Visited Sept 2023 and I was really wowed by their opening Hassun course! It had amazing Japanese kaiseki-style dishes. Definitely a unique experience that deserves 3 stars!
One of the more popular 3 star Michelin Restaurant in Northern California/Sonoma Valley area. My friend paid close attention to reservations and booked ahead for a Monday night. She made a reservation for 2 and paid ahead of time. I looked at reviews because I was pescatarian at the time and I opted for pescatarian instead of vegetarian but I read someone’s vegetarian reviews and they enjoyed it! I also read ahead what to expect and it if heavily Japanese influenced so I prepared myself for that. There’s plenty of street parking and they have a small parking lot outside. Service was amazing and it’s nice and sleek inside. We were welcomed with a welcome drink in their open concept entrance. Their sushi starter set up is beautiful and delicious! We went with a bottle of white wine from Austria to go with our meal and it paired well especially with the seafood. We didn’t know how many courses there were. But for the main courses I got a scaled fish instead of wagyu, I loved my fish, and then there were some duck dishes and I had more vegetables. Was definitely stuff and I really enjoyed all of the local veggies. Our servers were super friendly. The meal was about 3-4 hour which is typical. Overall a great experience, I know people have a hard time getting reservations but always try to look ahead!
Partner took me here, this is his fav Michelin star restaurant in the bay area. Food and service were outstanding. Every dish showed incredible attention to detail, making the entire experience feel refined and thoughtful. We arrived for the 7:45 pm seating and were promptly seated after 5 min kitchen observation with some tea tasting, welcomed with a beautiful array of delicate starters and a warm introduction to the “show”. Each course was carefully crafted and sophisticated. All the dishes were exceptional. My partner mentioned that the menu is completely changed every 2–3 months, and we were amazed at how they manage to make every dish so delicious despite the frequent changes. We tried the non-alcoholic pairing, which was creative and thoughtfully matched. Super delicious. Desserts were well balanced and satisfying. The service was among the best, attentive, warm, and genuinely passionate. Parking is available in the back, though spaces are limited. Charging is available, super convenient! A truly memorable meal that lives up to its Michelin stars. I had a wonderful time here with my partner and the 9-week little boy in my tummy.
The most exquisite expediency with delicious meals and impeccable service. Every bit transforms into different continents. Tasting menu with wine pairings is definitely a way to explore this unique experience. I can't wait to return!
What an expereince! Staff were amazing. Food was excellent. And the non-alcohlic pairings were super tasty. We did not stay at the hotel.
Great food and service. Strong Japanese influence with local ingredients. Wine was great but expensive compared to European three star spots. Knowledge about the food varied among the waiters - one told us the cabbage dish was all fresh cabbage, then ten minutes later we listened to a different waiter tell the table next to us that it was half fermented cabbage (and that was a pattern). Duck was a highlight - blew EMP duck out of the water. I appreciated the use of sound dampening materials on the interior.
Had dinner here two nights ago, and can't stop thinking about it. What a dreamy experience it was. We had a 10-course tasting menu with the mid-level wine pairing. It's really more than "10 courses" because some courses have more than one part to them. Despite that, we didn't feel overly fed (as is often the case with multi-course dining experiences). We were certainly fed enough, but it wasn't too much. It really was perfect. And the wine pairing was similar - generous enough without too much. Every single morsel of food was beyond delicious. And we loved all the wines too. At this price point, I have to share one bit of critical feedback, which is that the service doesn't quite match the food in terms of pure excellence. The service was certainly great and friendly and informed. But there were a few hiccups that surprised me for a 3M dining experience at this price point. Nonetheless, this is the best fine dining experience I've ever had, and I hope to return again in the future. Wow, delicious.
A unique 3-Michelin-starred fusion of farm, inn, and restaurant. The 11-course tasting menu is a love letter to Sonoma County, often featuring ingredients from their own farm. The Japanese kaiseki influence is clear in the meticulous presentation. The service is gracious and unhurried. An immersive, luxurious culinary journey.
