This is the perfect way to start your Sunday. Samuel and bar crew are hilarious and oooh we had the rocket reach and boy did it send us to the moon!!! Loved it Andrew and John in the restaurant were phenomenal. The mezcal paper planes soared to new nights. Not your grandmas paper planes!! The mushroom calamari is to die for and the burgers (vegan and poppers burger) are incredible. We had a beautiful bottle of wine with the best views on fire island, we even spotted a pod of whales in the ocean 10/10

Phenomenal service and Amazing Food. If your in the Grove you HAVE to go to sand castle for dinner. Drinks are strong but not too strong and the food was absolutely perfect. I had the salmon and my buddy got the halibut; freshest fish I’ve ever had. Another friend got a burger and he said it was one of the best he’d ever had.

The Sand Castle is one of the great Fire Island bars/restaurants. The view is gorgeous - true oceanfront dining - and the staff are sweet and fun and attentive. The menu tends to rotate and is always amazing! Generally lots of gluten free and vegan options which is especially nice for an island/beach environment, which is otherwise a bit heavy with fried food, pizza, and beach snacks. It’s also a fun cash bar with a good amount of outside seating at the rail or to take drinks away for a hot beach day.

Beyond delicious vegan & gluten free Labor Day lunch. Exceedingly, the preeminent place to dine on Fire Island! Executive Chef Noelle Grant exquisitely prepares each delectable dish with enthusiasm, devotion & originality. Each season she surpasses our expectations with her culinary delights. The dining area is cozy, warm & inviting, and the dining staff always provides stellar service, especially waiter Benjamin. From the appetizers to the entrees to desserts, we are always beyond impressed!

Lives up to the hype! Got to go here for the first time for my birthday dinner after having heard so much over the years. And WOW was it everything I’d hoped. We arrived early for our reservation, but our table was already waiting for us despite a full house. Then to our surprise, the host asked if we’d mind waiting a moment so they could clear one of the best tables that just opened up. It’s this kind of attention to detail that is so often overlooked in a busy NY restaurant. And make no mistake. This IS a NY restaurant. Yes you’re at the beach, and the setting - hard up against the Atlantic Ocean - is exquisite. But this is no fried fish joint. You sacrifice nothing in terms of cuisine. We started with the delicious crab nachos (pictured), a small plate packed with flavor. The panko encrusted tuna is a star, and the short rib pappardelle melts in your mouth. The cocktails (pictured) are large and yet still nuanced Service was simply on point, even with a full house. Our ONLY quibble was that the beignet (dessert special) wasn’t topped with enough sugar. However the pastry itself was fried to perfection. A must go in Cherry Grove.

We ate here twice in August 2024, and both times impressed me. I say the date because it seems Fire Island places are always changing teams and managers, so they do have issues with consistency. Crab bisque, snapper, mollusks, bbq burnt ends, short ribs with gnocchi, Caesar salad—all very fresh and well prepared in our visits. Caesar was marked endive Caesar, but no endive appeared. Salad was still good, maybe just change the menu? Mollusks are usually a good choice in NY and here is no exception: fresh and lovely wine sauce. I think toasting the bread with a gas grill adds a gassy char that’s not quite right. But that’s nitpicking. Yes, it’s every bit as expensive as Manhattan, so not a budget choice at all. But nothing on Fire Island really is.

This is actually one of the best meals I’ve had in a few years. A chef friend of mine once said that there is an inverse relationship between the quality of the view and the quality of the food. I have found that to be usually true, but not here. Sitting outdoors with a magnificent view of the ocean, we enjoyed a truly spectacular meal. The food is absolutely amazing. The lemon pasta was the best pasta I’ve had in about 5 years! The short ribs were wonderful. The lava cake was probably the best I’ve ever had. Our server Teddy was fantastic. It is so rare to have food of this quality, and almost impossible to find with a view like this one. Congratulations to the chef Noelle Grant. Simply, wow!!!

I love it here. I always want to go here. Everything about this place is perfect. I love the waiters and how friendly they are. They are sweet, kind and just the right amount of chatty. The bartenders keep you totally entertained if you sit at the bar. More importantly, the food is very good! I love the food here and they are gluten free friendly. THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE ROLLS FOR THE LOBSTER ROLL. Don’t ask how many I had this summer or how much they cost. Between us and friends we’ve eaten the whole menu and nothing has ever been short of delicious. Never had a disappointment. Lastly, the espresso martini is top notch no matter which bartender makes it.

