This was like a hidden gem inside borough market. Beautiful decor and equally beautiful cuisine. We had a private room so it was easy to chat; however, when the door opened it was quite loud out in the dining area. The service was top notch, prompt, clean, attention to detail - I couldn't ask for anything more. We started with some Scotch eggs and scallops, both of which were fantastic. Our entire table of 10 ordered the wellington and it came out looking and tasting amazing. Needed a pinch of salt, but that could be my American palette shining through. Fantastic sides with carrots, spinach, mushrooms and cheesy cauliflower. The drinks were great as well. I ordered the Big Ben and it was a hit at the table.
We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch at Roast. We had the beef and lamb, both of which were very good and the meat was tender. The roast potatoes were deliciously crispy and we really enjoyed the mixed vegetables too. The freshly made mint sauce with the lamb was an excellent addition. All in all, a very good roast. The restaurant is light and airy and the view is over Borough market. The entrance way is a little over the top, in my opinion, with all the floral instagram style decorations, but the inside of the restaurant is less so. The formal dining area is quite nice. Riccardo, our waiter, was charismatic and friendly making the experience even nicer. We look forward to going back.
I went for breakfast here with a client. Fantastic place to take them, the festive decorations looked almost as good as the view over the busy borough market from above (great for people watchers). I has the Eggs Benedict (which comes with ham hock) and a flat white. It was one of the best Eggs Benedict’s I’ve ever had
What a wonderful place in an even more wonderful setting. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we received first class service, nothing was too much trouble. The scallops and halibut dishes were both a taste sensation, I could not fault anything. Paired with a beautiful Albariño, this is what dining is all about. Not an everyday place and the price is reflected in that, but sure is a place to come if you want to be wowed or want to wow someone special.
Roast looked fun and festive with bright Christmas decorations. We were greeted with a warm welcome by the front of house staff/hostess. Our waitress, TIA, was friendly, polite and attentive, giving us time to make our choices. The prawn starter and full on Christmas lunch were DELICIOUS! The Prosecco was tasty too.
We had the afternoon tea at Roast, as a celebration for my sister's hen do. There were a lot of teas to choose from and all the ones we tried were great. The food was amazing. I had the vegan afternoon tea, and didn't feel like I was missing out or being given a poor substitute of the main thing. The warm food, sandwiches and cakes were delightful and very filling. We ended up taking the scones home because we were so full. The staff kindly supplied boxes for us to do so. The decor in the restaurant is beautiful and makes it a really special place for an occasion.
Great atmosphere. I didn’t try the cocktails but my companions loved theirs. The scallop starter was divine and my scotch egg was perfectly executed. My companions were happy with the generous portioning of their fish main and Beef Wellington, although the one with the roast pork had a small battle on her hands as the rind was more tough than crisp. Wonderful service and views.
We went for Sunday Roast, the Sunday after Christmas. It was busy but we had reservations for two. Came early and they were able to seat us. There was a beautiful hostess who checked our coats, checked our bags (we had just shopped at Fortnum & Mason and at Borough Market) and seated us before our reservation time. Our food was beautifully presented, fantastic, and delicious! We had the sea bass and the chicken Sunday Roast with all the trimmings. Please visit for Sunday Roast, breakfast, lunch, or dinner you will thoroughly enjoy the experience!
Roast delivers a refined take on traditional British cuisine, set above the lively buzz of Borough Market. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere feels warm and sophisticated, with large windows overlooking the market stalls below. The menu focuses on classic British ingredients done exceptionally well, with perfectly cooked meats, crisp seasonal vegetables, and rich, comforting flavours that feel both nostalgic and elevated. The signature roasts are the real highlight—tender, generously portioned, and complemented by beautifully made gravies and Yorkshire puddings. Service is attentive without being intrusive, creating an experience that feels relaxed yet polished. Whether you’re visiting for a Sunday roast, a celebratory meal, or simply want to enjoy British cooking at its best, Roast offers consistency, quality, and a touch of indulgence. It’s a place that captures the charm of London dining while celebrating the best of British tradition.
