You should know that the place is very beautiful, old, in a quiet area in the country, fresh air, mountain area reminds me of my country 🇦🇩. I haven't tried the menu yet, but I will come back soon to test the menu, I highly recommend it.

Was on my way home to London via country roads, ran out of petrol and came across this lovely place. It was quiet and extremely cosy inside, was a shame I had to leave. There were two ladies serving at the bar, didn’t get their names but to the blonde lady, thank you so much for being a lifesaver! Led me to a petrol station and went out of her way to give me the WiFi password and directions on her phone too. An angel in disguise 🥹 I would definitely come here for a drink or some food, seems very nice ☺️

We had our wedding reception at Nags Head this July and we were so impressed how the day run so smoothly. We had a buffet for the main meal plus burgers for the evening snack and the food was divine, everything was so fresh and well done and beautifully displayed. The TiPi and the garden is so charming which made our Boho style wedding come to life! We liked it so much in there that we went back on our 1 month anniversary for a celebration drink. I would highly recommend this place for weddings, birthdays and any other events. Thank you so much to the whole team for making our day so memorable.

Only went for lunch but was very nice. Me and my partner got fish the haddock and catch of the day, was great good portions. Decor was sweet too.

We arrived early and was greeted by a most efficient receptionist who told us about the area and the walks. At dinner we were looked after by the wonderful Chole and my partner was introduced to Jack the chef. The food was amazing we had the Stilton and mushroom soup. Now I've just come back from a 6 month around the world trip and I can tell you this was the most delicious soup I have ever and the pleasure of consuming. Aesthetically pleasing, nice and hot, wonderful consistency and a taste to die for. Although not a vegan we had the vegan choice which was equally pleasing. Well-done Chole Jack and team. Best regards Sandra and Steve

Despite living in the area for a long time and never visited the pub we booked an early evening dinner and it was great Staff were a credit and very friendly and attentive 10/10 Food was great we all had the Fish and Chips again 10/10 The menu was not extensive but that good Perhaps could have at least two vegi options but that is the only slightly negative thing Otherwise full recommend and we will return

Spent 3 great days at the Nags Head revisiting Holmer Green and the area after 63 years away. The staff were very welcoming and the room was fantastic, with a great selection for breakfast included in the price. Jo and Jess were particularly helpful as were all the staff. We would love to come back next year! Highly recommended accommodation, food and ambience.

Spent two nights here with work. Nice room, especially for the price, with interesting features and a comfy bed. As a pub, also excellent. Nice, country-pub feel inside and bar - very cosy. Garden was lovely, with outdoor tee-pee area and also traditional garden area with sun shades. 2 well-kept ales on tap and food (dinner and breakfast) was both delicious and reasonably priced for the region. Finally, staff were all really friendly and helpful throughout; just a pleasant place to stay all around. Will definitely look to stay here again if needing accommodation in the area.

Liam and his team were perfect hosts and really supported my family and I with arranging the run up to the passing out parade of our son at RAF Halton.

Nice pub atmosphere and lovely food. However, remote location means you have to drive or long taxi drive.

Excellent choice for a Sunday roast. The food is really good and I would say this place is also good value for money given the quality. We also liked the atmosphere here - busy but not loud. Just a nice, lively inn for a yummy Sunday roast

Came here for lunch with friends and my baby after visiting a local museum. A charming pub - warm, cosy with lots of original features. Great, well priced food and lovely service. Can’t wait to visit again

Such a great dinner, the food was delicious and fresh. The service was fantastic and very friendly. This is a proper country pub with an open fire place and an amazing tipi in the grounds.

We had a fantastic meal here. The food was great but what really made the evening amazing was the service provided by Jamie. She was really friendly, happy and made us all feel welcome. Thank you!

Lovely meal, quiet for a Saturday evening but food was great and cocktail drink selection was a nice surprise too!

Late Sunday roast dinner. 6pm booking, very quiet, but guessing we missed the main Sunday roast dinner rush ahd it was a particularly wet and miserable evening. Not been here for a while, but the food never disappoints. I had squid followed by roast beef. Generous portions. Fabulous pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese sides...delicious. We will be back.

Had a lovely meal in the tipi for my partner's birthday tonight, the food was delicious and the service was very friendly. Only downside was the cheeseboard: we had ordered it for the baron Bigod cheese but there wasn't any on it when it arrived 😔 but it didn't put a damper on a lovely evening overall!

This is a small traditional English pub, beautifully decorated serving drinks and food. Food is of excellent quality, small but well-thought menu, served with a smile. Service is very attentive and prices are reasonable. Would definitely recommend it.

