Had such a fantastic meal at Chatti by Regi Mathew. If you’re looking for authentic Kerala cuisine, this place absolutely delivers. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and made the whole experience even better. I wish I had asked her name because every recommendation she made was spot on. We started with their lassi, which had such a unique flavor profile different from the usual but really refreshing. The guava mocktail was good but really felt like something I can buy from any store For appetizers, the Quilon shrimp were an absolute banger!!!! perfectly spiced and packed with flavor. The tender jackfruit cutlet was also delicious, crispy on the outside and beautifully seasoned inside. For the main course, we had the fish curry with cassava, red rice, and some puri, and it was just phenomenal. The curry had deep, rich flavors and everything paired together perfectly. We wrapped up the meal with the chef’s special coconut pudding, which was the perfect ending, light, comforting, and full of coconut flavor. Not too sweet but just right amount of sweetness. Overall, an amazing experience with great food and thoughtful service. Definitely a MUST VISIT if you want a true taste of Kerala.
Chatti NYC — Restaurant Review There was so much hype about this restaurant that we finally decided to try it. As we entered, we were blown away — great ambiance and a surprisingly large space for its prime location in NYC. It’s definitely an upscale restaurant, and the interior lives up to that billing. The food was very authentic South Indian Kerala style, and the presentation was top notch. We started with the scrambled crab masala, Trivandrum chicken fry, and a pomfret prepared Kerala toddy shop style. The portions are on the smaller side, so order accordingly. We enjoyed all the appetizers, but the scrambled crab masala is an absolute must-try. For the main course, we had Kerala-style parotta, idiyappam, and raw mango curry with shrimp. The parotta was just okay, but the other dishes were quite good. For dessert, we had the coconut pancake — another must-try — and the cloud pudding. Both were delightful. On the whole, it was a wonderful dining experience. Just be prepared: it’s heavy on the wallet.
Had a fantastic dining experience at Chatti Restaurant. The Kerala cuisine here is truly amazing and very authentic. The Meen Polichu was outstanding, and the tapas-sized appetizers were executed beautifully—especially the calamari and prawns. The mutton biryani was the highlight of the meal, rich and flavorful. Kids absolutely loved the parotta, and the mini hoppers and appams were both cute and enjoyable. The sambar drink was just okay. We also met the owner, Regi, who was very warm and welcoming. The place was packed, yet everything ran smoothly—clearly a very well-managed restaurant.
Made reservations for lunch and were seated in a comfortable 4-person table. Our server Ethan was friendly and welcoming! The restaurant setup itself felt pretty upscale. Comfortable seating, well lit, and noise levels on the lower end. Our order consisted of Malabar Mutton ($18), Breadfruit Fry ($14), and a Tawa-grilled Toddy shop style Pomfret ($28), as recommeded by Ethan. Apps/Touchings set the bar very high, because they were extremely delicious. Curries further extended that experience, with the Raw Mango Curry with Kingfish ($29) hitting the flavor profile out of the park! Coconut milk curry flavor with fish is a match made in heaven and this tradditional Mallu classic does not disappoint at all. The vegetarian Black Chickpea Curry ($24) also hits the spot and went extremely well with Puttu ($9). The filter coffee pudding ($12) was ok - on the milkier side, but balanced on sweetness. Food and service were excellent and we were told that Regi Mathew (the owner) is a serial restaurateur with a handful of restaurants primarily in Kerala, with expansion plans in the UK! We wish the team the best! When craving Mallu food, Chatti will be our obvious choice and recommendation to go to. Yes, the menu is expensive, but the setup, ambiance, and food is prefect for a celebratory occassion!
Really enjoyed my lunch - I had the premium non veg menu, and loved the quilon shrimp, the calamari, the clay pot fish curry, the mango fish curry, the Kerala parotha, and the cloud pudding. The portions were sizable and I was perfectly satisfied. Friendly and attentive service by the staff. Pretty good value for money for the lunch menu. Will be back!
