we absolutely loved all of the small plates at kosho!! the service was INCREDIBLE we had the best time our server Joyous and the rest of the crew. we loved the chicken yakitori and especially the garlic noodles!! we had amazing drinks, the no. 9 was so nice i had it twice. the service and atmosphere was incredible here, we will definitely be back 🥰🥰
Incredible food and staff! I tried the edamame hummus, salmon crudo, unagi crispy rice, and the shrimp skewer — everything was presented beautifully and tasted even better! So much flavor and perfect portion sizes. We ended the night with the ube banana pudding and it was devoured before I could even snap a pic. Will be going back very soon!!! (Also… this sake was fantastic and came in the cutest little juice box!! So fun!!!)
Best Asian spot my daughter and I have been too in a long time. Shabu was absolutely amazing, the wagyu short rib was fresh and tender, the veggie plate was full of options! Pickled cucumbers and the edamame hummus for starters, no leftovers. Restaurant was clean and lovely atmosphere. Service was superb, Jane is a rockstar, made our experience completely memorable. See you again soon for sure.
I love great food. I search for it on purpose. Last week, I got an inside look at the creative genius behind Kosho, and let me tell you, the chef's descriptions didn't even do the food justice. The flavor profiles will blow you away. The location feels very trending, with the Ole Smokey Distillery just down the street. The vibe was definitely low-key cool, probably following the cue from the chef who is a laid-back surfer guy from California. Parking was easy peasy, even for our F250. In Nashville, just expect to pay a lot for parking. This one was cheaper than Lower Broadway. Koshō’s the kind of spot you tell your friends about like it’s a secret. The flavors are wild in the best way — those shrimp garlic noodles? Next level. It’s cool, creative, and seriously tasty without trying too hard.
This is a great new Japanese restaurant with relaxed vibe and impeccable food to accompany it. All of the staff were fantastic. Many traditional Japanese dishes with a tasteful modern flare to them. I’ll be back in a heartbeat.
My husband took me and our daughter here to celebrate Mother’s Day and I couldn’t have been happier. I knew we were in for a treat when I tasted my cocktail. We ordered edamame hummus, which our 16 month old devoured, and 3 entrees including pork bao, garlic noodles and Korean clams. I personally really enjoyed the clams but would suggest ordering a side of rice to go with it. Our favorite was the ube banana pudding with its subtle sweetness. Service was amazing throughout and we appreciated everyone being so kind to our toddler. We will definitely be back!
We had the BEST meal at Kosho tonight! The service was 10/10, the ambiance was 100/10 (highly recommend requesting the “bar nook”), and the food was out of the world delicious! We had the miso pork belly yakatori, the drunken mushrooms, the garlic noodles, the salmon crudo, and cucumber dish, and rice— it was all so, so good. I cannot wait to go back!
I recommend kosho to everyone! It’s one of my favorite places to eat in town. Food and service is always great and they stay bumping good tunes at a very respectful volume. Nashville has a tendency to sleep on the good small places while the big corporate restaurants thrive serving mediocre food. Let’s not do that. EAT AT KOSHO
We loved this place. The seared hamachi and salmon crudo starters were the highlight. Garlic noodles with shrimp, mushrooms and shabu I would get again. Would skip the yakitori chicken and try lamb next time. Short rib shabu was shareable considering all the other hot items we ordered. Service was attentive and friendly at the kitchen bar. Quality of the meats as expected. I've been to their San Diego locations and the quality here was just as good. They have QR codes for partial parking validation in the lot next door and across the street. $10 to park for 2 hours want terrible. Metropolis owned lot and they are criminals so be careful. If there is street parking on the adjacent street grab that.
We found Kosho on a whim and we are so glad we did. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed. The wait staff were kind, knowledgeable and guided us through the process perfectly. We ordered Shabu and absolutely were blown away with how amazing it was. Every ingredient was fresh and delicious! The Shabu process was also a fun interactive way to have dinner. We finished the meal with the most amazing banana pudding I’ve ever had. Every bite of food was spectacular. This is a MUST try in Nashville !
