We had a great night here, everything was excellent. Service from Kaitlyn was top notch, food was incredible as was the wine. The fillet steak was probably the best steak I've ever had. What made it extra special was the fact that we actually got married in the same room 15 years ago. A great night, will definitely be back 😍
I will always miss 60 Hope Street in its original guise - but this pub reincarantion is top notch. Looks superb and the service is really strong - food was tasty too. The beers was good too - Lowenbrau & The Hair of the Dog were super refreshing. Haven’t tried the Tap Room but the Dining Room was spacious and welcoming. Got nicely busy at 1pm. Definitely will return.
We wanted a snack but had our dog with us, and we stumbled across this pub/restaurant. We were very pleased we did. Inside was decorated tastefully and had a nice atmosphere. There were two other levels, but we remained on the bar level. I happened to speak to the chef who mentioned the Roast Beef sandwich, which came topped with Salsa Verde. I was sold already. My wife chose Steak Frites, pink in the middle. We also got a sausage for our doggie. I enjoyed a West Coast IPA and my wife had a pint of lime and soda. Everything was spot on - the food, the service, the presentation. I wouldn't say it is the cheapest, but you get what you pay for and the experience was worth it. Delicious food, quality drinks and a chilled atmosphere.
I visited this pub on Christmas Eve with my partner and our dog while visiting family in the area. It had been recommended to us as an up-and-coming dining venue and, importantly, very dog-friendly. I’ll admit I wasn’t feeling particularly Christmassy. This was our first Christmas without my mum, who had recently passed away, and the festive spirit hadn’t quite found me yet. But even from the outside, it was clear the pub had gone all out for Christmas. Inside was no different - the attention to detail was immaculate. Combined with music that felt uncannily like it had been chosen just for me, the atmosphere slowly worked its magic and gently nudged me into the festive mood. We were shown to our table by Alex, an articulate and genuinely welcoming gentleman who became our host for the evening. He seated us at a lovely corner table beside a roaring fire, brought a blanket for our dog to settle on, and followed up with a jug of water. Each table was lit by a real candle too - not one of those artificial flickering imitations, but a proper living flame. Alex was so personable that it felt like we’d known him for years. He was relaxed, attentive, and clearly passionate about making sure we had a wonderful evening. I ordered the steak, while my better half chose the fish and chips. The vegetarian options were a little limited, but that was the only minor criticism in what turned out to be a truly memorable night. The steak arrived promptly - not suspiciously fast, but not slow enough to suggest they’d had to locate the cow first either. I cut off a small piece and offered it to our dog. It sliced effortlessly, wasn’t rubbery in the slightest, and was cooked to perfection. The next bite was mine - and wow. It melted in the mouth. Absolutely sublime. Our dog was not impressed that there would be no further sharing, but some things are simply too good to give away. Thankfully, my partner doesn’t eat meat - otherwise I might have been in trouble for refusing to let her try it. Now, my partner usually peels the batter off her fish and leaves it untouched. Not tonight. The gluten-free batter was light, crisp, and beautifully flavoured. It wasn’t greasy, heavy, or clinging to the fish like plaster to a wall - it was exactly how battered fish should be. Both fish and batter were devoured, which is the first time in three years I’ve seen her finish a battered fish in its entirety. After our mains, we both agreed we hadn’t tasted better versions of these dishes anywhere. Dessert was thoroughly enjoyed too, though our taste buds were still floating somewhere in heaven from the previous course. All in all, I couldn’t recommend this place more highly. Exceptional food, warm hospitality, and an atmosphere that delivered comfort when it was needed most. A truly special evening.
Stopped in for a quick pint and it was a really pleasant little pub. Nice and cosy inside with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind. Beer was decent, service was sound, and it wasn’t too loud. A good spot for a chilled pint and a chat; would happily pop back in again. 🍺
Myself, wife and 2 daughters visited the D&C for the first time for my wife's birthday. The decor and atmosphere was superb, whilst being tastefully decorated. The music just added to the ambience. Our server was fantastic, nothing was rushed, just chilled allowing us to enjoy conversation and the surroundings. .. The menu catered for all choices, but not being too busy. We had our drinks, then food was ordered. We went for the Fish & Chips and Steak & Ale pies. Wow! The food was delicious, portions great, tastefully presented. The Dog & Collar served up a fantastic start to my wife's birthday, professional staff, delightful food in a lovely building dating back to 1820.. We will definitely be back.
