This was such a great breakfast! To quote Arnold, "I'll be back". It's worth the journey away from I-35! We visited on a Sunday morning. I'm not sure who's bells they were, but they belled out traditional hymns. I heard How Great Thou Art for sure. Loved it!
Very good food, service and the price was reasonable will definitely go back 👍
Chicken fried steak meal was great, best part was the chocolate pecan pie
We have ate here twice now this last year while visiting family. Absolutely delicious homestyle foods. The sweet tea was perfecto!! The pies are amazing! Service was great! It's the top place I will recommend to eat in the Hillsboro area!
I had the all-you-can-eat salad buffet and the wife had hamburger steak with a baked potatoe and a side salad. The food was great and we'd come back without hesitation. Jessica was our waitress and although she was very nice she consistently left us for long periods. At one point we got up and went searching for her for bread rolls which she finally delivered as we were getting up from the table. It was about 2 in the afternoon and not particularly busy.
You guys are amazing. The nice lady/manager that greets you. Best hospitality around. The service was beyond friendly and spot on. Our ticket was $24 bucks and you can see the portions in the picture. The chicken fried steak was crispy and your butter knife will cut right through, that's how tender it was. The green beans had a delicious flavor. The biscuits were thick and fluffy. Delicious ham, bacon, sausage. Hashbrowns..again for $10.99. We will drive the distance to eat here again, that's for sure. Oh and the chicken fried steak meal came with 3 sides and some banana pudding. What a deal! Walked around staring at ppls food and by the looks of everything I can't imagine anything on the menu being a bad choice. Keep up the good work!!
Excellent customer service from Jennifer, super delicious and fresh food. Smothered chicken breast, onion rings, and of course Dr Pepper. Definitely have to come back!!!
I was out on a day trip and specifically looking for someplace to eat that was not a big chain restaurant. This place is half a block north of the courthouse and totally filled the bill. It's beautiful inside and the food is good. They have a decent sized salad bar and several different dressings also. My server was super attentive and checked on me several times, and inquired if I wanted desert afterwards. Even the two ladies at the register were great. I definitely recommend this restaurant! They also have a small covered area set up outside with a fireplace but it was not in use the day I was there
Arecent new restaurant for us. On a short trip, we drove into Hillsboro. We stopped for an early dinner, and were delighted. The menu was varied, the service was great, and the food was very tasty. Will return if in that area again.
Trthis is a great place to eat, staff was very friendly and service was great. It's about a 30 min drive for us to go eat there but its a place worth it
Met a friend from Waco for lunch. Great Frito Pie and Pecan Chocolate Pie. Great venue in a former Interurban trolly stop.
We picked this place based on the reviews and we were not disappointed. My mom had the seafood platter: catfish, popcorn shrimp and stuffed crab with cole slaw and onion rings. I had the sirloin with mashed potatoes, green beans and mac & cheese. For dessert, we took home the lemon something & German chocolate pie. The food was so, so good! The service was great, from the person who greeted us, to our server, to the cashier. I highly recommend you give this place a try!
My husband and I ate breakfast here while we were in town running errands and visiting family. Prior to this, we had only been to R&K II after church on Sundays, when it's extremely busy. This time, it was much quieter. We both had omelets with hash browns. The food was cooked well, the coffee was fresh and hot, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The whole restaurant, including the restrooms and kitchen were quite clean. And I especially love the Hebrews 11:1 verse posted on one of the specials boards. Our waitress seemed like she wasn't in the best mood, but she warmed up to us a little toward the end. Everyone has rough days. But we will definitely return!
Randomly chose this place passing through and I was overwhelmingly pleased. They upgraded an older building, but kept all the character. There was no wait to be seated, and the lunch special was totally worth it! I will definitely eat here again.
Omg best breakfast ever.We road down to Hillsboro from Waco which is not far but I can honestly say it was good food all the at around . Waco does not have good breakfast like this . Waitress was great Atmosphere was awesome as soon as you walk in your welcomed with awesome staff . Everything is great here no problems at all . Highly recommended this spot to everyone.