We visited specifically for the garden tour, and it exceeded expectations on every level. What stands out immediately is the discipline and intentionality behind the entire operation—nothing feels decorative or performative. Every bed, pathway, and growing structure exists for a reason, tied directly to seasonality, sustainability, and the culinary vision of the restaurant. The tour offers real insight into how food is grown, harvested, and thoughtfully integrated into the dining experience, creating a closed-loop system that few places execute at this level. It’s both educational and inspiring, especially for anyone who values provenance, craftsmanship, and long-term stewardship of the land. This isn’t just a garden—it’s a working ecosystem that underpins everything the property stands for. An exceptional experience and a benchmark for what farm-driven hospitality should look like.
Restaurants of this class are not always worth it, sometimes at the end of the meal you don’t feel like the money was well spent or the experience was special. That is not the case here. Everything was top notch. From the attentive and warm service, to the glassware, decor and ambiance. Of course the food was great and the wine pairing superb.
This Restaurant is very probably one of the best in the world in our opinion. Fourth visit. Exceptional Food, Wine, Service and Atmosphere. Highly recommended. Our only suggested area for improvement this evening was our Sommelier. He spoke so fast as he described each wine pairing, we could barely understand him. He seemed like he wanted to be somewhere else. Otherwise 5 *
Wow, wow, wow! We had an amazing meal at Single Thread for my brother‘s birthday. The food is delicious and beautifully presented, the drinks are very good, and the service is impeccable. They have definitely earned their three Michelin stars. It was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The food was great and so was the service. Shoutout to Matthew and Ben! My husband and I split the wine paring. We did the middle wine paring which was $500. When you split the wine paring there is an additional charge of $75 but you do each get your own glasses vs sharing the wine paring where you share the same glass. We did visit the roof top terrace at the beginning of the night to enjoy the sunset and have a drink. Those drinks are a separate charge. The only down side (personal opinion) is that you can't do traditional cocktails, they don't have a liquor license because they are considered a winery. Overall it was a great experience, the food was amazing and the food was presented very nicely (especially the first dish). We also got a picture at the end of the night with some of the staff in the kitchen which was cool. We've never done a picture with the staff which might be something we start to do when we visit other Michelin restaurants!
We visit around twice a year. Having been to every single 3 in the US, this is still our favorite in the US and stacks high against the international 3s in Europe and Asia. Just one critique, I don't always walk away feeling full, some menus need a bit more substance. Also, I get that the margins are extremely thin but I don't always feel like the value proposition equals out, especially if you look at the highest tier wine pairing. However, the staff is professional and I've always been impressed by the service.
Celebrated my birthday at Single Thread and it was an unforgettable experience! The 10-course meal showcased incredibly high-quality ingredients with stunning presentation. Each dish was full of flavor and delightful surprises. By the seventh course, we were already wonderfully satisfied—such generous portions! The food was exceptional and absolutely worth every penny. If you love fine dining, this is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!
Our favorite Michelin 3 stars restaurant with the most impressive and delicious dishes. Beautiful presentation and complex flavors. Wide variety and plenty in portions. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy the whole 9 or 10 or 35 courses if you count the individual dishes. We will be back soon for our next big celebration. Thank you for your wonderful planning and preparation and all the efforts that went into each dishes.
Food and service were wonderful. The level of detail in each dish is such a delight. It was a great experience overall, elevated by the fantastic service. We arrived for the 4pm slot and were seated right on time. A mountain of delicate starters was prepared already at our table. We were introduced to the staff, the starters, and drink options. Each course was prepared in detail and sophistication that my palate is probably too simple to fully appreciate. I think they all tasted amazing except for the main course of duck with tomatoes in which the duck had a chewy bit of sinew that had to be spat back out. Otherwise the flavor was superb and my mouth is starting to salivate as I write this review. It is a good balance of healthy and tasty. I also got the non-alcoholic pairing which was very cool and definitely pairs well with the food, but was a bit too sweet. I don’t think they need to be that sweet, but that’s subjective. I couldn’t finish everything and would just go for the wine pairing if there is a next time. The desserts had a good balance otherwise. The service from the staff was the best I’ve had in the US. They were so attentive and thoughtful from the start to end. They seem to enjoy their work and it makes the experience special. Parking is available behind the back but it might get full since the lot is rather small. Overall, it was a memorable meal and lives up to its Michelin stars.