Called in for drinks just before Christmas. Amazing decorations, good beers, swift service from lovely staff, great atmosphere. Food menu looked interesting, a cut above the usual pub fare. Landlord is clearly working hard to make the place excellent. Definitely will visit again.
Booked a table in "The Taproom" 5:30pm on a Saturday. We were a little early and while waiting to declare ourselves lucky to snaffle a table in the cosy nook where the fire is situated. A very pleasant young man informed us at 5:20 that the table was required at 5:30...luckily it was for our booking. He took a drinks order and provided menus. My wife ordered the cheese and onion pie while I went for the fish and chips. The pie was delicious having a tangy cheese taste and including pearl onions. My fish and chips was also tasty with meaty fish and delicious pea side. Service was very friendly. The bar has a good choice of beers and though pricy this reflects a relaxed but quite sophisticated bar in a popular area of the city centre.
Well what can I say, great service, great food and very nice staff who accommodate for everything. Not from the area we booked a table a lot later than required we turned up an hour earlier and nothing was an issue to get us in sooner. Plus we have a big white polar bear of a dog, and nothing was an issue. Compliments to the chef, (as they never get a mention) and all the very friendly staff. Thank you and we'll be back soon now that our daughter is in Liverpool Unie.. Oh and the building is beautiful as are the surrounding areas and streets.
Very cozy and looks traditional. Nice staff. Delicious food. Cool music and atmosphere. Loved it!
Really enjoyed the visit on a busy Saturday evening. Hostess found us a decent place to sit. Several real ales to try out.
Great Sunday roast and exceptional cauliflower cheese. relaxed atmosphere felt at ease and well looked after
Great place, really nicely decorated for Christmas. Nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Would recommend a visit.
Came on a Friday night, we had the pork chop, scallops, bread and Moule’s frites all delicious in a gorgeous candlelit setting.
The bar was very busy, loud and congested but the dining room was totally different, very atmospheric. The food was lovely and I can recommend the jalapeños scotch egg and the mussels. We will definitely return and are looking to book for our next theatre trip.
Fabulous Christmas meal last night. Considering it was so busy, the service was excellent and the food was absolutely lovely. Great atmosphere and lovely decor. Would highly recommend!
Stopped for a drink on a pub crawl of central Liverpool with my partner and was instantly in love with the pub. I can't comment on food or restaurant service. Our bartender was amazing, he helped my partner decide on her drink by talking through what to expect from their different cocktails. We had a good laugh together at the bar- clearly the staff have a great sense of humour and are very relaxed. The interior was pleasant, with comfy seats and perfect music. Would visit again.
First time there tonight after recommendation wasn’t let down by the food or the service had lamb chops to start they were really good then fish and chips for mains then custard tart for dessert the staff were really friendly the food was excellent and reasonably priced I would go back again no problem
Had a fabulous early evening dinner at the Dog and Collar ..The food was excellent the friendly staff are exceptional. I would highly recommend this restaurant and Steven the Manager who went over and beyond to make sure our party was happy.. Thank you to all the staff for making my birthday special 🥂🥂🥂
Just been here for meal before theatre was an amazing place food was amazing staff where friendly , pleasant and very helpful special mention to Katie who was a lovely friendly lady nothing was to much trouble , well recommended and will be back , thank you xx
Had a great new year's eve meal. Food was good, Atmosphere was good. Table service good Only little thing that needs looking at is I had to ask 3 times for the bill. Missed my cab. Still I would go back again.
If my memory serves me right the last time I was in here it was the old 16 Hope St restaurant. They've now thoroughly refreshed the place and it's had a complete makeover and made it more of an open plan layout. The thing I liked was that it was quiet and you can have a conversation without music blaring away. They've built a new bar and put in pumps with a good selection of beers. They still do food and have a reasonable choice looking at the menu. Must come back to try out the food.
The large building is split into three options, the taproom, the tavern and the dining room. We chose the taproom. Initially I was not impressed, the drinks service was good and the selection large. But we waited a long time for the food which was a surprise as the place was empty just another couple having a lunch time drink. I chose the burger and my partner the fish and chips. They were an absolute joy to see and eat. Could not have been better, well worth the wait. It is a little bit pricey but without doubt worth it. The dining room, all white linen and roomy was open later for pre theatre meals, but we intend to go back on a Sunday for the Roast menu, such was are enjoyment of the food. Thanks to Jacob for the service of drinks!
