Easy 5-stars. One of the top-5 meals and dining experiences I’ve had since I moved to west Michigan in 2022. Our server Marianne was kind, funny and attentive and Butch himself came around at the end of the meal to ask about our experience - a level of attention I wouldn’t expect after around 30-years of successful operation. We shared the scallop appetizer with broccolini and cream sauce as a starter which was amazing, followed by chili whitefish which was cooked to perfection- crisp and perfectly complimented with a little bit of sweet chili sauce. We also had the sweet corn risotto with fresh mushrooms. The garden salad was perfectly fresh and lightly dressed. Later we finished with espressos and dark chocolate mousse for dessert which was also amazing. Their wine list was amazingly procured with extremely reasonable price-points for the quality of both wine/food and experience. I can’t recommend it enough and as a first-time visitor, can’t wait to return!
A really good restaurant. Great cocktails and wines during happy hour (4-6pm). Staff was great. I chatted with several locals and tourists during happy hour as I tried various wines and cocktails, and then got a table on the back patio with outdoor seating. Had the burger paired with a really nice Gamay. IMO the best place in town for a nice private dinner, or sitting inside at the bar. First time you go there it is a bit tricky finding the bathroom (but locals had funny stories about it).
I worked in Holland for 4 days a week from 2010 to 2016 and ate at Butch’s frequently during that time. We were in Holland over the weekend and decided to dine at Butch’s since it was one of our favorites. I had a Jungle Bird cocktail which was great. We were dining with another couple and we ordered two plates of scallops which were excellent. In the past, they used to have a scallops entree but now it is only available as an appetizer. I had the grilled hanger steak and my wife had the shrimp spaghetti, both were really good. I had the hanger steak years ago and it’s just as great as it was before. We were really happy that Butch’s remains a great place for dinner in Holland. The staff are still very friendly and all have pleasant personalities. I highly recommend this place if you are in Holland. Make a reservation a few days early or you may be waiting for a table. There is plenty of street parking available.
Our Meal was Superb! Our Steaks were cooked to perfection. EVERYTHING was Delicious from start to finish. The Cocktails and Wine absolutely delightful. The service was personable and attentive. Less than $100 for everyone to have awesome drinks and four courses for everyone. Highly Recommend!
We sat at the bar (tables were available but we wanted the bar). We had a nice bottle of wine ($60). We had the scallops ($18) as an app. For meals my husband had the chili walleye ($32) and I had the filet ($56). It was worth every penny! Jeanette was our bartender/server and she was wonderful! It was an excellent atmosphere. It's family friendly, casual but at the same time classy and fine dining. We will definitely be back!
Absolutely the best meals my husband and I have ever had. We shared the scallops and they were absolutely delicious. I had the shrimp spaghetti and it far exceeded anything I imagined. My husband and I love to cook and eat good food and this restaurant really gave it. Highly recommend. Multiple families with kids too and quite a few parking places. Waiting staff was wonderful as well. Excuse my dinner pic, I'd already eaten a portion. 😄
Butch's was wonderful! We had not been there in about 15 YEARS!! and it did not disappoint. Prices were pretty good. Food was good. I think the $20 per bottle corkage fee is about $10 per bottle to much though!!! Especially when with friends and ordering numerous bottles!!! But we had a lovely time. We would recommend.
Cool setting in downtown Holland, excellent service and a solid menu. I had the scallops and they were done very well, my wife had the filet and it was excellent! Lovely mushroom sauce with the filet. Great pacing with the service. My wife is pregnant, so we did not have drinks but it looks like they have a lovely wine selection.
Very good food, I had to take my wife there for her birthday. People may complain about pricing, it's not your every day restaurant either. Besides it was a special occasion. The sour dough bread for starters was amazing!
Wine tasting dinner: Wines from Castella de Alma in Italy. Excellent presentation of wine we were tasting accompanied by delicious cuisine to compliment each wine. Delightful guests and conversation at a banquet style table. Butch and his restaurant always exceed expectations!
Dinner was delicious and service was attentive, despite our dining during the extremely busy evening during the Tulip Festival. The chocolate torte was divine!
