Hands down my favorite restaurant in town. Always consistent with serving delicious food. Very friendly staff. I've been a customer for over thirty years.

The best Mexican food in the county in my opinion. On point food and service. Never had anything I didn't like. Beans and rice best I've eaten anywhere else.

Having been going here for years and the food is always great. We have moved from Bakersfield to Dallas but every time we visit Bakersfield we have stop in. The number 11 is our favorite. The salsa is awesome.

I've enjoyed the lunch specials at El Sombrero going back to my days working at Bakersfield Audio in the early 70s. Still the same great food and service! For dinner my goto was Jimenez Cafe!

Been going here for my entire life. Came here since I was a newborn and the waitresses still remember me from being a kid. Best overall food in town, one of the best Mexican restaurants in the entire country. I’ve traveled to the biggest of big cities and the smallest of small. Big beautiful restaurants and holes in the walls. El Sombrero beats them all. I have moved out of state and my literal only regret is not being able to eat here regularly. It’s now just a couple times a year when I’m in town. I could literally drink the salsa, for My birthdays friends would just bring me El Sombrero salsa. The Carnitas and Carne Asada are my go to’s. Phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. I refuse to go to another Mexican restaurant in Bakersfield, solely because El Sombrero exists. No drive is too far when I’m in town.

Stopped in Bakersfield with lifelong friends driving back to So. Cal. from a trip to Yosemite. All of us Mexican food lovers... This restaurant is legit! Prompt, attentive service, delicious authentic Mexican food served in a family setting, and the owner stopping by the tables to check if everything is OK. They've been here 52 years... and for good reason!

Great food, fantastic service. Went there for a quick lunch. Food came out fast eventhough they were about 3/4 full of customers at the time. The waitress went above and beyond and was super friendly and kind.

One of the best families in town with AMAZING food and service. It is heartwarming to see family-owned businesses like El Sombrero where every family member does their part to help the business run like a well-oiled machine. Everything from being greeted at the door with a friendly smile to how quickly you receive your food is incredible. Thank you for making El Sombrero our Sunday night spot. Your food makes me happy!

I have been going here for 17 years the food is always delicious. Authentic is the key here, everything you try will be good. My favorite is the Chili Verde or the tostada. Don't forget to take some salsa home with you. They sale it by cup size.

B

Consistent quality... clean...friendly staff; much nicer now that Jesse is managing, his mom, Lucy, makes everyone feel welcomed. Family owned and operated. Best chilli Verde in Kern County!! Will customize the guaccamole to suit your taste at no extra cost. Have been going there for years. Jesse's sister had been managing it but she lacked people skills so we had to stop going until we heard her brother Jesse was managing.

El Sombrero Mexican Food Restaurant has the best Mexican food because it is authentic Mexican food! All of their entrees are delicious, but I like their Nachos. You can order it the way you want. I also love their #7, which comes with taco, enchilada, rice, and beans with tortillas, but I substitute the enchilada for a chile relleno. It's to die for!

Bakersfield has a lot of established restaurants of Mexican cuisine and El Sombrero has some of the best tacos. Their other food is great too, I just usually get their tacos. It's a small place and with restaurants only allowed at 25% capacity right now, you better get there at a good time.

It was great service . Food was served hot . Lunch specials includes beverage tea, coffee or soda. Lunch specials range from prices f $9.50 to approximately $12.50. Easy w/c accessible parking, w/c bathroom's , entrances in / out of bldg. and dining.

My favorite place for a Mexican meal. The Chile rellenos are really good, and of course the crunchy tacos. Yum. Love the rice. The beans are okay.

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. Grew up eating it. Service is always very quick. Not everyone loves the "salsa", it's more like a Chile sauce, but I personally LOVE IT! For something different order a flour taco!!!

