This place is so good and especially for the price of other places in Montauk! It was pretty busy and the food came out so quick. Hellen was the sweetest ever. We loved her so much! Definitely among some of the best customer service I have received.
Had breakfast with the family and it was excellent. The bacon was crispy, the orange juice was freshly squeezed, and the fruit was fresh. The crepes were delicious, as well as the pancakes. Service was friendly and helpful. Cash only, but ATM in front. Bonus is that Seinfeld was here with Jimmy Fallon a few years ago.
great food and service even in January. best tasting burger and fries. my friend had the eggs and bacon cooked perfect. prices not bad either. a must place to stop in Montauk very clean inside and abiding all the health rules
Went with my dog. Was seated quickly and my dog was given water in a clean fresh tin tray. The western omelette and home fries and rye toast tasted great.
Montauk in January is like a dream. So peaceful. Went in for breakfast. Received a warm and friendly welcome. We felt right at home. Ate at a leisurely pace. Chatted with the staff, who gave us information on what was open for dinner later. As an added bonus the food was great.
Classic local old-school diner with, yes, good Eggs Benedict—mine did come with poached eggs over Canadian Bacon and a nice English muffin, with tasty crispy home fries. Simple good coffee served here, no espresso. Very good friendly fast service.
John's is an old school diner/pancake house. Great pancakes and coffee. Nice atmosphere with plenty of locals stopping by. Friendly staff who didn't disappoint with the refills. Happy that we found them.
Great place. Very cozy and family oriented. We were helped by Helen. She greeted us with a warm welcome. The service was very quick and the food was delicious. Wonderful omelettes. Looking forward to visiting again.
There are no pictures in this posting as we were so hungry and the food was so good. This is an excellent breakfast and lunch restaurant where the locals eat. The food, the coffee and the service are excellent. Highly recommend! Bring cash, no credit 💳 cards.
I appreciated that John's has safety in mind! We witnessed the staff respectfully requeat that a group that wanted to come inside wear masks. The group refused and became belligerent, and the whole while the staff kept their cool! Cheers!! 6 stars! Great service and food!
I’m immune compromised and was struggling to find a good outdoor breakfast. Helen was so wildly kind and offered to serve us outside at the picnic table and was so kind and accommodating - and even brought us out five different kinds of hot sauce to try, all of which were delicious! The pancakes and eggs and everything else were delicious too! Thanks for the delight!
Not fancy, just good food for a reasonable price.
Food was very good. Little pricey. But expected for the area. The eggs Benedict was delish. Corned beef hash was yummy. Husband got a waffle and said it was a little doughy but good. If you go when it’s busy, it’s crammed and you’re sitting very close to everyone else, as well as it’s very loud. But again. Expected for place in this area. We come here every time we stay in montauk
Perfect size breakfast. Had the cornbread hash with scramble eggs, whole wheat toast, and country fries topped it off with water and coffee. Amazing! The wife had the strawberry crepes, and she loved them. Didn't have to wait long after we ordered and they were a bit busy. Great staff and service. Will be back when we can.
Came here for breakfast with my service dog in training, the staff were very respectful and I felt comfortable, even when my dog was very enamored with a particular waitress (kept trying to say hi to her, public access training). The pancakes were really good. We had them the day before as take out, but having them in person is far superior. They were soft and coffee was good. Got a glimpse of John himself! Seems like a well run and familial establishment. Highly recommend. We tipped well for their kindness.
What an excellent classic American breakfast we had, the sausages were especially delicious. So menu offers many options that all sound fantastic, and the room is great, luminous. Cash only but there’s an ATM close by
Staff was outstanding. They setup a table outside for us without any problems. Waffle with fresh fruit was great. Eggs Benedict was done very good. All our food came out as ordered. Was a very nice breakfast. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CASH!
I had the best western egg white omelet with spinach and tomatoes I've ever had. It came with a side of home fries. I don't know what they did to those potatoes, but delicious! Even the coffee was excellent. I dine here once a year when I make it to Montauk.