I haven't been here before and was in town for the day. Angela the bartender was phenomenal. The cocktails were delicious. The manager seemed to be filling in as expo and made it feel like everyone was well taken care of staff and customers alike. The menu wasn't my preference but that's preference.... Definitely recommend the cocktails
Food was amazing! Salad to dessert equivalent to fine dining experience of Chicago. Chocolate torte was the best I’ve ever had! Cocktails and wine selections were great too. Thanks to waitress #Sutton for adding to the evening. Will be returning!
The sourdough bread with maple salted butter was delicious. My filet mignon and mushroom risotto were divine. The chocolate torte was a great way to end the meal.
Excellent food, service, and atmosphere! Hanger steak was great and came out pre sliced. Which was perfect because the only complaint we had was that the steak knives are as dull as the butter knives. Thankfully, they weren't needed..
In a quaint, historic, yet upscale venue, Butch's Dry Dock is fine dining at it's best! The combination of wine expertise and meticulously crafted entrees is not to be over-looked. The fillet specifically was scrumptious! We loved that we were never rushed through our evening so we could truly enjoy every bite.
Delicious and a nice relaxed experience. Really enjoyed the scallop appetizer.
Attentive and knowledgeable server, great wine list, creative cuisine, tasty approachable food for every course from app to salad, main & dessert.
Excellent service as usualy. Sommeliers are very knowledgeable in their pairing suggestions as well. Cannot recommend the duck confirm poutine enough (though sometimes they can be a little light on the gravy)
Great atmosphere and our server was very attentive. She mixed and matched menu items to accommodate our special requests. My filet was melt in your mouth tender and the fish dishes of the other diners at the table got high praise. Convenient parking lot for the restaurant. Would definitely dine there again and highly recommend.
Great atmosphere and delicious. Chef Alexander takes great care in making his dishes absolutely fantastic
We had the Filet and Scallops w/gnocchi....was impeccable. Excellent service - Excellent atmosphere!!
A great upscale restaurant in Holland. Nice wine selection. Food is fantastic.
Butch's Dry Dock has been a favorite restaurant of mine for years, and they continue to raise the bar year over year. The food is reliably excellent, specials are always interesting, and their wine list is one of the best in the state. There are several dining areas, from casual pub style to white table cloth and full table settings, and the basement speak ez feels like a European cocktail lounge.
Marianne our server was amazing! Gave great suggestions and was very attentive. Food was delicious. We had the NY strip and it was cooked to perfection. We will be back!
We dined outdoors with another couple. The appetizer bread and butter is a must! We had 4 different entrees, all excellent. I had the hanger steak...highly recommend it! I ordered it medium, and it was perfect for my taste and as the server described it. Our server, Megan T, was knowledgeable, friendly and top-notch! Suggest reservation for outside dining.
Our food was excellent and perfectly prepared. Karrie took such good care of us and was a lovely server and an wonderful addition to our night. Matt, who I believe was the GM, was gracious. His attention to detail went above and beyond. Every fine dining establishment should have him on board. Lovely restaurant, lovely dinner, lovely evening. Thank you both for making it perfect. Mark & Catherine Carney
Thrilled Butch's is open more days a week right now. The nicest atmosphere in town. Everyone, including the woman who took our phone reservation, was helpful, friendly, and yet unobtrusive. The food--scallop appetizers, the roasted cauliflower entree, the mousse, the beer.....
A delicious dinner in downtown historic Holland. We did not have reservations, but we’re still seated promptly. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was wonderfully delicious. We started with the curried pumpkin soup, it had a wonderful flavor. It was delicious. I had salmon that was prepared perfectly. We also had the filet mignon, which was equally delicious. I would definitely eat here again the next time I’m in downtown Holland.
