We drove 120 miles to eat at this fantastically authentic joint. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience from meeting the pit men to coming out smelling deeply of smoke. I have a theory that any food that arrives on a piece of paper must be good and it certainly held true for this place.
This is great BBQ from an even better BBQ joint! My family has enjoyed this BBQ for more than 20 years. The whole place has atmosphere that gives honor to BBQ. The ceiling and walls are smoked, and so are the men who stand in the back room waiting to serve up your order on brown butcher paper. Ask for Alex, he'll take good care of you! My favorites are the ribs and sausage! My wife and daughters like the same and brisket, too. Add some fresh onion, pickles, pickled jalapenos and some crackers or bread, and you’ll be in heaven!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Luling City Market has the BEST BBQ in Texas—hands down! Every visit is an absolute treat. The brisket is perfectly smoked, tender, and packed with flavor, while the ribs are juicy and fall-off-the-bone amazing. The sausage is some of the best I’ve ever had, and their sides are equally delicious—don’t skip the beans or potato salad! The staff is super friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help you choose the perfect meal. The atmosphere is casual, fun, and full of Texas charm, making it a great spot to grab lunch or dinner with friends and family. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Luling City Market is a must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Texas BBQ. Every bite keeps me coming back—truly unbeatable!
Old school Texas tradition. Greatest BBQ in the area. You enter the "meat room" and YOU become the meat... The air thick w oak from the pits, hot and savory scent of cooked BBQ meat THICK in the air. (asthma and copd folks STAY OUTTA room) The meat servers are masters of their craft, serving up your choice of the best BBQ in the area quickly and with friendly precision. After meat purchase (TIP THOSE FOLKS IN THE MEAT ROOM WELL 💰, THEY SURE EARN IT). It's time to hit the "sides and drink counter". Divide and conquer if multiple people in your party for the side dishes, desserts, drinks and the like. I absolutely LOVE the fact this place stays the same after all these years. The only real change to me is that credit cardscare now accepted (it's been a long time since I've gotten out this way). I remember when cash or local check was the only methods of payment back in the day. I drove right thru Lockhart and past their "best" BBQ joints to get to Luling City Market BBQ, as I've been told by multiple folks, why try the rest when you can have THE BEST? Hard to argue. Two days later and my shirt still smells like BBQ smoke when I did laundry 😂🤣
Luling City Market BBQ Joint was recommended by my new friend Bill Dumas and he also recommended what to get. Hence the Big Red sugar bomb! An old school BBQ joint that looks just like any other sit down cafe. But in the back Smokehouse are a group of men that are waiting to carve up what meats you want. You walk through one smoke stained swing door, get served by the team and then out the otherside. This style of service is so cool and an awesome tradition. Brick offsets run with open fires. Once cooked, they are buttoned off (with less wood burning) and are used to keep the smoked meats and sausage warm for service. Super friendly staff in the front that jumped at the chance to get a photo and a little cooler but equally friendly staff at the back that let me take photos and lifted the lids on the smokers to snap a few shots. Good home style BBQ, great sausage, and the combo of the fatty brisket and sausage on white bread with dill pickles, onion and their special sauce was unreal. #lulingcitymarket #bbqwithbark

Was told about City Market by a friend. Since I was riding through the area, I took the opportunity to stop. The atmosphere is awesome. You walk back into a dark room to order your meat, then go up front and order sides and drinks, a bit odd but it seems to work for them. The brisket is good, nothing super special, the sauce is pretty great though, very unique. After asking another friend, I should have gotten the ribs, it is what they are known for. Next time.
I enjoy my BBQ like any other Texan. We ordered a pound of brisket and ribs. Ribs were nice and juicy, the brisket was a little dry for me. The meat needed bbq sauce to make it juicy and more flavorable. Customer service was great. The line moved rather quickly. Keep in mind, there are no plates available for use. They provide brown parchment paper and plastic utensils. Would recommend making a bigger restroom for both men and women. The size of place and the number of people that were there, the restrooms should have at least 3 stalls instead of one where you have to wait your turn. Overall, good place to eat and socialize. Great for any size groups.
Pucked up some ribs, a sausage, pickles, beans and coleslaw. All were really good. Ribs were tender. Pickles yummy. As were the sides. I do wish I remembered to get some sauce but made my own so all was well. You go to the back to get and pay for your meat. And the rest is purchased up front. Bring cash to save on credit card fees.
Met some friends for lunch, and we were lucky enough to go early to avoid the long line. We shared ribs, brisket, and sausage, which were all tasty, and that sauce... a little sweet but still good. Once we were done, the line was outside the door down the sidewalk. I highly recommend going early!
This place has some good bbq with true smoke flavor! Brisket was good, not great. Ribs were great, sausage was good. Their sauce is very unique and goes great with the ribs. None of the meat seemed too heavily seasoned, but had bark from the smoke. Only sides they have are beans, potato salad, and chips. We enjoyed their beans a lot. They have a card reader now! Atmosphere was great and seemed to have plenty of seating even for the line of people ordering. Friendly and helpful staff.