John's is great ! Love the breakfast. Also had lunch here a couple of times. They have an excellent corned beef sandwich. The staff is very kind and welcoming. It can get very busy during the summer, but that's because it's a good joint.
We ordered the spinach and feta omelette with avocado 🥑 with sour dough and biscuit breads, a delicious breakfast. The sitting outside was a great addition to the meal!
Amazing breakfast this chilly morning (3/5/17). Our server Trish was super friendly with an awesome smile. My eggs benedict was perfect and looked like it was prepared by a master chef. My fiancé said his western omelet with avocado was fantastic. Best to visit in Fall or almost Spring, before all of Manhattan spends their summer out here...
First time coming here.I love this place! Husband and I had breakfast.Menu was very good, alot of options. Food was fantastic everything was very fresh.Staff was nice.Full house when we're there.Prices were pretty reasonable. Will definitely come back.
Was here a few weeks ago Absolutely fenominal pancakes and service Wold deffinetly go back but only thing keeping from it is no vacation days left Also seems like its one of the few restaurants in the area that is not a tourist trap with the pricing Also side note probably will drive here again just for the hostess regretted not asking her out
Don’t ask me ask Jimmy Fallon and Jerry Seinfeld. Are you gonna get breakfast anywhere else in this town? No. Especially if you want great sausage links with your perfectly cooked OM eggs with heavenly hash brown potatoes, or Crepes that make the French jealous. The staff here is top notch, rivaled by no one. Gotta give it to the whole staff, an amazing group effort.
Me and my family were recently in the area and looking for a nice breakfast spot. The service was great and very prompt and the whole place just felt very homely. The good was quite good as well. I had a coffee and a waffle topped with strawberries. The strawberries were deliciously tart and the waffle had the perfect crisp exterior and fluffy interior. The others in my group had some french toast and some coconut pancakes and everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Definitely would recommend and would visit again!
I am basing my review on a very small amount of experience. However, John's Pancake House was excellent for me when I needed them. Summer, Aug. 2025 Brunch time on a Tuesday AM. I wanted to pre-order breakfast for me and my family for pickup. We had a busy day and needed to get us fed at our place before we head out. I tried to order from a few other highly rated, highly touted places. But all places I called did not pickup their phone. The # they listed for orders. App delivery route didn't help. Some places were listed as "Unavailable" John's did pickup my call. I only ordered a bunch of egg sandwiches and kids type meals - but they were really excellent! They were fast, very friendly, food very tasty & clean. And most important: They can answer a phone!
A no-frills pancake house that gets it right. The food is consistently good, and my kids can’t get enough of the silver dollar pancakes—they’re a hit every time. For me, the fresh avocado and salsa on the side of an omelette, paired with a good cup of coffee, is the perfect way to start the day. The atmosphere is bright, airy, and welcoming, making it an easy spot to relax and enjoy a meal. Simple, satisfying, and family-friendly—what more could you ask for?
Very good Local breakfast spot in Montauk, NY. We ordered CORNED BEEF HASH with TWO EGGS & Toast and the IRISH OMELET, both were delicious and fresh. Be aware this place is CASH ONLY. If your looking for good food, good service, and good portions, then I would definitely recommend John’s Pancake House!
A must visit! The pancakes are true to their fame. Delicious, fresh, and tasty. The omelette is hearty. I got 'John's famous pancakes with fruits' . Portions are perfect for a person. Most dishes are around $10-15 each. This is a cash only place! The ATM next door charges $4 fees so I suggest keeping the cash handy. The tables are tightly spaced. At 11 am ish on weekends, you will have 20 mins wait time. Worth every minute of wait, worth every penny! I can't wait to visit them again. Update : 3 years later - it is as good as ever.