Flew in from Texas and I had the pleasure of dining in their downstairs area—comfortable, beautiful, and cozy. I believe I was serviced by Cole and Victoria (I apologize if the names are incorrect) and they were a delight and so happy to help. The cucumber sunomono was fresh and had a slight spice to it. The Chashu Pork Bao Buns were soft and tender and the yuzu slaw was probably the best part! And for dessert, my favorite was the Ube Banana Pudding — I can’t even describe how happy that made me. I do slightly wish there was a bit more nilla wafer in it but that’s not a big deal to me at all. For drinks, I had the #16 and #12. While they were both delicious, #12 is especially unique for the sweet drink lovers; the kiwi foam is an absolute standout. Overall, would come here again if I visit nashville in the future!
My husband and I are on our Anniversary trip for the weekend. We drive from out of state, first time in Nashville. Today was our last day and wanted something close to the Air BNB we were staying at. Literally last minute found Kosho, and the experience was 10/10. Both Wills were working tonight and Nick(from New Hampshire) ended up being our server. He was AMAZING! He walked us through the whole process since we had 0 idea of what to do. He was completely down to earth and made the experience amazing!
From the moment we stepped through the door at koshō we were greeted with smiles and promptly sat. The vibes were high throughout the restaurant and the food smelled absolutely delicious! We knew it would not disappoint. I have to start with the attention to detail when it comes to service though…they are absolutely on another level. From the hosts to the kitchen staff, I have never experienced such thoughtful hospitality! Not only did the manager Karson chat with us at length making us feel like family but the chef also came by our table and sat with us for quite some time! They were both so kind and made the experience truly unforgettable. While we would come back for just the service alone the food was just as amazing!! We ordered the bao buns, chicken & salmon skewers, garlic noodles (MUST TRY), & some gorgeous cocktails (they juice everything fresh in house daily!) We were so beyond impressed by every aspect of this restaurant and are so thrilled to have it in the neighborhood! We are sure to be their new regulars & could not recommend it enough!
Loved my dinner at Kosho. I was in town for work and I’m glad I caught this Nashville gem while looking for a spot to have dinner. The vibe and atmosphere were super nice and chill. The service was amazing. All the three dishes I tried were spot on. Nice interpretation of something simple like gyozas. Steamed but then finished in a frying pan to get this nice crispy layer on top. The garlic noodles were spot on. Generous portion and the flavors were perfect. The mango coconut panna cotta, prepared right in front of you, was a fresh dessert to finish up the meal. 100% suggested! Thank you for the awesome dinner!
So glad we found this gem before it gets packed! The Ahi Toast was the top dish of our meal. What a glorious combination of flavors and textures! Unagi and Crispy Rice was another standout dish. The Wagyu Croquettes just didn't wow us like other reviewers. Both the Garlic Noodles and Ginger Bok Choy were swimming in their respective spices, much to our enjoyment. And as everyone raves, service was super friendly, prompt and kind. We're definitely coming back! I've included pictures of the current menu, to help those on the fence to decide to eat here. (note - the Ahi Tuna dish comes with 3 toasts, but we inhaled two before remembering to take a picture :) )
In Nashville for an art festival and stumbled on this little gem. The food and service were top notch. Met one of the partners who shared his story and passion on a plate. Highly recommend! Great food, great concept and impeccable service! Treat yourself and someone special!
Amazing food, excellent service in lovely restaurant setting. Best we’ve had on our 3 week tour of Nashville, Memphis and NOLA. Great menu. Lots of interesting choices. Ahi toast, garlic noodles, wagyu croquettes were all delicious. Fab cocktails made by Victoria. We hope to visit again before we go home. If you’re in Nashville- you have to check this out!
Nashville has a stunning new addition to its culinary scene with Kosho, a Japanese-inspired restaurant that strikes the perfect balance between modern sophistication and intimate warmth. Whether you’re gathering with friends or celebrating something special, Kosho delivers an experience that feels both elevated and inviting. Executive Chef Partner Nick Aguilar has crafted a menu that’s creative, beautifully presented, and absolutely crave-worthy. Highlights include the rich and savory garlic noodles, tender and flavorful special dumplings, a silky edamame hummus, refreshing cucumber sunomono, and indulgent wagyu croquettes with a crispy golden finish. From the thoughtful service to the sleek, welcoming atmosphere, every detail at Kosho feels intentional. Chef Aguilar has truly hit a home run—this is a spot you’ll want to return to again and again.