I just love this place!! Oceanside dining, creative and well prepared food served by an attentive and fun staff. I was surprised to find this place on the island and we had several awesome dinners there. I liked the whole vibe of the place - among other things, long time locals congregate at the bar each evening to swap stories and just have a little fun with each other and the staff. Just a beach-y, easy going vibe serving up great food at the foot of the ocean. We ate there several times during our stay on the island and will be back this summer!!

It’s a very cute sit down restaurant. The only restaurant that is right on the beach. For that alone it’s worth going to. The drinks were nice and the food was good. The lamb shank was my favorite and the chicken thighs were nice. The rice was over cooked and under seasoned.

Food was incredible. Maybe the best meal I’ve ever had at a restaurant. I had the sesame crusted salmon. My girlfriend got the octopus and loved it. Atmosphere was great. Waiter and host were very nice. However the two bartenders at the bar were pretty rude to my girlfriend for asking a question and talked about her and laughed while she was right there. Other than that it was great.

I didn’t appreciate how Molly put the menu down and walk away, and keep looking at me and took long to take my order. Then walk away as I put my order in it just felt as she was bother by me not sure why. The man that was behind the bar help me he was nice. Then I had to come back to return my order it was the wrong order. I order classic wings they gave me buffalo wings. He told her it was the wrong order and she roll her eyes at me. I just didn’t like her attitude. I work in customer service and I would treat a customer that way.

Lovely 39th anniversary dinner seated outside near the ocean boardwalk but spoiled by the behavior of a waiter who challenged our tip and requested more money. My husband and I have been fortunate to travel this world extensively and we have dined in many fine restaurants and local bistros which have been fairly rated over the years (I’m a Google Level 7 reviewer). When deciding what to leave for a tip after the meal, we consider our servers’ attitude, attentiveness to requests, assistance choosing menu items and the sort of magic that we sometimes witness where the server anticipates what we might request and follows through in an ingratiating manner. We are aware that tipping behavior varies based on location, whether or not the restaurant has charged a service fee etc. Over the years we have never been challenged about tips left. Not here! We calculated a 15% tip on the food sub total before tax. Having visited the restaurant four days before our dinner, and reading the menu i enquired as to whether the restaurant could place a special order for champagne - this being a celebration of our 39th anniversary. I was told that the restaurant does not place such orders for customers. So we agreed to pay restaurant $25 corkage fee and made a trip to Patchogue to buy a nice bottle. So when we received our check we used the same approach that we’ve applied for years: tip base calculated on the quality of service based on the sub total before tax. For exemplary service we often pay 20% or more, for good service 15% and rarely lower percentages. We initially gave 15% on the subtotal for food, not including the champagne that we brought. We handed the bottle to the welcoming staff when seated and in about 5 min it appeared on the table with no ice. We had to remind the waiter to bring ice and made multiple requests for bread. Pouring was inconsistent during the meal but not a major calamity. So at the meal’s end we calculated and paid 15% on the food order and not on the tax or corkage. Acceptable service we reckoned but not extraordinary. him an additional tip. I excused myself to use the restroom and the waiter came over to discuss his tip. He said that 20% is typical for good New York City restaurant. My husband paid over an extra $10 after the waiter requested 20%. This was truly galling behavior. I’m posting lovely meal photos and the atmosphere was good but if his colleagues behave similarly expect a shakedown after paying the bill!

Limited menu with high prices, but that’s expected on Fire Island. Lobster bisque was cool and a bit bland. Burger was delicious but came with literally 5 fries. Service was average.

They didnt explain until after we ordered drinks and apps that we had to order lunch to sit at a table...when the place was empty. The drinks also tasted like bad tap water.

The selections are varied, well prepared and ingredients pared well. Pricing could be more reasonable for tradition "diner" platters. Drinks are overpriced.