We were looking for a pub to go to after a fireworks display and found the Nags head. There were 9 of us and they were really accommodating as some of us wanted food and their kitchen was shutting. The food was great, the service fantastic and they even gave the birthday boy some ice cream and a candle, plus another to share. It was so kind as we'd not booked and had not all eaten. We had a great evening.

Had a few bumps over the last couple of years but I’ve always enjoyed visiting for a beer or meal. However in the last few weeks, my wife and I have been there for a few meals and found the food and service is now terrific again. As locals we love having the Nags Head deliver a quality evening - good value too! cheers!

We held a 90th birthday party and had 65 guests. The event went without a hitch, the manager Melissa and her team went the extra mile and ensured the experience was perfect. The advice on catering was amazing and saved us cost and waste, the hot buffet was enjoyed by everyone, it was delicious. Our gluten allergies were catered for, they even allowed us to bring some of our own wines adding only a small corkage charge. Its a first class great gastro pub and Inn with a brilliant staff, I would not hesitate to book for any type of event. Thank you Melissa and your team for making our day special.

We were visiting our daughter for Christmas and stayed overnight on 23rd December. We were greeted by lovely staff whomade sure we knew codes to get up to our room later. The room was very comfortable. Very clean. This morning Helen greeted us at breakfast time and made time to chat with us and make sure we had a lovely breakfast. She ensured that we had an all we wanted. A lovely start to the day. We will certainly stay again.

This was our first visit to the Nags Head and we were really impressed. The restaurant was lovely and the staff were friendly and welcoming. We all ordered one of the Sunday roasts and everyone in our party thought their meal was one of the best roasts they had had in a while. The desserts were also worth a mention. This will definitely be one of many visits here I am sure!

Stayed for a couple of nights recently, over a weekend so was expecting a bit of noise from the bar. The most noise was after the place closed for the night and staff cleared up. The conversation and laughter was that loud I could recite it word for word (guess my room was right over the bar area) and didn't want to turn the TV up too loud and disturb other rooms. Around 23:30 it stopped as they went home. Food in the restaurant was nice, but not much choice on the menu. Portion sizes were quite small so wished I had had a starter. Breakfast was good overall, I assume 2 different breakfast cooks over the weekend as both days the full English was completely different in taste. Still good though. Room was quirky, doorway said mind your head. My shoulders we higher than the top of the door so i had to almost crawl though it. Floors were wonky, walked uphill to the window and downhill to the bathroom. It was cool, got to love an old building. All in all, a pretty good stay.

Very few pubs have a lovely garden, but the Nags Head does. Service was quick. Despite being quiet, there were left over cigarettes and drinks on our table in the garden - although this only really bothered me because I had my daughter with me. Menu said £34 for steak...

Splendid Sunday lunch, very friendly and attentive staff. The yorkshire puddings were a bit crisper than usual. Still had a lovely time. :)

Great food but the service was very slow. It was a Sunday but they weren't too busy. We were in the tee pee which was beautiful and plenty warm enough. The staff were super friendly.

A frustrating review to write. The place is lovely, the rooms are really spacious and well equipped, loads of period character, the bed was really comfy and the welcome was really nice by the staff too. The breakfast was superb in the morning! Unfortunately the room we were in was very dusty, the bathroom wasn't all that clean with water marks all over and a heavily stained toilet, the coffee machine was dirty and needed a cleaning cycle running on it, and there was a lot of glass fronted furniture in the room that was cracked or smashed. It's a shame to drop a star as with improved housekeeping it would have been 5 stars and an excellent experience.

Very nice in summer, limited beer selection and haven't tried food but all good. Nice boozer

Sunday lunch was plentiful and delicious. The roast beef wasn’t particularly pink as described but it was very tasty. We finished off lunch with a liquer coffee and that was a little under powered and very weak on the coffee front - however I asked for extra espresso shots and the server accommodated the request. Your recipe for those needs improvement. Overall a very pleasant lunch with good service.

Really lovely food, great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Can’t fault it!

S

They seemed to be short staffed today (Sunday 30th Nov) as it took over an hour from when we arrived to seeing any food. And I had to ask for service to even place an order. When we did get service all the staff were friendly and professional so having been before and not had this experience they must just be short on staff. Food was good. Sadly though these things count for a family so we’ll go back to our local rather than risk this again.

Stayed here overnight recently for a wedding. Rooms were very expensive, cracks in the walls and ceiling, and noisy with a fan running all night below (kitchen?). Not worth the weekend price (nearly twice the nearby Missenden Abbey). Breakfast OK but very limited Vegan options which is strange in this day and age. In all an average experience for an above average price and wouldn't stay again.