We had a truly memorable dining experience at Chatti Restaurant. Our meal began with a selection of appetizers—Cochin Calamari, Toddy Shop Beef Fry, and Chilli Roasted Calamari—each one packed with authentic flavors and cooked to perfection. The main course was equally impressive. The Ramapuram Chicken Curry, Mutton Curry, and Quilon Coconut Prawns stood out for their depth of flavor, richness, and exceptional attention to detail. Dessert was a delightful finale, with the Cloud Pudding and Filter Coffee Pudding offering unique, indulgent flavors. The cocktails were excellent as well, especially the standout Kandhari, which was perfectly balanced and refreshing. A special mention goes to owner and chef Reji Mathew, whose culinary talent truly shines. It was a pleasure meeting him, especially as he is a fan of my wife Sajini from the Malayalam TV sitcom Akkarakazhchakal. The restaurant’s ambience is warm, elegant, and spacious, enhancing the overall dining experience. The facility is excellent, featuring a dedicated second floor for private dining that can comfortably accommodate around 75 guests. Overall, Chatti Restaurant offers an outstanding dining experience—from food and drinks to ambience and service. Highly recommended.
It is an amazing spot for truly authentic Kerala food. The flavors are rich, traditional, and beautifully crafted—every dish highlights Kerala’s spices, coconut, tamarind, and seafood just the way you’d expect back home. If you miss real Kerala cuisine, this place is a must‑visit to relive those familiar, comforting tastes in the heart of New York
Kerala food was absolutely amazing! Every dish had rich coconut flavor and fresh spices. The appam with stew was soft and delicious, and the fish curry tasted authentic like home cooking. Must try for everyone! I loved it 👌
This is some of the finest and most memorable Indian food you can find outside of the subcontinent. The dishes have a deep, authentic taste that captures the exact flavors we crave. I’ll definitely be back. One of my top picks from the menu is the Seafood Moilee Soup. I highly recommend checking with the server (more lucky, the chef himself might visit the tables) for help choosing a dish. They can guide you based on your personal preferences, as the menu focuses on authentic, subtle nuances rather than typical 'flavor bombs.'
Exceptional food and service. I've always loved Kerala Syrian Christian cuisine, and the menu here is beautifully inspired by it. Chef Regi is incredibly warm and polite, and you can immediately sense his passion for the food in the way he talks about his recipes. We tried a wide variety of dishes, and my favorites were the Rasa Vada, Kottuvadi drink, and Cloud Pudding. The amuse-bouche and palate cleansers were also thoughtfully crafted mix of flavors. The decor is minimal and Kerala inspired, music is soothing, presentation is top notch.
An elevated, soulful take on South Indian cuisine Chatti by Reji Mathew is a standout experience that beautifully redefines South Indian cuisine. Chef Reji Mathew brings incredible depth, nostalgia, and refinement to every dish—honoring tradition while presenting it in a truly modern, thoughtful way. The flavors are bold yet balanced, with each dish telling a story rooted in Kerala’s culinary heritage. From the intricate spice layering to the impeccable presentation, it’s clear that every detail has been intentionally crafted. The food feels soulful and comforting, yet elevated enough to feel special and memorable. The ambiance complements the cuisine perfectly—warm, elegant, and inviting—making it ideal for both intimate dinners and celebratory occasions. Service is attentive and knowledgeable, adding to the overall sense of care and hospitality. Chatti isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey. Easily one of the most exciting and authentic Indian dining experiences in the city. Highly recommended.
Chatti is a wonderful place for unique, authentic Kerala dishes. The food was truly delicious, and what I loved the most was the beautiful presentation of each dish. This was a mom-and-son visit, and we ordered fish cutlet, porotta, beef fry, Trivandrum chicken fry, fish raw mango curry, and cloud pudding. Everything we ordered was excellent, but our absolute favorites were the fish cutlet (the best fish cutlet I have ever had), the Trivandrum fish fry, and the cloud pudding—the yummiest dessert and a must-try!!!!
Beautiful evening with family! Great food and vibe! Kerala feel! Loved almost everything especially the duck curry and the crispy mushrooms! Wasn’t too thrilled with the beef curry! Enjoyed my glass of toddy. Got to meet the owner and his wife! Very polite and professional! Went to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our children.