We went here for my birthday. It was a lovely place! But my partner and I had some feedback: 1. Old Fashioned: my partner ordered this. It was too strong. A lot of the sugar was sitting on the bottom and not mixed in. However the more he drank and swirled, it became more watered down and easier to drink. 2. Rib Eye Steak: 6/10 For the price, this missed the mark. The fat was not cooked enough and the meat was somewhat rubbery - may have been frozen. It needed more salt and pepper before cooking and I ended up rubbing the butter from our bread to help enhance the flavor. The house Demi did not do enough to make up for it unfortunately. Recommendation: Go to a steak house instead if you have a steak craving. 3. Sourdough Bread: it was really good! But salty (I know it says salt in the menu, but it was really salty). And it was not worth the price (you get like four pieces of bread for $10) Now on to the positives! 1. The Dark and Stormy cocktail was really good as well as the glass of wine we ordered. They have many to choose from. 2. The chicken I ordered was really good! Very juicy. I just wish it came with a side. 3. The service was very good. We were directed to our seats right away and our server was very friendly and attentive. 4. I love the tulip wine glasses! They are very cute! 5. Espresso: Tasted freshly ground. Good flavor and not too acidic. 6. Fall Gelato: Seasonal. Best thing on the menu! Fall notes: cinnamon, gingerbread. Not overly sweet. Bottom Line: Lovely place, worth a try. We would still come back, but will try different things!
My cocktail was to die for. They were accommodating with my kids and their allergies, making sure to confirm allergens with the kitchen so we could adjust orders respectively. The sourdough starter was shared between 4 of us (2 adults 2 kids) and was a favorite.
Very hit or miss. The restaurant itself was very nice, good ambiance, nice music. The seater was a sweetheart, the server was ok. The food was both good and bad. The crab dip was burnt on the edges and my scallops were raw but the burrata and beet salad was heavenly and Conor’s pork chop was perfection.
Upscale American restaurant with a great selection of wines and cocktails. The restaurant is super artistic with artwork decorating the hallway and around. The staff is friendly. The food are great, but options are kinda limited. You are looking at average 50-60 per person without drink.
Better than average eatery. Presentation is excellent! Hangar steak and filet were tasty. The portions are small. The service was good.
We visited this restaurant during the Tulip festival so as expected it was very busy after the parade. The atmosphere is rustic & staff accommodating. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. The mushroom Demi sauce was very delicious. The best ever. The burger was also delicious. Unfortunately, the only Distraction was the double bone pork chop. It looked really good on the outside, but when we cut into it, it was pretty much raw. We told the waitress and they comp us on it, but since we were in a hurry, we got it boxed for us as we requested. I’m still on the fence on rating this as a fine dining experience. Overall, it was a good experience & maybe they were overwhelmed during such a busy time.
Food was good but the steaks were smaller. Hanger steak was a better choice than the filet.
We had amazing cocktails here...perfect French 75. Very good bourbon & liquor selection. We had happy hour snacks - fries & blue crab dip. The fries were a little oily, maybe with the truffle oil, but the dipping sauce/aioli was good. The crab dip was overlooked or dry, definitely not creamy and spreadable. The bartender was very attentive and professional. Atmosphere/ambience is nice, but a downside is the men's restroom in a basement level of the building, not in the restaurant.
Food and wine were selection were excellent. Definitely a small plate place so don't expect tons of food for your money but the quality was exceptional. The wine was also amazing as well as the drinks. My biggest gripe with Butch's was the acoustics were way off. It was super loud in their and all the waiters are whispering so I can't hear anything. Once the family with a bunch of kids left it was way better but it was really noticeable until then.
Butch's was our most disappointing meal during our visit to Holland. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. We visited during covid-19 time and the dining room was socially distanced. The food however was fairly bland and nothing special. For what we paid, we expected more.
I wasn't overly impressed with the food I received. I ordered gnocchi and scallops. The portion size was very small. Only two scallops the size of quarters, and they were slightly overdone. It was bland unfortunately. The drinks were very good and had the right amount of alcohol. I understand the target customer but for the price of everything, I would have rather spent it at Ruth's Chris.
Really underwhelmed for a “fine dining” restaurant. The wine list did not have any high priced cabs and the best bottle on their shelves was a $75 Caymus. I had the fois gras for appetizer which was delicious, the duck was served med well instead of the standard med rare though the onion with nutmeg & clove were wonderful, and the crème brûlée was sweetened scrambled eggs- rubbery & horribly over-cooked. The server was attentive - not surprising given there were less than 8 tables seated in the restaurant. Mediocre at best. Very disappointing.