I have been to Roast several times for afternoon tea and have always loved my experience. Staff is so kind and always makes the experience special. The food is excellent and beautiful, the teas are lovely, and the atmosphere is unmatched. It's a great way to enjoy borough market without the chaos the the crowds and cues. I always bring family and friends who visit London to Roast for an afternoon tea experience.
We visited Roast in Borough Market for their special Halloween Afternoon Tea, and it was such a lovely experience! The atmosphere was elegant but warm, with great views over the market and just the right seasonal touch in the décor — festive without being over the top. The Halloween theme was really well thought out — from the spooky little pastries to the creative presentation. Everything looked beautiful and tasted even better. The sandwiches were fresh and perfectly balanced, and the black, spooky scones came out warm with plenty of clotted cream and jam. The themed desserts were both fun and delicious — especially the chocolate spider and pumpkin tart! Service was friendly, always with a smile, polite and attentive without being intrusive, and the whole experience felt special and relaxed. It’s a great twist on a classic afternoon tea, and perfect for the season. Would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something festive and quintessentially London in the heart of Borough Market. 👻🎃☕
If you are looking for an incredible dinner, a great atmosphere, amazing decorations to get you into the Xmas feeling... Look no further! Hubby and I had a lovely dinner. Service was great all night. Views were amazing, food was incredible, the roast turkey with all of the trimmings was superb and to be honest, it will be so hard to make a better one at Xmas. I also had a Xmas cocktail called Santa's present and received a "little" gift from Santa (and Roast) that my main course was on the house, which was such a lovely surprise and left us speechless :) overall expensive as you expect from a top quality restaurant in an amazing location, but top quality, so I feel I can only recommend it. Thank you so much for making our evening so special. Xmas decorations are incredible!
A fabulous traditional Sunday roast every day of the week, and the best one I have ever had, with perfect Yorkshire puddings, and tender slices of beef. There are enough other dishes to give a range of options, traditional and innovative. The puddings are to die for too, including sticky toffee pudding and Eton mess. Exceptional, friendly, professional, attentive service. A beautiful room with a grand, historic window salvaged from Covent Garden. They even noticed it was a birthday for our guest, and offered a discrete celebratory extra. Thank you for such a memorable experience. We will most certainly be back.
Roast is Borough Market’s best kept secret, or maybe not a secret any more. Regardless, food and service is excellent and you find a refined breakfast or lunch spot in the hustle and bustle of the market
Visited Roast on Christmas Eve and we had a fantastic evening! Great atmosphere and decorations, great service and excellent food. It was the right restaurant for dinner on a special night!
A beautiful 😍 place almost hidden in Borough Market! We visited for an afternoon tea near Christmas! 🎄 .Its not cheap but considering where it is the prices are reasonable. We had Christmas afternoon tea. 😀
Wonderful experience, service was impeccable and the bottomless processco was regularly topped up. Food was delicious, afternoon which is way better than any hotel I've been too. Definitely need to book, I'm going back for the beef wellington
This place is a hidden gem located in Borough Market. The food and atmosphere were fabulous, as was the service. I had the Beef Wellington which is a signature dish of theirs and can thoroughly recommend it.
Amazing location 👌 beautiful decor love the sunflowers 🌻. Delicious cuisine, scrumptious. Grateful to see a halal menu. Ribeye was my favourite coupled with Oysters and Scallops as starters. Mocktails were amazing.
Located in a high density area, this restaurant doesn't disappoint. The access it is a bit weird as they are located on the first floor of some old building, but the space it is nice, arranged, and feels nice. The staff is well trained and friendly. The food is basic English food, roast, grill, baked, fried, but cooked quite well. Well done, chefs! If you order oysters and you like them as they are, remember to tell the waiter not to put chive oil. For me, it is messing up the taste. Overall, I recommend it. Book it in advance as the place it is quite crowded.
