The cathedral’s neo-Gothic façade is breathtaking, but it’s the moment you step inside that truly stays with you. The noise of the city softens into reverent hush, replaced by filtered light spilling through stained glass, casting gentle color across stone floors and soaring arches. There is a sense of scale that humbles you, yet an intimacy that invites reflection—whether you come for prayer, architecture, or simply a moment of calm.
The cathedral was absolutely breathtaking inside and out. Pictures do not do justice to the experience of how beautiful it is inside we went as visitors to check out the church demurrals the stained glass and they even had a relic of Saint Patrick in there. We came back the next day to attend mass which the cardinal lead. The mass was beautiful. This is such a nice church to visit such a beautiful place. We would definitely love to come back. Praise God for such a beautiful house that he has in New York.
This is my favorite Roman Catholic church in the city. It even has a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, where I’ve always found spiritual comfort, along with other saints to whom I’m devoted, like Saint Anthony. It’s a truly beautiful place, and I highly recommend that everyone visit. The Christmas Mass is especially lovely—I attended last year as well. Whenever friends or family visit the city, I make sure to bring them here. If you’re planning to attend Mass on holidays or major feast days, you should arrive about 1–1.5 hours early to get in line; people usually start entering through the side doors. There is now increased security inside, which I appreciate, and the overall organization keeps improving as this landmark continues to welcome more visitors. Architecturally, it’s stunning. I really love this church
This is quite possibly the most beautiful church besides St. Peters. I have been going here since I was a kid but I had the opportunity recently to have an after hours tour with a small group. The tour started on the back side of the church at the residence of Fr. Enrique Salvo who is a total gentleman and one of those priests who just gets it. He is incredibly intelligent and personable and you can feel the love that he has for the cathedral when he speaks about it. We were taken into the church via an underground walkway which brought us to the robing room that is used by the priests prior to mass. Then we walked up the large staircase that the celebrants use when entering the church. I was awestruck to think of the people who had walked up these stairs like St. Pope John Paul II and St. Mother Theresa and one of my favorites, John Cardinal O:Connor. No matter how many times I am in the cathedral I can't help but be amazed. There is so much to learn like the fact that there are pieces of bones of the Apostles in the alter. That in an of itself is absolutely amazing. Each statue and side alter is more beautiful than the next. I have an affinity for St. Mother Theresa, St. Sharbel Maklouf and Blessed Fr. Mcgivney as well as the Divine Mercy Image of Jesus. There are side alters and statues and pictures to each of there people and images and there is even a first class relic of St. Sharbel at his shrine in the cathedral. I understand that during the day that it's tough because it gets filled with tourists and tourists in New York can be very annoying and non Catholics don't treat it as reverently as we do but we are a welcoming faith and when I'm on the cathedral I feel so close to God and the Saints and nobodys poor behavior will stand in the way of that. If you have never been, so yourself a favor and visit St. Patrick's but when you are there remember where you are. Keep your selfie sticks to yourself and before you do it, realize how silly you look taking a selfie for your social media in the Cathedral. Jesus I trust in you !
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is always a stop for us- every single time we’re in the city. No matter how busy or chaotic New York feels outside, walking through those doors instantly slows everything down. We always light a candle. It’s just something we do. Something is grounding about that quiet moment- the glow, the stillness, the intention, especially in a city that never stops moving. The cathedral itself is breathtaking in the most classic way. The architecture, the height of the ceilings, the details you notice more each time you visit, it’s beautiful, timeless, and somehow unchanged, no matter how much the city around it evolves. It doesn’t chase trends. It doesn’t need to. It simply is. St. Patrick’s is peaceful, humbling, and familiar all at once. A place to pause, reflect, and reset before stepping back into the noise of New York. Some places become traditions for a reason, and this is one we’ll always come back to. 🕯️✨
Attended mass on New Years Day 1/1/26. It was a great Homily. Staff were very organized and friendly. There were too many tourists not there to attend mass but staff gave ample friendly reminders to be mindful of ongoing mass. The interior is equally majestic as the church's exterior.