Dog & collar We visited with friends on a Friday night the first impressions were great, the table was set out lovely with white table clothes, wine glasses & candles. Simple but elegant. We ordered a bottle of wine which was served at the table, we ordered the mushrooms & crumpets to start and the creamed leeks which my partner and I shared - both were great thoroughly enjoyed. For the main I had the burger, which was good but didn’t stand out as much as the rest of the food. My parter had the celeriac for main which I have to say was surprisingly our favourite dish - it was packed with flavour and I definitely had food envy after trying it. The servers during the visit were lovely, enough engaging chatter without being intrusive on our visit. All in all a good visit and I would recommend to anyone who is thinking about it
Gorgeous pub. Nicely lit by candlelight at the tables. Good selection of draft beers and gorgeous cocktails
The pub itself is beautiful, a historic building in the beautiful Georgian quarter. Food is always delicious, so we keep returning. However the service needs to be improved. The personnel seems to purposefully ignore clients, both upon arriving and when trying to order drinks, food, etc.
The pub has a warm, inviting atmosphere with a nice mix of traditional and contemporary décor, and the dining space feels comfortable and cosy. For food, I started with the scotch egg, which was tasty with a nice crisp outside and flavourful sausage around the soft-boiled egg. The chicken and tarragon pie was comforting and well-cooked, with a flaky pastry and tender chicken. For dessert, the egg custard tart was smooth and creamy definitely a highlight. The service, however, was quite slow. It took longer than expected for each course to arrive, which made the evening feel a bit drawn out. The staff were friendly and helpful when they were around, but the pacing of the meal was frustrating at times. Overall, The Dog & Collar offers good food and drinks in a pleasant atmosphere, but the slow service kept it from being a five-star experience. I’d recommend it, but be prepared to take your time.
Food was lovely, but the service was a disappointment. Came here for a meal with friends, and although food and atmosphere was fantastic, the waiting staff were not. Servers just looked like they wanted to be anywhere else but there - without even a smile from most. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive and not even an apology. Also, A glass broke right next to our table and not one of them came over to clean it up, leaving a hazard in the middle of the dining room. A member of our party had to get their attention to clean it up, even though the whole restaurant was aware as it made a loud noise. Overall, we had a lovely time, but just expected better service from an establishment like this.
Was so excited by this menu but it really didn't deliver unfortunately. The bread and bone marrow butter - the bread was lovely but the butter had no depth in taste. The jalapeno scotch egg was gorgeous. On to mains - I had the burger. It was missing some freshness on the burger, was pretty sickly and the onion jus it came with was pretty tasteless. The fries were lovely. The chicken supreme is pretty tragic - chicken was dry and came with 2 small potatoes and some average gem lettuce - just doesn't feel complete, especially for the price. The fish and chips were a generous portion but again really lacked flavour. The chenin blanc wine was a lovely choice for a house wine. Overall - pretty average experience, for the price of these meals, would hope for better portion sizes and more flavour in the food. Not somewhere I'd rush back to sadly
The bar staff were rude and ignorant. I requested a rose wine, got white and staff member told me they didn't have it so gave up despite it being on drinks menu. Afraid to say, a pervading smell of sweat also when gettg served and I'm sure it wasn't the customers
Arrived at 19.00 for our 19.15 booking. Reviewed the menue and ordered our food which took until 20.25 to arrive. Good quality food. Good atmosphere. Poor service.
Think we got unlucky with our visit… we arrived and our table wasn’t ready yet which was fine so we had a drink downstairs for fifteen minutes or so. We were sat on the end of the bank seating across from the stairs up and unfortunately this seemed to be a blind spot for the waiting staff. We had Sunday roasts (beef and chicken) no honey roasted carrots or creamed greens available so we didn’t order any sides but we had the bread with bone marrow which was lovely. We arrived 20 minutes before the table next to us however they were served their mains before us, had them cleared and paid before our plates had even been cleared. We were left without knives with our food infront of us and no offers of drink refills from the team. The food was nice, meat good quality but no carrot purée we had batons. I wouldn’t say it was worth more than what we paid for. The super slow/inattentive service also meant we skipped dessert (custard tart not available). The team are clearly new but from what I could tell no one was receiving the lack of service we were along the row from us so I think we just got unlucky with our placement. Nice place that’s been done out well but I’d probably only come back for drinks downstairs after tonight. If you’re booking Sunday roast I’d go earlier in the day(our booking was 6pm) to avoid all the missing options.