I had the beef Wellington and chips with truffle sauce and it was all very good. Service was solid with a lot of attention which was great considering it was very crowded. Meal and drinks came out very quickly. I’ll definitely go back. Returned to bring my wife for a romantic Valentine’s dinner and it was delicious with solid service. We started with scotch egg and oysters, both very good. I had the halibut and my wife had the filet cooked medium rare with peppercorn sauce. The steak was cooked correctly and the sauce on the baked fish was great. We shared the broccoli with with black garlic sauce and for dessert we shared toffee sticky pudding. Everything was wonderful and ambience was very romantic.
Very decent roast but a tad pricey. Service was amazing but was incredibly busy and noisy due to Christmas parties. To be expected at this time of year. Decorated perfectly for Christmas.
We came here for the afternoon tea for a hen do/ birthday party and had a great time. The staff was very accommodating in letting us stay longer than the specified 3 hours. There was lots of dietary requirements from the group, they offer a vegetarian and halal afternoon tea which enabled the full group to enjoy the experience. The decor is beautiful, perfect for a girly or romantic dining experience out.
My team of roughly a dozen went to Roast this week for tea service. The Christmas decorations were still in place which creasted a festive atmosphere and the service was excellent. There were some dietary restrictions which were respected and taste didn't suffer. My favorite was the beef savory but others raved about the scotch egg and sausage roll. The scones were fresh and while the desserts were beautiful, they were too sweet for me. I realize though, that few others would have the same opinion. Finally, despite their being a large party seated behind us, also having tea, the service was unflagging.
Beautiful set up of the restaurant. A bit compact so minimal room to move around including the restroom which was a queue. The food was delicious and service was lovely. However I wasn’t expecting to be rushed before I my dessert arrived because there was a queue waiting to be seated. It was quite busy for a Sunday lunch which made it a little difficult to fully enjoy the experience as it was a birthday treat.
Right in the heart of Borough Market this place is an elevated oasis of calm above the frenetic buzz below. It is easy to miss but at the time of reviewing has a vibrant sunflower entrance as a land mark. Stairs and a lift are available giving the restaurant interesting views over the market below. Brunch was very good and there was no pressure to vacate our table. Both lunch and afternoon tea looked very good and I would be very happy to return to try either! Service was accommodating and efficient. Facilities were clean and white linen table cloths steamed smooth with a cordless iron….if you like that level of detail you appreciate this! My son’s only complaint was the amount of baked beans served in a minuscule pot was most definitely not sufficient.
Amazing Halloween decorations definitely 10/10. We tried the vegetarian afternoon tea, which was nice but the scones needed improvements, they were not your typical scones in afternoon tea hard and flaky and we didn’t finish them as really not tasty at all. Service was slow and waiters not attentive but other than service and scones the experience was good. The Halloween decor made up for the slow service.
I hadn't been to Roast for some years and going back I was pleasantly surprised. What a lovely space to eat in, opne of the prettiest dining rooms in London. The food was all lovely, my rib eye steak was just as I wanted it and the roast potatoes and bernaise that went with it were fabulous. Our waiter Giulio was excellent and made sure I got my Gimlet even if it wasn't on the menu. Recommended for a night out on the town
Halloween afternoon tea was amazing, but tea was absolutely awful for 59£. EarlGray was look like cheap english breakfast. The food, atmosphere was amazing. Tea is not bottomless unfortunately
Had a lovely time at Roast, but there were a couple of small issues that held it back. Starters: The Scotch egg was a highlight—crispy on the outside with a perfectly runny yolk. The beetroot sauce added a sweet balance, and the fresh watercress brought a nice touch. Mains: • The Beef Wellington was excellent—tender beef, crisp pastry, and the truffle mash was smooth and packed with flavor. The gravy tied it all together beautifully. • The steak, however, was a letdown. It was chewy and not cooked medium-rare as requested, which was disappointing considering the price point. Sides: The cauliflower cheese was indulgent with a golden, crispy top, the roast potatoes were perfectly crispy outside and fluffy inside, and the Yorkshire puddings were huge and light—exactly what you’d expect from a proper roast. Ambience: The space is stunning, especially with the festive decorations like the ceiling of wrapped gifts. The large windows create a bright, inviting atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely meal. Service: The staff were professional, polite, and attentive, which really enhanced the experience. Price: It’s worth mentioning that everything is on the expensive side. While the quality of the food is mostly great, the steak falling short made the price feel a bit harder to justify. Overall: Roast is a beautiful place with great service and mostly excellent food, but for the price, I expected everything to be spot on. Perfect for a special occasion, but just be prepared to spend a little more.