Visited The Chatti Indian Restaurant in NYC and loved how different the food felt. The menu highlights Kerala-style South Indian cuisine, with flavors I hadn’t tried before. Everything we ordered was delicious and well balanced. The ambience is warm and inviting, calm, cozy, and perfect for a relaxed meal. Service was attentive and the overall vibe felt premium yet comfortable. One small thing to note: a 20 percent gratuity was automatically added for our party of four. We were told it was due to Christmas Eve, which was a bit unexpected. Overall, a great spot to experience authentic Kerala food in NYC.
A Taste of Home in the Heart of the NYC 🥥✨ Finding a place that feels like home when you are miles away is a rare gift. For my birthday, Chatti NYC didn't just serve us a meal they transported us. The decor and furniture resonated so deeply with us. My husband comes from a Kerala Christian family, and the interior captured similar vibes. From the courteous team at the front desk to our wonderful server, Aakash the hospitality was unmatched. Aakash was so helpful in guiding us toward the best the menu had to offer. The meal was a journey of flavors. We loved the Filter Coffee Martini, Malayali Old Fashioned, and Toddy. The Kandhari Vodka shots, prepared right in front of us by Chef Reji, made us feel so special. This was the best tasting shot I ever had. We started with the Beef Fry, Mathi Fry, and Jackfruit Cutlets. The Lobster Toddy Style was an absolute revelation - authentic and delicious. We also loved the Raw Mango Prawn Curry, the delicate Fish Moilee, and the comforting Wayanad Chicken Curry. No Kerala meal is complete without the perfect flaky Kerala Parotta, small Appams, Vattayappam. 🤤😋 Between courses, we were served two palate cleansers. The one with banana and mango was an absolute "wow" moment so refreshing and a true palate cleanser! For dessert, the Palada and coconut pudding were mouthwatering and perfect, though the filter coffee pudding wasn't quite our favorite. We had the chance to meet with the incredible Chef Reji Mathew who made this amazing feast. He is a wonderful man from Kottayam Kerala and we cherished the chat and the photos we took with him. To top it off Chef Reji surprised me with a special birthday gift: a Shankh (conch shell) accompanied by a thoughtful note. It was such a beautiful, unique gesture that made me feel so incredibly happy and special. Thank you, Chef Reji and the entire team, for making my birthday a bridge to my roots. We cannot wait to return! 🥘❤️ We are already eyeing their Theenmura menu! It runs until January 4th, and we are truly hoping to be back before then to experience it. ❤️
Here’s my very detailed review of my new favorite Indian restaurant in the states. If I could give an extra star, I absolutely would. Everything about Chatti was unexpectedly incredible. It was so good that I came back within 24 hours. The service truly was the BEST. - Michelin level. Everybody was incredible from the moment you walk in until you leave. Ethan took care of us both days with such great care, an amazing, soft spoken individual who knows everything about the menu and his craft. He truly made our experience go from 11/10 to 12/10 and made us feel special both times. The drink menu is outstanding, and the Toddy a Kerala specialty was done better here than at even some of the nicest restaurants in DC. Truly authentic and perfectly executed. I was seriously impressed by the chefs’ creations. Every dish felt thoughtful, elevated, and like a true masterpiece. Chatti is something special, and I cannot wait to be a true regular here every time I come to the city. I have to mention I’ve tried Semma, Adda, and pretty much every top Indian restaurant in the district, and Chatti made it to number one for us. All the small details this restaurant cares about will definitely get them a Michelin star very soon. The warm plates, a team full of people catering to each table, the kind chef that comes around and talks to everybody. The table side service/cleaning. This place is ADMIRABLE. As for the ambiance and decor seriously amazing coastal touches in every corner, truly admirable. Loved this place so much and can’t wait to come back. As for the food. Must get beef toddy fry, mutton malabar, the jackfruit cutlets, my god… chef is a genius, porotta for sure, any of the grilled seafood options will be amazing. Prawn pouches. Rasamvada was OUTSTANDING. The spices and proportions are right on. Last thing I have to say, the sambar and chutney tastes like it’s made on the spot good quality coconut and good quality oil. A lot of Indian restaurants heavily use canola oil… yes even the good ones here a lot is made with coconut oil and nothing is too oily. I’m so in love with my experience at Chatti cannot wait to come back.
