Visited Edinburgh for a mini break and this eatery was highly recommended online. We came mid-week early evening and it was fairly quiet so no wait time for a table. You certainly can tell the Canadian theme with flags all over the place Staff took our order fairly quick and the food didn't take long to arrive. Food was fairly priced and very nice. If I ever visited again I would certainly come here again.
Really nice place, with a clear Canadian vibe :)) The poutine with haggis was tasty, the wings were good, lots of meat and great sauces. A perfect spot to spend an evening with family or friends!
Taste of Canada in the heart of Edinburgh. Great food, atmosphere and service! Sat and watched an ice hockey game, enjoying haggis poutine and beef dip sando. Chris was a great server and Id recommend checking out this Canadian style gem.
Wonderful experience! The place to go to if you're looking for poutine. Only thing was missing was some Canadian sodas and maybe a maple flavoured milkshake on the menu, keep up the great work guys 🔥
I had the stake, peppercorn sauce and chips the atmosphere was brilliant we had really fast and nice servers and the ice hockey game is must to watch. The Canadian atmosphere really helps it and I really enjoyed it.
As a Canadian, my first thought upon reading about haggis was "I wonder how it is on poutine?" This restaurant delivered the answer to that question, and the answer is, pretty good! The cheese curds weren't quite the same as back home, but it was close enough.
We only came in for a quick bite and wish we could’ve stayed longer. I tried the Maple Bacon Poutine while my partner went for the World Famous Beef Dip. We followed that up with a Banoffee shake for a sweet treat. Hearty food and great atmosphere, recommended!
CANADIAN APPROVED! after my two weeks in Scotland and having chips frequently, I was dying for a poutine. Found this treasure of a restaurant on my last day. Great food, outstanding poutine. The house poutine is your quintessential Canadian poutine, nothing fancy just the classic fries, cheese curds, and brown gavy *chefs kiss*. The novelty of having a Canadian themed restaurant to sit in was amazing. Friendly staff, quick service. A great place to eat! I had the house poutine with a buffalo rach Royale. My friend had the dirty fries.
Love this restaurant so much. I’ve been a bunch of times and the food is always delicious. This time not so much, I found the wings to be lacking sauce. The poutine was incredible. The maple syrup gravy combo was an incredible combination of sweet and salty 👌🏼. I will 100% come back as I know how incredible this place is.
Good smash burgers and good poutine. There are tons of spots available for seating in the back, too. Large TV in the back to watch sports, too.
Great staff, and good food. Book in advance: we didn’t and they were still able to squeeze us in the front section but it would’ve been nicer to sit in the heart of the restaurant. Really cool decoration and old Canadian tv shows playing on the TVs. Good gluten free options.
Awesome food, service was great and I would highly recommend a visit, they have 2 sites, one in Edinburgh city centre and one at South Queensferry ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Had a brilliant birthday poutine here... which made ageing almost worthwhile!
Been here a few times and every time I leave contemplating if the food or the service was better as both are fantastic! The French dip is truly amazing! My last visit I had a really friendly and polite waitress who ran through everything. Then the owner came over and introduced himself even though he was dealing with an EHO visit. Always a great experience and will certainly be back! They also have a site in South Queensferry.
As a Canadian, I love to visit Canadian pubs when abroad and this place is hands down the most authentic Canadian experience I’ve had abroad. Not only do they use real cheese curds for their poutines, but the curds in question are TOP QUALITY, seriously as good as I’ve had them in Quebec. The gravy is also absolutely delicious. Huge shoutout for the Acadian flag in the staircase as well. I got real excited when I saw it. You should be proud to represent Canada so awesomely on the scottish scene!!! Kudos also to the mostly (possibly all?) canadian staff. 10 outta 10, no notes!!!
Nice little place, well decorated and friendly staff. I was surprised as a French-Canadian travelling abroad so I had to try it. They have vegan options, I had the vegan poutine, while definitely not like what we have at home it's still good and comforting. The portions are small, but cheap!
New favourite restaurant! AMAZING POUTINE... I will dream of it! Great women's sports played in background, easy to talk, amazing.
Loved it that much we came back the next evening, Food, Service, Atmosphere and Look of the Place was Great. The Alcoholic Shakes are a Must Try. Highly Recommend. Will deffinatley be back next time we visit Edinburgh.
What an experience! Such a lovely atmosphere and a great decore with lovely staff and of course delicious food. The philly cheesesteaks are an absolute must, very cheesy as it should be. We ordered with their burger sauce which made an already tasty meal even better. I'd also highly recommend their coke float with lucas ice cream that tasted like a sugar delight. This place felt casual in the best way possible, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, I couldn't of asked for any better. I will be pushing for my friends and family to go there, and will be heading back there myself very soon.