A very instagrammable afternoon tea. It’s smack bang in the middle of busy borough market so easy to miss with the crowds. Loved the decor and the china used, very elegant. The variety of food was great - not just sandwiches, scones and desserts but an extra plate of savoury. Plus they accommodated for our halal diet at really short notice. That to say there wasn’t unlimited food like there is with other places but I think that’s fine because I managed to finish everything. Only one scone but only one is needed and it was really tasty. The sausage roll wasn’t quite the juicy one I’m used to but I’m guessing they don’t know where to get the good halal stuff. The chocolate orange roulade could have done with more orange and a crunchy aspect would elevate it. The apple crumble was incredible. The kids meal was very generous and makes me want to come back for a halal roast dinner on Sunday!
We got the halal afternoon tea. Even tho it was pricey, we couldn’t eat all the food. Some of the pastries were too sweet. The scones were the best!! The sandwiches weren’t that good. I’ve had better sandwiches at less expensive places. They also add a service fee. Atmosphere is great for pics and service is a little slow but tolerable.
We went for Sunday Roast. Location was in the heart of Borough market (restaurant overlooks the market) Food was excellent - the roast potatoes were devine, the meat tender etc The service was excellent. Seems very well staffed and they were helpful regarding allergies (in our case lactose intolerance). What surprised us was how good the cocktails were (almost as good as some of our favourite cocktail bars). (see pics for recommendations). It would have been an easy 5 stars except for 2 small oversights on their part - so this is intended as feedback:- 1. They forgot our carrots and we had to ask for them. 2. The prices on the bill were slightly different from the menu - although worth the prices, still misleading and needs improvement on this kind of attention to details Overall excellent experience and not too pricey for the type of food, service and location. We will return soon.
The atmosphere was excellent and pleasing to the eye with all the decorations however there was one issue with this whole experience which made me write a 3 out of five I ordered a Moroccan tea and they served me with a very hot pot to which I burnt myself trying to pour myself a mug, but was quite satisfied with the taste The next issue I encountered was the mug itself. I didn’t think of looking twice into the mug as I thought this place was of excellence and high standard on hygiene but quite wrong as I found lots of little hairs in the tea when I poured the tea into the mug (like dust hair) I’ve shown one of the waitresses this matter and asked me for another mug to which I declined.
I have not been to Borough market for a number of years but the highlight used to be Roast to Go where they happily gave you chopped up pork and crackling with apple sauce and no bun. Or with the bun if you wanted it. I was crushed when I realised it was no longer there so decided to go to the Roast restaurant where I ordered the roast pork. Unfortunately it was pretty disappointing. The crackling was soft but not crackly. The pork was Ok but the middle bit very tough. The roast potatoes were OK but I have had better. Their bread was good Great views since they put me in a great window seat. Service was good and this plus the seat location is what got them to three stars. But I would be hard pressed to recommend the food. Shame. I had hoped to find a replacement for the stunning roast pork they used to serve. Happy to pay a lot more for the restaurant and it was about 4x the price but need it to be as incredibly good which it wasn’t. I shall have to find another option. The paella stall was busy so I might have to try that. I was sort of happy to get away from the crowds to eat but food needed to be better
Took my partner here for a Birthday lunch. We both ordered steak. One fillet and one ribeye. The fillet was cooked ok but could have been warmer. The ribeye was underwhelming. Grey, luke warm and lacking any juice. Even the huge knob of butter on top wasn't melting. I would not recommend the steaks here. There are better offerings in close proximity. The afternoon tea's looked good and the ambience of the restuarant is very nice. For the price point I was expecting much better. I can't see myself going back.