We have been going here for the past few summers, about 4 or 5 times each summer. While we do like it, the current August 2025 menu is a major disappointment. Nothing appealed to us, so we had to go elsewhere. This menu was put together as an afterthought, we felt embarrassed by inviting our friends. Hopefully next year they will have a better chef 👩‍🍳 🙏🏻 😉

The octopus is exquisite. The chicken is good but very small for the price and salad underwhelming. Would have been great overall if the waiter did not demand a bigger tip. Especially after not offering tap water but making us pay a 14$ still water bottle… The host welcoming customers, on the other side, was great. Terrasse is nice. Location is great.

Nice spot. Friendly staff. The food took forever. The brussel sprouts appetizer was really bland. Just kind of regular ole Brussels. My friends both had burgers and both said it wasn't worth the price. I am vegan, and was told they had a plethora of vegan options, they did not. They found a vegan lasagna in the back, it was not good at all. They use what seems to be Daiya cheese on top, which doesn't melt it just kind of hangs out. The vegetables inside of it were crunchy and not as soft as I would have expected. It didn't have much flavor other than tomato sauce and oregano. Extremely disappointing. Delicious fries though.

T
Tai Gei

Maybe I went on an off day but the place was packed so I decided to eat there. The oysters were tiny. Plus the cocktail suace didn't have much of a kick it tasted more like ketchup with the smallest pinch of horseradish. So over $30 for a dozen I was left disappointed. I also ordered the fish and Chips. The Chios delicious however the fish could of been better. Started off with crunchy but quickly followed by slimy texture. I wished I orderd the burger because it looked very tasty.

First time at this restaurant. Sat at the bar and the food and drinks were fine, though they were oit of several items. The bartenders were very attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, a gentleman, apparently the owner/manager, walked up next to us and called out one of the bartenders repeatedly saying, "You need to leave, you're fired!" Despite the issues any supervisor has with an employee, it should be handled discretely whenever possible and behind closed doors. No one deserves to be publicly humiliated. So many supervisors need proper training, but an owner should know better. We spoke to him and told him as much. We are business owners and would never dream of humiliating or employees, publicly or privately. Hopefully he learns from this.

Ordered a dozen of raw oysters but they were all sandy and small (not much to swallow), had to spit out most of them. I learned swallowing broken pieces of shells and sands are not good for you.

The food portion here is just sad. The photo of the poke bowl is $28. And the chicken wings are $21 for 5 wings. This is just ridiculous.

A
Adebowale Prest

First the location is great and the service and staff are professional, polite and good. The desert was okay. But the food ...The food is just sad. I had a hunger headache, and I am known to always clean my plate. I could not finish my dinner, neither my best friend. We could not. I have never before been disappointed in lamb. The shrimp cocktail was a gamble (tomorrow will tell). The Ahi was meh with a very sad solitary baby bok chow. The dinner ranges $45-85. I expect flavor, not meh seasoned with confusion. But again, the atmosphere is great. Reservations recommended. Maybe we were there on an off night.

R
Rodney Clara

Staff was exceptionally nice, great seating and view. Unfortunately the food was micro portioned. I was almost expecting a second serving lol. For the price paid you would expect something a bit more. It seems as though the portions from last year have been reduced even more. This makes me question making the trip out from the Pines to eat here.

I ordered a poke bowl for $30 and thought I would get a decent entre. What I got was a half-sized salad decorated with a few pieces of tuna on top. After I paid at the end, I told the waiter the poke bowl is too small, he just shrugged and said “it’s a poke”.

I ordered a poke bowl for $30 and thought I would get a decent entre. What I got was a half-sized salad decorated with a few pieces of tuna on top. After I paid at the end, I told the waiter the poke bowl is too small, he just shrugged and said “it’s a poke”.

Slow service and poor quality food. Look elsewhere for a fire island meal, you’ll be overcharged and underserved here.

Cash only on the patio - feel free to use our ATM with a $5 fee. Bad business.

Sub par food, very slow service. Look elsewhere, whether an elevated dining experience or casual dinner, sandcastle was a major miss.

BAD food and highly overpriced. I had the escarole caesar salad and it was a joke. Average service. Stay away.

We came in tonight to have a drink at the bar and the bartender was so rude and condescending that the 7 of us just looked at each other in shock and left. I am sure this place makes money hand over fist but if I were the owner I wouldn’t want my staff scaring customers off, especially on a post season evening. Bummer that people in the “service industry” act like that.