We visited the restaurant on Feb. 22, 2025. The space is beautiful, and the hostess was professional and welcoming. Compared to other three-star Michelin restaurants we have visited, the flavors were above average, while the creativity ranked near the top. Although we still felt a bit hungry after lunch—likely because many dishes were more plant-focused—the presentations were original and exquisite. However, the service was surprisingly dismissive for a restaurant of this caliber. Our waiter often showed little interest when I asked about ingredients or preparation methods. When we received the bill, I noticed we had been charged $300 per person for the wine pairing, though we had been told it would be $200 per person at the start (all of this was communicated verbally; no menu was shown). I pointed this out, and the waiter simply replied, “Oh, I punched in the wrong number!” He walked away with the original bill and returned with the corrected version—still without offering any apology or showing concern. We have dined at many Michelin-starred restaurants, but this was the first time we experienced such insincere service.
TLDR: Overall a 6/10. Review is for the restaurant. Food was delicious. Service was subpar and left something to be desired. I did not feel like I was receiving service of Michelin distinction or left to feel a valued customer. This was our first 3-star Michelin restaurant and we booked here for our wedding celebration. By the way they met us at the door and from the service we received until we sat down, you would think otherwise. We unfortunately were almost 30 minutes late due to a schedule conflict and the restaurant was notified earlier that day (multiple apologies for the delay and appreciation for understanding) and also before we left our location in east bay. From their response, they seemed understanding, however upon being greeted, we felt the service was cold and almost bipolar. Strike 1. Anyways, I decided to look past it and hoped the rest of the meal was more promising. Now onto the food - everything was delicious and beautifully plated. To begin, the food/small bites were already placed at the table which I thought was due to us being late but upon watching other tables, we noticed that that is how they serve the first course. The sommelier recommended a wonderful sake based off of my preferences. My partner had the non-alcoholic pairing which was one of the best we've had. The dishes were tasty, creative, and fresh which I appreciated. There were a few interesting dishes that I raised an eyebrow to, but still appreciated overall. For the service. It overall was not horrible, however that is NOT the expectation when I go to a 3-Michelin star restaurant. I expect top-tier service and attentiveness which I have experienced from other restaurants of even lesser ranking. Other places I've been to will walk swiftly to your table if there is even a hint that there is something wrong. There were a lot of weird bumps during the dinner service and the woman who was in charge of our table mainly was the one to give a lot of off-vibes and attitude like we inconvenienced her. First off, we noticed that they offered to take a photo of the group dining whether it was a couple or a big party and never asked us if we wanted a photo with the first course even though we were clearly taking photos and trying to find a good angle for a selfie for a few minutes. I don't care if they don't normally ask for photos to be taken but if they do it for other tables and not us, I get a vibe that they're avoiding us for some reason. We saw this happen/be asked of for two tables seated after us - not horrendous, not a dealbreaker, just *weird*. Next, one of the waiters during the later part of the meal set down a course of our food and did NOT explain what it was, just placed it and walked away. HUH? I've never had that happen at a Michelin restaurant of ANY level. I did not want to start my course without someone explaining what it was or the work that went into it and so I asked a waitress that was walking by who apologized and explained what it was. Other notes - the interior is well decorated, clean, and gives off Japandi vibes. However, the music is very soft, low energy and almost elevator-music-like. Kind of boring imo. It was also not loud enough to cover the sound of tables nearby so while my partner and I talked in gentle voices, we could hear almost two tables over. Normally restaurants with any distinction will either place tables spread out enough so you don't constantly overhear conversations OR play music at a volume suitable to cover those conversations while allowing you to hear your dinner party. Lastly, I've always gotten a cute extra take-home treat like a baked good or coffee or tea leaves... but the one we got were plant seeds. Which is fine and cool, but I don't garden. So I have little use for these seeds which I'll likely just forget about in my drawer. Anyways, driving out to the middle of nowhere for an experience that cost us over 1k and left us feeling underwhelmed, especially for a wedding celebration? As my partner eloquently put it, single thread will be a single visit.