Went for Sunday evening meal with family. Great food, great wine list but consistently poor service. Waiting staff were very nice but we ordered drinks, 2 bottles of wine and a bottle of lager. Wines arrived, 10 minutes later, still no lager. Called waiter over and eventually the lager arrived. Food served but no gravy. Waited for gravy. Called waiter again and after waiting nearly 10 minutes the gravy arrived. We asked for water but none came. No one poured wine or checked if we needed anything. We decided to leave and asked for the bill, bill came and waiter disappeared- again we had to call staff over for us to pay. So, so disappointing for such a nice restaurant. I’m not thinking of returning soon.
Excellent food, let down by comically bad service. The positives - the roasts here are excellent, which is the only reason to come back. A really nice setting, above Borough Market. What lets it down is the service. With the exception of one person in the venue, the staff were clearly either stressed, completely disinterested or both. Think 20 mins for drinks to be provided. Don’t expect first class English service here (which you might reasonably expect given the high prices). It’s terrible and a bit embarrassing for the chefs who are working hard in the open kitchen, and a shame for a restaurant that should be great all around. You can do better in London. For a Sunday roast, go to the Wilmington or a similar pub.
It is a gorgeous looking place with the most beautiful decoration I've ever seen. But sadly that was the best thing I've experienced while being there. The service was partly very nice, partly very stressed and therefore a bit rude. It was also very loud, even though only half of the tables were seated. But because the tables were really close together, it was good that only half of the tables were in use. The food was quite nice, even though the "medium" beef fillet was grilled well done. But after informing our server, he gave us a new one. All in all it was an acceptable experience, but for the price you pay you don't get the service you would expect.
I had a meal at The Roast recently. The place was very noisy, which, although not a deal-breaker, was the start of a poor experience. What really let the place down was the service. We must have had five different people waiting on our table of two, which just felt chaotic and impersonal. The service was incredibly slow. A notable example of the lack of attention was that our water glasses sat empty while servers refilled other tables. Additionally, there was a lack of communication about the long wait for the mains, and they completely forgot one of our side dishes. The food was a mixed bag. The Scotch egg starter was pleasant, and the beef wellington was genuinely tasty. But the beef roast didn't deliver. The roast potatoes looked the part and were crispy, but inside they were dry and hard. The roast beef looked good on the plate, but was disappointingly chewy. The final insult was the bill. After waiting a long time for it to arrive, we noticed that a 15% service charge, which is higher than usual for London, given how poor the service had been and the hit-and-miss food, felt completely unjustified. All in all, I can't recommend The Roast. Given the combination of sloppy service, high prices, and inconsistent food, I recommend eating your roast elsewhere.
Went here for a family birthday Sunday lunch with 8. The worst service - Others have said they checked in costs and bags, we did not experience that but that’s ok. However, we were not served the complimentary bread while other tables were, service was extremely slow- slow to take any order, slow to serve, slow to help, staff blatantly ignore you, our waiter looked miserable and made us feel very uncomfortable for even requesting bread. There are annoying extra charges - cake fee, extra for gravy (they give a small amount as standard, even charged for the replacement gravy I asked for as mine was so watery). Atmosphere - It’s decorated well inside, very instagrammable, but it’s so noisy, it’s like eating dinner in the middle of a busy train station. Food - the food is alright, most of our table enjoyed what they ate. However the gravy is awful. Watery and flavourless, my partner is vegan and their gravy was much better, ask for that over the watery meat one. Would not go back, it’s an expensive place to post photos of on instagram. Service makes all the difference, and don’t charge extra for gravy! Just leaves a bad taste for not a lot extra. Just to add, this is the first place I’ve ever seen a non discretionary service charge in the UK. It’s 15% discretionary including £2 per head compulsory charge. I wonder if this is because many customers upset with the service are asking them to remove the service charge. (15% is higher than most and I’d expect top service for this).
