Good quality food hardy portions for a very fair price, especially these days. And good service as well.
You can get all three meals (and snacks) at this casual, beachy spot. Tasty, big portions of Hawaiian classics that will fill you up without emptying your wallet. A king-size lunch bowl could feed a family of four. The spam musubi is amazing. Sliders, rice bowls, breakfast sandwiches available to go, or to eat onsite (outdoor and indoor options available).
my number 1 westside staple! i rush here after i pick up or drop off loved ones at the airport. my faves include the island fried saimin, the french toast, the spam musubi, and of course the royale! rutt’s staff has always welcomed me, my friends, and my family with kindness and generous service. ive been coming here since i was a teen and rutt’s will always have my heart and my appetite!
Rutt’s Hawaiian Cafe, brah! Da grindz stay ono, no joke. Chicken katsu, crispy fo’ days—broke da mout kine. Galbi ribs? Buss up da sweet-salty balance, jus’ right. BBQ chicken? Juicy, make da belly so happy. But, braddah, wen no moa time fo’ take pictures—too hungry, had fo’ dive straight in! 🤙
This is a must stop. Next time I’m going after the airport. The food was good and just like home fr. The right taste and everything. Made right.
Terrific taste and portions. Ask for the Lau Lau and options beside rice and Mac. Rice and Mac are great, but together, that's too much of a good thing.
I had the pleasure of ordering the Spam Musubi from Sven at the counter. It was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and I appreciate the recommendation from Sven! You rock man! I also went with the EXPRESS SERVICE where I saved an additional 10% off my meal TO EAT ON THE PATIO! I bought a canned coke for only 95¢ which is killer deal anywhere in LA! The Spam Musubi was only $2.45. After the discount, it only came out to $3.35. This place rocks! Check it out and ask Sven for a recommendation!
We ate a great breakfast here yesterday. The food was great and the staff was very friendly. My husband ordered the Original Royale with fried rice, I had the French toast, and our daughter had the spam with eggs and hash browns. YUM! Everything was amazing. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to go back again!
This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The jr size plate was enough to fill me (Male 250 pounds) and was about 14 dollars. Spam masubi obviously fire, honestly I don't know what else to say. Take my damn money.
It is exactly what you would expect - a no frills, diner style Hawaiian restaurant with all the delicious greasy meat you can eat. I came here for a quick and easy island style breakfast - 2 eggs, cottage cheese and Portuguese sausage. It was delicious and full of protein for those of you who care about that stuff. I initially came here because I was craving some good Kona coffee and they did not disappoint. And it’s bottomless (score!) This isn’t your bougie WEHO brunch spot. It’s not pretentious or yuppie either. This is REAL FOOD.
Good food, good prices, friendly service. Really liked this place
I got a junior hawaiian royale and still couldn't finish all of it. It was delicious!! The coffee was good too, better than usual diner coffee. I would call it a scramble though, not a scrambled omelette (I thought that was confusing). I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with anything you get here. So, I almost deducted a star because they seemed visibly confused that I was there alone. Maybe they don't get that many travellers?? It is in Venice/Culver area, but not near the beach. I tend to venture away from tourist traps in LA, as I come to this city a lot and don't want to get bored... so maybe I don't seem like a tourist. But technically I still am.. anyways.. not that big of a deal. But just for the first couple minutes it was weird because they didn't seem to know what to do with a lone female by herself! Once seated at the bar, everything was good.
Several meal options based on a few staple items. No frills, fast, friendly service, extremely good value. Outdoor seating area is a plus, as is the generous happy hour for both drinks and food.
Ada A. Was an amazing server! Attentive, patient & very knowledgeable. The turkey sausage was surprisingly really good and tbh it was low key better than the Portuguese sausage. The only thing I need them to work on is the lumps in the gravy, either strain in or use a whisk when preparing it.
Had such an amazing time bringing my fiancé here. Ordered to go once before but finally sat in the cafe. Great service and OUTSTANDING food, soooo flavorful. Prices are great too. The shakes are delightful and the short rib is to die for. Will be coming back with more friends!
Ruts has been a staple of my upbringing since the early nineties, and the food has not changed since great place to have breakfast.Lunch or dinner.
The food is delicious and never disappoints. A small part of me always hopes that Gene Simmons will come out of the kitchen like he did on the diners, Drive-Ins and dives.
Oh my God. I love hawaii and Hawaiian food, so I was destined to find this place sooner or later and thank God i did. The bbq is tender and tasty, and portions go from normal to ridiculous size. I had the breakfast Royal recently and quickly overstood why they call it a Royal, because it’s Majestic. Eggs, char sui, portuguese sausage and vegetables all scrambled together and seasoned to perfection and served over white rice. Simple but perfect. this place is a gem and i’m glad i found it.
