I’ve dined at the Baleen Kitchen many times for special occasions. The general atmosphere is consistently peaceful, with the marina just outside, a warm fireplace in both the dining and lounge areas, and a top tier service team that will always know when you need assistance (ordering, drinks, questions, tab, etc.); such a serene dining experience is unmatched. The food is pristine, with consistently beautiful plating presentation. If I ever remembered, I would take a picture before diving into my meal. But alas, I can’t help but to cut into my food and indulge before remembering to take a photo. Maybe one day. Tonight I had Ribeye, medium-rare, served with potatoes, broccolini and a delicious herbal sauce. As a steak person, I don’t expect restaurants to make a perfect medium-rare. Even at some highly recommended steakhouses in the area I’ve almost always been served a rare steak, or medium — lacking much of the natural juices. Tonight my steak was cooked and dressed better than I could have done myself; perfectly juicy as each bite nearly melted in my mouth, I hardly even had to chew. Needless to say, the Baleen Kitchen is at the top of my list when it comes to any special occasion. For consistency, environment, service and overall quality, there are very few restaurants in greater Los Angeles which could compare to this dining experience.
Took some friends and my wife for a pre birthday dinner and Chef Hung and his amazing team totally blew us away! The incredibly thoughtful mostly seasonal menu is a study in what it means to have access to some of the best produce in the world and chef and his team execute dishes that showcase this with extreme creativity. 5 stars isn’t enough!
Went here with my wife on date night and the food was great. I don't usually pick salads for dinner but the one here was delicious, crispy with a nice dressing. The salmon dish was amazing and desert topped it all off. Drinks were great too, well made and solid. Best money spent in the area, definitely worth the price.
Dined at Baleen several times while staying at the Portofino Hotel & Marina. The views here are beautiful. Nice breakfast selections (Avocado Toast Bar rocks!), and our dinner experiences were terrific as well. Cozy fireplace, excellent cocktails mixed by knowledgeable bartenders, and warm, friendly service. Our favorite dishes were the crab dip, cioppino, and the swordfish Vera Cruz - best I ever had, honestly. Our daughter loved the flatbread. And we all really enjoyed the freshly baked house-made focaccia bread Chef Hung brought over as a little surprise...so nice!!
Lovely views and great food. Highlights for me were the focaccia with amazing tapenade, the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had, and of course the cioppino.
Delightful dinner here last night. Large interesting menu and we tried several different items and all were delicious. Group of 6 left very happy. Service was very good. Live singer was excellent.
Took my husband here for Father’s Day Dinner. We traveled from Texas for a little getaway and stayed here at the Portofino Hotel. Food and atmosphere here at the Baleen was simply phenomenal. Danny was the picture of professionalism. He was quite knowledgeable as to the menu and offered us the specials. I would seriously hop on a plane just to come back to have dinner here. It was that amazing!! Highly recommend.
This is such a great restaurant! Absolutely delicious food! We came here for dinner and breakfast. For dinner there was live music and they were such a good band! The service was wonderful. Very sweet and attentive. We will most certainly be coming back. Highly recommend!
Great place for breakfast. Birra Benedict must try (weekends only) and love their coffee. Great plus - they have a marina discount for people who own boats.
Dining at the Chef's Table with Chef Hung was an extraordinary experience from start to finish! The use of fresh ingredients, particularly the variety of melons, was nothing short of amazing. Each dish was crafted with such creativity and precision, resulting in flavors that were absolutely out of this world. Chef Hung’s expertise truly shone through every bite. Every course was a delightful surprise, leaving us eagerly anticipating the next. If you're looking for a dining experience that is both memorable and delicious, this is it! Highly recommend!
This restaurant was a perfection! I chose this place to introduce my boyfriend (soon to be fiance) to my parents for the first time, so I needed a place that's somewhat formal and casual at the same time. And I am so happy we chose this place! Once my parents got here, my dad was so happy with the harbor views on a beautiful sunny day. My mom was happy with the lovely decors/color schemes inside. They use elegant colors and chandeliers that go so well with ample amount of sunshine through the windows. Altogether, they create luxurious and comforting vibes. The food and coffee were both very delicious. My boyfriend was a chef for a while and is not easy on restaurant food. My parents also have different tastes/food preferences so picking a restaurant that pleases both of my parents is very difficult. For this place, however, we kept talking about how good each dish was. Later on that day, I heard my parents telling their friends how pleasant time they had :) All the staff we met (valet parking staff, receptionist, waiter, and others) were so nice and welcoming as well from the beginning to the end! I really want to thank Baleen kitchen to serve us with exceptional food and service on our important day. We are definitely visiting here again especially on our important days!