This was an awesome find in Hillsboro! Food was great( we split chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans and rolls!) The brownies were delicious! All for $14.00 and the building is beautiful!
This was a really good out of the way spot. We detoured about 15 minutes for this gem. It was definitely worth the out of the way drive. The food was delicious. The taco salad was sooo good and the chocolate pie was just absolutely worth the guilt. Big ol glass of sweet tea and the waitress was absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend this place!
Such a pleasant surprise! We went through the old part of Hillsboro and ran across this diner. It was very clean and comfortable and the food was fabulous. We started with a trip to the salad bar. I could have filled up on that alone. Everything was fresh and while we dined there, it was regularly filled and kept clean. The chicken fried steak was the best we have had since Mary's Cafe in Strawn. The iced tea was freshly brewed and kept filled by our attentive server. The whole staff seemed like hard, efficient workers. Our only regret was not saving room for dessert. They have pies that are made fresh daily on display and they look amazing!
I liked this place and I also had a great meal in my opinion. It was my first time I ate there and maybe one day I'll come back to this place soon.
Loved the food and great atmosphere. Server was very friendly and fast
I’ve stopped at the R&K II two times and have never been disappointed! The wait staff are some of the friendliest people and always willing to go out of their way to help in any way they can. If you like country food, this is the perfect stop for you! I’ve always ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, green beans, and fried okra. The steak is a real steak not simply ground meat and is fried perfectly so you get a crispy crust over the steak. Likewise, the fried okra is crispy and tasty! The green beans are tender and well flavored with bacon and butter. On both occasions I’ve had some chocolate pie for dessert....both times totally worth the extra calories! The meringue is light, fluffy, and tasty while the chocolate is deep and rich. The crust is light and crispy as well. I love the R&K II and will stop by whenever I’m back through Hillsboro.
Great food. Great service. Such a friendly atmosphere all around. Loved it.
Delicious breakfast at a local cafe where a friendly voice yells across the room when you enter “ya’ll just sit wherever you like”. Traditional breakfast - yummy buttermilk pancakes served with a big blob of butter and syrup in a squeeze jar. Coffee is hot and topped off frequently by the friendly wait staff dressed in blue jeans and black R&K tee shirts. The parking lot full of dusty farm trucks was a sure sign that we would not be disappointed. Lunch menu too.
Big space for seating . Atmosphere was nice and cold very cozy. Food was very delicious worth trying .
I've driven through Hillsboro a thousand times and never have been off of I-35. But if you're looking for a small town country breakfast, taking the two mile detour into Hillsboro is 100% worth it. R&K Cafe II is awesome. Friendly staff, great small town prices, and filling, piping hot comfort food. We will be back!
Great little place to just sit, relax, and enjoy a great down home meal. I was traveling through and enjoy small town cafe's. Waitresses were extremely pleasant, service was great, and the food was excellent. I had the house special chicken fried steak with three sides (mashed potatoes with gravy, well seasoned green beans, and tasty cole slaw) with a roll for $10.99 not including tax or tip. Well worth the stop! Oh and the German chocolate pie was outstanding! Total for the meal was only $16.00. Great value.
It was delicious!!!! The service was excellent! We will definitely go back when we are in the area!!! Our favorites were the sirloin steak and the butter beans!!!❤️
Very tasty food and impeccable service. I’m glad I had the chance to try this restaurant out. I’ll be back when or if I’m ever back in this area. 👍🏽👍🏽
I live almost two hours away from this R&K but everytime we are in the area there is no doubt in my mind on where we are eating. Great food, service, and awesome atmosphere.
Old style rustic feel when you walk in! On a Friday at 5PM it was already filling up. We did the all you can eat fish this time and it was an excellent choice. I tried the grilled and fried. The grilled was cooked perfect but taste was average. The fried was excellent. The cornmeal they use has great flavor and it was fried just enough. Fries were average at best but they have a great little salad bar that has good options. This is not my 1st time to visit. I have had the CFS which is excellent as well and breakfast which is also great. Get off the interstate and visit this great little spot in Hillsboro!
