One of the best restaurants in Monterey/Del Rey Oaks. Great service, very friendly staff, and food is always delicious. Price is on the high side but totally worth it. You don’t want to miss their giant pretzel with cheese. The steak selection is great and cooked to perfection. Desserts are good too. I’ll recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Monterey for a special occasion. A+

We recently had a family dinner at Tarpy’s Roadhouse, and I can confidently say it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a long time. From the warm, rustic ambiance to the phenomenal food and excellent service, everything about the evening was memorable. Tarpy’s has this welcoming, lodge-like feel that sets the tone as soon as you walk in. The stone walls, dim lighting, and cozy interior make it feel like a hidden gem tucked away in Monterey. It’s upscale without being stuffy—perfect for both date nights and relaxed family dinners like ours. We were seated promptly despite it being a busy evening, and our server greeted us with a big smile and genuine enthusiasm. She made us feel right at home from the start, and her knowledge of the menu made ordering a breeze. Now, let’s talk about the food—because wow. I ordered the steak and shrimp, and it was absolutely divine. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare—tender, juicy, and full of flavor with just the right sear on the outside. The shrimp were plump, buttery, and seasoned just right, adding a delightful surf-and-turf balance to the plate. The sides complemented the dish beautifully, and the presentation alone had me excited before I even took a bite. My son went with the Kobe burger, and I have to admit, I was a little jealous when it arrived. You could tell just by looking at it that it was going to be good—but once he took a bite, his reaction said it all. The burger was thick, juicy, and packed with flavor. The bun was soft but sturdy enough to hold it all together, and the toppings were fresh and thoughtfully chosen. I managed to steal a bite, and I totally understand why he barely looked up from his plate the entire time. We also took full advantage of the drink menu, which was impressive. I went with their take on an Old Fashioned, and it was perfect—strong, smooth, and not overly sweet. My partner ordered a floral gin cocktail that was light and refreshing, and even the non-alcoholic drinks for the kids were crafted with care. It’s rare to find a place where the bar service is just as good as the food, but Tarpy’s delivered on both fronts. The real cherry on top, though, was the service. Our server was attentive without being overbearing, gave great recommendations, and kept everything running smoothly. She made us feel like we were her only table even though the restaurant was busy. The rest of the staff—from the host to the busser—was equally professional and friendly, which speaks volumes about the culture at Tarpy’s. We finished off the night with a shared dessert—their famous bread pudding with whiskey caramel sauce. It was rich, warm, and comforting, the perfect way to end an already fantastic meal. If you’re anywhere near Monterey and looking for a place to enjoy high-quality food in a beautiful setting, Tarpy’s Roadhouse should be at the top of your list. The steak and shrimp was flawless, the Kobe burger was a hit with our son, the drinks were spot-on, and the service tied it all together. We’ll absolutely be back.

Foods were excellent, love the environment around the place, staffs were generous. I and my friends visited last April for our vacation, it was the good start of the day. Soup was umami, ribs was very tender but I think it somewhat soaked with the sauce, maybe reduced a bit was perfect, steak was that I ordered and it was perfect medium-rare, although I love how you cooked the little cabbage so much, salmon steak from my friend - so so good. Overall it was one of the great meal here.

Came here for my niece's 40th with two young boys. They were accommodating, food was great, service was very, very good. All in all a great experience. I'm on a very restricted diet for health reasons and they were happy to grill a plain chicken beat for me. Niece had short ribs, nephews had a burger and kids meatloaf and they ate it all up. I'd definitely come back when in Monterey!