My experience was great until I was forced to pay for drinks that I didn't like and send back right away, server was great and also manager but the fact that I had to pay for drink then we didn't like it just dosen't make any sense at all. The answer I got from management was that it was something in all the Island wish is not true. They also said that it was a restaurant policy. is that even a think? If is that true. I just don't think is right.

Wow what a BAD experience. We simply asked for the check to be split 4 ways and it was like we were asking for the world!? No sign that says cash only. Our server never explained that there was any issue with the card reader. Very poor communication from the server all the way to the management. First we were told that you could only do one card but never told why? Then one of the people in our party went to inquire about the situation and it was a severely angry backlash from the staff. The staff and the manager mock out entire group and actually clapped when we left. I work in the service industry and it seems like there is poor or lacking leadership. I would not recommend.

Nice spot for sure - loved the bar setting! However the sassiness of the bartender was off-putting! If only there was a way for them to be slightly more civil. Drinks overpriced and mediocre.

The steamers weren't clean. The food was plain bad. I remember this place being better. The shrimp cocktail was absolutely not fresh. Just terrible.

So I have never been here before so we wanted to try their food the castle burger was 30 dollars and it is arguably the WORST burger I have ever tasted. Even over public school lunch. They charred my bun and I asked for medium well burger and got that charred as well. The entire burger tasted just burnt and when I brought this up to management they just gave me a new bun. It's was dry and didn't have any flavor other than burnt and I was really disappointed that a meal that ended up being more than a 100 bucks ( my friend ordered a burger as well) I ended up being so dissatisfied even the drinks were not good I am Soooooo glad I didn't order any raw oysters I just know it wouldn't have ended well. Anyway if your at fire island go to Cherry's instead.

Definitely don’t get the fish tacos! The tortillas were burnt, the fish dry, the cream dry. I took a bite and couldn’t eat anymore. Let the server know. Apparently there were other complaints. But when the bill came it was still there. You pay for the view. The host unfriendly, the server not responsive, the food lacking. The view though was pleasant.

The food was awful sent back shrimp cocktail) $14 bottle pelegrino and $22 for dinner rolls the view is beautiful and service was excellent but the food is terrible we had 4 different dishes and the chicken dish was the only decent entree

My visit to Sand Castle was utterly disappointing and disheartening. Let's break down the nightmare: Appalling Service: The waiter was not just condescending but outright arrogant. It felt like he was doing me a favor by taking my order. To top it off, their racist behavior was shockingly blatant and unacceptable. Portions are a Joke: Each dish had portions smaller than your average appetizer at a decent NYC restaurant. Seriously, who serves such minuscule portions and expects customers to be satisfied? Food Quality: Okay, let's talk about the food. It was... alright. Nothing to write home about, just mediocre at best. Certainly not worth the price they charge. Hidden Fees: Imagine my surprise when I saw a $10 fee added to my bill for "small plates for appetizers." No prior notice, no explanation, just a blatant rip-off. Absolutely disgraceful. The Only Saving Grace: The only positive thing about this place is the view of the ocean. But let's be real, you don't come to a restaurant for the view alone. In conclusion, save your time, money, and dignity. Avoid Sand Castle at Cherry Grove at all costs unless you enjoy being treated poorly, served minuscule portions, and being ripped off left and right.

We had great service and the place looks nice. BUT, the food was so lackluster! The corn “risotto” was plain white rice with a light broth and what seemed like canned corn (none of the creaminess of a real risotto with Arborio rice). We also ordered pasta and it was very tasteless. Given the price, the food should taste amazing.

The food was really good but the waiter served me $14 sparkling water without letting me know Of course I paid for it , but not fair play Not coming back if that is house policy

Beautiful restaurant with a great location. The food was disappointing. My guest had the Peruvian Chicken, the portion was ridiculously tiny. He was done in 3 bites. My medium-rare burger was burnt. It had barely any cheese . It didn't have the onions and BBQ rhat

the waiter made us wait a long time he arrive with a good attitude . After this the food take 1 hour The burgers are not bad 6-10 The steak was the problem, dry and tasteless. We asked for it to be thrown away and asked for the bill, but we only left $20 for the meat problem. The waiter followed us to the exit to ask for more, leaving him a total of 35 dollars for his poor service. Fire island it’s not the island we used to visit and support