This place is cute, cute, cute! The prices are fantastic and so is the food! The atmosphere is super cute! Would be a great place for dates, friends, and groups! The lighting was my favorite part. All the customers seemed to be the happiest people on earth as well. Lots of laughing and smiles all around. Definitely going to remember this place when traveling!
Historical building, beautiful atmosphere, friendly, country cooking. Biscuits are awesome, make sure you order one. There's a newspaper article and old photo by the checkout stand explaining the original use of the building and a little more about the town. This is a great place to stop on a road trip, visiting the area, or as a destination. There are nearby museums and other points of interest. Service was great, they were busy and still managed to keep everyone happy! Good value, large servings.
Stop here!!!! I'm lucky I'm a local and can come here as much as I want! My family loves this restaurant! This location is always so clean, food is really good, and the vibe is what you want. We have tried so many items and they have all been very good. The only negative I'd say is the rolls are inconsistent. Sometimes not that great and sometimes good. But hey you get so much food it doesn't phase me. PS- We can't wait for the pie box to come back!!!
I had hamburger steak with onion rings. Both were superb with the homemade onion rings being the best I've ever had. The pies looked really good...maybe next time. We're in the area three or four times a year and this is our "go to" restaurant.
Nice café with southern comfort foods. Catfish was tasty and good salad bar. Great hospitality and staff is very friendly.
Great place to eat downtown Historic Hillsboro. Simple, southern American food! Seat your self seating. My wife and I ate upstairs. We went up the stairs I didn’t see an elevator but my wife, 9 months pregnant, was able to get up and down easy enough. Food was good and hit the spot for the chicken fried steak. I enjoyed the coleslaw the best, it was really good and my wife liked their sweet tea. She got a to go cup on the way out. Servers, food runners, busboys made sure we had everything and were taken care of with refills, bread, etc. Customer service was good. You get your choice of 3 sides, I thought that was cool, more than the 1-2 sides you usually get and bread with butter comes with the meal. My wife and I both got the chicken fried steak. Our sides were mash potatoes and gravy, Coleslaw and Fried Okra. Simple and what I expected for American southern food.
Great little Cafe tucked away in the middle of downtown Hillsboro. Food was great waitstaff is very friendly. Reasonable prices.
We came here on a Sunday about 12:30. VERY busy. Everyone was pleasant and attentive while you wait for a table. Smiles everywhere. Once seated quick service with a smile. I had the lunch special of Roast beef. This came with 2 sides in addition to mashed potatoes, a roll and a trip to the salad bar. Ice tea and dessert included. As others have said tremendous value. The food was great, service great, atmosphere great, price great. Probably the best cafe I have been to and I travel a lot all over the South and Midwest. A real gem. Be sure to tip those hardworking folks good, they definitely earn it. I will be back :)
Great food. Great vibe. Great staff. If you stop in downtown Hillsboro, TX, this is the place to be!!! We enjoyed generous portions of mesquite grilled chicken breast, 3 sides and dinner rolls all for $9.99 !!! The salad bar and dessert is great, too! The chocolate pecan pie is delicious and the chocolate meringue pie is heavenly. This place is a gem and we're glad we stopped in!
It was my first time visiting R&K Café The food was really good. I read the service as a four because I dropped my fork and I asked the server for another four and she never came back with one so that’s why I got a 4 atm was good. I will return and I do recommend it.
This place is the kind of place that feeds the whole town and more. It looks busy on the outside but I imagine there’s never a wait. A class hospitality with great food and no wait. We are from Houston and don’t get a place like this often
R and K had some good food choices, I went with a Friday special, the catfish plate with three sides, and for a few extra bucks, it could have been all you can eat catfish. Green beans, O'brian potatoes, and I choose the salad bar for my third side. Yes, they have a salad bar! There was plenty of fish, and the serving size of the sides was generous. They serve some tarter sauce, and you can ask for lemon wedges. The salad bar is unlimited. In the upper right corner of my picture, you can see some of the coconut shrimp. I stole one, and it was perfect! All in all, 4 stars for R and K!