Went here tonight for a work dinner and there were only 6 of us. The appetizers came out first and the cauliflower was amazing. The service in-between the dishes took quite a bit of time. The salad came out and I had the garden salad and took one bite and talk about no flavor what so ever I could not even eat anymore. I next ordered the filet and asked for it prepared rare. When it arrived it had a decent presentation on the plate but when I went to cut into it I felt like I was trying to cut through a tree branch and did not want anymore of that either. If you can't cook a rare filet you don't deserve to even be in a kitchen. Last but not least the chocolate mousse was ordered to go so when I got home I thought I would try a little taste and save the rest for tomorrow. This was a total disappointed as well. It tasted like fake chocolate box mousse with heavy whipping cream and a fresh raspberry on top. Another disappointing restaurant for Holland that I would not return to or recommend to others especially for the price.
Second time eating here. First time I had a pasta special which was good and my husband ordered the filet medium rare. It arrived over cooked and tough. We ate there again this week and both tried the filet to give them a second change. Same as before ordered it medium rare but it was medium to well, dry and tough to cut with a steak knife.
The atmosphere was the only good part of my experience. Our group of 8 ordered a variety of foods and drinks. My scallop & gnocchi for $38 was inedible. No “local mushrooms, virtually raw dough gnocchi and only 2 small overcooked scallops. Those that ordered the risotto received undercooked rice without the creamy texture you would expect in a proper risotto. The beet & burrata salad was just odd with a big blob of cheese in the center. I could go on. If our waitress had spent time to return to our table to check how things were going, instead of hanging out at the pickup counter to flirt with one of the cooks I would have told her before everyone was finished. Overpriced for bad food.
I rarely write reviews but decided to today. I've been to Butch's multiple times and will say this will be my last. Waitress was very snotty especially when I asked to put us on the list for the speakeasy so we can go after our dinner. Instead, she put us on the list after we got our bill which was then, over an hour wait. She also put appetizers on my bill when ordered by somebody else at our table before I even arrived. I decided just to pay for it without causing a scene. I did write it on the receipt that I never ordered this. I would expect more from a high-end restaurant such as Butch's. I told my wife I'll never go there again, she agreed 2/21/26
I had a glass of riesling, the truffle cauliflower for a starter, and the hanger steak for my entree The wine and the cauliflower were good. Cauliflower came out promptly and had a lot of flavor. I ordered the streak medium rare, it came out overcooked. It also was missing the compound butter and horseradish. Service was slow overall. Would not recommend.
We have come here many times over the years, yet it seems the direction of the menu has changed. The amazing Fish Dip appetizer is no more, and for the Aspall Cider - which is one of the best (having spent ~2 years in the UK) also is no longer carried. Menu prices have gone up, while service has gone down. Having to wait 50 minutes for your meal while others that have come after you are being served is a bit disappointing as well. No offense atmosphere is awesome, and perhaps it would be a great place for drinks, yet the price for entrees belie the food quality. If the prices were as they were 2 years ago, sure fine, yet with the price increase, there is no increase in quality or refinement of the food.
We got our drinks and starters really quick but the servers took 20 minutes to take our entrees, I think they forgot about us. Not bad restaurants but think they can improve on some skills
First time visiting here, my girlfriend had a few glasses of wine, each glass was very much under poured, visibly comparable with other tables around. Server was not nice or friendly with us, seemed put out by each request. My steak was cooked well, but unseasoned, just charred. The garlic frites appetizer was frozen fries, and my girlfriend’s fish portion was minuscule, served over average fried rice. There is a lot of effort put into the ambiance which is notable, and the wine offerings are extensive and well-rounded. All my friends loved this place and recommended but I will not be returning.
Must've been forgotten by the waiters because we had to go get someone at the front desk to get our check and water. We are a younger couple and were casually dressed. Guess they didn't want a tip or expect one from us. Food wasn't even very good for it's price. Wouldn't recommend. Go somewhere that will respect your time and not profile customers.