Nice restaurant / clubhouse atmosphere, great food, extremely friendly service, with a brilliant view across the marina. I had a Thai salad / poke bowl type thing that was very good. My partner had an everything burrito that I was instantly jealous of. The kids each had something suitable for their various allergies. Accidentally rocked up here just before noon on a midweek day ~ 3 weeks ago, lost and confused and stressed out with my toddler twins. Lost because part of the local area that we wanted to visit was closed for a festival (nothing to do with the Baleen team). Mark and the team were super helpful and just next level friendly. If I start detailing it, this will be a much longer review. Come check it out.
I had a great dining experience here. I was sat right away without reservations. Our waiter Rebecca was very kind and offered great recommendations. The place has a great atmosphere and the food was amazing. We had the flatbread 10/10. The tuna tacos& steak, wow! For dessert I had key lime pie. Everything was made to perfection! You can tell management really cares, highly recommended.
We celebrated a birthday there last night with a large party. We were very happy with the quality of the dinner, the gracious service and lovely ambiance. The view is beautiful and the restaurant is tastefully decorated.
The eggs benedict (all variations) are delicious! The staff are friendly. You also get a beautiful view of the marina. What more can you ask for?
The food was amazing. Chef Hung did a fantastic job tailoring a menu to cater to our party (we had the pleasure of sitting at the chef’s table). We could tell Chef Hung really cares about his craft, and prepares and serves his dishes with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that really shine through in the dishes. I highly recommend the experience should you have the chance!
Such a hidden gem. I recently visited Baleen’s Kitchen for the first time and was blown away by the hospitality and culinary experience. Every dish was hand crafted and full of flavor. I was particularly excited to learn about their commitment to farm to folk dining. And the view! Such an amazing experience. Def my new favorite restaurant.
This a great place to come for drinks and appetizers or even dinner. Food is very good, bartender is friendly. The view is beautiful. Live music is excellent and not obnoxiously loud.
Absolutely my favorite restaurant! I adore the fact that it's never overcrowded, providing a sense of privacy. Nestled in a stunning location with an enchanting view of boats, it's a truly beautiful place. The food is exceptionally delicious, and the overall atmosphere is simply fantastic.
Great spot for happy hour! The $8 burger was solid, but the drinks and marina view really made the night. Huge shoutout to Maria—friendly, attentive, and the made the night even better.
Memorable. One word to sum up Baleen Kitchen. The flavors and quality ingredients makes every dish delicious. The service is outstanding due to the staff's friendliness and attentiveness. If you're looking for a nice outing, stop by this Southbay gem and enjoy the ocean breeze and scenery.
Hi Been staying this hotel but first time ordered this brunch here. Got brisket Benedict and avocado toast. Generous amount of brisket seasoned like birria soft and tender with bottom some mashed potato base sauce and pouched eggs on top. Toast was pretty decent. Served with latte. Tasted all decent. Me and my love like these all... Not the best but way better than other togo brunch...
This restaurant exceeded my highest expectations! My family and I split the Hamachi Crudo, Focaccia, and Caesar salad to start and they were all incredible. The true stars were the entrees. My mom and I shared the Porcini dusted scallops and the Swordfish- both perfection. Loved the Sticky Toffee Pudding but the sorbet was surprisingly our favorite. All worth the price for this quality. Great ambience and staff..will be back.
Simply Outstanding! From the minute you walk up the steps, you're greeted with friendly faces. The dining area is beautiful, especially for a romantic evening. The bar is fabulous with an amazing selection of fine beverages. Moving onto the food, the squid starter is exquisite and just melts in your mouth. The Cioppino was to die for. I think I cried a little at how astonishing it tasted. The service was terrific, with very friendly staff. The views of the harbour were dazzling, especially with the evening breeze coming through the slightly opened windows. This restaurant deserves every bit of praise I read about it. It was so good, my wife and I went back the following evening to do it all again. I'm running out of words to describe Baleen Kitchen - phenomenal and exceptional indeed. Brilliant!
Great service and food. Very welcoming. Beautiful view of the harbor.