We visited on a Thursday and had a 6pm booking. The Thursday special is advertised as roast suckling pig. When we tried to order it, we were told there was none left! The restaurant was mostly empty at this time. As we left later that evening, sitting proudly on display was a freshly cooked roast suckling pig! My starter of beetroot cured loch duart salmon was bland to the point of tasteless. In place of the suckling pig, we both ordered the beef wellington. The waitress should have suggested a side to go with as it was missing any greens. She didn't and so the dish felt incomplete. The beef and pastry were well cooked but the wild mushrooms and truffled mash dominated, so the beef was just there for texture and any flavour from the beef was just over powered. My dessert of whipped oat & mixed berry Eton mess, was the best part of the meal. They have a comprehensive wine list, but they are overpriced even by London standards. All in all, pretty disappointing. I shan't be returning, which is a shame as the menu promises so much, but it just fails to deliver in spectacular fashion.
Food was okay, nothing special and very expensive - had better roast dinners for £15. The queueing system to get in is a disaster, stood in a narrow corridor waiting even though you have a booking while people push in and out to get their coats etc. Tables were on top of one another and you could barely move let alone hear yourselves speak. Some waiting staff were quite good but didn't make up for the rest of it.
⭐️ 1/5 – Extremely Disappointing Experience We visited Roast in London Bridge after having afternoon tea there the previous week, which was truly 10 out of 10. That excellent experience is what encouraged us to return for our family business Christmas meal — but unfortunately, we were thoroughly let down. The service was unacceptable. It took over 20 minutes before anyone came to take our drinks order, and we had to ask multiple times for basic things like plates. When the mains arrived, things only got worse. The roast potatoes tasted reheated and were unpleasant, the meat was overcooked and tough, and the vegetables ranged from rock hard to completely mushy. The gravy was extremely runny and there wasn’t nearly enough of it, which made the meal even more disappointing. Overall, the experience was far below the standard Roast claims to offer, especially after such a great visit the week before. Unfortunately, we left very disappointed and won’t be returning.
I have been a loyal guest at Roast for years, but after my experience on Sunday, Feb 15th, I will never return and will be ensuring my friends and family do the same. We had a 3:15 PM reservation for a special anniversary. Upon arrival, we were met with a chaotic, stationary queue and a complete lack of organization. There was no communication from staff; we waited nearly an hour before we were finally seated, and that only happened because we were forced to bypass the queue ourselves just to get anyone’s attention. The atmosphere was tense and shambolic—the opposite of the "premium" experience Roast promotes. The most insulting part, however, was the management's response. After being "ghosted" for a week, I finally received a reply from Natalia. Rather than taking accountability for the floor management failure, she attempted to use "CCTV records" to claim our wait was only 15 minutes. To effectively call a loyal guest a liar to cover for incompetent floor management is a disgrace. They conveniently ignored the fact that they seated four other parties ahead of us while we stood there unacknowledged. Roast is happy to charge top-tier London prices, but they have zero professional integrity when things go wrong. If you want to be treated with respect and honesty, spend your money elsewhere in Borough Market. Avoid at all costs.
Very good looking aesthetics. Super clean toilets. Food is mediocre. And very very expensive. A beef burger was charged at £29 ... with beef shavings well hidden. And it was horrible tasting. Ate it as i paid £29!! Also potatoes they truly mean it's triple fried. David could have used them on Goliath to shoot with the catapult. Way overpriced for everything...and tasteless food. Sorry
Was looking forward to trying this restaurant for the first time and booked for Valentine's Day, but the experience was disappointing. The food was okay, just not memorable. The beef tartare was average, and the pork belly came with mash that tasted like it was from a supermarket. What really let the evening down was the service. Our drinks arrived about ten minutes apart, a side dish I ordered never appeared, and there was roughly a 40‑minute wait between starters and mains. When I ordered wine, the waiter didn't seem to know the wine list and initially told me I'd mis-ordered until I pointed it out on the menu. To top it off, when I asked for the service charge to be removed and tried to explain why, the response was simply to ask me to pay, with no interest in feedback. The atmosphere didn't help either—the tables were packed so tightly that the table next to us kept knocking into me throughout the meal. Overall, a poor experience, especially for a special occasion. I'd avoid.