I love this place been coming here for years. My grandma brought me when I was a kid. She passed away a few years back and I still go thinking of her. I love getting pancakes from here it's really good.
Food is always good with great portions. Beef stew especially good and nice happy hour menu.
This place if definitely a Top 3 Breakfast Spot in ALL of LA They have such unique dishes and the flavor is almost overwhelming. And they deliver that goodness time and time again....and then again and again The Royale with a Hawaiian Roll and the flavors are just so good. The char-siu and the linguica sausage and teriyaki and rice and all the veggies and eggs and stuff......oh man. It's like the best chemistry experiment in your mouth! And the staff is so sweet. I think I've been coming here for over 20 years and it seems like it's still the same 3 folks greeting me with smiles Rutt's puts love into every dish leaving the kitchen.....consistent goodness
We could not be more pleased with our experience at Rutts. The prices were reasonable and the quality of food was wonderful! We ordered for a group of of 18 and We had a feast at a reasonable price in less than an hour! Jhoan who served us was amazingly attentive and ensured we had a great experience. Would eat here again anytime!
First of all, I’ve been ordering from here for 5+ years and I recently have been using their catering menu to order for the company I temp for! Not only is their food always on point and authentic and genuine but their staff and community is literally the most patient people! Always with their consistent service and quality of foods. I recently ordered from Rutt’s and went to pick up my order while having a pms bipolar episode and they were thankfully patient with my weirdness and stuff but I didn’t apologize or anything, just ended up hanging up on the person who was trying her hardest to listen to me while I was misidentifying containers of chicken with mushrooms 🤔🙂↔️ I realized I was being a complete dick the way I was reacting to her and she was still patient and understanding to me, I mean not in a submissive way but she was professional while I obviously wasn’t doing well. Anyway that’s my 2 cents, BE NICE TO THE EMPLOYEES AND EAT THE FOOD FOR SURE
Rutt's is always a great spot for tasty Hawaiian food. None of the chain Hawaiian or similar type restaurants come close. The Portuguese sausage is very tasty, and so is the loco moco. It's definitely a great eat, and I highly recommend it if you're in the mood for some good food.
I have been going to Rutts for more than 25 years now. I loved the old place with the tiny dining area and great surroundings. The new place is nice also, but it would be hard to recreate the old surf shack feel. The food has not changed. Its still great. My unquestionable favorite the Original Royale.
We had some friends coming over for dinner and ordered a variety of food. Every was great. We will definitely eat there again!
I stumbled upon Rutt’s Hawaiian Café in Culver City a few years ago and had dinner there with some friends. Rosie and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, and every single one was a hit. Since then, I’ve been using Rutt’s to cater our special events every year. Being far from Hawai‘i makes finding a legit loco moco a challenge, but Rutt’s nails it every time. My friends swear by the kahlua pork, and I’m always excited to explore something new on their menu. This year’s surprise favorite was the Beef Stew from their catering selection—comforting, hearty, and packed with flavor. Honestly, everything I’ve tried has been consistently delicious: chow fun, BBQ chicken, baby back pork ribs, beef short ribs, katsu chicken salad, mac salad, sliders, and even their steamed veggies is unbelievably ono. Huge mahalo to Paul for taking such great care of my catering order this year. If you’re in LA or planning a visit, Rutt’s is definitely a spot to add to your list, you won't be disappointed!
I had the boneless short rib lunch plate and it was pretty good, could use more sauce though since the short ribs were thick. The lunch plate already comes with rice so no need to order rice on the side unless you want to eat more rice. They give you a decent size portion, I saved some for dinner. Server was very nice and accommodating. The place has decent size people. Pretty social atmosphere.
In all honesty I cannot claim to be an authority on Hawaiian cuisine but I do know that Rutt's makes absolutely AMAZING food. It's a terrific option if you love Asian food & are looking for a thinly veiled excuse to eat it before noon. Recommended: Any Royale & (for dessert) French Toast.
I had the mixed plate special and replaced the mac salad with steamed veggies. The plate was perfect and fed two people! Meat was all cooked perfectly. Kal-Bi and BBQ Chicken go great with the sauce! I'll definitely be coming back to sample a lot of other things on their menu!