Food and service are great. However prices are too high for the type of food. $8.50 for an al cart taco. Too much. Still love it 😀 ❤️

El Sombrero is and always will be - no joke - my favorite restaurant in the whole dang world. I have literally been eating here for over 34 years, since I was an infant. Hands down the most efficient, consistent, and consistently great Mexican food I have ever had the privilege of putting in my mouth. If I had constant access to their salsa, I would be addicted - a straight up salsa junkie. My only complaint is that they aren't open on Sunday!

M

Best in Bakersfield!! We have been going to El Sombrero for at least 47 years!! They have the best Chili Verde ever!! Their Special Burrito is the very best!! Also their Pizzadia is delicious as well!! And no other Mexican Restaurant has them!! Their salsa is great & their Margaritas!! 🙂 The owner is an amazing lady!! We love her, she always comes over to our table to welcome us!! Very personable!! This place is a must in my book!!! 10 stars!!

I've been coming here since 1973, and everything is pretty much the same as I remember except for the prices... IMO, they have the best tacos ever! Super fast service ! Love this place!

My family has been coming to El Sombrero for at least 10 years, we can always agree on going here for lunch or dinner. We all have our favorite items but we all love the nachos with beans and chorizo. The staff is friendly, the food is always hot and delicious and I'm so glad they survived the quarantine.

I grew up in Bakersfield and I don't ever remember going to this place. Recently, on a friend's recommendation, I gave it a try. The location is a little sketchy, just watch your surroundings. Inside, you will find a dark hallway full of pictures and articles. I didn't find any of the staff to be overly friendly, but the food made up for that. There is a pretty extensive menu, with lots of options. Combos, a la carte, they had it all. I'm a huge fan of ground beef in my Mexican food. They did NOT disappoint! The meal was excellent. I'm a big eater and ended up bringing home the last quarter of my meal.

My wife and I absolutely love this little Mexican restaurant. From the moment you walk in you are greeted instantly by the staff. It’s definitely a small restaurant however there seem to be a lot of tables. The chips are fresh and the salsa is absolutely delicious. I like adding the salsa on top of my rice. My wife and I typically order the enchiladas because it’s hard to pass them up they are so good. We like that they offer tortillas on the side if you wish. The prices are really good for what you get I definitely recommend El Sombrero!

This place never gets old or disappoints. Salsa is one of a kind compared to any other restaurant. Service is always exceptional and family oriented, I moved out of state, however every time I come back, someone always recognizes me. Overall my first place I choose to eat when I come home. #24 Flour and Chicken for life <3

B

All the employees seemed very friendly here. The food was real good and the price was better than expected. I personally really liked it but the family next to us did not because the menu didn't have pictures. But if you know typical Mexican food names then you should be good.

El Sombrero, a Bakersfield staple. I am a 45 year old, born & raised Bakersfield native. El Sombrero has been in Bakersfield all of my life. My parents took us there and in 2025, El Sombrero is still a thriving, delicious, place to sit down unwind and enjoy delicious Mexican Food along with quality customer service & hospitality (not the case, in all restaurants anymore). I am now a vegetarian but I still go from time to time and enjoy their cheese enchilada or chili relleno plate. Sorry, to read the one ⭐ experiences in some of the other reviews; but that is why, I am adding this one.

Great tasting mexican food. I had the carnitas in a different style and man they were good. My wife had the taco tamale and enchilada combo and loved it recommend it we will be going back when we pass through Bakersfield again.

Always hot, fresh, quick, consistent, and tasty. Never a bad experience in 30+ years of dining there. If I had a single complaint, and it's so small, I wish they went back to their old chips. They changed them a few years ago, and while the new one's are perfectly fine and get eaten and refilled numerous times Lol, I do miss the old ones.

C

At first glance, I was thinking of posting “SKIP!” However, the food and the service was great! We ordered the Chile Verde burrito and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how tender the pork was and packed with flavor! The chicken flautas were stuffed with real chicken! The simple side of rice is what had me rethink my first impression… it was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. Just over look the old and tired dining room and menus. The value is in the service and well prepared food. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures.