I decided to host my company’s Holiday Party at Chatti. Apart from me, no one on my team had ever had Kerala food so I was a bit worried on how they would take it. The menu was a little bit overwhelming to everyone. However - we were greeted by the host and he recommended we go with a sampler of different appetizers. The chef came over and I told him our budget and he made sure the food kept coming - from the toddy shop beef fry, chicken, mushrooms, fish, lobster, and more. Then the entrees which included paratha, appam, chicken curry, shrimp curry. And finally dessert which included paysam, coconut pudding and coffee pudding. Everyone at my table had a wonderful time and an explosion of tastes in their mouths. The food was of amazing quality and authentic to the tastes of Kerala. Thank you Chef Regi Matthew and team for a memorable night and we will be coming back again for sure!
⸻ After a much-awaited wait, we finally visited Chatti, and it was absolutely worth it. Making a reservation was super easy, and the staff were kind enough to move our booking forward at our request.Ethan took care of us throughout the evening—he was absolutely exceptional. He checked in on us regularly and made wonderful recommendations that truly elevated our experience. We were also lucky to meet Chef Regi, who graciously came by our table multiple times while we dined. He even made mini appams for my daughter and gifted her a shell to take home—a thoughtful gesture that made the entire experience feel incredibly wholesome and special. For drinks, we chose the Kerala toddy, which was sweet and refreshing. The beef ularthiyathu and mutton dishes were absolutely delicious, and the jackfruit biryani was delicately spiced and beautifully balanced. Overall, it was such a warm and beautiful experience—being treated with genuine care and leaving with both our bellies and hearts full
This place is an absolute heaven! As someone from Kerala, I can confidently say this is the most authentic South Indian food I have ever had in the U.S. Every single dish was exceptional — the breadfruit curry, biriyani, mushroom pouch, vazhapoo vada — everything was absolutely top notch. The ambience took me straight back home, stirring so many childhood memories. A huge shoutout to Chef Reji Mathew and his team for their dedication, warmth, and incredible service. Truly outstanding work! Looking forward to seeing even more traditional dishes and Kerala snacks on the menu for people who are new to the cuisine.😊
We enjoyed a truly delicious dinner today at Chatti Restaurant. We started with appetizers—Cochin Calamari, Toddy Shop Beef Fry, and Chilli Roasted Calamari—each bursting with authentic flavor and cooked to perfection. For the main course, the Ramapuram Chicken Curry, Mutton Curry, and Quilon Coconut Prawns were absolutely outstanding—rich, flavorful, and crafted with remarkable attention to detail. Dessert was just as impressive: the Cloud Pudding and Filter Coffee Pudding were wonderfully unique and irresistibly tasty. The cocktails were excellent as well, especially the standout Kandhari. A special mention goes to Owner and Chef Reji Mathew, a talented chef and a fan of my wife Sajini from her Malayalam TV sitcom Akkarakazhchakal. It was a pleasure to experience his culinary artistry firsthand. The ambience of the restaurant is warm and spacious, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The facility is top-notch, with a dedicated second floor reserved for private dining that can comfortably accommodate around 75 guests. Overall, Chatti Restaurant delivered an exceptional dining experience—highly recommended
Incredibly well laid out Kerala Cusine experience. You quickly escape the noise of Midtown NYC , once you step into the doors. Friendly staff greets you and sets you up at your table or bar seating. The drinks , the food and ambience are all top notch. Kallu is a must try , the fact that they get it you without breaking the cold cycle , shows you the amount of thought and care that as gone into the overall experience design. Tried the Munnar Blossom , Chicken Wayanad , Duck Mappas and Shrimp Mango curry. The food was excellent and authentic.