Firstly, the food, service and the atmosphere deserve 5/5. My friend Caleb introduced me to this restaurant. We were a group of 6, which was the best part because we got a chance to try every dish on the menu. David was managing our table. He is the best. He came up with the best recommendation. Kept checking on us. The staff was very humble, and customer service was on point. Couldn’t ask for something better. Coming to food. What can I tell? My mouth is still watering remembering or seeing the photo. We tried couple of things, -Chicken Kaarage 5/5 my top favourite. The favor was well coded - Chashu Pork Bao 5/5, Boa was sooo soft, it was just melting in my mouth. I have tried boa in most places. It has the taste of flour. Here it was out of the world. Crispy Shrimp “Po” Bao 5/5 Honestly, I didn’t try this, but my friend’s reaction was captured in my mind. Hence, rated 5:5 Unagi & Crispy Rice 5/5. Jalapeño was the highlight of this. Kosho Garlic Noodles 4/5 overall, it was yummy but felt it was a little oily. Otherwise, it is my top favorite. Overall, in my personal opinion, it is my favorite place go-to place now. I still have to try pork belly. It’s on my list for the next time. I want to shout out to Mr.will, He made our day! I felt like he was a part of our team. He made us feel and treated so special. Super really cool vibe and charm in him. Shall go back to him.
Every second we spent here was absolutely phenomenal. From being greeted by the sweetest girl the moment we stepped in the door, to the bartender coming over to make sure we loved our drinks, to the incredible service we received from David. The food blew us away, and there was not one thing we didn't truly enjoy. They have figured out how to ensure each guest truly has an experience here, not just a good meal. We cannot wait to return over and over again!!!
My husband and I came here 3 weeks ago for our anniversary, and we are still talking about the food. Top 5 dinners in Nashville. We shared a shabu shabu at the counter, and ordered 4-5 of the other plates to share and it was the perfect amount of food. Loved the mocktail offering since I’m pregnant. Cucumbers were my husband’s surprise favorite and I loved the shrimp po bao. Our least favorite was the pork belly takoyaki but it was still delicious! Service was excellent and thoughtful. Place was beyond clean - kitchen, dining, bathrooms, everything.
This place has great food in addition to wonderful service and atmosphere. I was in the bar nook, which is a cute, quiet area that is good for a solo diner or couple. As a solo diner, I don’t think I could do justice to the menu. Portions are fairly generous, especially the kaarage chicken, so I wasn’t able to try many things. If you’re looking to taste a variety of options, definitely go with a group. But I can say that a bowl of chicken and a drink would be an affordable and delicious option worth the trip. In addition to the chicken (fire version), I ordered the salmon crudo and pork belly yakitori. The chicken was my favorite—the spice was mild but flavorful, and it melts in your mouth even when it’s no longer hot. The yuzu aioli that comes with it is also amazing. The crudo was fresh and also well-portioned. I enjoyed the bartender’s choice drink, which was 05. Toki Whiskey, yuzo, lemon, shishito. Loved it! I should have gone with one of the wagyu or bao options instead of the pork belly, but hopefully you can learn from my experience! The bites were very big and difficult to chew through, though the flavor was good. Since I couldn’t bite through the bigger pieces, they took it off my check, which was very kind and not necessary. But I would guess that the bao buns are the way to go if you really want pork belly. Everything tasted fresh and the flavors are harmonious and well-thought out. The bar selection is also thoughtful and intentional, with a good range of options. I could have happily tried all of the cocktails as well. I expect this place will do very well and it will become much more difficult to get reservations, so go enjoy it now!
Went to dinner at Kosho by Tabu on our visit to Nashville in April. If you live in or are visting Nashville you have to go to Kosho! We eat at a lot of Michelin restraunts globally...this is a credible Micehlin level experience...I would put it in between Bib Gourmand and One Star...it's that good! Absolutely PHENOMENAL food, service, and vibe. It was so good we came back a second night to experinece their Shabu Bar (Hot Pot)...INCREDIBLE! The Executive Chef, Nick was kind enough to come out and engage with us and share the Koshu story and vision...this guy knows what he is doing! Their drinks were AMAZING...Will has so much vibe, super fun and whitty, and is a master mixologist...he made us several creations that were wonderfully delicious. Their entire team was fun, knowledgeable, and professional. From the moment we walked in being greeted by Carson to the finish of both our dinners they made us feel appreciated and valued as customers. This will be one of our regular stops in Nashville. Food wise, everyting was elite, well prepared, balanced in flavors, and beautifully presented. Every dish was unique and delicious! Here is what we ordered and all were fantastic: Seared Hamachi, Ahi Toast, Chicken Liver Pate (Sooooo Good! Must try!!), Wagyu Croquettes, Korean Steamers, Lamb Lollipops, Shabu Hot Pot (Amazing!), Matcha Cheesecake, and an array of incredible cocktails created by Will. Oh, their NZ Sav Blanc was fantastic...guava, lemon grass, citrus. Thanks Nick, Carson, Will, and the entire team for two memorable and delicious dinners! Can't wait to come back!! You are a must stop for visitors and should be in the regular rotation of Nashville residents...I know you would be if we lived there. Wishing you great success...we know it will happen!