Delicious food, fast service, homey atmosphere! Prices were very reasonable considering we're in Montauk. Pictured are the crepes with Nutella and bananas. It was beyond delicious 😋 Looking forward to returning here on our next trip. Also the staff was very nice and efficient. Highly recommend
CASH ONLY * My travel companion and I enjoyed our lunch at John's very much. We were not aware that it was cash only, so glad we had cash on us. I had the quiche and home style potatoes, and my friend had the breakfast platter with eggs, bacon, and pancakes (so fluffy!) with an extra side of home style potatoes because we didn't want to share...they were that good! The coffee was good and strong, and the waitress took great care of us. Soup is not available in the summer. The location was clean and busy, and the prices were reasonable. Worth a stop in.
I came here for breakfast twice during my stay in Montauk and I really liked the food and service. The staff is friendly and the food comes out fast. Also, they make a very good cup of coffee. The place overall looks a bit old fashioned as opposed to their competition across the street. They really give a lot for your money and the prices are very reasonable. Be forewarned that this place is cash only. I will definitely come back the next time I visit Montauk.
Who doesn’t love perfectly crisp bacon! I ordered the no 2 special. 3 pancakes, 2 eggs and a handful of perfect bacon. The pancakes were a little bit on the thin and dry side. I prefer pancakes, light, fluffy and moist. Husband got the French toast and gobbled it up. Place is Cash only.
This is the pancake house on the block that I will admit, had the better food and more diverse offerings, especially with savory options like omelettes. The atmosphere is a bit darker and more like an old school diner vibe. Less frills, but still good service. Obviously, bring CASH
John's Pancake house!! A popular staple and thankfully open in the off season. It's basically an old school diner but has several pancake specials. It's good food at fair prices. Nothing super exceptional but still a worthwhile spot for breakfast/lunch. Banana pancakes had bananas right in the flapjack. It was tasty even without syrup! My Judy Omelette was great (Sausage, tomato, avocado) and huge.
This was the better of the two Pancake house on main street. There is also Anthonys pancake house which we did not care too much for especially its horrible coffee. Johns pancake were great huge portions with eggs and bacon or saugage. This is a normal mom and pops type diner with great comfort food.
Atmosphere, yes. Cool hostess, either owner maybe, yes. Spinach & feta omelette, and my rye toast w/butter, yes. My friends steak & eggs, yes. Service, good. Home potatoes, awful and literally cold when they hit the table. So come and enjoy, just don’t get the home potatoes. Ate before I remembered to take photo, all that’s left is the potatoes. 🤪
Unpretentious, solid breakfast and lunch spot. Very fast service. Solid menu with an array of choices that will satisfy the entire family. Prices are generally reasonable. Cash only. Good seating options with plenty of booths and counter service. Nice light filled room with a nautical theme.
Most expensive diner I have ever been in. And it is just a small town diner
Cash only. Food is decent. But $4 for a cup of coffee is ridiculous. Especially since it is served in chipped mugs that hold about 4 ounces. They really need to invest is repairing/upgrading the boothes, tables and chairs. $45 for breakfast for 2 in an outdated diner is a bit much. Even in this environment of making up for covid losses.
This place is a Montauk institution. They make good pancakes and crepes. They have all the other breakfast options as well. We've never been there for lunch. It's an okay place - kind of dirty (the ceiling fans and light fixtures need a good scrubbing), but the area behind the counter seems clean enough. Cash only, no cards. Be prepared to wait for a table.
Terrible service. Sat before 2 tables and they were served first?? Their eggs benedict... um.. how do you have it on your menu of you don't poach eggs?? Haven't been here in a while (new ownership??) and usually go to Anthony's across the street. Not going to complain about the prices as others have because we are in Montauk duh. However, being upset we weren't served first (or second)I was going to leave 2 stars, but upgraded to 3 since the food was quite tasty and that's a big plus.
Good friendly service. Food was nothing special. Ordered a wrap with no tomatoes, you could tell they realized after they made the wrap so they took it apart and tried to take out all the tomatoes but missed some plus the wrap was falling apart. Warp had very little chicken inside. Corned beef hash was tasty and eggs were cooked well.
*Cash Only* There are many places in Montauk that deal in cash only. Friendly staff and servers. Food was ok but it's REALLY overpriced, like everything in Montauk. However, some things are worth it and some aren't. This meal was in No Way worth $65 there were also chocolate chip pancakes. The kids chocolate milk was almost $5 alone. Honestly I had wished I went to the market and bought my own food to cook back in my kitchen at the hotel.