Came here for lunch, had chicken wings and steak fries which were both delicious! The workers were kind and service was fast. The place is nicely decorated and they play good music!
We love Canadian food, especially poutine, so we were very excited when we heard about this place from Rate My Takeaway on YouTube. We even flew all the way up from London just to try it, and it definitely exceeded our expectations! Booking a table is essential, as the place was packed on our Saturday evening visit. The atmosphere is fantastic, the service is top-notch, and the food… AMAZING! The poutine is just like what you'd find in Montreal, the wings are divine, and the beef sandwich was incredibly tasty with the perfect amount of horseradish. The only downside is its distance from London, but we'll definitely be back! I can't recommend it enough!
This Canadian themed bar is a nice little find on Leith Walk not far from the Playhouse (opposite side of road). Nice and friendly atmosphere (well it is the Canadian way 😄) and staff with good food at reasonable prices. Highly recommend the Buffalo Fries if ordering a side and the burgers and cheese steaks are also worth mentioning! 👍
Great Canadian food spot ! I tried the world famous beef dip, the dip is amazing, really compliments the sanwich. The hoagie tastes soft and buttery. I personally would prefer the cheese to be melted. 7.5/10 My favourite is the Mac and cheese of the day, it had pico de gallo with bratwrust. It’s very cheesy and creamy, great portion size. I highly recommend the Mac and cheese there. 9/10 The milkshake is one of the best I’ve had, I had the biscoff one. They have a great drinks menu with lots of amazing drinks. 10/10 Overall, they have a great drinks and food menu with lots of varieties. Great for lunch with plenty seatings. They had rugby fixtures playing as well. Food is reasonably priced. However, wait time for food is a bit long today, the restaurant was super busy so I recommend booking ahead. Amazing welcoming service from Matt and Sam.
Greeted at the door by the lovely McKenna - so friendly and attentive despite the fact it was so busy on a Saturday night. She made time to have a chat with us and still kept up the great service. Kitchen was great too - speedy service but food was still fantastic. I had the beef dip and my husband had the Curdmeister burger, we also had a poutine to share. All of this and 2 drinks each - fantastic value for money.
Lovely place to eat with a family. Food was really good and the service was fast (I think they got it out fast because we had kids with us) and very friendly. Edina kindly gave us some tourist recommendations.
Visiting Edinburgh for the first time i was delighted to find Down the Hatch just around the corner from where I was staying. A little bit of home was a nice unexpected surprise. McKenna was a delight to talk too having just moved here from Canada herself. She suggested the Curdmeister and it didn't disappoint. Added a side of the Haggis Poutine cause you know when in Scotland. All in all a wonderful experience definitely recommend!!
Our server Megan was excellent - coming to check on us just the right amount. Food was very tasty - recommend the Haggis Poutine.
We moved to Scotland three years ago from Vancouver. We were looking for somewhere for dinner before a concert. We don't live in Edinburgh but came across this Canadian inspired restaurant and thought why not? Let me say we were totally stoked we did. We had a very warm welcome and the service was fantastic throughout. I had buffalo wings, fries and of course A&W root beer. All of which was outstanding. The only issue with this great place is that it made me homesick. We will be back and will definitely try the other location maybe for breaky.
Great Canadian bar and cafe in the heart of Edinburgh. Nice introduction to iconic Canadian food like poutine, Montreal cheesesteak and more. One of the best burgers we ever had, mine was with maple bacon jam. Veggie options too. If only they also had a Nainamo bar for dessert!
Came here for a meal a few days ago when Canada were playing in the Olympic hockey finals. Was extremely busy but service was really good. Food was really good, I had the burger and really enjoyed it. Would definitely go back
One of the best decorated restaurants ive ever seen in my life, the care and effort put into the restaurants looks and vibes is astonishing. And the food was incredible aswell, the price was fair and the food came out faster then you can blink. Will Definelty be coming back here again and i highly recommend this hidden gem.
Went for lunch and it was delicious. Great atmosphere inside with great music playing, large TV playing some ice hockey. Food came so fast and the place was really well staffed and organised. Prices were really reasonable and the food was so worth it!! Recommend for anyone in the area!
Amazing wee Canadian place. Burgers very tasty and poutine fries delicious. Just the portions are a wee bit small. The service was ok but not very friendly. Another thing is the chairs are not very comfortable.
As a Canadian I had to give this a try. Very cool decor and hockey games playing on the big screen. The maple bacon poutine is worth ordering to share, and the smash burgers are very nice. The prices of the burgers should include a side of fries though. The milkshakes are worth trying too.