So many good things to speak about this new jewel in our fair city of Nashville. I've been a fan of Chef Nick Aguilar since I lived in OC where his Oak and Coal and Tabu Shabu are institutions in Costa Mesa so when I heard he opened up a new concept in Music City I was all in. - The build out - Minimalistic, sleek, upscale but approachable. Beautiful, blond stained wood and clean lines welcome you to the main dining room. A sleek, black marbled bar where you can have dinner, drinks, or your shabu shabu experience allow you a front row seat to the chefs on their open kitchen format. Great for dinner with coworkers, your family, partner, or anyone you care to share a meal with. There's a back bar secluded but not hidden and not attempting to be a faux speakeasy which is something that it is not. It's a reprieve for people wanting a more cocktail focused experience for their evening. Great area to have a date, an intimate catch up with a friend, or a place to vibe out and enjoy some of their craft cocktails or izakaya in a bespoke environment. Beautiful blue banquets with gold adorned cocktail tables await guests who wish to retreat from the bar seats in a semi-circle layout to experience the room in all its breadth. - The Vibe - The uplifting decor, windows facing west towards sunset, and soundtrack (think hip but not off-puttingTame Impala, Ariel Pink, Menahan Street Band) give the dining room great life but isn't too loud where you have to scream to your dining partner or overhear the conversation of the 4 top next to you. Staff is friendly, accommodating and informative. Not everyone knows what shabu shabu is (translates to "swish-swish") or hot pot or what togarashi is so they are there to help educate you and hopefully get you to try something new. - Parking - Street parking, a lot adjacent to the restaurant and one directly across the street can accommodate you if you are coming from out of the city, or easily walkable from downtown. - The Food - The important part. Being my first time there I wanted to try everything but knew I couldn't. I asked chef to give me some of his favorites and I'll pick some of mine. He flew out an amuse bouche of the chicken liver toast which may seem odd at a Japanese izakaya but is a nod to his new fair city of Nashville much like the Ube Banana Pudding (which I will be back for). On the same plate was the tuna toast which at first didn't excite me since tuna is done to death but the generous portion of tuna, accented by the chili kewpie, and hint of togarashi was a fantastic marriage of flavors. Big standout though were the Waygu croquettes, not only are they beautiful to look at (see photo) but they are even better to eat. Beefy, unctuous, crispy, this is a craveable bite and glad I didn't have to share with anyone. This is a must. If I see garlic noodles on any menu I order them and these come accompanied with 4 jumbo shrimp which makes this a great and easy shareable option for a table of 2-4 people so everyone get's a shrimp and some noods. Surprisingly the fried broccolini was a hit. Fresno chilis give life to the fried florets, breadcrumbs give it a texture and is a great shareable option for the table to add some green relief to other heavier dishes. Lollipop lamb chops? Yes please, always. From New Zealand you know they are going to be banging complimented by their house chimichurri which eats more like a dressing and wasn't vinegar forward, topped with shiso leaf (slight anise flavor), delicious. Highlight for me is always a pork chasu bao. I see it, I order it, I always enjoy it but this stood out. Namely, the size of the bao are a perfect two-bite. Normally, bao's have too much bun to meat ratio and the pork can be dried out. The kewpie slaw, and glazed pork stay moist and delicious through-and-through. Comes with 3 to an order, I'd recommend 2 per person. Lastly, the miso chocolate lava cake which is sourced from fair trade and responsibly sourced cacao is a staple of the restaurant and although is "shareable" I wouldn't dare!
I’ve never been so excited to run home from dinner just to leave a 5-star review. A must-try spot that I promise will not disappoint. Everything was immaculate, yet unpretentious. Like if your favorite neighborhood hangout spot served up wagyu croquettes and fresh-caught cuts of fish. Unbelievably friendly staff and owner. Super cool ambience and design. And that’s all just before you get to the highlight which is the Shabu experience. We have tried Korean BBQ and Hot Pot before but this is something even more elevated yet less intimidating to cook ourselves or “mess up.” We joked with the best server around (Daniel) that he was our *flavor sherpa* taking us on a foodie adventure 😆. Super cool guy who didn’t lead us astray on anything we ordered! We will 100% be back, and I recommend going to try this spot before it has a waitlist for reservations, which I know it will soon enough! Bravo, Kosho team!