Paid $20 for a handful of spring mix, a few slices of unripe tomato, 3 ounces unseasoned grilled chicken, half avocado, and a packet of ken’s dressing… other people in the party seemed slightly more impressed with the food.
Irish omelette was a bit greasy, coffee was good. Service was on par but not so sure a basic cup of coffee should cost $5. I get it that everyone deserves to make a living and the charm of montauk is in these establishments that have existed forever. But perhaps they need to renovate the seats held together with duct tape if they’re charging high end prices.
The initial experience of this place looked great from the street. It’s nice and homey inside, but a little bit on the dirty/run down side. The booth we sat in was in pretty bad shape with springs popping through making for a rally uncomfortable seat. A bus girl came up to the table immediately and asked if we wanted water to which we replied yes, only to have her scolded in front of us by the manager/front register person for “not busing enough tables fast enough. The food came out pretty quick and was decent, but either the chef doesn’t know the difference between a well fried egg and over easy or the waiter put the order in wrong. The place was (ok) and we wanted to give them a try but we’d probably go across the street to anthony’s next time.
Very disappointing experience. The pancakes were rubbery, not soft. The bacon had to be sent back (we asked for “very crispy” and instead it oinked at us when it came out). Worst was the hostess/cashier having a loud conversation with a couple friends who came in to eat. I’m all for a comfortable environment but at least make a good pancake.
Food was mediocre to bad, especially for the price ($70 for brunch for 4). Home fries were under seasoned, and the omelette was tiny. Corned beef hash, pancakes, and bacon were okay. Overall worse than an iHop or even a good Denny’s.
Foods good but outrageous prices and cash only. $100+ for simple breakst basics for a party of 4 is a little silly. Similar to better quality food and service at more affordable prices at John papas in EH.
Was excited to go...upon arrival we were "greeted" by someone who was short with us when we requested to sit in the sun at a picnic table...not friendly or happy to have our business. Cash only...we went to Anthony's across the street who were happy to have us and the food and service were amazing! Ps we are really good tippers because we so respect local business and restaurant workers.
The people here are racist. Me and my friends came to visit the lighthouse and after we wanted something to eat. So we came into this place to eat, usually there’s always gotta be someone to great us and sit us down. The employees working there just looked at us and kept on working. I work in a restaurant and you can never treat a guest like that, no matter what race. The service was terrible, it was cash only. We asked for separate checks and this one nice lady went to ask the manager, she looked at us and with an attitude she said no. We paid but didn’t leave no tip. As soon as we walked out, the manager came out and said that we didn’t tip our waiter. I’m a waiter too and you don’t chase people telling them you didn’t tip. That’s very unprofessional and it shows you that racism still exist. This is America you guys!
This is the most disgusting restaurant, if you even want to call in that, in the world. My husband, sister, friend and 9 month old decided to stop here for breakfast on our way out of town. We were seated, we ordered our food and the food arrived. Great minus the fact that there was no air conditioning. Whatever. The food was delicious and as we’re finishing up, my husband notices this huge red stain across his really nice shirt. Come to find out that it’s the edge of the table rubbing off. I took a napkin and rubbed it again the edge of the table and the napkin was practically filled with red. My husband and I were so upset so I asked to speak the manager. The gentleman asked what it was regarding and we told him. He went in the back, told the manager the story and came back and said that the manager will give us the money for my husbands shirt if we give him a receipt. Like sure, let me pull it out of my back pocket. All of a sudden the manager walks past our table, takes a glance and walks back into the kitchen so we said, the manager can’t come out and talk to us? He said that the manager told him to take care of it. Long story short, the manager came over. Wasn’t even the slightest bit apologetic about what happened to my husbands shirt. We’d asked him to comp the bill instead. He did so and then said, don’t ever come back to my restaurant. Obviously then an ensued where we were called trash, that we tried to come in for a free meal and all sorts of horrible things. So unprofessional, everyone that works there looks like they haven’t showered in weeks because everyone is sweating so bad. My guy, your employees have to wear masks. Be a gentleman and put the air on for them. The woman at the front, whoever she is, is out of her mind. Calling us all kinds of names, breading us, etc. No wonder it was dead. The food was great but the service and environment was just disgusting. STAY AWAY!!!!!!