Baleen Kitchen offers some truly unique and delicious dishes. Their steak, chicken, and especially their grilled shrimp are outstanding—I haven’t found flavors like these anywhere else. Overall, I’d give them a 5-star rating. The only downside is that, since we were staying at the hotel, we had to walk outside to get to the restaurant. If the two buildings were connected, it would make the experience even better.
I can say I was truly satisfied with this restaurant and with this being the place to eat rnight where we were staying - The Portofino Hotel, this is a really good choice. The first meal I had here was a cheeseburger, because after the flight, that was the first thing I wanted. It was great, I really don't like my meat charred, but it was well done and I wanted it fast, so they tried to work with me I guess.... Anyhow, the rest of the food I had here was great! The poke, the salmon with eggs in the morning, their toast is awesome and the butter is amazing here!! The dressing for the salad is also great! They have daily specials here, which I wish I knew before, but now that I do, next time I go, I'll be on that! 🙂. When I went, it was taco Tuesday. It was yummy. Anyhow, it's an awesome atmosphere with the yatchs out in front; I can say, I do enjoy the food here and the atmosphere, when it's chill. And night I feel it can get a little noisy. But I'm writing because I did enjoy the food here. Whoever was behind the kitchen when I was eating my food did a great job! I enjoy this place when it's chill and relaxed, usually the mornings and the afternoons. I'll be coming again! Cheers from Texas! Thank you for the great food! 🤗🥗🥂
We ate breakfast here 3 times during our recent stay and the service and food were exceptional and the atmosphere was very relaxed and enjoyable. There is clearly an amazing chef behind the scenes here as the food is of top quality and served with care. Management is clearly doing there job as staff are giving guests a great experience. The property is old and could use a Refresh which is the only thing stopping me from giving it a perfect score but dont let it stop you from missing this diamond in the rough.
Very nice restaurant across from Portofino hotel and Marina. The service here is really good. They make everyone special. The restaurant is clean and neat. Their food are so good its worthwhile waiting. We have a big group and we don’t make reservation for Saturday breakfast so next time reservation is a must to do on the list. The staff are very friendly and respectful of their customers. Will always come here in Baleen Kitchen across Portofino Hotel.
Had a 16 people brunch arranged with dockside view. Great dockside restaurant for large group brunches. Food was great. Bloody Mary’s were beyond excellence. Service was a bit slow but overall an excellent experience.
The Baleen Kitchen is a hidden gem. Tucked away in the King Harbor Marina near The Portofino Hotel this iconic restaurant is a definite treat. While it is a little off the beaten path, it’s definitely worth the trip. My wife and I have stayed at the Portofino Hotel on multiple occasions and this is always our go to breakfast spot when we stay there. Service is always friendly and the restaurant has beautiful views of the harbor. Because it’s tucked away it’s nice and quiet in the area and can easily make you forget that you’re just minutes away from bustling LA. They have a modest menu that feels like it’s just the right size for the establishment. I’m a fan of the more modest menus that are well executed rather than large exhaustive menus of mediocre food. This place hits the mark. I do also like that because it’s further off the beaten path ice never seen it extremely busy the way one would expect a restaurant of that caliber to be in a place like LA. Overall a great experience and a must try. My friend and I stumbled across BALEEN kitchen on a Sunday morning. After looking through the menu, and talking with Barbie, the hostess we definitely wanted to relax and enjoy a meal after our walk along the waterfront. We were seated in a beautiful blue velvet tufted booth ( I would recommend making reservations for this booth). Alex was our server who has a great personality with a smile! I ordered the NOBLE CHOPPED SALAD, which was delicious, but it wasn't chopped. I think my salad was missing the roasted beets, but I didn't mention it, because it wad delicious and beautifully presented. My friend ordered the EGG TOAST and added cherry tomatoes. She enjoyed it. Weekends there is endless mimosas, but I am trying to be healthy so I opted for ice tea. The staff here are all very friendly and attentive. The decor reminded me of Cape Cod, casual elegance. I felt like I was on vacation. I will definitely return here again! What an oasis! The views of the boats on the Marina was so nice. If you want to be closer to the Marina, downstairs there is outside seating. Thank you Barbie and Alex for the great service!
Absolutely amazing food and service. Special thank you to Hector and Jonathan for a warm welcoming experience!!