EXCELLENT!!! We had never been to Hillsboro, TX and stopped in at the R&K Cafe with a group of 10 business owners. Our server, Carrie did an outstanding job and was very friendly and organized...told us about the specials (delicious), and did a great job getting the right food to the right person. Several of us tried the Chicken Fried Steak (yummy!) which came with THREE delicious side dishes. Can't wait for a return visit!
Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram at SNDTRAVELS and EATWELLTRAVELOFTEN Nice cafe downtown Hillsboro Texas. Diane and I split a chicken fried steak, and it was very good. Tender and juicy. Our sides were green beans and fried okra. The green beans had wonderful seasoning, and the okra was fresh. I also had the salad bar, which was basic but good. To go, we picked up 2 pieces of pecan pie to eat at home. Very good! The ambiance was nice, and the service was friendly and thorough. Overall, highly recommended two thumbs-up 👍 👌
This is my second visit and must say so far the service is consistently great. Food tastes just as good as it looks. Even when the servers are busy they can always count on back up from their manager. Drinks stay filled and you really don’t leave this place hungry at all. Portions are huge and you’ll surely get your monies worth. Yadira (server) and Katie (GM) took real good care of me. I’ll be back when I’m in this area. Trust me when I say you will be pleased. Eat well!!
Service: wonderful Food: fantastic Cozy atmosphere, comfort food and salad bar. Great specials for lunch and dinner. We were on the road heading south and it’s not far off the path from 35. Right across the street from the Texas Through Time museum. Unlimited salad bar is an option! Enchiladas are served with rice and beans as well as chips and salsa before hand. The chicken fried steak was tender and the breading was perfectly crisp and golden. And the pies. The pies not only look wonderful, they taste just as good as they look. We settled for a slice to go, but if we could have taken a pie on the road it definitely would not have made it far before we could finish it. So glad we found this awesome little place. Can’t wait to visit again!
Saturday was my first time here. "Sit anywhere you want!" We sat down quick and our waitress appeared quickly. We started with the chicken fried steak bites, then a BLT and chicken fingers. It was all good.
I went out of my way to try this place and I wasn't disappointed. I don't know what was better the food or service! I had the grilled chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes...all delicious!
Glad we decided to check this place out! The food was tasty, portions were generous, and the prices were really reasonable. The hamburger steak was a highlight—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The pork chop was slightly dry, but still enjoyable, especially with the brown gravy, which might be one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Everything felt homey and satisfying, and the casual vibe made it an easy spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Definitely planning to come back soon to try more of their menu—especially because that gravy alone makes it worth a return visit!
We had ate at the one in Cleburne many years ago and just remembered it being ok but this restaurant is on a whole different level!! From the time we sat down to the time we left was probably 30 to 40 minutes... Our food came out so fast it was insane!! Fresh hot and AMAZING!! I'm very picky about chicken fried steak but it was delicious and my husband had the hamburger steak and he said it was perfect! The salad bar was good and kept clean...we were served a warm brownie with our lunch specials and our server was so nice and friendly!! This restaurant is what every town needs!! This is definitely what some people would call "A HIDDEN GEM"
My buddy had the chicken fried steak and I had the hamburger. The R&K burger with cheese and bacon was beyond 5 stars. Stacked high and very juicy, not greasy. The bun is obviously homemade. My buddy was truly impressed with the chicken fried steak. One of the better ones that he has had in the past. Definitely a place I would recommend and return to.
While traveling from DFW to Austin, we made a stop for fuel and discovered this restaurant through a Google search. Our dining experience was exceptional, with the food being truly outstanding. The service was impeccable, characterized by the cheerful demeanor of the staff who promptly greeted every guest upon entry. Their remarkable pies traveled without incident all the way back to Austin. We eagerly anticipate our return.
Absolutely a must visit. We drove about 15 minutes out of the way but it was well worth it! Ordered the taco salad and chocolate pie and it was perfect. The service was excellent. Large glasses of sweet tea and big ol slice of pie! Hats off to the cooks. If we pass through again we will definitely be back! I highly recommend this place!