Celebrating Diwali at Chatti by Regi Mathew was a distinct pleasure. The interior of this restaurant is beautiful and spacious. The bar area alone is colorful and there were many assorted bottles. Wines were assembled in their own display cabinet. Each table setting had a plate with a seashell and a description of what to do with it. I listened to the sounds of the ocean and felt relaxed. The cuisine is from Kerala and the menu is extensive. Steamed Hoppers served on a banana leaf were slightly sweet. Quilon Coconut Prawns was the appetizer followed by Toddy Shop Style Beef Curry style and a Kerala Parotta. An amuse of a tiny square of coconut and tamarind that resembled pâte de fruit was served on an unusual spoon. Then came lunch. The food was flavorful and I was enjoying each bite. I got another parotta which was over indulgence but considering it was Diwali, I wasn't being frugal. A palate cleanser of coconut, pineapple and banana shreds came next. Dessert was a warm Palada that resembled the vermicelli puddings I had as a child. It was sheer nostalgia. Even the parchment paper with the Parotta had Chatti's name on it. These tiny details made for a fine restaurant. Service here was friendly and professional. From Christo, the manager to Danielle, the server and Viraj kept the restaurant running well. On Friday evenings, live jazz is played. Restrooms are located at the back. I am keen to return for the prix fixe which is served on the weekdays and am bringing a friend next month. Highly recommended.
Great experience overall on food . Appetizers - toddy beef, Cochin calamari, banana fritters was great. Chicken TVM was ok. Don’t miss Steamy Hoppers(vettayappam) . Clay pot fish curry and fish biryani were awesome . For drinks - try munnar blossom.. fantastic . Cloud pudding and Purple Taro icecream was fantastic . Service was blah… person changing the plates between courses was hurrying even before course got over..none came to check on food and we had to constantly look over to get service attention… if you spend $400 for a dinner for 4 , maybe bit of attention won’t hurt :) … go there to experience Kerala cuisine.. you won’t regret
Chatti is definitely an ode to the food from Kerala and it was certainly an enjoyable meal. We got the ghee rice, beef fry, mussels, shrimp wrapped in banana leaf, mutton curry, avial, Kerala paratha. The beef fry was outstanding and the star of our meal. Shrimp was okay - I would skip that the next time. Mutton curry took me back home to the food my mum makes. It was so tasty! Avial is my favourite dish and this one was good. The cloud pudding was divine - highly recommend. For drinks, we got the toddy and the espresso martini. Portions are small, and it is on the pricier side. However, definitely worth a visit as the food overall is very good!
Chatti is a fantastic spot with great drinks. My husband and I really enjoyed the meal, especially the tasty banana flower fritters. I tried the breadfruit curry with parotta for the first time—it was delicious and incredibly tender. My husband loved the "toddy shop style" lobster, jackfruit cutlets, beef roast, and soft hoppers. The only letdown was the jackfruit biryani; the fruit felt raw and undercooked, and it lacked flavor. Despite that, the food and atmosphere were good enough that we’ll definitely go back.
Chatti is a wonderful place to experience unique and authentic Kerala cuisine right in New York City. The food was truly delicious, and what stood out the most was the beautiful presentation of each dish—it felt thoughtfully plated and true to its roots. We visited as a couple and ordered kallummakkaya, porotta, beef fry, idiyappam, egg curry, Wayanad chicken curry, and ghee rice. For drinks, we tried the Kerala Breeze and buttermilk. Overall, everything we ordered was excellent, but the absolute highlight of our meal was the beef fry—it was perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. The Wayanad chicken curry, however, felt average in taste compared to the other dishes and didn’t quite stand out. For dessert, we tried the palada payasam. While it tasted good and authentic, the portion size felt a bit too small. Overall, Chatti is a great spot for anyone craving authentic Kerala flavors with elegant presentation. Definitely worth a visit, especially for traditional dishes like beef fry and porotta.