⛪ St. Patrick’s Cathedral — A Peaceful Landmark in the Heart of New York City During my time exploring Midtown Manhattan, one place I truly wanted to visit was St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Surrounded by luxury stores and busy streets near Times Square and Fifth Avenue, this cathedral feels like a quiet sanctuary right in the middle of New York’s nonstop energy. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral that dates back to the mid-19th century. Construction began in 1858 and was completed in 1879, making it one of the most important religious landmarks in the United States. Designed in a stunning Neo-Gothic style, the cathedral represents faith, history, and resilience, having survived wars, economic crises, and the rapid modernization of New York City. Today, it remains the seat of the Archbishop of New York and an active place of worship. 📍 Location St. Patrick’s Cathedral is located on Fifth Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, directly across from Rockefeller Center. Although it is often associated with the Times Square area, it is actually just a short walk away. Its central location makes it extremely easy to include in any New York itinerary, especially when visiting Midtown attractions. 🕯️ Things to Experience Inside While there is no “menu” like a restaurant, the cathedral offers meaningful experiences that visitors should not miss: • Admiring the magnificent stained-glass windows, each telling biblical stories • Walking through the side chapels, which are quieter and perfect for reflection • Lighting a prayer candle, a simple but powerful experience • Visiting the gift shop, where you can find religious items, books, and souvenirs ⏰ Opening Hours St. Patrick’s Cathedral is generally open daily, usually from 6:30 AM to 8:45 PM, though hours may vary depending on religious services or special events. Mass is held several times a day and is open to the public. 💰 Admission & Price Entry to the cathedral is free, which makes it accessible to everyone. • Optional audio-guided tours are available for a small fee (usually around $10–15) • Donations are welcome and help with maintenance and preservation 🏛️ Atmosphere & Architecture The moment I stepped inside, the noise of the city faded away. The high ceilings, stone arches, and soft light created a calm and respectful atmosphere. The contrast between the busy streets outside and the peaceful interior is what makes St. Patrick’s Cathedral so special. Whether you are religious or not, the beauty and craftsmanship are deeply impressive. ✨ Final Thoughts St. Patrick’s Cathedral is more than just a church; it is a symbol of New York’s history and spiritual heart. Visiting here gave me a sense of calm and perspective amid the city’s fast pace. If you are in Midtown Manhattan, this is a must-see landmark that offers beauty, history, and quiet reflection — all just steps away from the chaos of Times Square.
On Christmas Eve, I dropped in to St. Patrick’s Cathedral to light a candle and to see the new murals. Unveiled in September, the new murals by Brooklyn-based artist Adam Cvijanovic are entitled “What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding.” The work honors the generations of immigrants who helped build and support the cathedral. The mural includes historical and modern figures, saints, and everyday people. Two most notable are St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (the 1st U.S. citizen to be canonized who founded schools and hospitals for immigrants) and Dorothy Day (a social activist and co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, currently on her way to sainthood - and a Staten Islander!). There is also a specific panel honoring New York’s first responders (firefighters, police, and rescue workers) to recognize their service and sacrifice to the city.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is stunning, especially during the Christmas season. The contrast between the historic Gothic architecture and the surrounding Midtown skyline is breathtaking. Inside, it feels calm and reverent despite the busy streets outside, with beautiful decorations and a peaceful holiday atmosphere. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s worth stepping in to take a moment, light a candle, or simply admire the craftsmanship. A timeless NYC landmark that feels especially meaningful and serene during the holidays. ✨⛪️
I accidentally wandered into St. Patrick’s Cathedral one evening, and I’m really glad I did. It’s an absolutely beautiful church, peaceful and stunning, especially considering it’s right in the middle of busy Manhattan. The architecture, stained glass, and overall atmosphere are breathtaking. It’s one of those places that instantly makes you slow down and take it all in. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s definitely worth stepping inside if you’re in NYC
Absolutely stunning cathedral. Some of the best architecture you’re going to see in North America. The history alone of this cathedral is fantastic, and the way they decorated for Christmas kept it magical yet classy. An absolute joy to look around despite the wait time to get in. A must for anyone that visits New York.
I finally got to see it without restoration scaffolding, and it did not disappoint. The cathedral is beautiful both inside and out. The architecture is stunning, from the soaring arches and pillars to the stained glass windows. Entry is free and open to everyone, though donations are accepted. Definitely not a place to miss if you’re nearby.
12.6.25 Attended the Sat 5:30 mass and we barely got seats, the church was full. Tha mass was beautiful, the music was good, the reader was loud and clear, but it was distracting because visitors are allowed to visit the church. And we sat in the back so it was loud as some visitors pop in for a photo and do not respect the church for what it is to the rest of us. This cathedral is obviously famous and absolutely beautiful so totally understandable. I'd love to see what it'll look like at Xmas. It's free to visit but please consider making a donation to help with the upkeep.
I am not Catholic or Christian but that did not stop me from admiring this stunningly beautiful building and the architecture. The place is so peaceful and quiet and people are praying and reading inside. So be respectful when you go in. It’s free to enter and if you have bags they must be checked before you’re allowed in.
Beautiful cathedral both outside and inside. The architecture is gorgeous from its high arches and pillars to the glass stained windows. To enter the cathedral is free to everyone but they do accept donations and even have a small gift shop you can get a souvenir from. Walking around there is almost a feeling of peace and even if you're not religious it's still an amazing place to visit. Definitely not a place to miss!
The cathedral is of course beautiful. I highly recommend getting tickets to tour ahead of time as you get to see areas that are roped off. A guest pass is not needed to enter although the website states so. Simply wait in one of the many lines around the cathedral and you will enter. There is a quick bag check and men are not allowed to wear hats. I also recommend doing the guided tour as in order to see all parts of the Cathedral without this you need to wait in each individual line outside which each line was about 30-45 min long when I had gone. Also without the guided tour tickets there are parts roped off that you cannot see. The audio tour is being your own headphones and listen via your cellphone.