The cioppino was my first foray into local seafood. What a wonderful introduction! The scallops were buttery, some of the fish just melted in my mouth, and the broth made everything worth trying. I'd eat anything in that tomato-saffron broth. The swordfish steak was also a hit - perfectly cooked with a great texture. Our service was spectacular; we felt very welcomed and taken care of. I highly recommend the Dark Horse cocktail.
This was a wonderful experience. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and service. I definitely recommend and will revisit.
We visited the Baleen Kitchen for the first time in August and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I’m trying to think of excuses to go back to LA so I can visit this restaurant again. Compliments to Chef Robbie!
I stayed at the Portofino hotel for a week on business travel, and got vouchers to eat here for breakfast everyday. This was such a bright way to start my days, I would get the American Breakfast, which comes with eggs, toast, potatoes, and a choice of meat. I’d also like to give my compliments to the staff. They were friendly and created a nice and relaxing atmosphere. The view overlooked the marina and all the boats. On my last day here, we got to breakfast right at 11am, which is usually when they start serving the lunch menu, but the staff went to the kitchen to make sure they kept it open for us to get our breakfast food. If youre staying at the Portofino, you definitely should try this restaurant. It’s right outside of the hotel.
We had a fantastic experience at Baleen Kitchen in Redondo Beach! The ambiance was lovely with a view of the marina as well as the ‘Super Friends Sing-Along’, which added a fun touch. The special of the day, a short rib ossobuco by Chef Robbie, was absolutely delicious, and the prime rib steak with chimichurri sauce might be best chimichurri I’ve ever had(the steak was very on point). One small suggestion: the specials were given on a printout instead of being explained by the waiter like I’ve experienced in a lot of restaurants, so I almost missed out on it. Be sure to ask about them. I’m glad I tried it because it was phenomenal! Overall, a great dining experience. We enjoyed it w/ the fam and I saw what appeared to be quite a few folks on date night.
A fantastic restaurant. Everything was superb. I ordered the classic Benedict with avocado-- cooked to perfection as well as the house potatoes and side salad. My spouse ordered the California burrito and I was able to taste the shrimp with the crema-- delicious! Fresh OJ and coffee and such a delightful waitress with a cute short haircut and glasses. Thank you!
My experience stopping at this restaurant was incredible! Jonothan was our server and he was phenomenal running the entire floor by himself including the bar smoothly! The food we tried was delicious and they also have a great beer selection. I highly recommend this place for adults looking for a nice view of the marina. Well behaved kids would also do well here, not so much a great spot for 10 and under
Highly recommend this restaurant — the food is delicious, the wine is excellent, and the atmosphere is calm and inviting. A perfect spot for a date.
We went for our wedding anniversary to celebrate four years of marriage. Treated like royalty. Highly recommend.
This Mother’s Day, our family decided to celebrate at BaleenKitchen in Redondo Beach a day early, a decision heartily endorsed by our children for their beloved mom and grandma. Nestled in the marina, just a stone’s throw from the Portofino Hotel, BaleenKitchen stands as one of the most stylish waterside dining spots in Los Angeles. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was greeted by breathtaking views, framed perfectly by the expansive windows lining the restaurant. It was as if each window was a canvas, showcasing the vibrant marina life in all its glory. Our brunch was a culinary journey of personal favorites. My wife savored her classic egg benedict, while I indulged in the Cali Burrito. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement; the burrito was a delightful ensemble of succulent shrimp, enveloped in a rich, flavorful sauce, and complemented by a medley of fillings that left my taste buds dancing. The service mirrored the quality of our meal—attentive, efficient, and unobtrusively prompt. As for the value, it was nothing short of impressive, especially considering the prime location. My shrimp-laden burrito was a steal at under $20. But the pièce de résistance was undoubtedly the view. Our table offered us a front-row seat to the serene harbor, a vista so enchanting it could easily grace the pages of a travel magazine. It was the perfect backdrop for our special celebration. In summary, BaleenKitchen is more than just a restaurant; it’s a destination that offers an experience as memorable as the occasion it honors. Whether you’re marking a milestone or simply in search of a meal with a view, BaleenKitchen is a choice that will not disappoint.

South bays unkept secret for brunch! Beautiful views, great views, and the perfect brunch menu. Shout out to Alex - great server and made us feel welcomed and was super attentive.
Ladies dinner in the bar area was a perfect holiday spot. We each really enjoyed our meals and our drinks were great. The holiday drink menu was wonderful, and had a nice variety. The Cioppino is some of the best I’ve had in a long time.