We went there for our staff Xmas night out on Saturday. We booked the basement room for our party, which was lovely. They had the footy on for us, the lad behind the bar was really good and the set up was really nice. The food came out and it was bang average. Only one meat was served, no broccoli, cauliflower or Yorkshire pudding. For the price, I would expect more choice and better quality. As our time slot was about to end, we were approached and asked to vacate as there was another party due in. We asked if the football was on upstairs and was told no. My gripe here is that they couldn’t get rid of us quickly enough from the room we had hired, yet there must have been at least 20 members of the public downstairs, whilst our party was ongoing, so why couldn’t we stay and watch the football. The food wasn’t great, the way we were treated left an even worse taste in the mouth. Overall, I’d spend your money elsewhere, this is far from worth it
We ordered the Beetroot, Blood Orange and Mixed Leaf salad. Really disappointed. Two very small (less than .5 cm cubes) pieces of beetroot, no blood orange- just a regular one (two tiny slivers) in a sea of mixed leaves. I must say given that Beetroot and Blood Orange were the leading ingredients we had expected that they would play a larger part in the salad. The roast dinner was ok- the potatoes were a little over done and hard to cut. The location was excellent on Hope St, but with so many other choices on Hope Street and Faulkner St, I am not sure we will go back to the Dog and Collar in a hurry. Toilets needed to be looked at as in the women’s upstairs one door does not lock and toilet paper strewn on the floor and on the toilet seat. I do hope that the pub management do consider this review and think about whether or not they are an inclusive place where people can choose from a range of foods. The dessert menu did not only exclude vegans but also anyone who had an egg, dairy or gluten allergy or intolerance. Eating out with an allergy or intolerance is not easy but having a vegan option means that those people can eat a dessert without feeling like they are getting special attention or being demanding.
We booked a table in the restaurant at Dog & Collar several weeks prior to our visit last Monday. On our arrival it was evident the restaurant was closed. We were offered a table in the pub and reluctantly accepted. We ordered Steak Frite which was awful, very tough. The server dealt with this well asking if we wanted an alternative but by this time our evening was ruined and we wanted to leave. The cost was removed from the bill. Such a shame a dreadful experience in the former 60 Hope Street which was one of our favorites and where we held our wedding reception.
We had really high hopes, the social media impression of this place gave off the idea that This was on par with a fine dining pub experience.however, unfortunately we were terribly disappointed. The venue and location is in an absolutely gorgeous area of Liverpool with multiple great restaurants. Upon entering there is a slight confusion with where one is supposed to go however there is a markedly homely feeling. Once discovering the adventure allocation of where you are supposed to be the welcome service was pleasant. We arrived at our table and was presented with two paper menus however one had to be taken back because it wasn’t presentable. We started our order with 6 oysters and a bottle of wine. We couldn’t fault the oysters as they were fresh and creamy, the bottle of wine was overpriced. We subsequently ordered our main which consisted of the tiger king prawns, the steak frites and the lamb shank pie (social media influence). Unfortunately this is where the downfall commenced, we ended up waiting over an hour and a half for our food to arrive, if only the horror ended there. The food arrived piping hot however the tiger king prawns tasted like a primary school erased with an overpowering butter mixed with a cheap oil combination. The steak friets was probably the worst experience out of the three dishes, the flank steak they used had a cheap vegetable oil aftertaste and the sauce given with it could only be described as bisto gravy with boiling water. The lamb shank was the one out of the three not because it was the best just because the other two were so poor. The puff pastry was paper thin the lamb was soft however floating in a brown unthickened gravy . The peas tasted extraordinarily similar to a frozen bag of peas from ASDA. This whole experience tainted what could have been so much better with small gastronomic tweaks. Overall this bill came to over £120 pounds and as you would assume Is money that won’t be spent here again. ~The Doctor & The Diva
Writing We had high expectations given the prices and reputation, but unfortunately the experience did not match the cost. We arrived early for our table, yet it was delayed by around 20 minutes. Once seated, it then took a full hour for our food to arrive, by which point it was approaching 9pm. The wine was lovely, and the waitresses were polite and clearly doing their best under pressure. However, most of the six main meals arrived cold and the flavour was average, which was extremely disappointing given the price point. It was obvious the pub was overstretched. We witnessed another table in a prolonged dispute with the manager who ultimately refused their food and left. We chose not to make a scene and ate, as it was already late. We only sent one dish back. Two were mostly left, along with many if the sides. When we tried to feed back our concerns at the end of the meal, the manager publicly questioned our integrity. She insisted the kitchen had checked the returned dish and that the temperature was fine, and implied our feedback wasn’t valid because most plates had been cleared. This response was both embarrassing and unacceptable. After such a long wait, it’s unreasonable to suggest customers would complain unnecessarily. Only the one uneaten dish was refunded. A goodwill gesture or partial reduction would have been the normal and fair response in these circumstances. Instead, the handling of the complaint was really poor. Sadly, I would not recommend this pub unless it is very quiet and properly staffed. The prices suggest a premium experience, but on this occasion, the service, food temperature, and management response fell well below that standard.
