Amazing old school Italian restaurant on the east side of Manhattan. The dining room is on the smaller side so even with a reservation you may have to wait. The staff is very professional and knows the menu inside and out and they will make even a first time guest feel like a regular. The wine list is extensive and the menu is expertly curated. The food is absolutely incredible and is prepared how Italian food should be. It is also a place to see and be seen. I have seen multiple celebs in there eating dinner. Do us all a favor, if you are in the restaurant and you see a celeb trying to enjoy a meal, LEAVE THEM ALONE and let them eat. Finish your meal with Italian cheesecake, an espresso and some sambuca and go home happy !
This place is simply phenomenal. Seafood salad and grilled octopus were fresh and perfectly dressed. Veal chop with onions and shiitake mushrooms was juicy and impossibly flavorful. Service (especially the bartender) was courteous and attentive. 10/10, this is our new favorite Italian place in the city.
It’s an absolutely stunning place - warm, welcoming, and full of charm. I didn’t manage to capture everything on camera, but the experience was truly unforgettable. I was blown away by the Baby Octopus salad incredibly tender and flavorful. The pasta tasting set with four different pastas was outstanding; each one was so good that I would happily order every single dish again next time. The preparation, the sauces, the balance of flavors - everything was simply exquisite. One thing that is especially important to me: I don’t eat onions, and the team here accommodated my request perfectly. They prepared all the dishes without onion, and it was absolutely no problem for them. That level of care means a lot. The service is top-notch, attentive, and genuinely friendly. The only minor downside- like many restaurants in New York - it gets quite loud in the evening, and the tables are close together. But that’s part of the NYC vibe and overall doesn’t take away from the experience. There’s also a piano in the dining room, and I was told they occasionally host live music evenings, which makes the atmosphere even more special. Highly, highly recommend this place
A little gem on the UES, come here often enough and they get to know you and your preference is pretty well. Fortunately I went with someone that goes on a regular basis here, and they crafted a tasting menu that was pretty amazing. A touch of all the different appetizer classics, a number of different pastas and a wholly underrated cut of tomahawk steak. Best was the Napoleon for dessert, I'm not a fan of the sorbets and coconut things but that Napoleon I dream of! Probably the best one I've had in New York. Table spaces are crowded as they max out the tables and that means the waiters do bump into you every once in awhile, in my case it was a little more than frequent because I was sitting right beside the kitchen door.... Remind me not to do that in the future. Service was solid, constant replacement of plates and courses. And they definitely make sure you have enough! It can be a bit pricey, if you're doing it like we did, but the individual dishes and a side to share aren't too bad for the upper east side.
Funny story ... my wife and I used to frequent Campagnola when we lived on the east coast, so much so that my mom purchased us a gift card during one of our visits, and gave it to us the following Christmas. Unfortunately, we moved to the Midwest shortly thereafter, and the gift card sat. And sat. And sat. 15 years later (!!!), we're back in NYC and Campagnola HONORED THE GIFT CARD. Frank actually recognized that it was his signature on the gift card as he guided us to our table. At any rate, as others have said, this is true Old New York Italian, from the service to the food to the ambiance. Get the Napoleon for dessert. You won't be disappointed. And to Frank, we'll be back, hopefully much sooner than the last time.
My plate was empty before I knew it – that good. This restaurant creates a friendly environment. The entire menu demonstrates quality. The workers' approach to service adds pleasure to visits. This spot demonstrated real quality.
Highly recommended and memorable meal. Our server, Renato, is the best! He steered us in all the right ways. The rest of the staff were please, quick, very attentive, and professional. We enjoyed a broad feast....the flavors were all exceptional. The charceterie starter was delicious, and we really enjoyed the octopus. For the mains, the Veal chop, and Osso Bucco and the seafood linguini with red sauce were superb. The atmosphere is old, warm, inviting, and turns lively with the piano player. Make reservations. We'll be back forbour next celebration. Enjoy!
We dined here on our first night in NY with a very large group, and the staff did an excellent job accommodating us despite the restaurant being on the smaller side. The atmosphere is classic old-school Italian, and the service was outstanding—my wine glass was never empty! The wine selection was fantastic, and we thoroughly enjoyed several bottles of Caymus. Instead of ordering from the menu, we opted for the holiday specials, which included a delicious antipasto plate, fresh salads, incredible homemade ravioli, and an assortment of entrees: steak, fish, and chicken. The steak was massive! To top it all off, the desserts were absolutely divine.
So tasty Our reviews had over 36 million views this year. Great Italian in Upper East Side. We love this place. Great original style. She had chicken parm and loved it (she is 100% Italian) and I had some pasta that was awesome. Great apps and desserts to die for. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 7 million views in 2021 and we thank you for that. Old school Italian with great food, but it's very pricey, particularly the wine. I was surprised when they brought out complementary antipasto along with bread. This was a nice touch. The pastas that we ordered were all delicious. The appetizers were okay, but not anything amazing. The main courses were solid. I think that this is definitely the best Italian restaurant in the area, but you pay for the privilege. It's a place for special occasions.
