly staff. Attentive service. Relaxed atmosphere.
Lovely food and service, 4 of us had the tasting menu and loved it
Food was outstanding , staff all very polite and welcoming definitely visit again.
A friendly welcome from knowledgeable barmen, I'd recommend a visit - or three - for anyone interested in a dram of whisky. I know I'll be back again.
Simply brilliant. Everything from the food, the drinks, and the service to the welcoming environment, is just breathtaking. I can't wait to go back!
We had dinner on 9th May for my wife’s birthday. It was excellent. The food was exceptional ( unfortunately no room for dessert). Service excellent with explanations very precise. We will be back
The food & the service was outstanding! And they made my dog feel welcome with a fresh bowl of water!
Absolutely top notch food! Lovely to be able to take our dog in such a lovely environment. Book in advance to get a dog friendly table in the Snug. All the staff were attentive, knowledgeable about the food and helpful. The food was fine dining at it's absolute best. We live 7 hours away by car unfortunately, but will definitely be back next time we are nearby.
Perfect location for a special occasion. Nothing negative to say about the whole experience. The food and staff are a credit to the reputation of the establishment.
First experience at The Globe Inn last night and it will definitely not be the last, one-of-a kind! The setting is very cosy and comfortable with lots of quirks. We had a drink at the bar before being seated, the bar tender Matthew was great (so much knowledge with the whiskey available and very friendly). Our servers were also amazing Lewis & Michaela - they made our dining experience sincerely wonderful and again their knowledge of the food was impressive. Unfortunately we didn’t get to meet the chef but the food was out of this world! My partner had the normal menu and I had the vegetarian menu - for this area vegetarian options are very limited but I had a whole menu to myself (amazing!). Thankyou again to everyone who made our night so wonderful, Emma
My dining experience tonight at the Globe was exceptional. The food was utterly divine - of note, the Salmon Mi-Cuit and accompaniments. I would travel back just to eat this again! The front of house staff were equally fabulous, with friendly and attentive service. We dined in the Snug with our small dog. So impressive that a restaurant of this calibre allowed me to bring Bonnie! 🐾 10/5 🌟 Will I come back? Absolutely 100% ( I live about 200 miles away but worth every mile!) Exceptional. Thank you!
The food was great - especially the little bread rolls with butter at the start of the meal! We took granny there who has accessibility issues and they were very accommodating. The service was great too. Our waiter was nice, cordial and attentive. We had a bit of a wait for our first meal but honestly, the atmosphere, the food and the overall experience were just great. Definitely coming back next time we are in town
Changed a fair bit since I was last here, popped in for a drink to find it's become a rather lovely restaurant. Food and service of the highest quality. The staff were absolutely brilliant and very welcoming. I'll be returning when I'm back in the area.
Dog friendly in the snug, huge whisky menu to choose from, would definitely return.
Excellent restaurant for a special occasion -one of the best for many miles. High and innovative standards across the board with combinations of flavours which leave you surprised and wanting more. The historic venue alone is worth the visit and if Burns was able to return to one of his favourite haunts I am sure he too would be delighted.
The last time we visited The Globe Inn we took visitors there as it was the old pub were Robbie Burns used to drink. So when we were told we were going there for a fine dining taster experience, we didnt know what to expect. What a change, The snug area still remains but what was the main bar area is now a refurbished restaurant, with a fine dining menu , served by staff wearing gloves. To complement the taster menu there is also an optional whisky taster where each glass is picked , served, .its origin and how it will complement the food course is explained to you as it is served. Overall it was a good evening , the staff were attentive and polite, the food was very well presented and full of flavours. We did feel our table was a little to close, even without Covid, to those either side of us and the chairs even with cushions started to feel slightly uncomfortable nearer the end of the evening, but these things didn't detract to much from the overall enjoyment.
We ate Lunch at the Globe on the 28th of December 2023 in the snug due to our canine company. The food was amazing and we were treated to amuse bouche and other small additions throughout our meal. Exeptional. The Globe's management are dettermined that that they will earn a michelin star, as we were informed by the Maître d' on arrival. The quality of the food and service profess to that desire. Just 2 suggestions. As Maître d' it is not a good look to become involved in an public arguement with customers, no matter how wrong the customer is. Secondly. The Snug is part of the public space it is not a place where the medical needs of staff should be discussed with them. Take those discussions in to the back. Nevertheless, these are small matters. All in all we had a fantastic meal and look forward to returning, star or not.
Food excellent again, but sadly wine not great , and far to expensive £38 . Having looked on line this wine can be bought for around £8.There is no need for wine to cost this amount. The food is worth the price, The wine is definitely not
This was our second visit. The first several months ago was spectacularly good. It would have rated a solid 5* without a doubt. However, on this occasion we were disappointed albeit the cooking was of a very high standard the service was not. They did the bare minimum, missed specific requests, made an error on the bill and lacked any customer rapport. Wine was plonked (excuse the pun) on the table, we were not offered a taste, which is a terrible indictment for such a renowned restaurant. Even though it wasn’t too busy, the staff were distracted, complacent and inattentive. Just not good enough. We’ll not be back, regrettably.
The second pub on a CAMRA joint branches pub crawl of Dumfries. Hidden away but very interesting venue. Small snug does mainly restaurant trade at high end but serves real ales and a vast array of whiskies.
We’ve been to this restaurant many times and it had been my parent in law’s favourite restaurant in Dumfries. We always came here to celebrate some special day or other. However today we had a pretty disappointing experience. The food was delicious as it had always been; however, the service was disappointing. We asked for our bill and waited for 40 minutes before having to ask again. After finally getting the bill and another long wait we had to go to the counter to pay. The chocolate that would normally accompany the bill arrived as we were leaving the restaurant. Upon leaving we mentioned the long wait to the staff when they asked us if everything was okay, however they didn’t really respond or acknowledge our wait. The food was excellent, but an important aspect of fine dining is the service and experience, which is reflected in the high cost. Sadly this was lacking on this visit.