We went to SingleThread to celebrate my mom’s 70th birthday. While the food and presentation were both exceptional, I left very disappointed by the lack of special attention given to the milestone birthday we were there to celebrate. Having dined at other top Michelin restaurants like French Laundry and Alinea, I felt confident when booking SingleThread that her birthday would be made to feel like a special occasion. However, I left feeling that our dinner lacked any sort of special acknowledgement or personal touches that I would’ve expected from a restaurant of SingleThread’s caliber – a personalized commemorative menu, an offer to tour the kitchen, or at least a special dessert or candle or birthday acknowledgement at the end of the meal. Overall, I felt the experience was very impersonal. What made it all more disappointing was that I was put in touch with the GM over email and responded with a note sharing my feelings, and got no response. I even resent the note in case he didn’t receive it - and still heard nothing. Not what I expected from a 3-star Michelin restaurant.
Be careful when booking online with open table. It is confusing as you might think your booking dinner reservations but end up booking the farm experience which is not a dining experience. Then they won’t let you cancel without a full payment. I’ve heard great things about the restaurant but can’t tell you since we were not able to experience it. They should be more informative in their marketing. Hope this saves someone else the $35 per person reservation fee I had to pay.
We were disappointed as we went with very high expectations as it is a three Michelin restaurant. Service wasn’t great, we were sitting down for half an hour without anybody checking on us, had dessert on the rooftop and we waited for other 20 min without even been offer a coffee or water. Food didn’t surprised us, even tho every plays is very beautify done. But in general not worth the price.
This review is about the restaurant. The service felt noticeably cold and detached, falling well short of what one expects from a three-Michelin-star establishment. Given the exorbitant price tag, I was genuinely surprised and disappointed by the indifferent “whatever” attitude from the staff.
This is a truly difficult review to write. There is a phenomenon, I would refer to as the emperor's new clothes syndrome, which has been demonstrated in social experiments such as when an "upscale" mall outlet shoe store was opened entirely inventoried with Payless shoes, but marketed (and marked up) to Prada pricing. Customers bought $25 shoes for $700 and then were interviewed raving about the quality and how worth the money the shoes were. When someone has paid an exorbitant amount of money for something they are extremely hesitant to do anything except call it exceptional and speak its praises. If "Instagrammability" and the use of local artisinal ingredients are what stars are made of, this restaurant deserves 3 stars. If service and actual taste of the food have anything to do with it, the rating is incomprehensible. I truly cannot make heads or tails of the 3-star rating here. To my mind, a one star restaurant is one which may have two or more "misses" on the menu. A two star has no more than one miss, and a 3 star has zero misses, regardless of one's palate, it is exceptional across the board and universally recognizable as such. One cannot help but exclaim in delight at each and every bite. Single Thread, quite literally, to my palate, had only a single bite that even approached the joyousness of a 3 star bite, and considering its existence in a vacuum, I cannot begin to understand how it has even one star. Imagine attending a symphony and only one note being played in tune. It would hardly be worth mentioning. These bites were not mere "misses" in the traditional sense, either. In all my life of fine dining, I have never had the compulsion to send a single bite uneaten back to the kitchen. I have had bites that were not entirely to my personal taste and yet were understandable, yes, but this was different. Here I sat and stared at _two_ of the courses, questioning if I could bring myself to choke it down or suffer the embarrassment in all directions of sending it back. One of which was so bitter that it quite literally tasted as though it had been sprinkled with ground up aspirin. Naturally I forced the bites down to save embarassment to all but I shall go to my grave remembering and questioning how on Earth these bites could exist on a Michelin-anything menu. There are unstarred restaurants in San Francisco that dramatically eclipse what is on offer here, at a fraction of the price and indeed, I'd be extremely upset if I had paid just $100 for this meal. At over $700 I feel a small claims case is in order. It was, quite frankly, one of the worst meals I have had anywhere and I have certainly never been more disappointed, having never been disappointed by even a single bite at another 3 star establishment. To be only mildly impressed by one bite, literally disgusted by two, and found all the rest of the bites here merely "not bad", it truly was a terrible experience and I would strongly recommend going literally anywhere else on your next night out.