We had lunch/dinner here everything was great tasting even after my last visit here over 40 years ago. My mom used to be a waitress here back in the 70’s and my dad played softball and was sponsored by eel Sombrero. The original owner Ramero passed away but his 84 year old wife was still her and it is run by Ramiro’s family. We used to run around and play as children with the owners son, I don’t recall his name but I think it was Alex. Great memories. El Sombrero will always have a special place in my heart. All the memories just started to flash back as I say down and enjoyed my two hard shell shredded chicken tacos.

C

Their ground beef is seasoned just right and is not greasy. It is tasty on top of nachos, in tacos, or in enchiladas. Rice is fluffy and tasted fresh. The feel of this place is that it is family owned with an old hacienda decor inside. The waitress was very attentive and there was a constant flow of customers coming and going. Great food, great atmosphere, great wait staff, makes for a great experience. Definitely will be returning.

Good food. I've been going in there since the sixties. This is comfort food, It's always the same. And it's good. Why don't you go by for lunch?I'm not sure when it starts but it ends at two thirty p m. When people that work there some of them I've known for years. And they're good people.

I have been coming to this restaurant for decades but it had been a few years since my last visit, so I stopped by for lunch today. Everything was fantastic and just the way I remembered it! Service was truly exceptional- and it was busy. Chips and salsa refill appeared before I had finished the first basket (without me even asking!) and a passing server even picked up the straw wrapper off the table right after I opened it. When I ordered a glass of ice water, my server asked if I would like a lemon or lime with it. This kind of attention to detail is honestly missing from 95% of casual restaurants so if I could give six stars for service I would. The food was delicious and piping hot - if you like casual 20th century California style suburban Mexican food, this is the place for you. It’s different from what you can find in Mexico (melted cheese generously added to most dishes, for example) but quite beloved by those of us who grew up in Bakersfield. Today I enjoyed a chile verde burrito on a plate loaded with rice and refried beans. In the past I have also liked their hard shell tacos!

Still my favorite go-to mid level Mexican cafe. Food is solid, great service and the owner is beautiful and charming. I had my first beer here when I was 18 because my mother ordered it. So I have been eating their tacos and flautas since the 70's. Great great great.

M

A clean restaurant with a familia atmosphere. It seemed like the owner knew many of the costumers. The food was good, their chicken in particular was fantastic. It did feel a bit more expensive than other Mexican restaurants of the same tier that I have tried.

Good food very fresh. Food was very hot which keep the taste amazing. Service was above and beyond, never had such an attentive waitress she was always ahead of the game. Keep the drinks flowing and the chips and salsa endless.

C

I've been going here off and on for decades! The food is always delicious and the margaritas well made and prompt. They used to have older Mexican servers in traditional Mexican colorful dresses, and an old bartender dressed like a vaquero! (40 years ago!) They've traded those guys in for a younger set of employees. The place hasn't changed much over the years and I find that comforting.

C
Cosmic David

This place has fantastic customer service but i came here for the food and yeah i was pretty disappointed. I got their chile colorado, chorizo nachos and enchiladas. The nachos are very over priced. The enchiladas were decent but their chile colorado was bad... It had no flavor and they barely put any of the colorado salsa on my plate the meat was chunky beef not steak. I would recommend someone this place if they dont really care for authentic mexican food.

M
Maria Ott

My first time visiting this restaurant and I was honestly let down. The prices do not match the quality of what you get. I ordered the chilli rellenos with rice and beans which were more expensive here as compared to other restaurants. I do not mind paying more for something as long as the flavor and quality is there and sadly for the dish I ordered it was not worth it. The service was fine and the atmosphere was nice, but the food for me was not worth it.

B
Bobbie Roy

Food was good. They charged 14.00 for a regular Margarita that was absolutely hands down not the best at all. So next time I will pay their 4.75 for a beer instead. I just wanted to give a heads on the margaritas.