First hats off to Jazlynn she took to ask the chef if he would make the Sea Bass the original way they use to. She came back and the chef said okay. Customer Service at an all time high. This is how you keep a customer happy. I wasn’t interested in the new version. Jazlynn said it would take 35 mins it didn’t even take that long to get this wonderful tasty meal. I could have just went to heaven this meal was amazing. To the owner you have an amazing staff. Happy and ready to keep us the customer satisfied and happy as a kid on Christmas Morning. Before I go I told Jazlynn if the chef couldn’t make it the original way. That I wouldn’t want the sea bass so again hats off to Jazlynn and the amazing chef on staff tonight 12-17-2025 at around 6ish. Merry Christmas. Thanks for making my dream come true cook slightly crispy and moist what a combo.
Baleen kitchen is a very good place for brunch. The pancakes are very soft and have orange zest in for a very unique and delicious flavor. The pancakes come with blueberries, butter and maple syrup. Alex's breakfast burrito is also very good with the sour cream on the side. It has a very nice combination of egg, potatoes and cheese with sour cream and guacamole. Heuvo Redondos are also extremely flavorful and by far the best thing I have ever eaten. Overall, this restaurant is a very nice, family friendly place to eat.

More than surprised. Typically hotel restaurant food isn't good, it's more of a last option. I was pleasantly surprised with breakfast- Eggs Benedict was yummy! We liked it so much we went back for dinner. Dinner did not disappoint- risotto, salmon and key lime pie. I wouldn't go out of my way for this restaurant, but if I'm within a 10 mile radius, I'm definitely stopping by. Also, the view is so relaxing. Loved it
We had a great meal. They offer a lot of non alcoholic cocktail options which is really appreciated. Great homemade pasta. Yummy dessert. Graham gave us Wonder services. Truly friendly- really cares about his work.
The cornmeal pancakes are exquisite. I also like the California breakfast burrito. The avocado toast is exceptional. Most places can’t do it as well. Mimosas are good and the Bloody Mary’s are solid too. I also like the Marina view. It’s a good brunch spot.
Beautiful place in the Marina, parking is about $5 for a couple of hours . I was not impressed by the menu at all. There was no bottomless mimosas (weekend brunch) be aware. Ambiance, views and vibes are very nice but the food was not what I expected to be.
Very much liked the ambiance and upscale vibe. The service and view were great. Most of the food (lobster Mac and cheese, etc) were great, but my gin martini was weak and the Caesar salad lettuce was brown and wilted - so some good with the bad. They also had some fairly loud roaming guitar player entertainment which could be good or bad depending on your preference and proximity to the player! VictorB
The atmosphere is very nice. The staff was really top notch. I thought the food was good overall but the pastries were undercooked and doughy. The crab cake eggs Benedict was good and my sister really enjoyed the burrito.
We tried this ribeye steak and the risotto. My steak was cooked perfectly. I really liked the coffee ground rub and the risotto was decent. Atmosphere was nice. My wife enjoyed sitting by the fire. Customer service was also very good.

Not my favorite. Staff was pleasant but not overly engaging. Our drinks from the bar took a long time to come out. Their menu does not have any vegetarian options except for the sides. Also, my husband had food poisoning symptoms the next day and had to take two days off work. The only thing he ate that I didn't was the steak. The place has a nice ambiance and a nice view, but that isn't enough in my opinion. Also, I did not order room service while at the hotel because of our experience at dinner. One note, dessert was great.
The breakfast here is just alright. The Mom garden omelette was to full of vegetables and par cooked. No salt or seasoning added. The portions seem big for what they are but aren't justified by the price. The atmosphere is calming and uplifting. The views from the second floor are a nice distraction from how drab the food is
This was our first time at Baleen's Kitchen and the food was very delicious! Unfortunately I cannot give this restaurant a higher rating due to the service. Our reservation was at 7pm and we weren't greeted by our server and have our drinks order placed until around 7:20pm. We also placed our appetizer and dinner order at the same time since we had plenty of time to decide. Our appetizers came around 7:40pm and our drinks didn't arrive until 7:45pm. I've had very few dining experiences where it's taking 45 minutes to receive drinks; we ordered just a glass of red wine and a soda. The restaurant was not very busy. We were seating in the dining area and there was live music in the lounge so that made it pleasant to listen to while we waited.