A
Andrew G Smith

Had a Sunday roast few weeks back in the tipee. Unfortunately it was more like Monday roast as the food took so long to arrive. When it did arrive it was very nice. Possibly an off day..

Lovely country pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Even taking into account that its a15th century building the rooms are tired and need some TLC The b drops curtains weren’t clean and the bedspread and furniture was marked. The linen itself was clean. Light bulbs missing or broken in the bathroom. The staff were very pleasant and professional and worked very hard. However the kitchen needs to get its act together. Changing a pre-selected menu for a large group 24 hours before arriving was irritating , not having substantial main menu items for dinner, followed by similar issues at breakfast.

This place used to be amazing for food a few years ago but I've visited twice recently and both times disappointed. The staff are doing their best, the quality has just gone downhill and the food is now very average. My last visit I ordered a steak and horseradish sandwich which came with no horseradish. When I asked for some, I was eventually brought garlic mayo, sums it up really. It's still cosy and lovely for a drink but go elsewhere for food.

L
Louise

We enjoyed lovely food last saturday but the 2 female waiting staff were less than friendly (the young male waiting staff was really good). I had told the pub on 2 occasions prior to the evening that it was a very special occasion, my husbands 60th birthday. There was absolutely no recognition of this which I was disappointed in. I'm not sure we wil return which is a shame as we've just moved to the area.

We were very disappointed with the Nags Head Sunday roast dinner today. The trio of roast (as advertised on the website) hasn’t been offered in over a year and the pork wasn’t available at 3pm for our booking. The staff were friendly enough but a warm (at best) and small portion roast dinner was underwhelming to say the least… On a positive note, our boys ordered something different and enjoyed their meals and desserts. :(

Having dined at the Nags Head several times over the past few years we decided to celebrate an anniversary there as it had always been nice before. We were disappointed. We were shown to a table next to another which had cutlery trays. paperwork and sweet wrappers on it and seemed to be being used as a work station for the staff. We assumed that this would be cleared as the restaurant filled. It was not. We ordered a bottle of champagne and this was delivered on a tray with 2 glasses. I asked for an ice bucket as is usual. It returned in a wine cooler with some ice in the bottom which did not chill the bottle. Before booking we checked the menu online, only to find that it was different when we arrived. This left my wife who is vegetarian limited choices. I ordered steak which came with fries and asked that they be swapped for triple cooked chips. The waitress said that it came with those anyway. When my steak arrived it had fries with it so I told the waitress and she said they'd run out of triple cooked chips. Having expressed my disappointment she then took away my steak and brought it back several minutes later with triple cooked chips !! The staff were all very pleasant but were clearly not well trained and looked a little lost at times. The quality overall of the food was far below our expectation having very much enjoyed meals there in the past. It saddens me to write this review but honest feedback must be valuable to the owners in order to gauge the quality of their offering.

We held our wedding reception in the beautiful tipi at the Nag's Head and despite several meetings with a member of staff there, our wishes were not carried out, the food was not up to scratch and the DJ equipment failed to work. We were extremely disappointed. Such a shame as the potential is there.

Unfortunately not a great experience.Booked the Tipi for a special event and we were very dissapointed. Choose the pub for its lovely location and wanting to support local buisnesses. We viewed the Tipi in advance and were impressed however what was presented the night we viewed was not our experience. We were told the sides would be down, fire on, that we could have music in the Tipi and orders would be taken in the Tipi at the small bar/till to help with speed of service.(October booking so you would expect chilly evenings). We had no fire and were not warned or told in advance so guests came in party clothes with no warm option. It was so cold we were offered blankets and hot water bottles. It was quite upsetting as i had pregnant guests too! Despite playlist being provided in advance there was no music for the first 30-40 minutes. The till/order area was not in use and therefore all orders where taken with staff in and out to the main bar and in the end guests went in themselves. I politely emailed the venue 7 days ago to report my concerns and have had no response, not even an email back to show receipt of the email although this does seem to be a reoccuring pattern of slow responses.Really poor service in general.I would not recommend booking for an event. (The one thing I would add is that the good was really nice. All 3 courses where very tasty so the kitchen team do a good job!)

I have enjoyed previous visits to this place over the years, but my visit today for lunch was far from impressive. On arrival, we were shown to our table for 2....which was a disappointment. The size was only just big enough with hardly room for your elbows. The location was right by the route to the kitchen, so there was mega patrolling by the staff. More importantly, the food was un-appetising, the beef very stringy and the vegetables almost non existant. The carpet by the entrance to the bar was revolting to look at and clearly needed replacing. All in all, a disappointing experience compared to previous visits and needs overall improvement.