I'm 59 years old and have been coming here for 55 years. No more. The cashier who I hate to say looks like an ogre is so damn rude to everyone wobbles around yelling at the service. As for the food I got the pancake bacon a combo $15 three very small strips of undercooked bacon eggs are not as I ordered and the pancakes keep shrinking and shrinking every year they are not the same size as McDonald's pancakes. If that was not bad enough my wife and I both ordered iced teas. Kind of pissy tasting they were six freaking dollars each for iced tea at a diner. Go elsewhere folks get your breakfast at m&r deli or Goldbergs or the Montauk bake shop and save yourself a lot of money $6 iced teas what
Says steak house on the menu but lunch had 1 steak sandwich and it was bland, chewy, and lacking flavor. French fries tasted like fish. Also they don’t allow strollers inside even tho it was empty so instead we sat outside in the sun with no umbrellas with kids. Maybe we could have made a stink about it but overall, it was a bad family lunch and I won’t be returning.
Food was standard breakfast fare. Most of the staff was Rude. Our waitress was sweet and attentive BUT another waitress told us another table was waiting and took our high chair from away from the table while my husband was tending to our son, and I was drinking my coffee. There were many other seating options available and no one waiting, and others “done” eating. She rushed for us no reason. And then told us “you get what you give.” I asked you’re going to speak like that to customers who just paid? Our only responsibility as patrons is paying for our meal. What a poor way to start a Saturday.
I wish I would be able to put negative stars. I don't really know what was worse, the service or the food. When entering this sorry excuse for a restaurant, we were met with stares as opposed to greetings. We stood for about 2 minutes before a waitress abruptly stated, " you can sit anywhere you want", saying it in a way which appeared annoyed and unpleasant....as though WE were supposed to know to seat ourselves? Advice to the owner...maybe put a sign up like many other establishments so there is no confusion? Just a thought. So we sit down, wait about 15 minutes to even be acknowledged. The waiter comes over, no smile, no greeting...another worker looking annoyed or just like he hates his job. We place our order which included steak and eggs, eggs Benedict and some silver dollar pancakes. While sitting there we couldnt help but notice that it seemed the whole staff had attitudes, was unpleasant and lacked some good ol customer service skills, which in my opinion is a must to have in the restaurant business. Not a people person, hate your job? Get a new one because people do not come to sit and enjoy a meal only to experience this. It seemed we were not the only ones there with this sentiment as we sat and listened to the table next to us complain about the same thing. After about 30 minutes, out comes the food. Needless to say, not impressed at ALL. Bland as can be eggs Benedict, overdone and tasteless steak and the pancakes were nothing to rave about (isn't this a pancake house?!?!). We didnt even finish the food and pretty much just wanted to get out. Out comes the bill and $60 for terrible service, tasteless food and such a negative atmosphere. If this place is going for the award for worst spot in Montauk, they have my vote. For anyone that is looking for some great service and quality food, do NOT come here. Save your money and your time.
Worst restaurant experience of my life. Went here Sept 15, 10am with my elderly parents. Went in to ask how long for a table and was told one was available now. As I waved to my parents who were 50 feet away, my table was given away because "my party wasn't here". In disbelief, I argued my case,to no avail, to an incredibly rude and obnoxious woman at the door. This miserable person is in the wrong line of work. Thankfully, we had a great breakfast across the street at Anthony's pancake house. 0 stars.