From the time you walk in you are greeted with a friendly host, chefs and servers. This was our first time here and experiencing shabu. All of the food and drinks were excellent and a fair price for the amount of food. Can’t wait to return!
We came in for a girls night and had the bessssst time! The small plates were perfect for sharing and we tried so many different dishes that did not disappoint. The staff was so friendly and attentive and our server Logan gave such good recs! I ordered a mocktail (bartenders choice) and got the yummiest refreshing drink that wasn’t too sweet. Lastly the ube banana pudding is such a fun twist on a classic dessert it was the cherry on top. We cannot wait to come back to try more and definitely going to book the Shabu bar for hot pot!!
Awesome dinner while in Nashville. Enjoyed Drunken Mushrooms and Shrimp Bao Buns plus the #3 cocktail. So much fun and food was amazing.
We had been meaning to try this restaurant forever, but somehow, life kept getting in the way. Well, we finally made it, and let me tell you, worth the wait! The flavors? Mind blowing. The care and passion the chefs put into the food? Next level. My stomach is officially a museum of fine dining. Huge applause to all the chefs! Chef Judy personally stopped by our table, and let me tell you, she didn’t just say hi, she hugged my husband! The staff? Absolutely incredible. Every single person who brought food to our table made us feel so welcome. Jose and William were fantastic, and even though I totally forgot our server’s name (oops), they were absolutely wonderful. 10/10, this was an experience my husband and I won’t forget. Oh, and fun fact Chef Judy is actually a close friend of ours. So, does that mean we get free refills on hugs next time? Asking for a friend. Lol If you’ve been thinking about coming here, stop thinking and just do it. Your taste buds will thank you.
Cannot say enough amazing things about this place. We come from NYC and DC and hope they open in those cities as well. The food is fresh, perfectly cooked. Service is impeccable. Owner and executive chef Nick came out to talk to patrons. You want this guy to be successful. Book a table before you can’t.
Incredible food and a very relaxing atmosphere. My fiancé and I went to this place last night and it was a great experience! We started with the dumplings, hamachi, and cucumbers. The dumplings and hamachi were incredible. We ordered garlic noodles and wagyu short ribs for our main and the wagyu short rib was absolutely incredible. Our server was very kind and attentive and apologize for any delay, which we felt like there was none whatsoever. My fiancé and I both left that place raving about the quality of food and both woke up this morning wishing we had more of that wagyu short rib. Looking to definitely go back and enjoy soon!
Hosted an event here with roughly 40 people & had an amazing event! Food was delicious - the hummus & wagyu balls were my personal favorite. The drink variety was great & recommendations from the bar were greatly appreciated! Thanks Nick for organizing - we had a blast.
An incredible experience. Perfect variety of dishes, great vibes that are ideal for a birthday dinner or special occasion. The jazz music was on point. Our server, Will, was the nicest guy and helped us choose the perfect dishes. Can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the menu.
I was lucky enough to go to Kosho last night with friends. The atmosphere was great. The NA Grapefruit cocktail was PHENOMENAL. The small bites we tasted were incredible. Specially the Yukon Fries and the Wagyu Croquettes. Next time I’m back in Nashville I’ll be sure to have a meal at Kosho.
This is our second time eating at Kosho. We were in Nashville in May 2025 and just got back from a second trip. We love Nashville and love Kosho. Impeccable food, excellent staff all around, amazing ambience, great location, this is a must eat at place. Little off broadway but not much. Highly highly recommend taking the time for a nice dinner. We actually did takeout which was perfect.
I literally NEVER write reviews for places but when I tell you THIS place deserves every single bit of recognition and praise they can get!!! The atmosphere? Amazing! Low lighting and amazing music (not the elevator background music either) The staff? Absolutely TOP TIER! (Chef and Joy I’m looking at you!!) the chef was so amazing and answered questions about the dishes and talked when he could and went to tables when he had time and ran that kitchen with excellence! Our server was Joy and she is the sweetest thing ever and so real. She gave the best recommendations and made the night so great. The other staff members were great too from our small interactions. Now the FOOD? Perfect!! We tried new things to us and were amazed with everything from the bites to the dessert and the portions are not small! I can not recommend enough!!