I wasn’t going to write a review until this morning, when I received an email saying the restaurant had marked us as a no-show!! We booked after hearing good things, and the place looks lovely and welcoming — plus it’s dog friendly, which was a big draw for us. We arrived at our booking time and waited around 15 minutes by the entrance before anyone acknowledged us and seated us. We were told menus would be brought over, but after a further 20 minutes with no return, my partner went to the bar just to order a drink. The bartender then sent someone over, who immediately asked what we wanted to eat — at which point we had to explain we still hadn’t been given menus. Around 20 minutes later we finally placed our food order. The food itself arrived quickly, but unfortunately it was fairly mediocre and we had to then wait with the food infront of us fotr 5 more minutes for cutlery. The woman who served us at this stage was genuinely lovely and helpful, but by then the overall experience had already fallen short. It was New Year’s Day, so I appreciate they may have been understaffed and I was willing to give some grace for that. However, receiving a no-show email afterward really rubbed salt in the wound (though not from the table shakers — they were all empty). Disappointing overall, especially given the good reputation and first impression.
The roast dinner was tasty, although the potatoes was rock hard and no fluffy inside. The main disappointment was the service it took 90 minutes for our roast to arrive then 45 minutes for the waitress to clear our plates and ask if we wanted dessert. By this point we just wanted to leave. The restaurant was not busy and the waitresses were occupied clearing empty tables than serving current guests
As part of a party of 18 we were asked to pre-order our food from the online menu. The pictute of the beef and ale pie looked delicious. Some of us ordered it. On the night it was different. It came with a 'decorative' large round piece of bone, the size of a small fist, in the middle. Which meant a lot less meat and a lot less pie. No such bone on the website photo. One glass of wine and a pint of bitter £18. Gulp.
Just had a lovely meal with friends at the Dog and Collar. Staff were great .Only issue was trying to walk up and down the stairs to gain access to and from the pub in the pouring rain when the Christmas decorations ( which are massive !) are wrapped around both handrails, was horrendous as someone who has limited mobility. A member of staff told me I could access the handrail as I was leaving but I could only hold onto the very tip of the spikes on the hand railings because you can hardly reach over the decorations to find the rail. And that’s with a walking stick. Access for those with mobility issues at this time of year doesn’t appear to have been thought through but style has, as it does look nice !
Absolutely terrible experience. We booked in advance yet still had to wait 1.5 hours for our food. The drinks were awful, they didn’t even have what was on the menu and what we got was far from acceptable. We only stayed because we were starving and had already ordered but we were so close to leaving. When the food finally arrived the portions were tiny, I had to eat somewhere else afterwards and I’m not even a big guy. On top of that, if there’s anything they can charge extra for, they’ll make sure to do it. The staff spent most of the time chatting in the corner instead of helping anyone and we even had to do part of their job ourselves just to get what we needed. To make it worse, it was so hot inside it was almost unbearable. Never coming back.
Food served cold, numerous times! Staff are friendly enough until you have to complain about standard of food. SO many more places around that are miles above this place. Spend your money there. Management can’t even be bothered to deal with a complaint.
Worst smelling ladies toilets I have every experienced, to be blunt: unemptied sanitary bins is the comment most women said. I would not eat here if that smell is acceptable to staff. And get some heating
Went for Sunday dinner at 6.30. No cauliflower left and only 2 out of 4 desserts left. There were 4 of us. We had a starter but after some time had to ask for the plates to be removed. The 2 chicken meals were served first with rock hard Yorkshire puddings. We asked that they be replaced. Then a pie arrived with chips that had been cooked about 5 times so they were left. The second Yorkshire puddings arrived with the 4th meal. Asked for the bill, still the plates weren’t taken away. Must have seen 6 different really nice staff who never spoke to us. Obviously all students. Nobody in the restaurant now except 2 tables full of dirty plates waiting to be taken downstairs to the kitchen. Could only give the food 3 stars too. Never again!!!