What a disappointment. I ate at SingleThread two years ago and it was incredibly memorable, so was excited to return! The restaurant reached out to instruct us to arrive at 7:30, where we'd have a drink on the roof before our 8 p.m. reservation. We did so, and then stood awkwardly in their small lobby for 20 minutes before being brought to the roof. With a place that tells you being 5 minutes late forfeits your reservation, they're fine with letting you sit for 20 minutes? On to the meal where we did the "mid-price" ($500) wine pairing. The person pouring was the same from our last visit which excited me until I realized she was pouring THE EXACT SAME wines, from two years ago. That service was perfunctory and robotic and ambivalent and (given it cost more than the meal) a total letdown. We consumed courses as they were brought to us and felt we were moving at the pace of service but by the end of the meal the staff was turning off lights and closing doors and it was VERY clear we needed to hurry up our ($1000 per person) meal. Just a bummer from start to finish and I definitely don't need to eat there a third time and would suggest you strongly consider what type of experience you want before you go as well.
Sadly disappointed. I've been to many Michelin starred restaurants including another three starred and was very disappointed with Single Thread. It started with a trip up to their rooftop patio which was nice, but nothing special. I was, however, excited to see that they had a number of beers from Russian River Brewing including a number of collaborations between Single Thread and Russian River. The waiter described the Commonner beer as their homage to Anchor Steam, of which I was a huge fan. Despite the price of $21 for a 12 Oz bottle I ordered one. It was the worst beer I ever had. It literally tasted like a dirty horse stall and probably the only beer I've ever had that I couldn't finish. Turning to the food, the first course was a beautifully decorated log with assorted small seafood bites. With the exception of one, they were all very good. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the meal and while all of the courses were beautifully prepared, they just didn't taste very good. Also, to me, texture is very important and several of the dishes had the texture of strained baby food. It was a huge turn off. In the end, many of the dishes went unfinished. Definitely not what I expect for the price or from a 3 star restaurant.
Last time I came was also for a celebration. They said there would be written cards placed when we arrive and made it special for us with special desserts etc. But there was nothing special until I reminded them when we were leaving and they remembered to bring out the cards. I think I sent an email about this afterwards but didn’t get anything. Also I asked for a translated menu for some members and got no reply. This time we haven’t even arrived but I was told today that deck is closed and our farm tour is canceled due to rain. We can’t bring our cake nor can we have candles for birthday wishes ( my older friend cares about that). The website says we can email to request cancel or reschedule but it was not approved (that was days ago.). We have been to all Michelins restaurants multiple times in the bay by now. I am the most disappointed here, though maybe my expectations were too high for single thread.
Extremely disappointed with my experience at Single Thread, after all of the hype and the heavy price point I was excited for my experience with a friend. We waited for 20 minutes (even though we were the first guests) awkwardly drinking a welcome broth or something very unmemorable in the entry with another couple, I would assume that the wait was for the 20 or so bites you get when you first sit at the table (if that is the case why not do the reservation 15 minutes later and have a seamless entry). When we got the table we had one of the servers ramble on for 5-10 minutes, so much so I lost focus, he then asked if we had any allergies (even though we had pre-stated there was an oyster allergy) he quickly grabbed the oyster from the show piece and put it in his hand behind his back then quickly pulled it back out and asked if i wanted it... no thank you LOL.... The service continued to disappoint, 2 courses and 2 wine pairings were dropped and presented whilst either I or my friend was in the bathroom, not something you would expect on a table for 2 at a 3* michelin restaurant. Now the food, it was all unmemorable, nothing was delicious, and I honestly did not think that the food was beautiful in the way that everyone makes it seem. A very disappointing experience overall and to be completely honest I think they won their Third star and just started coasting on the hype, it was an absolute waste of time, not worth the drive, not worth the money and to be honest it wasnt worth the time. Finally, the weird lemon palette cleanser (pictured below) was absolutely gross and weirdly placed.