I've eaten here a number of times over the years and normally love the place. This time was disappointing. Fig appetizer was handed to me. Strange and off-putting. Beet salad, bread and sorbet were very good. Steak was cooked nicely, but was very tough. Halibut tasteless. Fodue was tasty, although portions frugal.
Beautiful location, sub standard food delivery. This lovely restaurant is located right on the Marina, so your views are great - overlooking the harbour and boats. The wait staff are very friendly and helpful. This is a casual or dress up place, since it's tied to the hotel, meaning if you're a hotel guest you can put your bill on your room. The challenges we had with the restaurant was on the food timing and delivery. We ordered appetizers and entree's, and the waiter confirmed with us that we'd like the appetizers to come out early. Instead the wait for the appetizers was very long, and before they'd finished delivering the appetizers they began to deliver our entree's. Although we commented on this, as they delivered everything at the and time, the wait staff simply snowshed acknowledged the issue and did nothing. We wound up ordering more food, since the kids pancakes have a heavy lemon flavor (this flavor is not noted on the menu). Again, it took way too long to get a Mac and cheese and side of fries. Should we return, I hope they fix their food delivery time issue.
We continually try to support this local place as the Marina is such a nice area. Staff is vastly unknowledgeable on their wines. There's a noticeable absence of staff behind the bar at times. Few food items we've had have always been great. There's no real vibe even when having live music.
I would have loved to give this place 4.5 stars from the moment I walked in. But the being as wonderful as is was the kitchen was extremely slow getting food pushed out. This wasn't a busy night either. Once my table was served the food was very delicious, just wish it were about 15 minutes quicker. Otherwise nice place I my return post Covid to see if this was just an off night.
You would think with where this is located that the service level would match the atmosphere and food quality… but the portions don’t come close to what they wish to charge, and the servers could care less about getting things to you in a timely fashion. The resort should prioritize revamping this concept, but they seem too content assuming the view of the water will please the guests more.
Nice but pricey. Food was okay, service good but the place is very noisy. On top of that they had speakers blaring music. Who needs music when you barely hear each other over the dine of customers talking.Had dinner there on Christmas evening. A couple of the waiters spoke very loudly. Manager was very accommodating toning down the loud music. Suggestion: the restaurant needs more that two unisex toilets for such a large place.
Came here for Dine LA for dinner. The food was not bad, the steak and crabs were pretty good but it was so small for 2 people. My dessert was delicious, it was whiskey ice cream but I didn’t taste any whiskey so it was just vanilla. The Smokey nuts in the tart were delightful. I enjoyed the view of the marina as the sun set, but could not see the sunset the windows were in the wrong directions.

Disappointed. Arrived for my 8:15 reservation 10 minutes early and no one was at the host stand for nearly 10 minutes. Once the hostess came I was seated shortly thereafter and then it went downhill from there... The food was moderate at best and that's mainly due to it being lukewarm. If it was hot it would have been good. Also the crab dip, came with 4 bread slices. It should at least come with 6 for the size and probably would be served best with 8. It took nearly 30 minutes from the time I was sat down to be even acknowledged by staff and even poured water. We had to ask for service at this point 🤦🏾♂️ Please note the kitchen close at 9pm. So the only chance we had to order from the kitchen was the initial contact with the waitress. Sadly it was someone's birthday in my party but about time the waitress returned to retrieve our empty dishes and I asked about dessert she informed us that wasn't an option as the kitchen was closed. The place has a nice appearance but I'll never come back. It isn't that special for the wait or poor service. Even during the time of COVID, I am respectful to the service industry but this was absolutely appalling.
Breakfast - delicious food but not staffed well. Had a surge of people right when they opened and only 1 waitress. Had to wait 5 minutes to be sat. Concept of getting the table ready (water, menu, napkins and silverware) before you sit had the people in front of me waiting quite a while longer for their table as they were a large party. Maybe seat people before bringing all that? Dinner - caught the happy hour and got the Brussel sprouts and the noble garden chop salad from the regular menu, added shrimp. It was all very delicious! Lots of flavors! Could have used less sauce on the Brussel sprouts but that is my only complaint. Service was ok, I was without water for quite a long time until I flagged someone down. View - marina side, so tranquil. All in all, great food and feel to the place, but service needs to be improved. Can’t be shy flagging someone down to help you.