Rutt’s Hawaiian Café joined us for our elementary school’s Passport Night—and once again, they delivered in every way. Working with Alex was seamless. We created an exceptional catering order that included a full tray of both fresh fruit and salad, as well as some of the evening's most popular items, veggie spring rolls and chicken musubi. Everyone enjoyed the fresh, tasty options. Aside from the delicious food, Alex's unwavering support was what really made Rutt's stand out. When I ran into a last-minute scheduling issue, she personally delivered both Rutt’s and Tut’s catering orders to the school and even stayed to quickly assist with set up. Alex truly went above and beyond by taking the time to label each item and list any food allergens. Thank you, Rutt’s, for your generosity, attention to detail, and for being such a dedicated partner.
This is the most affordable and delicious Happy Hour menu available on the west side of Los Angeles. Rutt’s is the first Hawaiian restaurant I’ve been to and the food was great! The spam musubi, salmon tacos and the shrimp tempura were some of my favorite dishes. This might be a little bit out of the ordinary, but I would recommend trying the spam musubi dipped in the tempura sauce if you order both. Like reviews? The Original Hawaiian Royal w/ Fried Rice - Portugeuse Sausage, Char Sui (Chinese BBQ Pork), Eggs, Fried Rice, Sprouts, Onions / 5⭐! Spam Masubi - spam, rice, sauce, seawood wrap / 5⭐! Hawaiian-style Macaroni Salad / 5⭐! I am a fan of Hawaiian food partly because it is a wonderfully, eclectic blend of influences from other cuisines and has evolved far enough to have its own distinct culinary identity. Rutt's Hawaiian Cafe, an LA Hawaiian cafe with a few locations around the SoCal area, fully embraces the food that makes Hawaii special. Their menu includes a large list of island favorites. I was drawn towards the Royale dish, which is something that isn't available at lots of other Hawaiian places. A Royale is an egg/omelette dish mixed with rice and fillings. I went with their original which includes sausage and char sui and I went for the fried rice version. It was amazing! So much flavor with all the ingredients mixed together. Every bite was magic. It was also insanely filling. I used some of the bbq sauces on the table to add a bit more kick. I love Hawaiian style macaroni salad as well as spam masubi. Had I known how big the royale was, I'd probably have just ordered that but I was keen to try some other items. No regrets! The spam masubi is always a fun dish to have. It is a nice savory/sweet combo and hit the spot. Their take on the macaroni salad was also excellent. The restaruant is bright and colorful. I like that a large copy of the menu greets you at the door. There are lots of seats inside and outside on a patio. The servers were friendly and helpful. My server is who convinced me to try the royale. There is a very small parking lot connected to the restaurant but it also looked like there was lots of easy street parking. If you love Hawaiian cuisine or if you are curious what makes a great Hawaiian dish, give Rutt's a try! They have been open for a long time and have a lot of great food in their friendly, colorful location.
A family favorite since we found it 8+ years ago!! I can’t say enough about how wonderful the staff is and the food is consistently delicious !! Some of our favorites include the spam musubi, Original Royale (with fried rice), Saimin with extra extra fish cakes, Veggie Royale (with fried rice), kalua pork quesadilla, the Mac salad and you gotta try the Hawaiian bread French toast!!
There’s nothing fancy about this place but the food is so tasty. My favorite dish from the menu is combo fried rice, the taste and portion really hit the spot. Service is always friendly especially the girl with a bun on top her head and latino guy. The price for the food and beer is cheap compare to other restaurants around.
Ever since my husband and I went to hawaii we have craved delicious Hawaiian food! This place was great! The vibe is really chill, the service was awesome and the food is outstanding. We each ordered something different to try a few things and the boneless short rib dinner was definitely my favorite, but everything we had was delicious. I definitely recommend this place!
My go to place if I just wand a good solid meal after a workout, hungover or just feeling like I need some meat. Love it!
The friendliness is always great and the food is definitely delicious. I got the salmon royale and my husband the 3 short rib tacos. We arrived during happy so I grab a glass of wine.

The scene was utter chaos when I arrived for breakfast on a Saturday morning with some friends, but they still got us seated and topped up on coffee in only a few minutes. Seems like they're making a big push to use the online queuing system; we had a little confusion trying to find the confirmation text but everyone was courteous about it. Rutts has everything you'd expect out of a diner breakfast: hashbrowns, eggs done anyway you want them, bacon, sausage, etc a la carte or combined into bowls, burritos, and plates. Some Hawaiian twists: Spam, char siu, and chicken are available as an option in just about every dish French toast made with Kings Hawaiian sweet rolls Spam musubi as a side Enormous portions - a jr. size bowl is about all I could handle before noon. It's not exactly gourmet dining and the outdoor seating can be a little awkward, but I love this place
Seems like most of the food deals with breakfast and lunch. I went for dinner. Chicken and Shrimp combo. Food was good. Had a Hawaiian shaved ice and that was very flavorful. Coconut shrimp was good especially the Sweet and Sour (it has a touch of spice to it). The atmosphere is definitely very beach friendly (expected some sand in the parking lot). Lots of beer choices if you wish. Good place to check out.