On my initial trip to Down the Hatch, situated at the summit of Leith Walk, I ordered a smash burger along with fries. Both were delicious and of excellent quality. The seating is somewhat basic, accompanied by an array of interesting and quirky decorations that contribute to a chilly ambiance.
Standard pub food with a Canadian twist. The portion sizes were okay but on the smaller side. Sadly, one burger arrived cold. If you’ve always wanted to try poutine, this is the place to go. No breakfast options.
Designed super well with a lovely atmosphere and aesthetic. The customer service was quick, and they catered very kindly to my allergies. Whilst my food was a little underwhelming, please take my opinion with a grain of salt since they had to remove one or two ingredients from the dish for my dietary requirements.
Our first stop when we arrived in Edinburgh was Down the hatch. My husband and I had watched other people and their visit. It was a real " Canadian " atmosphere including a hockey game on the large screen. The food was good too. If you go and you're Canadian don't forget to sign the coasters and add them to the wall . The only thing I would add is that it would have been a " cooler " experience if when you sat down , you were asked something like "Hey, are you a Canadian or are you here just to experience a little Canadian culture?" "Where are you from ? Or don't forget to sign the coasters for our wall !" No one asked and there was no discussion at all about it. We just felt it would have made the visit a little bit more of an experience. All in all nice place and good food .
My second visit now. Always book in advance, it gets busy! Nice laid back Canadian themed sports bar / burger restaurant. Attentive service and the food is always fresh, piping hot and service is usually quick. The poutine is great as are the truffle parmesan fries!
I am a huge fan of the South Queensferry branch of Down The Hatch; the breakfast skillet is up there with one of my favourite dishes of all time and it always feels like a special place to go. Visiting the Edinburgh branch had been on my to do list for some time so when I got an email with a BOGOF offer on burgers, it was time to take the plunge. My friend and I arrived on Saturday evening, I had made a reservation and we were greeted my a friendly waitress at the entrance. The phone rang whilst she was looking up the booking and we said go ahead to answer, big mistake on our part as a large food order came in which took her attention away for a good 5 minutes. It was just odd that the other staff sitting around the bar area didn't seem to pick up on this as she was looking for their attention. Once we were shown to our seats, we picked our food/drinks and the waitress was helpuful in answering our questions about the food. The beer we got was fine, if a little crafty for our tastes. There were bottled beer options which we should have gone for. There was ice hocky showing on the big screen which was good fun to watch. A visit to the toilets were not the best, the stairs down to the lower level smelled bad and it felt like entering the scene of a horror movie. Lots of open doors, creepy lighting and a questionable aroma. Back upstairs, our food was served. In fairness, the burgers was good - quality ingredients used and a good size. My burger had a bit of a chilli kick to it but I perhaps didn't spot this on the menu. The chips I had with it looked anemic, they were supposed to be skin on seasoned fries but were more like school canteen rejects. The macaroni cheese was an absolute disgrace, it had very little sauce and no flavour (see photos for evidence). We did get a refund on the fries but didn't mention about the macaroni, you never want to be 'that guy'. We also missed out on the BOGOF offer as my friend went for a kids burger, that was our mistake.. oops.. On reflection, it really wasn't a great experience and I would be hesitant to return. There is so much scope for improvement which I do hope the business addresses. The bar area is also wasted, it just seems to be a hang out area for the staff but would make a lively fun area with music playing at a decent level, the lighting dimmed and more of a welcoming feel. It was however the food and the toilet area that did the real damage for me. I shall return to the SQ branch soon but it is a hard pass on the Edinburgh one for me now.
The food looks better on the social media pages than in person, everything was rather salty. I enjoyed the chimichurri special and the Mexican fries were pretty good but rather expensive as you have to pay for chips on their own and don’t come with any of the burgers, all the dirty fries are around the same price as the burgers on their own. We also got the haggis poutine which was too salty for preference too, we just felt the food was a bit overrated and lacked a bit. Perhaps we need to try something different some time and give it a second shot. Busy restaurant for sports fans if that’s more your vibe you’ll like it here !
As a Canadian, it was cool to visit this place. There's a ton of great Canadian feel both with the aesthetic, as well as watching a hockey game 😄🙏 Food choices are a bit pricey in my opinion. The fact that fries are an additional charge to the burger meals is a bit of a stretch. They also are just kind of regular fries with some additional seasoning in some cases. We'll say though that the Mac of the day was really filling. If you're Canadian looking for a fellow Canadian place, this is your spot. Spot. Just be prepared for some higher than usual prices for certain items. Staff were friendly but they did get our orders wrong a couple of times. But it did feel funny having one come up and immediately saying sorry. Felt like home.