My husband and I visited The Nags Head tonight, NYE. My husband enjoyed his burger but im afraid the Duck was less than average. The dish had a very unpleasant twang which has left me feeling quite sick. The portions were stingy for the price. It was freezing cold in the pub and when I complained about the uncomfortable temperature, I was told the log burner wasn't working. THE COLDEST NIGHT EVER!!!! We will not be going back 🤑 The worst meal I have had in a very long time 😔

The stars that I’m rating this for a purely for the food. We went last night for dinner and it was particularly busy less than half full and the service really let us down. We were away for nearly 20 mins before being offered drinks. I asked what drafts were available on tap and I was given a “I don’t know” pretty quickly. We waited a long time to actually order food as 4 staff members were stood behind the bar chatting. When food did come It was great however after waiting 45 mins between starters and mains I asked where the mains were. 10 mins later the food came out piping hot which means they just forgot to make it and had to whip it up quickly. We asked to see the desert menu which they brought over but after no one coming to ask what we wanted for nearly another 20 mins we decided to pass on desert not knowing if we would ever get it. It’s a real shame as the food was really good and the location is great but the service really let it down. Not sure I’ll be returning soon

As a busy working mum, who cooks everyday, I was really looking forward to a Sunday lunch at the Nags and when I booked this morning, I was surprised to see there was a table available at short notice. Unfortunately when we got to the pub, the table was in the Tipi outside. This was not mentioned at the time of the booking, and if it had, I would not have booked the table. There is a fire in the Tipi but in 3degrees outside temperature, does little to heat the 'tent'. Tables were not set and the atmosphere was that of sitting in an outhouse. We had a very nice server, the food unfortunately was not hot, and cooled down very quickly given the temperature in the tent. We ate quickly because of the cold, did not order starters or deserts because we were not comfortable. Its a shame because the food is very good but a dining experience is more than just the food - especially for a mum who cooks for everyone else all week and just wants something nice to eat that she didn't have to make herself. Also my 3 children ages 10 and 12 were still hungry after their children's fish and chips and roast. in future, rather than booking on line, I will call to make sure we are inside and not stuck int he tent.

Had lunch here with my husband and six year old son. Arrived at midday when it opens and we were told that if we want to order from the BBQ menu we order outside and if we want to order from the regular menu, we can order at the bar. We found some seating outside, but there was no one to take our order. So after about ten minutes, I went inside to ask where we can order and I was then told that I had to order inside. The food took over half an hour to arrive and the quality of the food was very disappointing. The mac and cheese was very dry and the beef mountain burger tasted like pork and very processed. My son asked for ketchup for his chips and it never came, so we had to approach a member of staff to ask again. For a pub that is also a hotel, the service is extremely poor. The pub itself is very pretty but we will not be visiting again.

K
Kirsteen Richardson

Can’t recommend this hotel. We stayed and the bar staff forgot to turn the music off so we had loud music in our room all night. In the morning went down to make a complaint and the couple in front of us was already making a complaint and got a 20% discount and so I asked if that would also be applied to us as we also couldn’t sleep and the lady at the bar said no, it only applied to them as their room was also really dirty! Amazing! Goodbye!

S
Simon Halls

An awful experience for Sunday lunch - despite pre-ordering our food it took 1 hr 40 mins to arrive and when it did, the food for our 3 year old had been forgotten. We weren't offered any drinks in the meantime and despite asking three staff how long the wait would be - we had to go inside to the kitchen to finally get an answer. When the food came it was fine for some of our group but pretty unpleasant for others. The room was cold and the door was repeatedly left open by staff. And to top it off, the manager hid in the kitchen and let his junior staff take all the complaints and do all the apologising (and in fairness, the young staff were doing their best) - subsequent emails asking the manager for any explanation as to why it was such a mess have also gone unanswered, so I'd suggest avoiding unless you are absolutely desperate.

Booked for a Sunday lunch to celebrate a 60th Birthday. We were seated at a table in the corner and forgotten about!! The service was shocking to the point we had to track a member of staff three times just to take our order. It took two hours to receive our food as quite clearly they had forgotten about us. This was evident by the fact members of staff were sat eating their cooked lunch! We again had to chase up our order. When we finally received our food, after 4pm!, it was inedible. Raw meat and undercooked potatoes. When we complained they did remove the price of the meal off the bill. Given it wasn’t even cooked they most definitely should have. This was quite possibly the WORST place I’ve ever eaten. I wrote to the head office to complain and to date I’ve received no reply. So that shows how much this establishment cares about customer service. I would recommend you avoid at all costs and take your money elsewhere where you’ll get served, hopefully in a timely manner and with edible food. Sadly this ruined our 60th Birthday!