Food was pretty good here and they are not shy with their portions. The food was also very quick to come out, from the appetizers to the entrees. Wait staff was quick to seat (given that it was open seating) and greet us and were very efficient. The atmosphere was kind of dull but they did put in some effort to give it an island-esque feel I suppose. Overall not a bad spot.
Saw this on DDD and had to try it. Food was very good and as many people have commented, the portions are very generous. The restaurant is open and airy and has seating both on a streetside patio and a covered patio on the side. TNH, the rainbow shaved ice was my fave part, great on a warm day. Overall, great visit and great value.
So I got the Rutt burger and fries. I would have tried more, but I have a soy allergy. The teriyaki and other flavors were too dangerous for me. The burger was so good. It has flavor and lots of lettuce tomato and onion. I added bacon and it hit the spot. The fries were cooked and seasoned well. Overall a great meal for the value. You can't miss. Lots of to go orders.
Their house special royale (fried rice) plate is fire. Service was a bit weird, one of the waitresses kept making blunders (walking away after taking our drink order after we said we were ready to order, then forgetting our drinks but lingering around pre-bussing other empty tables) - not sure if it was just an off day for her, but it was definitely weird when it kept happening throughout the meal. That one particular lady aside, service was pretty good. Definitely get the royale!
PARKING Small parking lot and street availability SEATING Inside and outside seating including outdoor patio area FOOD We had the Hawaiian Fried Saimin, Katsu Chicken & Shrimp Plate and Regular Combo plate. Overall it was good including the katsu sauce. Would I come back? Yes, no question to try a few other places. SERVICE
Grabbed lunch here today. I'm always skeptical of Hawaiian food. This place was good. I had the chili omelette & it was pretty good. I tried the Kahlua pig & it was pretty good. They fry it up a bit so it has a crunch to the texture which was satisfying. The huli huli chicken was good. They had a pineapple bread pudding with chocolate sauce drizzled on top & that was the highlight! Overall, the food was good. The prices were reasonable. The service was speedy but not the most friendly. No one was rude at all. The server was just very matter of fact.
Very comforting, typical dishes. Exactly what you would expect to be catered at a Hawaiian-themed birthday party. No flairs, no frills, just solid classics. Given that the restaurant leans more toward catering and take-out, the interior feels a bit like an afterthought, so don’t expect a very vibey dine-in experience. There is a fun “tiki bar” inside the restaurant, however.
Parking was a little difficult, on a very busy street, clean location with indoor and outdoor seating. Menu was very large offered Hawaiian, Mexican, and American, a little odd. Prices are fair, food was just ok, not too impressed but it was good. Would recommend, but not sure if I’d return.
Hawaiian local chain with homey bites. Came here with a couple of friends on a Monday evening around 6pm and there was no wait. Street parking available and there’s a small parking lot off the side for the restaurant. Credit cards accepted. There’s dinein and takeout available. We got the original Hawaiian royale, the catering sample plate, and 2 for $5 spam musubis. There’s an option to make the plates “king-size” but the normal size was good for the 3 of us. The royale had a good amount of meat, and the catering sample plate had a good variety. I particularly liked the bbq beef. The mac salad was nice and came with a Hawaiian roll.

Rutt's is always good. Good people working there. Good food. Good ambiance and good times. Not the best Hawaiian food I've had in LA but it's always very solid. Stopped by today for happy hour and …
The food at this place was mediocre at best, not truly authentic Hawaiian cuisine. Instead, it seemed more like Mexican food with a Hawaiian twist. To top it off, there was Mexican music playing while we ate, which further emphasized the fusion vibe rather than a traditional Hawaiian experience. However, the service was outstanding, with a very friendly staff making up for the culinary letdown. I can see how this can be a Haole's favorite spot.
Hard to find parking. Best to ride a bike here or find street parking. Maybe I came on an off day, meats were overdone, dry, salty and pulled pork was overcooked in liquid smoke which wasn't good at all. I used to love coming here, will come back again for breakfast and hopefully find the old magic tastes.
Food was good I'll order something different next time
Not the best pork Lau Lau I’ve ever had. If you crave Lau Lau like I do, it helps, but it was a little dry and maybe too salty? Also, my receipt says rice and macaroni but I got two rices and no macaroni ): I do want to try other dishes here too though, and maybe they will live up to the hype!