The gentleman at the American Roadside Museum referred us to this restaurant for lunch (which also serves breakfast all day for an additional fee) and he gave us free drink beverage coupons so we went to check it out. The food was great! Lots to choose from with a kids menu and small salad bar available. The staff was efficient and friendly! I also loved the surprise that my entree came with banana cake after my meal! Thank you for serving my family!
Granddaughter gives this place a 10 out of ten. Large portions. Drinks are a little pricey. Had the chicken fried chicken. The breading was not greasy and the chicken was moist. Had three sides to add to the entree. At first sight the salad bar didn't look impressive, however it had everything I was looking for. Didn't try the pie/cake desserts, they did look great. Recommend stopping by to feed your appetite.
My Sunday lunch was a total win! Service was speedy and awesome. I got seated super fast after signing up on the list when entering the restaurant, and my waitress was so sweet, bringing my food in a flash. The price? Totally budget friendly for all the fixin’s and a chicken fried steak that left me completely stuffed (in the best way!). Breading was amazing! Stumbled upon this gem on my way from Dallas, and I’m so glad I did!
Lori A & Engracia were great! Food is very delicious, flavor was on point, small location with big soul! Truly enjoyed my meal today. The rolls were hot, buttery and had a crispy crust to them. The flavor of the Chicken Fried Chicken was very good. Juicy! I will be back again for sure tonight! Yummmmm
Stopped in to try this spot and glad we did! The food was good and prices were very fair. The hamburger steak was very good and the pork chop was a little dried out but still tasty. The brown gravy was also some of the best I have ever had. You get 3 sides with your main course, and all the sides were top notch. You can have the option of the salad bar for a side. They were serving many other things besides salad including macaroni salad and potato salad. Both of those were excellent. You can really taste the quality in all of the food. They also had pie but it wasn’t ready when we were there. Hopefully next time I will be able to try some.
as a former local.. i love their restaurant and their pies.. i would recommend it to my friends and family... it used to be the old train depot at one time i think, hillsboro has a lot of history ..

We loved this place and a great lunch special of ranch chicken with 2 sides. Salad bar was plentiful and delicious! Great service as well!
Great food ,atmosphere and staff. Very friendly and welcoming! Parking isn't so great but there is always extra parking in the back and the food is worth the few extra steps! Chicken fried steak is my favorite but I have had the ribeye steak and it was perfect. The pricing is a little pricey but you won't complain after you eat except to complain on how full you are!
Good food and service. Portions are generous. You'll have to get a slice of pie to go.
Nice cafe. Interesting decor. Decent burger & fries. Balcony seating inside had a slight odor along the back wall and an occasional drip from something air conditioner related. I’d suggest sitting in the main seating area downstairs.
Food was good but had to get up twice to refill my coffee cup myself. The girls walked by several times going to other tables but walked right by me. It's all good I am capable and don't hesitate to get my own coffee if necessary.
From the atmosphere I was expecting something different from what this is. It's upscale diner. And that's okay! Walking in, it was giving steakhouse but it's not a steakhouse so my mistake. I ordered a steak and requested medium rare. It was DONE. I also ordered the shrimp skewer. I was expecting maybe 4 good size pieces of shrimp. Instead it was about 10 pieces of super small popcorn shrimp, also overcooked. What I did love was the salad bar! My husband got the all you can eat catfish and that was solid. I'm not sure how they typically serve it but what he got were half filets so there was no bloodline like you get when the filets are intact. Again, they were a little on the done side but I personally like a super done and crispy catfish so I would have loved it this way! I think if you stick to diner staples and don't go too high end on the menu, like chicken fried steak, burgers, etc., this would be a solid option!
Good, friendly service and liked the cowboy/country decor. The place was "packed," so they're doing something right. The food had good flavor, but arrived at the table colder than we liked.
The food was great and the prices were quite reasonable. The restaurant was clean, comfortable and well run although our waitress was a tad distracted. We were really looking forward to trying one of the deserts posted in the reviews. Alas, all they had were chocolate chip cookies. We will be back.
We waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. Then I would have liked a refill on my drink but she never came back. I could understand if they were busy but the waitresses were hanging out alot behind the counter. We had to ask the bus boy for a to go box. Food tasted great tho and the place was beautiful. Just lacking in service. Watching two young waitresses being very attentive to their tables. We just didnt get that with ours.

We stopped in for supper as it had been awhile since we had been in. Service was good and food was pretty good, I had the special King a ranch chicken...won't order it again.
Cute little cafe a few miles off the highway. Good daily specials and lots of food. I had a fried chicken sandwich and it was huge! I really enjoyed the salad bar.

The second time around...excellent service, the food was great the first time. Chicken fried steak was excellent. Got together with some co-workers on a Friday evening and ordered all you can eat Cat Fish. The food was excellent, We were served in a timely manner. Great atmosphere conversation with co-workers was great. Waited for our waitress, kept waiting, and waiting no waitress. Asked another waitress... Twenty minutes later out waitress showed up, only to find out she had to leave. Well it would have been nice if we were told. So we paid for all you can eat Cat Fish Which was a waste cause we were not served all you can eat Cat fish.
The onion rings were so much onion that it was like eating a raw onion. They took them off the bill they were so bad.salad bar was fresh, potato was baked but tasted microwaved, green beans were awesome and the chicken fried steak was so so at best. Everyone told us to eat here so the experience was disappointing. I'll give them another chance but not anytime soon. The wait staff was on the ball and friendly.
meh. Let me start with the very good - decor and atmosphere are outstanding. The waitress was great to explain everything and clearly enjoyed her job. The restaurant is fun and VERY clean. It has a western theme and scriptures around which I appreciated. I wanted to LOVE the food based on other reviews and the waitresses recommendation. We had the chicken fried steak - part was tender, part tough, gravy good. I had the hamburger steak and found it bland. My favorite part was the salad bar. Neat place to stop on a road trip and I’d love to visit Hillsboro sometime as the downtown area - where the restaurant is located - is super cute.
Breakfast is better than lunch. Parking can be difficult during peak times and so can be the noise level. Service is great. Coffee- fresh (half n half, white sugar or sugar substitute) Sweet tea- tasted freshly made Ham Omelet & eggs-good Hashbrowns- crispy Biscuits- has odd "butter" yellow spots throughout, but they're good Grits- good Steaks- looked good, texture good, cooked the way I ordered it, can't really taste the mesquite though. Just a good grilled steak. Mashed potatoes on the thin side, comes with brown gravy on top automatically. Green beans- cooked with bits of ham, kind of mushy but good Corn- watery (but it's in its own bowl) Would go back for breakfast but not lunch. I think most people agree because it was packed for brunch with everyone ordering breakfast then it emptied out for lunch; this was on a Saturday from 11:30 to 1. Upstairs seating can be awkward and a tight fit.
I like the way it's set up. Nice atmosphere. We came in the back so we walked to the front to be seated. We just stood there. No sign saying to seat yourself, and the staff ignored us. The lady that I assume owns the place came out and spoke to the man at the next table and finally said that someone would be with us shortly. That's when we finally got service. The chicken fried steak was good in spite of being more breading than steak. The baked potato was okay but could have used about 10 more minutes in the oven. The pinto beans and corn were both bland. The rolls were hard.
We were driving through town and took a chance on the restaurant. The food was good and fairly priced.\nUnfortunately it took a ling time to get served but compliments to the server as she did apol…

R&K is a nice local cafe with an emphasis on speed. But my breakfast order was filled incorrectly and the eggs were cold. Other than that it was average, but the folks are friendly.
Came into eat at 7:15pm and they are already closing up the place, sweeping around you, server no where to be found and had to ask for another server to help us. You should treat your last customers and you would your first customers. When you close at 8 you are supposed to serve until then not half ass. I have had plenty of server experience myself and would not ever treat anyone the way we have been treated.
Took an hour to get our food. Once we got it I ordered Mac and cheese and it had green beans and French fries in it. Talk to the manager she said she would fix it. Never seen our waitress again. Horrible experience.
Dont get the porkchops with biscuits and gravy. The gravy taste like burnt flour and the porkchops like old grease.