We tried a variety of dishes — the fish cutlet, Cochin calamari, banana flower patties, mushroom pouches, and Malabar mutton appetizers. Portions were small but perfectly spiced and flavorful. The Ramapuram chicken and Wayanad chicken lived up to expectations. Among the curries, the mango prawn curry, breadfruit curry, and vegetable mango curry were decent but not particularly memorable. On the other hand, we absolutely loved the idiyappam and parotta — both were fresh and perfectly made. For dessert, everything was delightful. The cloud pudding stood out, and all the ice creams and the coffee pudding were excellent finishes to the meal.
I went to Chatti for the first time yesterday and my experience was quite pleasant. The place felt unpretentious, earthy and warm with beautiful wooden interiors that set the stage for Kerala-inspired setting with little hints of contemporary to it. They have an extensive menu of many authentic dishes from Kerala. Even the ones that are prepared in Malayali homes. So much to choose from!! We ordered the sardine fry which is a typical toddy‑shop hit in Kerala. It was perfectly crisped with the right flavors and not an overwhelming heat. The coconut prawns were mild with shredded coconut, again, nicely done, but could have probably used more flavor. The raw‑mango kingfish curry balanced tang and richness well! And the buttermilk was perfectly creamy and soothing with an authentic taste - a 100 for me! Service was attentive, friendly and polite, not rushed. The food was genuinely Kerala, but just way too gentle on spice. I just wished the spice levels were a little more pronounced. Overall, the meal did a great job with packing in the exact flavors of Kerala without the standard Indian food spice levels. Also, the portions are very small for the price you pay. So you would have to order more if you are going in a big group. I would want to go back again to try more delicacies from the menu and see if I have more insights to add to my experience.
The ambience is warm and inviting, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. The staff were attentive, courteous, and made us feel very comfortable throughout our visit. One of the most innovative and delightful touches was the unique way they presented the gift at the end — bringing out a charming parakeet box to reveal it. That thoughtful presentation truly stood out and added a special element to the evening. When it comes to the food, the porotta was excellent soft, flaky, and perfectly done. The fish biryani was another highlight, full of flavor and wellbalanced in spices. However, a few dishes didn’t quite meet expectations. The TVM chicken was not as good as it should have been, lacking the depth of flavor we anticipated. The Filter coffee ice cream was below average and could have been better in taste and texture. The Wayanad chicken and fish curry also didn’t stand out compared to the other dishes on the menu.
I was very excited to come here as a Mallu myself, but thought our meal was average at best. We started with the Trivandrum chicken fry then ordered the wayanad chicken curry, clay pot fish curry and mutton cup biryani for mains. The chicken curry was my favorite. The fish curry tasted exactly like a frozen fish curry we’d always get at the Indian store so that wasn’t as impressive. Biryani was decent and it came with a really nice sweet chutney we liked. We also got the pomfret and chose the tawa grilled with gooseberry masala. That was really good and the fish was cooked well. For dessert we had the filter coffee pudding which was probably the highlight of our meal. Kinda tasted like Indian flan. I also tried the hibiscus fizz mocktail which was ok
Visited this place the last week. Had to wait to get seated though we arrived after 5pm… the hostess were just ignoring, seated down by about 5:20pm. Felt it’s just hyped up. The food really lacked authentic flavor. Toddy shop Beef fry was nothing close to what you’d get in Kerala, India. Duck mappas was okay. Mussels had a lot of cooked spices just smeared over it. The ghee rice was EVEN WORSE THAN A HEARTBREAK. Absolute, disaster - no nuts and raisins is forgivable, how about just no taste or slightest fragrance of ghee ?? Just by adding a banana leaf as a base to each of your dish would not make it flavorful. Culinary experience deserves satisfying one’s tastebuds and not just be visually appealing. This place is more apt for corporate-social gatherings, most of the crowd there would probably have 1-2 Malayalee's in a group of 5 or more multi-racial individuals dining at the table... Malayalee's can definitely make better food themselves back in their home kitchen wherever they maybe ! Appetizers called as ‘Touchings’. Portion size was okay, for your NY priced meal … however in an actual toddy shop/or even more localized restaurants you’ll definitely get a better portion size