You want dried out brisket and ribs this is the place. Beans are flavorless and the sweet tea ain't sweet. Plenty of room. Easy to see why.
The memorabilia on the walls and the retro feel of the place was definitely a plus. The food was a completely different subject however. The texture of the sausage was grainy and the brisket lacked flavor. The texture and pull of the brisket was totally off and was rubbery. I will most definitely not be back again. I'm a major foodie and BBQ is something I do not play about. Try Black's BBQ in New Braunfels or Terry Black's in Austin and save yourself a disappointing trip. P.S. the bakery next door is a WINNER! Their homemade bread, which we sliced ourselves and used for homemade french toast, was so buttery and delicious. And, EVERY COOKIE we purchased from their display was decadent and delicious. It made our trip to Luling 100% worth it!
I was not familiar with the establishment but had heard the barbecue was good. I believe they assume everyone is familiar with there process, but I was not. It seemed like I was a bother. What was most incredulous to me was the fact that the barbecue didn't even come with sauce. After I had been through the register 2 times already after getting my meat and paying for it, when I asked about the barbecue sauce, I was instructed I had to go back and buy it. I asked for jalepeno sausage and was told they only have one kind here but was welcome to buy jalepenos. The gentlemen that I was treating to the meal asked me to get potato salad mentioned that it seemed like it had changed, almost as if they got it from HEB grocery store. . I also requested fatty brisquet and it was dry, although the flavor was good. I prefer Blacks barbecue in Lockhart, I have never had bad service there.
The line was extremely long to get inside the restaurant so we were anticipating great food! The wait wasn’t entirely long but the heat made it feel like it was. Once we got our BBQ the presentation was great but the lack of flavor was disappointing. The ribs were pretty good but the brisket was very fatty and the most flavor was when we added lots of BBQ sauce. The sausage was a bit greasy. Overall the service was nice but definitely need more flavor in the BBQ.

I enjoy going to great barbecue places across Texas. City Market is supposed to be one of them. When we got there, there was a long line, but it moved quickly. The man helping us with our order was extremely nice. I paid $50 exact, only barbecue, for 2 people. THE BARBECUE WAS NOT SPECIAL. The brisket was dry. The sausage was okay, but Eckrich sausage from the supermarket is okay. The ribs were not bad, but there's nothing about them that's good enough to write about. This place is resting on its laurels. We were so disappointed. For $50 for 2 people and a great write up in Texas Monthly, I expect better. SAD.
Not sure what the hype was all about. I would rate this as “only stop if it’s the only BBQ joint open within 50 miles. The brisket was mid at best with mild smoke flavor. The hot sausage wasn’t hot and had little flavor. No crisp casing, meat was mushy and bland. Hard pass on the sweet yet flavorless potato salad. BBQ sauce was good and you’ll need it for sausage. The ice water was good and cold though!!! Go to one end of the store, pick your meat out and pay. Then go to the other end of the store and buy your drinks and sides separately. Very inefficient, perhaps part of the Hill Country BBQ novelty. The hype definitely was not worth it. Much better options out there if your looking for a better bbq experience.
If you’re looking for a really good BBQ meal and are passing through, I’d keep driving. This place came highly recommended, but it’s an average bbq place. While the ribs were absolutely delicious, we were hoping the small menu meant they excelled at a curated, 5 item menu. Unfortunately that was not the case. The food wasn’t bad, just average and not worth your money or getting a second time. They definitely can’t compete with some other bbq here in Texas, so manage your expectations. We took our food to-go for a picnic down the road and you’d also be insulted to be served some of the driest brisket. We always ask for marbled to ensure we get something flavorful and moist and I have no idea why any pit master would be proud to serve us these pieces. The sauce is mustard based and doesn’t complement or help a dry brisket already lacking flavor. The potato salad is average and fine for a cookout, the beans were good and had potential, but ultimately the meal was disappointing in taste. Truthfully, the brisket we had was no better than Bill Miller BBQ. I do feel like I wasted money and was still asked to tip when you go to two separate counters to order. I recommend finding somewhere else to eat or scratch that BBQ itch.

I don't like it, you never see the weight of the meat and they give you a price without calculating the weight and price... and only they see the scale, not the customer.

This place has always been nostalgic to me. For over 30 years this place has been a special treat and we would drive an hour each way to feed our family when they would visit from out of state. It pains me to leave a 1 star reveiw, however yesterday my wife picked up an order to go, the guy at the register gave her a hard time about not leaving a tip. She responded sorry times are hard, and he replied " yeah its hard for everyone". I wasn't there, had i been, there would have been an exchange of words for his disrespect towards my wife. After 30 years I can no longer recommend city market. In addition to the horrible customer service, the brisket is of cheap quality. Dry/tough and had no marbling. Obviously trying to save money on meat cost. you get what you pay for. The sausage was still good though.