I started with the buffalo mozz salad with onions, tomatoes and peppers. It was good. The mozz was good, the tomatoes were good too. Then I had the spaghetti bolognese. This was very mediocre and the weak part of the meal. The pasta was undercooked and I don’t mean al dente. That’s okay but the sauce itself was bland and basic. I was close to putting salt on it. I wouldnt order that dish again. Then I had the chicken parm alla vodka that wasnt on the menu but they made it for me. It was outstanding. Their chicken cutlet tastes great, the sauce is great, the mozz is broiled nicely and bubbly and brown. So yes their chicken parm alla vodka was worth having again. Overall it was good. Glad to try a different place than what I am used to. Thanks for a nice meal!
We really wanted to love this place but it just didn’t quite hit the mark for us. I had the pasta Puttanesca, the pasta itself was cooked perfectly but the anchovy flavor was way too overpowering and the sauce tasted super salty. My husband had the Ossobuco which unfortunately wasn’t much better. The meat didn’t taste very fresh and the quality wasn’t what we expected. That said, the vibe was great and the service was friendly and attentive. We appreciated the experience overall but the food just didn’t live up to the hype.
My boyfriend made a reservation and took me here for my birthday dinner. While the food tasted good and came out in a timely manner, we left feeling confused and disappointed by our experience. The staff was quite pushy, bluntly interrupted us on repeated occasions, and were quite unfriendly the entire time. We also were not asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu, and instead had to ask ourselves, which was met with a rather annoyed response from our waiter who verbally sped through the items. Left a sour experience for what was supposed to be a nice birthday. Especially disappointed considering we recently moved to the neighborhood from Philadelphia and we were looking for an Italian restaurant to become our local spot for important events.
We came to Campagnola on a recommendation to celebrate my partner’s 30th birthday, and it was terrible. This was one of the worst restaurant service experiences I’ve had. We were not seated until 30 minutes after we had arrived, which meant that it was 20 minutes after the time of our reservation. We were never updated during the long wait by the hostess or a person who appeared to be a manager on the floor. Shockingly, there was no acknowledgement of nor apology for the long wait when we were finally led to a table. At the table, the poor service continued. We were a party of 2, but only 1 of us have a full place setting. The water asked for our drink orders…but did not provide a drink menu; I had to ask for one. My partner had to ask for his drink twice as no one bothered to bring it. Although the dinner menu clearly states that there are specials, we were not told about any of them. I had to ask about them when we were ordering our mains and the server acted like it was an inconvenience to provide them. Our server only vaguely paid attention to our table for the rest of the evening. The food couldn’t save the experience because it was only ok. We ordered a veal chop and a steak. The steak, though cooked to the right temp, was tough and somehow tasted dry. And the cherry on top is silly, but it matters because high quality restaurants routinely get things like this right. He didn’t get a candle on his dessert like every other person who had a birthday in the restaurant. So we sat and listened to someone else be sang happy birthday by the live performer with their candle and we had nothing but a lackluster experience a mediocre food.
Felt like Chinese restaurant where you’re finished in 45 minutes. They wanted us to order asap and get out asap presumably so they could turn the table. Food was extremely pricey and ultra average. Main arrived cold. No apologies just took back and reheated. At the end when I politely told manager that I felt rushed, he looked as if he couldn’t care less and said… sorry to hear that. That’s it. Quick average dinner for $300. For 2 people. No more!
Servers were very rude to us the entire time. We asked for a pasta recommendation and was recommended the arrabbiata. However, they served us a beef carpaccio. When we brought this to their attention, they insisted that we were wrong, didn’t know what we had ordered, and refused to make things right. So we were stuck with a beef carpaccio we did not want and no pasta. After this happened, the servers tried to rush us and get us out of the restaurant. One of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had in the city.
We made a reservation well in advance to celebrate my birthday. We arrived on time to the restaurant and 30 mins after the actual reservation time, they still had not been able to seat us. When we asked the hostess, who was very rude, she said it would be probably another 15 mins. We ended up leaving because what is the point of making a reservation if it’s not gonna be honored?
Do not go here if you are with a group of young women. They will just order for you and walk away before you can even say no and then stick you with an extensive bill. Everything we got was phrased as “you are getting XXX.” Had a menu for less than 5 minutes. My friends and I wanted a pasta dish and a steak. They gave us the most expensive steak on the menu, and two sides we didn’t want. Not asking us once if we wanted the item. Did not see the man ordering for us again after he said we’re getting the steak. Do not recommend.