Karson was hands down the best server I’ve had in Nashville. Everyone in the restaurant was so tentative and kind. Will be back! Each dish that came out kept getting better and better.
Kosho is fantastic! We had a hard time deciding what to get and ended up ordering quite a few items on the menu! The spicy tuna don, Hamachi and dumplings were some of the favorites but really can’t go wrong! Nick has come up with a great menu, 10/10!
Will was our waiter and he did an amazing job! Loved the atmosphere. We dined at the bar and shared one item from each section of the menu. Don’t pass up on the cucumbers, they were perfection! If we’re ever back in Nashville, we will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
The entire staff made me feel like family. Carson our server was so thoughtful and kind. The food is absolutely unreal. Some of the best sushi I’ve had in Nashville. The shabu grill is unreal. Cannot recommend enough and dreaming of coming back already.
We were In town for the weekend, saw good reviews and wanted to be in this area; very glad we did. While easily the best food I’ve had in TN, the ambiance and service are what we left remembering. The head chef, and owner, spoke with us for 10m putting up with our BS, discussing the menu, his background, and the love for his staff. Our group of six was left full, and completely moved by the staff. If you’re reading this, just go and have the best meal you’ve had.
Holy moly buss down life changing food. Amazing service shoutout tall and fun size will. We came as a group of 8 and ordered a ton of things from the menu to share. I genuinely will be thinking about this meal for weeks everything was cleared and devoured by us right when the plates came out. If you’re in Nashville this is the place to be please trust me and go!!!!
The only complaint I have, is with myself!!! I should've come here sooner! Imagine setting up a birthday reservation and that place cancels the day of with no proper notice. I found out from Instagram that all reservations were cancelled. But KOSHOOO easily accommodated! The host was so kind, got us seated quickly, and in the perfect spot! And Cole took it from there. He was kind and knowledgeable! The food was incredible. The drinks, goodness.. They were amazing! The atmosphere and ambiance was perfect, too. This is a place you want to keep to yourself but it's sooo good, you just have to share it! Thank you Kosho, see you soon!
Always, always hits the spot. My fiancé and I regularly go to Kosho whenever we are craving delicious food, carefully crafted cocktails, and great vibes. With so many options for Asian food in Nashville, Kosho is the true standout. We prioritize patronizing locally owed and operated restaurants, instead of the corporate out-of-state behemoths. The chef and exec team at Kosho rock. Now for the food, there's not a bad bite to be had! We always make sure to order the ahi tuna toast, karage chicken, bao buns, spicy tuna don (ask for extra ponzu on the side), as well as the garlic noodles, and skirt steak yakitori. We prefer the summer cocktail menu but can always appreciate a seasonally rotating drink menu (bring back the matcha gin drink with kiwi foam!) Rotating desserts are also stellar. Get yourself to Kosho!
The portions were bigger than I expected! I really liked cocktail #25. I love a good cocktail that isn't horribly sweet. The spicy tuna don has a perfect level of spice and is super fresh.
4.2/5! The service was really good. Our server was fun and gave us plenty of recommendations. Really nice space with a Yoshimoto Nara picture on the wall, loved that touch. I got the #9 drink to start and then the sake juice box which was adorable. The star of the night probably was the salmon crudo, so delicious and fresh! We got the wagyu short rib for hotpot and the portion of the meat was perfect along with the served sides. (Also our server gave us what l believe was a chili oil sauce and it elevated and complimented the meat a lot.) My only critic is that I wish that the hot pot being only at the bar was a little bit more advertised. Initially I didn't realize that you only get hotpot if you pick to sit at the Shabu counter when I made the reservation. Thankfully I decided to look at the menu at that's when I actually realized so maybe a rookie mistake but that could've been frustrating if I hadn't went back to look at the menu. So just something to keep in mind! I will be back to try more. :)
Food was good, but the service was terrible. Our server was very forgetful, and he was a bit rude near the end of our visit since we had to ask to get the spicy tuna don removed from the check because I could hardly eat it and had to send it back. It was way too spicy. For the food, the salmon crudo and seared hamachi are good options, but the waygu short rib was chewy. The pork bao are decent, nothing too special. I was surprised since this place is rated so highly, and I don’t plan on coming back.