Visited on Sunday for Happy Hour before the crowds for Car Week begins. The ambiance is fantastic, with options for outdoor, indoor, or private dining. It feels upscale yet approachable, striking a perfect balance. Live music on the patio as well. Happy Hour 7 days a week! Free parking in a dedicated lot is a huge plus for the area—no circling for street parking or paying for expensive tourist lots. The bar food was solid, though we didn’t try a full dinner. Negative Review for Tarpys Roadhouse I recently celebrated my 43rd birthday with my family at Tarpys Roadhouse in Monterey, drawn in by its glowing reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what we expected, and I feel compelled to share our disappointment. Positives: To start on a positive note, the food arrived quickly, and the atmosphere was quaint and welcoming. The host was courteous and even moved our reservation up without hesitation, which we appreciated. Disappointments: However, the positives ended there. We were excited to start with the calamari, a restaurant staple, but it was so oily that my husband and I could only manage a couple of pieces before deciding to let our kids have the rest. For our entrées, we ordered a variety: the kids' ribs, a recommended Kobe burger, the special paella of the night, and a short rib. Here’s where the real disappointment began: Kobe Burger: It arrived extremely dry with a burnt bun. My daughter took one bite and refused to eat any more. We realized we hadn’t been asked how we wanted it cooked. When we asked our server, Tricia, to return it, she took it back politely but made no effort to resolve the situation or offer my daughter an alternative. Kids' Ribs: While my son managed to eat some of the ribs from the kids' menu, they were dry and not enjoyable for him. Paella: This was particularly disappointing. The base tasted cheap and overly saucy, with only two shrimp and a few clams and mussels. I found crushed shells in my bite, which was alarming, especially since clams and mussels should open during cooking. When I tried to remove the shell, our server came by but showed no interest in my experience—just handed me another napkin. Short Rib: This was the worst short rib I’ve ever had. It tasted like it had been cooked in a bland crockpot. We barely touched it, and when Tricia came to clear our plates, she didn’t even inquire about our meals or offer any solutions for my daughter, who was left without a meal. Manager Interaction: Before leaving, I asked to speak with the manager, Rory. He acknowledged our daughter's burnt hamburger and expressed regret that we had such a poor experience. However, I was left frustrated that he hadn’t approached us during our meal to check in. He promised to give us a credit on our bill, which he never followed through with. Conclusion: We left Tarpys feeling completely unsatisfied, having spent $200 on a meal that we barely ate. The service was lackluster, the food was terrible, and the manager’s lack of follow-through was disappointing. In my opinion, this was one of the poorest dining experiences we’ve had, and I cannot recommend Tarpys Roadhouse for any special occasion.

Update october 2025, hostess asked us if we wanted to be seated in the shady porch area or the bigger out side area. We wanted the bigger outside area. She then walked us to a table in the very bright sun. (There were several tables in this area that had some shade) she then walked us to one with shade and said "this is shade, shade shade shade shade!) In a condescending attitude. We left. Changing by very high stars given before to 1s for over the top rudeness. Older reviews follow... Very fun and peaceful place. Relaxing. Lots of great choices. Nice eclectic choice of drinks. Update for 8 31 25... AMAZING food and atmosphere... best I've had here. Thanks! Only negative is that the entree came out like 2 minutes after the appetizer. Somethings going to get cold. But the food was amazing.

I'm changing my review from five stars to one star. We’ve been regular customers here, ordering at least two to three times a month. Unfortunately, our most recent experience was extremely disappointing and, more importantly, unsafe. After bringing our order home, I reheated the chicken dish in the microwave for 60 seconds to warm it up. Despite that, when I cut into the chicken, it was still very raw in the center. It is very concerning to think how undercooked it must have been before reheating. Serving chicken in this state is a serious health and safety risk that should never occur in any restaurant kitchen. When we called to report the issue, the staff member we spoke with showed little concern. We were told a manager was unavailable and that the only remedy they could offer was a refund for the single dish. Considering the gravity of the situation, this response was inadequate and unprofessional. A sincere apology could have gone a long way. As much as we have enjoyed this restaurant in the past, this experience has left us questioning their quality control and commitment to customer safety. I hope Tarpys takes this feedback seriously and improves their quality control, but unfortunately, we won’t be risking it again.

We went for our son's birthday and I regret it. The service was so slow. We ordered the pretzel which was the best thing of the afternoon. Then the server didn't come back to get our order till we were done with the pretzel. I finished my water and soda and it took a while to get a refill. The server brought me a soda refill and then asked if I wanted more water. We hadn't even got our food. Why would you even ask if I wanted more water. The food was way subpar. Then my son ate a piece of egg yolk which got stuck in the back of his throat and he kept coughing. No staff bothered to see if we were ok. The couple sitting next to us was more worried about it than the staff. My son hardly ate the pasta which was odd as he likes pasta. I tried it and it was watery and bland. I make better white sauce at home. The chicken in the salad was over cooked and dry. The pasta with prawns felt wasn't that good either. It was like the pasta with the sauce didn't go together. I had wanted the pork ribs but they were out which you would think that wouldn't be the case to start the weekend. Then a server brought out a sorbet as we were there for my son's birthday. She came up behind him and said, "I heard there was a birthday" and set it down. She didn't sing or wish him a happy birthday. Just dropped it off and left before we could even say thank you. I'm not sure when we will be back to Monterrey but we will never be back to Trapy's Roadhouse that's for sure. We got better service at Chick-fil-A breakfast and they gave him a cookie and sang happy birthday to him.