M

We LOVE El Sombrero! Great place, family owned, great service, consistently good food. We have been eating there for over 20 years. We faithfully supported through Covid, ordered for parties, etc. It’s been our go to place for a great, weekly dinner out. We ate there yesterday and noticed the prices have gone up considerably! What was a 2 item combo for $12 a year ago is now $16.75. Our weekly dinners there will now probably be cut down to once a month 😞. We totally understand about the prices of food and minimum wage going up but that’s quite a jump in prices. And the servers are the ones that are going to suffer because people aren’t going to tip as much as they have in the past.

J
Jose R Villegas

Plate are about 15.00 and up. They have good cleaning as soon as customers are done. Waitress was nice the place has a nice ambiance and relaxing. Would like the portions match the price. Other than that the food is real Mexican taste.

J
Joey Campos

Solid Mexican food. I couldn’t justify a higher rating due to the tortilla not tasting fresh and tasted like the el Guerrero packaged tortilla from the store. The a la cart combination burrito is not worth $9. Disappointing chicken, rice and tortilla and nothing else. The a la cart menu is pricey avoid and stick to the combination plates.

A
Ana Rocha

I ordered chile verde nachos, and the meat was chunky. The cheese was hard it didn't have anything else. I was very disappointed with this for a Mexican restaurant.

B
Bea Olmos

Quick lunch service, great servers. Food is bland and boring. There is no seasoning anywhere. The sombrero is expensive for the ingredient's quality. Basic mexican pantry food starting at $17, plus the drink means you'll pay $23 per person for the blandest meal you'll have.

M
Mahlik Britton

I went to this restaurant because friends wanted to go there. I was sooooo sorry I went. The atmosphere was dead-no music at all! The food was not so tasty. It seemed dried out and the waitress that helped us was very rude and ignored us half of the time. And best of all!!! Margaritas were very small, made with juice rather than mix and $12.50 each! $72 dollars PLUS tip for taquitos and 3 margaritas! I go to other much better restaurants during happy hour and get better food, much better ambience and served with a smile for $50 or less for 2 people! I was very disappointed and will not go back! Bad experience for sure! 🙈🙈🙈

Their price a few months ago, of a $9.99 combo plate, WITH a drink, was good (even though the portions are small).....but they now have a new combo price and same small portions for around $14 dollars?! On the weekends there's no special too! Then you pay $16-18 dollars with NO drink! I cant afford it and the portions aren't worth the price. The couple next to me was thinking the same thing....both ended up ordering a side of beans and rice to split, not coming back. Can't afford this place anymore.

The Obondigas soup had too many carrots, and tasted like they dropped the cumin bottle in the meatballs. The guacamole was packaged, and if it was not they should really be ashamed for making guacamole so bland and thin. I had the pot beans to go with the soup and they were actually really good. The salsa was tasty like they poured the pkg of taco seasoning in it. I was really hungry so I munched out on the delicious chips and hot salsa. I don't like wasting my money so I also ate the guacamole. It is not the same food I have been used to getting from my past visits to El Sombrero Restaurant...maybe they are compromising quality because the cost of food has gotten so expensive.

WARNING there is no alcohol in their drinks. I've been going to this place for 50 years. Had no complaints until now. It seems the customer has no voice and they don't care if you ever come back. Charged $31.00 for 2 daiquiris that had no liquor in it. The glass was filled with 1/2 whipping cream. Very unsatisfied with response I got from owner. If he cared enough about keeping us coming back I wouldn't be posting this.

Food is really bad, very American style. They put yellow cheese on everything, rice was dry and not tasty. The best thing was the water I had.

I visited this restaurant in the summer. Honestly, I don't see how everyone is saying this place has authentic Mexican food. Clearly, these people aren't Mexican themselves which baffles my mind because they think they have some sort of say in what is and isn't AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Everything tastes packaged, the food has very little flavor and makes up for it by being smothered in melted cheddar cheese. That being said, the service was good, don't get me wrong! This restaurant has wonderful people working for them! Just a shout out: the (male) bartender was quite charming and very good at his job.