Wednesday is wings day. We ordered special wings and Korean wings which I heard were the best item on the menu in here. Unfortunately, both wings were super salty and therefore it was difficult to eat them. The double cheeseburger was delicious and went along really well with the chips and sauce however the patty was a bit dry and cooked too well.
Had a perfectly ok meal here, tried poutine for the first time, so have no comparison to make but the fries were underdone and the gravy and fries lukewarm as it was brought out after having been forgotten for about 10 mins. The buffalo chicken wings had a strange sour sauce which I didn't like the taste of and which overpowered the whole dish, and made the wings soggy, again the wings were not hot, only lukewarm and the skin wasn't particularly crispy (after being doused in sauce), it felt like they'd maybe been lying around again for a wee while since being cooked. The gravy of the poutine was lovely, the curds were nice and the chips would have been fine if they'd been done a little longer but overall I'd only give the food 3, it just lacked oomph (and heat!) Same for the service, perfectly fine, efficient but lacked a little warmth. They also made a few mistakes like forgetting my poutine, giving my friend a beer he hadn't ordered and my other friend was given cheese with his burger which he had asked to be left out. The vibe is great, lots of Canadian memorabilia, ice hockey playing on a big tv and it was nice and busy. But to be honest I wouldn't rush back for the food. The bones of it was fine, it just wasn't cooked that well.
Visited on a recommendation. Food was tasty although portion sizes seemed small compared to the fairly high prices, especially the fries (which are extra) - for comparison I later saw that Gordon Ramsay Street Burger costs less. Staff very nice and helpful so didn't mind not asking for the optional service charge to be removed. Food arrived before drinks which was surprising but not a problem as drinks were not especially slow, arrived shortly after the food and we were given water on arrival. Table and chairs were fairly basic but comfortable, if slightly too close to other tables. Nice to have ice hockey in the background and effort went into the Canadian themed decor. Overall a good experience but the prices put me off a return visit, if fries were included with the main I may reconsider.
Excellent Service and friendly staff. Though the food leaves a lot to be desired, food came within 5-10 minutes of ordering which makes me question its freshness. Poutine was nothing special, cheese curds were a bit solid, nice gravy though it tastes exactly the same as Bisto. Chips are just the prepackaged frozen variety. Both Poutine dishes were barely warm as well. Also tried the Montreal Philly Cheesesteak, which seemed freshly cooked as it was roasting hot, though the roll was not fresh and was soaked through with grease, as a result the roll fell apart. Steak was bland needed seasoning however with the peppers and onions it tasted okay. Portion size was good. This eatery is really nicely decorated, brings a little bit of Canada to Edinburgh, however it was dead inside, just one other table on arriving and on leaving so there was no atmosphere. No music and the TV which was on, was set to mute as well. Not bad if you want peace and quiet! Very mediocre experience, don’t think we’ll rush back.
Food was nice. Very good buffalo wings. Didn't appreciate the server forcing us to pay the OPTIONAL service charge, which clearly says optional on the bill. We would have tipped anyway, but the way she handled it was rude. She seemed eager to get us out of there even though the website says they are open late and it was only roughly 10pm once we finished (arrived around 845).
Not worth the money. I ordered the Maple Bacon Poutine and the Oreo milkshake, and both were disappointing. The Maple Bacon Poutine didn’t live up to expectations. Despite being described as "seasoned skin-on fries," the fries were bland and unseasoned, and the advertised skins were missing. The maple syrup and gravy were barely noticeable, with a smoky flavour dominating the dish. The balance of ingredients was completely off. The Oreo milkshake, described as being ‘super thick like an old-fashioned shake should be’, was far from what was promised. What I received was runny, not cold, and overly sweet. The excessive sweetness left me feeling nauseous, and the texture and flavour, which should have been rich and thick, were completely missing. On a positive note, the presentation of both items was visually appealing, but that was the only highlight.
Food was ok, but definitely not worth the price they ask for it. I was shocked by the price of the small glass of kids juice: £2. It was so small my young child had to have another one. The gluten free bun was not the best, the spices on the beef patty made it taste like it wasn't really beef. Service was ok, no complaints. Atmosphere was nice. I wouldn't go back because of how expensive it is for the food the offer.
Server was amazing, thank you Megan. Food was disappointing, lacked any heart or soul. Gravy tasted exactly like Aunt Bessie’s, chips were clearly from the freezer and the smash burger was tiny. Food came out within minutes of ordering, not convinced it was fresh. Wouldn’t return but great waiting staff.