On the morning of Saturday, October 21, 2023, I had the pleasure of dining at this establishment for breakfast, and I was attended to by the ever-efficient Trigg. As always, his service was nothing short of exceptional, and I extend my sincere gratitude for his kindness and professionalism. This restaurant has consistently proven itself to be a paragon of impeccable service. The warm and welcoming demeanor of the staff truly fosters a sense of belonging, making every visitor feel as though they are in the comfort of their own home. With years of patronage under my belt, I can confidently say that I am a devoted regular, and I eagerly look forward to my next visit. However, management needs to pay attention to the food. I started my meal as customary with a pastry basket. Cinnamon Roll: The dough of the cinnamon roll had a sour taste and lacked the expected rich flavor. Blueberry Muffin: The sugar in the blueberry muffin seemed to have an artificial or synthetic taste, affecting the overall quality. Apple Danish: The apple filling in the Danish lacked flavor, leaving the pastry disappointing in terms of taste. Eggs Benedict: The hollandaise sauce for the Eggs Benedict had an off-putting flavor that didn't meet our expectations. I will return and keep posting reviews!
The atmosphere was really nice and the service was very attentive. The food was ill conceived and served without much thought. I'll probably come back if I'm invited by friends.
I went as a guest to celebrate a birthday. It was later in the evening on a Sunday, so it was just our party outside in the dark. Actually, it wasn't that bad with the sounds of the water and sea lions. I ordered the Cioppino (fish stew), and at first it agreed with me as someone who would have it regularly in Italy. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning from it. I woke up at 2AM and started vomiting big time. This happened again at about 4 and 6AM. I was a mess and had to miss work. But this is not the way you want a Monday off. I felt even worse because it was my first (and only, as you'll see) time dining at Baleen. Management was informed the next day and they were very rude and argumentative, saying it was impossible that I got sick because of their food. They said they'd look into it and get back, but they didn't. The manager on the phone basically said to go fly a kite. Not cool! The neighbors even heard me heaving. Gaslighting people is no way to build a business, neither is serving contaminated seafood. Seafood can be very dangerous and you have to be very careful. I would know this by experience as a restaurant owner. Clearly, I don't recommend this place.
I made a reservation several days ago for this Sunday for 3 at a table with chairs on the patio at 9:30 am. The new GM for Baleens had seated everyone at the tables with chairs. I told him I made reservations and he said he didn't have the reservation chart and we could set down on the patio at the picnic table it was the only one left. We'll the table was not clean it had bird pop and a spider web in the corner The food was just OK the fruit my husband ordered was not rip.
I have Never Ever posted a negative review but I was appalled at the lack of service at Baleen kitchen. We went there for dinner in the lounge. It was still light and overlooking the marina. Ordered drinks which were great! But, afterwards it went downhill. Our appetizers came an hour later and we were waiting almost 2 hours for our dinner which never came. Al the very least the “comped” our drinks and appetizers. Unimpressed, and dismayed. Portofino needs to step it up. Should have ordered room service.
I recently dined at Baleen Kitchen with a party of four, and I must say, it was one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had. To start, we ordered soup, but shockingly, the server only provided us with two spoons for our group. When we politely asked for more, it felt like we were asking for a rare treasure. It was frustrating and frankly unacceptable. The food itself was mediocre at best. I expected much better, especially since my sister had her wedding here two years ago and we were spoiled with great service back then. It seems like the quality has taken a nosedive since that time. The dishes lacked flavor and creativity, leaving us all feeling underwhelmed. But the worst part of the experience was the service. The server seemed disinterested and inattentive, making us feel like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. We felt ignored and neglected throughout our meal, which only added to the overall disappointment. I was really hoping for a pleasant evening, but I was sorely misled by my previous experience. I won't be returning, and I can't recommend this place to anyone looking for a quality dining experience. There are far better options out there. Save your time and money!
The food was good, and the gentleman at reception was genuinely nice. But we had one of the worst service experiences we’ve ever had because of a female server (with neck tattoo). She delayed our order for over an hour and spoke to us with obvious irritation the entire time. When my wife calmly mentioned that our order was taking a long time and asked whether there might have been a mistake, the server responded in a loud, angry tone insisting there was “no mistake.” Meanwhile, multiple tables who arrived after us were served before us, including some receiving the exact dishes we ordered. Good food does not make up for being treated with anger and disrespect. Completely unacceptable service.