Not a fan of it. Hard shell tacos not good at all. Salsa wasn't bad. Beans not good. Rice had no flavor. Only good thing was our server. She was great and attended to us very well.

Food at best was okay. Service was good. What the real issue is I asked for one shot of Patron and it was brought in two separate occasions. I told the waitress "I only want one" she said no problem. I said what are you gonna do with it and she responded by "I will put it back" and then she realized what she said "I will throw it away". I said leave it or throw it away but don't charge me. At the end of the bill they tried to charge a total of four shot of which I only drank two. Wow

Coffee was watery & they didn't want to make me another, stronger, cup. I had to choose something else to drink. My wife ordered 2 beef regular tacos, no rice, no beans, nothing extra. They charged us $20 for 2 tacos. Waitress was snotty, had an attitude when I asked for extra napkins. NEVER will I EVER come to this place again. They are complete ZEROS IN MY BOOK...

The meal did not meet expectations for authentic Mexican cuisine; it appeared to consist of commercially prepared, microwaved items served on restaurant plates. However, the service was commendable; beverages were consistently replenished, and staff diligently monitored our satisfaction.

Absolutely horrible! My boyfriend unfortunately likes this place and I have tried to because it USED to be good. It's not anymore. The quality of ingredients is awful, they have switched to generic stuff that's gross and bland. Cheese is so cheap it won't even melt! Just clumps up. They have messed my order and/or given me beyond subpar food the last 5 times I tried! That's right, 5! It was so bad, I threw it out 3 out of the 5 times! I tried to like it for nostalgia (& boyfriends sake) but whoever took it over years ago is just grinding it into dust. Do yourself a favor and go to any other of our many, many Mexican restaurants where you will be given the correct order of edible food!

I’m not sure what happened to this place but it used to be one of my top favorite restaurants. Had there last week and we were so disappointed. The service was bad the food was not good the prices are ridiculous overpriced. Sadly we will not be returning here. With so many other options in town they just can’t compete anymore. We ordered a two item combination plate- the rice was cold, beans were over salted enchilada has barely any cheese and the taco shell was broken it was top with a hard piece of tomato. The second plate was chicken fajitas- even more sad. The plate literally was full of rice and beans and what looked like a half of chicken breast with soggy vegetables. So disappointed.

Service and atmosphere was great, but the food is not authentic. It's was geared toward non Hispanic customers. I should of known I did not see 1 Hispanic in the restaurant beside the staff

Went here today 1/3/26, we decided to stop by and get some good food, at least the good food I remember. I used to go here with my dad and and it was great, I decided to take my wife and kids and it was flat out terrible. My wife got a chicken taco salad that seemed as if it were can chicken, it was a lot of water, my daughter got a ground beef taco salad and same thing, she did not like it and had a lot of water in it. My chili verde burrito was OK, cheese sucked, rice was bland and tasted old, my son got a chicken sandwich and he asked no lettuce, they brought it out with lettuce and the chicken was flat out disgusting. Honestly the worst experience I’ve ever had at a Mexican restaurant. To me that was $132 wasted. Definitely won’t ever return here. Service sucked too, everyone in there looked as if they were just miserable, no smiles no nothing. Super disappointed.. now we are all sitting at home with upset stomach’s.

I can’t even give this place a one star this place is horrible. The food was horrible. The mixed drinks were horrible customer service the manager or the owner had bad customer service. I will not recommend this place to no one. I don’t know how this place stays in business

Probably will never return. It was annoying that the server required my ID to order a margarita, it is clearly I am over 21. (Obviously can tell I’m an old woman-just saying.) But was disappointed very quickly - margarita was bland and was just “not it.” Food was NOT worth the time (microwaved out of a can and frozen entree - maybe) another disappointment. There’s a sense of small & cozy but this was “not it.” I was invited by a friend to this place or else I would have never tried since I’ve heard so many negative but I want to try a place myself so I can make my own judgement- well they were right, I agree to not recommend unless you’re looking for a depressing place. Completely a sad place - no Thanks!