A word of caution, be careful about what you choose if you actually know authentic Hawaiian cuisine because you could be in for a real bruiser of a dissatisfied type of day <[single tear]> wah. I've eaten at Rutt's on several occasions and have never been displeased before so let's make that clear; they have a wide variety of menu options that includes some tasty stuff. Buuuuut THEN I ordered the Kalbi Plate and woowee, what a disappointment that was; tummy was unhappy & unsatisfied and so was wallet. When I see "Hawaiian" in any restaurant name or description, I get all nostalgic about the thousands (no kidding) of Kalbi plate lunches I've had and I generally never scratch that itch because it's generally a let down and on this day, it fortified that discontent. The friendly enough staff served, two...yes just two of the thinnest thinly cut Kalbi's I ever did see with my two wittle eyes. And guess what, those two wittle baby ribs matched the amount of seasoning they used too. No island flavor brah and could barely even suss out the salt and pepper! I was like, "these guys make em pipikaula or what" but I doubt they even know what that is lol. Weak flavor and weak portion = muy mal comida guey. Luckily my other half ordered the Portuguese sausage bowl which was alright and I avoided the, "I can't believe you took me here" scolding since it was my idea but needless to say, gonna have to play it safe at Rutt's and just order spam. All in all, don't challenge the kitchen too hard because you're liable to be letdown.
Its ok...nothing special...one thing is coffee is like dilute water..too weak. Need to at least have good coffee. KONA maybe. Also maybe hash brown as an option with the egg plates. Overall its…
Pretty disappointed with the chicken katsu so maybe steer clear from ordering that here? It has a plain, no texture batter compared to the typical crunchy texture of the katsu from other hawaiian fast food chains. I would probably order something else next time like loco moco or one of their royales. I do like the flavor of the coconut shrimp but it was a little on the dry side. Good mac salad and staff was really great though!
It was one of my favorite restaurant for Saturday morning breakfast almost every other Saturday I’ve been there for dine in or I do take out. All the time I paid by cash or credit card but this time was little different. after I finished my breakfast I asked for the check and I seen there is a bar code and “SCAN And pay” on the check. So I scan and paid through online and there was a 15% coupon so I did applied the 15% off coupon while it’s pop up on my screen. Then the old lady came to me and she was very rude because I applied 15% off she was kind of yelling at me you should not do this It’s only for the express checking and it’s a full dine in you should not use it. My question is how am I supposed to know that I can’t use this coupon ? While it’s pop up before I check out!! You should tell me before or you should remove it from your website/payment processing page if you don’t want your customers use it. Food was always good no complain but Awful customer service from the old lady. That way she was acting It’s seems like she was paying from her pocket to the owner this 15% coupon I applied. I’ve been there so many times but I never used this coupon that was the first time I used and learned new experience from her. Other waiters was very friendly.

First strike was the confusing ordering. I was asking questions and they didn’t seem to understand them at all. It was a little frustrating. Second strike was that they got my order wrong. Third, the food was just bleh. Nothing special to it. Less than bleh. Not coming back. Actually, this place makes me not wanna get Hawaiian food outside of Hawaii now.
I ordered the kalbi short rib plate to go and it was a $20 plate of food. I just got home and opened it up and it has only two pieces of meat in it. Super disappointing. I feel totally ripped off. Most places that serve this, if it’s the only kind of meat on the plate, will have four pieces.
Worst Hawaiian food I’ve ever had. Maybe their breakfast or catering is great. But wow it was awful skimpy portions, random crappy frozen vegs, burnt and dry meat. Dry rice. I really don’t know how this place has such great reviews. Maybe new management or chefs. Really really terrible
Im honestly shocked after seeing these reviews? I grew up in Hawai’i and was so excited to see fried saimin on a menu. We ordered 2 saimin, 4 musubi, and mac salad. Saimin was so overdone it disintegrated in our mouths and were somehow super wet but allegedly was fried? The musubi had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever and started to fall apart immediately. Legitimately lightly fried spam smacked in between rice. May be the worst mac salad I’ve ever tasted. Feels like a waste to trash it all but sadly it’s where it ended up.
Literally never coming here again, rude employees who are inattentive and blatantly don’t care. I ordered to go and still left a 20% tip. My food came out ready and the staff literally saw that my food was ready and continued to hang decorations on the wall. I had to ask them to give me my to go order and they left out my drink that I ordered as well. After I asked her to put my drink in the bag she ignored me and placed it in the counter while attending to another guest. The other worker looked at me like I was the rude one. This exact same thing happened the previous time I gave this place a try. This time around, the food was salty and disgusting. Place went downhill.