They are severely understaffed and therefore the staff is incredibly rude and in a hurry. When the server first came we asked her two questions about the food which she answered very shortly, then we told her that we need 5 minutes and she said ok. Less than 5 minutes later we signalled that we were ready, which she acknowledged, but then never came to our table for another 25 minutes at which point we left
I visit Montauk 3 times during the summer seasons and make sure to stop by John’s Pancake House….will not any longer! The woman behind the cash register is NASTY! Was asked to wait 10-15 mins for a table with 3 friends, no problem, time passed and a group of 5 walked in and was preparing their menu’s. I kindly said Miss we were next and she went off saying these were menus for someone else and I responded no problem and please there is no need for that attitude and that I am a paying customer and she goes “you aren’t a paying customer right now” and I said I come here every time I visit the island and she goes, “good for you”. Am I doing you a favor by coming? If she’s the owner, god bless, never going there again and will only go to Anthony’s which always has a massive line but is also 10x cleaner and nicer. If she’s not the owner, I hope they are reading these comments as she is the main reason they have a below 4 rating. Disrespectful!!!!!
Not a family friendly venue. Got declined a table due to staff not allowing strollers. They said was due to restaurant being too small however they were at 10% capacity with ample space. Infant asleep in stroller and too young for high chair.
My husband and I were there on Wednesday., July 23, 2023 for breakfast…We didn’t realize it was cash only when we went to pay….The woman that was there who looked like an unmade bed was so rude and nasty the way she spoke to my husband…Telling him if you read the signs you would know we only accept cash…. My husband wanted to talk to John who was there…told him it wasn’t worth it…Just wanted him to know that she has the personality of a snail…. Will be having our breakfast at Anthony’s Pancake House… Where the hostess and servers are pleasant and dressed neat and clean….
Not use to write reviews but I’m gonna do it this time !! Just went to this place to have breakfast with my husband and my baby I ordered pancakes and crepes…. The pancakes were terrible; flat and dry and the crepes were hard like if it was old. I didn’t eat the creps or the pancakes and the women up front who was very rude and nasty didn’t offer me something else a discount or anything she just charged me for everything and told me that it was up to me if I ate or not my breakfast. Not a single server asking how our food was. Never again in this place, first time and also the last time. Horrible
I used to come to this place all the time. I love eating the waffles and corn beef hash. It’s very good. But today Thursday 7/22/2021 I ordered my usual corn beef hash and a Belgian waffle I went there to go pick it up and it came out being more than i usually pay so I looked at the receipt and it was for corn beef hash and egg and the waffle I told the lady at the register who is new and I never seen before was very rude and told I should have told her it was a side of corn beef hash and I said that is not my job to tell you that you should know corn beef hash doesn’t come with the waffle so of course it’s a side and on top of it she added egg I didn’t ordered egg so I’m wondering how did you cooked the egg if I didn’t ordered it or asked for it. See I don’t eat eggs. So I’m waiting for correct my order and she’s looking at me like I grew another head or speaking a foreign language. I’m not paying for something I didn’t ordered. I asked for a manager and she told me there’s wasn’t any manager there. My money is as good as anyone else that’s come in that restaurant. So I was fed up and I just left the food there. I worked very hard for my money for not to give it away to people that disrespected me or my money. And it was a white female in her thirties that wouldn’t give me her name at the register.
My Son and his family, including their 6 months-old baby, visited this establishment the week before Memorial Day weekend. Although the restaurant was slow and had plenty of available tables, they encountered an unpleasant experience with a staff member. Upon entering, a staff member quickly approached them and informed them that they could not be seated due to having a stroller with them. However, they noticed another table with a baby stroller already seated and still were not allowed to be seated after bringing this to attention. This raises the question - could this have been a act of discrimination? If u are planing to visit the establishment with a baby or stroller, I recommend calling ahead to confirm if accommodation can be made or consider taking your business elsewhere..
I visited John’s Pancake House about a year ago, so I decided to come back this time after watching the sunrise. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment compared to my first visit. There were two female servers, but neither of them ever checked on us. no one asked if we needed more coffee or if the food was okay. It felt like we were completely ignored. On top of that, when paying by card, they charged an extra fee without saying anything. We could have paid cash if they had told us. And to make it worse, at the end they told us the tip wasn’t included and asked us to leave cash for it, even though we didn’t receive any real service.