I'm very sad to be leaving this review as it has such high ratings and I've heard a few people recommend it highly to us and we live 35 minutes away. With that, I'll start with the atmosphere. The atmosphere was great. We sat in the dining room and enjoyed the music and my wife loved the candle they use in the bathroom to the point of getting one for herself. The bar area looked very inviting as well. As for the service, the waiter was very nice nice but unfortunately, seemed a little scattered with his service. He did try and remember everything without writing it down but unfortunately forgot to place the order for one of our dishes. In the end he did comp us for it after putting in the order late because of that which was very nice and we greatly appreciated that. Lastly, the food and drink. We got 7 dishes and 2 drinks. My wife got a mocktail with yuzu and it was very good. It was very strong on the yuzu and had a great tartness that she really enjoyed. I got the #12 which I was very surprised with. I am not a huge fan of very sweet drinks and I think this had a great balance. The kiwi foam on top mixed with the drink elevated it with that little extra sweetness to balance the dryness of the gin and other ingredients that added a nice tart and citrus flavor. We had wanted the blistered broccolini but unfortunately they had recently stopped serving it and offered Brussels which were not yet added to the menu which was fine. Unfortunately, while the flavor was fine, they added way too much salt and we weren't able to finish it. The Cucumber Sunomono was great! Very fresh and the brine used for the pickled cucumber was very light and refreshing. The Spicy Tuna Don was really good and had good flavor but it was lacking a bit of spice and with amount of rice there was I feel the portion of tuna was lacking for the price. The Unagi & Crispy Rice was ok but the eel sauce was way too salty and definitely needed to be toned back a bit. The crispy rice was too thick for how it was cooked so the inside was a bit too mushy and only coming with 3 it seemed a bit skimpy. The Hamachi Kama almost seemed like it wasn't thawed out fully before cooked. Half of it was way over salted and it was raw towards the fin. The parts further away from the fin was dry. The ginger sauce to the side was probably the best part of that dish and very fresh. The Pork Belly was great! It was cooked very well and I enjoyed the miso base on the side so I could choose the salt level since half of the dishes were way oversalted. The drunken mushrooms were this biggest disappointment. The rich umami they had gotten in them was incredible and had so much potential... the downside is they added way too much salt yet again and it ruined it. I wanted so bad to keep eating them but mine and my wife's tongue by this point started getting very rough from the way too high salt content up until this point. In the end we both left with gritty tongues and very unfulfilled. It seemed like they chose salt over balance in over half the dishes we tried and unfortunately nothing stood out that I would care to go back for mostly due to that. Hopefully this was just an off night but for the prices I would hope the consistency of the quality of food and sauces would be a bit better if so. We were going to try the Ube Banana Pudding because we hadn't seen that combination before but by the time we got through the rest of it we had become very skeptical on how it would turn out. We could not finish numerous plates because our tongues were so rough from the salt content. We aren't comparing these dishes to places like Tokyo or anything because that wouldn't be too fair but locally, there are other restaurants we would much rather go back to and sadly will not be going back here unless we are going to an event nearby and want a few good drinks. There were other drinks on the menu that looked great as well so maybe some day.
I’ve been wanting go to this restaurant since it opened and was very excited when I got the time finally to come in for my graduation celebration with my friends. I booked a table for 12 a couple days beforehand and even called 2 hrs before to add one more person and they were fine with everything and very nice over the phone. When we got there , however the experience was not good. It was everyone’s first time here and the waitress was not accommodating at all. We were very lost on what and how we should order. We needed guidance but she wasn’t very happy to do so. We ordered two shabus for each side of the table. She wanted us to get 3 but we weren’t sure if we needed 3 because others still wanted to order additional food. When the shabu came, she didn’t even bother getting bowels for everyone to share. She forgot our laddle as well. There was barely enough broth for us to even broil. It just was not a great experience. I wanted to enjoy the food but I couldn’t because of how disappointing the experience was. It seemed like she was overwhelmed by the party size. At the end , it took her 30 minutes to get our bill and check us out. Because it was too much work for her , she told us to distribute around us at the end. Just seem like she just wanted us out there and didnt have a happy face all night. I won’t be coming again after this. It was suppose to be a celebratory dinner but turned out to be a disappointing night. I wish the restaurant was more prepared to take care of that us night. As someone who works in the service industry, I get how hard it can be. Due to our party size, they had already added a tip but honestly we weren’t happy about that due to service given to us that night.
