Our food was fresh, hot and tasty. The service was lovely. We had theater tickets and they kindly kept our leftovers in their fridge to be picked up after the play was over.
First trip to New York and we were all craving Chinese. China River was close to our hotel, so we walked over to give it a try, and it turned out to be just what we were hoping for. The food was flavorful and fresh, and the service was great. It felt like a great find for our first night in the city.
After an exhilarating Broadway show, we made our way to China River, our go-to Chinese restaurant conveniently located across the street from the venues and just a short walk from the InterContinental Hotel where we stay. Despite being close to closing time, the warm staff welcomed us for dine-in or takeout—now that’s what I call exceptional customer service! We decided to get takeout and as always it was fresh, hot, and delectable. China River is a beloved staple for us every time we visit—bring your family along, and enjoy the exquisite service and food.
You'll notice right away how well they treat everyone. The strong feedback made me check out this restaurant. We took the sharing approach with our food selection. Staff members demonstrated genuine warmth. China River has gained our repeated visits.
I had the pleasure of enjoying a delightful lunch date with my niece Sammoya at China River, and it was an experience to remember! From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with warm smiles and a vibrant atmosphere that set the perfect tone for our outing. The menu offered an impressive array of authentic Chinese dishes, and we struggled to choose because everything sounded so delicious! We finally settled on the Singapore Noodles and the Shrimp Fried Rice, both of which were bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The portion sizes were generous, leaving us completely satisfied but eager for more! Sammoya particularly loved the mango juice, fruity and fresh, paired with the right amount of sugar along with other tangy citrus flavors, making it a super treat for the mouth—she couldn’t stop raving about them! The attentive staff made sure we felt welcomed and catered to our every need, adding to the overall enjoyment of our meal. What truly stood out to us was the cozy ambiance of the restaurant, making it an ideal spot for quality time with loved ones. We left feeling happy, full, and excited to come back and explore more of the menu. Thank you, China River, for providing such a wonderful dining experience! We can't wait to return. Highly recommend to anyone looking for great food and a welcoming vibe! Many thanks again my niece for insisting that we should have Chinese Cuisine while visiting New York.
First time at this restaurant. Everything was delicious! Had several appetizers; the crystal shrimp dumplings, salt and pepper squid, chicken wings, and dumplings in hot oil. For the entree I had the Kung Pao Chicken with Peanuts. It's u like the usual Kung Pao because it doesn't come with the usual carrots and celery. It was really delicious with the chicken being very tender. A warning! It is very spicy hot, which I enjoy.
Came here for the first time for dinner with friends, we were all over the place. Couldn’t decide what to eat, how to pay, but the staff were nice and patient with us. The food was good, we shared all 3 plates I ordered the vegetarian dumplings, sadly no pictures of the other 2. Fried rice with vegetables was perfect so was the bean noodles (abit spicy tho).
I really enjoyed the food. We shared a couple meals and appetizers. We had the spring rolls, szechuan dumplings, and tasty pot. Everything was delicious. Orders tasty pot medium spicy and it was a little more spicy than we normally eat but not terrible. Service was excellent and prices were good. Next time I visit the city , I will go back.
The lunch specials were pretty good! I ordered cumin stir-fry pot with fish, pork bean curd, and green pepper beef. The soups were a little bit too thick for me, but the main dishes were good. The stir-fry pot were not too oily, and the green peppers were spicy but not too much. Overall, it’s a pretty good place for some Chinese food. :)
The only reason I visited this place was because I booked a ticket for 'Phantom of the Opera' at Majestic theater, which is just across the street. I reach the venue nearly 2 hours early and it was cold and raining, so decided to pop inside this small restaurant. The place is cozy and I could enjoy a few drinks and light snacks while I wait for the show. Their 'hot sake' is amazing. Just what I needed to beat the new York chill. I had a soup which was also great. I liked their sake so much that when the show ended, I went back to the place. They were closing down but were courteous enough to serve me the drink while they closed down.
4.5 stars. China River is located in the theater district right next to the St. James Theater. You can easily walk by and miss it. From the front, the restaurant looks small but once you go in, you will see the restaurant keeps going towards the back and has a balcony for more seating. Ambiance was super relaxed, it felt nice to come inside and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. As you walk in, there’s a small waiting area and full-service bar to the right. Staff is very welcoming and attentive and the menu is extensive! Took us a minute to decide what to order. Menu is traditional Sichuan Chinese food fare. We ordered mini pork soup dumplings, lettuce wraps with diced chicken and pine nuts, salt and pepper pork chop, sizzling sliced beef, plain fried rice, and shrimps with walnuts. The pork chops were superb, and I really liked the presentation. The salt and pepper pork chops were served on a bamboo rice basket. Meat was tender with crunchy exterior. The fried pepper, shallots and garlic gave it a nice aroma. This was definitely my favorite dish from our meal and a must try. Soup dumplings had nice thin casings and good flavored broth. The shrimp with cashews were okay, I’ve had better. The sizzling sliced beef was delicious and had a lot of flavor. It came with red and green peppers and onions in brown sauce. The lettuce wraps were refreshing. The pine nuts with the diced chicken and fresh lettuce were a good combo. Prices here are comparable for the area. Food were plated nicely and were tasty. The service here is quick and we got our food a little over five minutes after we ordered. With service like this, I imagine this a perfect place for a quick pre theater meal.
Stopped into China River on a whim before my play. Ordered the mini pork soup dumplings and vegetarian spring rolls. The spring rolls were overly doughy (though nicely crisp) with a slightly acidic sweet and sour sauce, but the dumplings were outstanding — worth coming back for alone. Service was quick, the food hit the spot, and the deceptively large venue includes bar seating and an extensive menu.
the first time i went here, everything was absolutely PERFECT. no bad things about it at all. the second time, was almost perfect. i felt like sometimes, our server wasn't the friendliest or patient. maybe that was just me. but the food was again, really really really good. something i will never stop recommending is the chicken fried rice. (CHEFS KISS.) and the wonton soup. both are absolutely delicious. prices are fair and reasonable as well. the restaurant is a really good location, right across from the majestic theater at broadway (phantom of the opera). also quick service, usually not TOO many people there, which is good because things could get crowded, especially at broadway.
Farabe and I came here after watching a show for dinner. The restaurant didn't have too many people and we were seated quickly. I ordered chicken and broccoli with shrimp fried rice. Farabe got chicken with string beans and shrimp fried rice. The chicken dishes were flavorful and not too salty or greasy. Personally, I wish the dishes had more sauce. The shrimp rice was tasty but, it lacked a bit of flavor. It just need a bit more seasoning but, it was tasty with the chicken dishes. I also like that the fried rice had big shrimps and it wasn't tiny dried baby shrimp. They have lunch special deals but, no dinner, happy hour, or combo meals.
It was FINE. Not great, not terrible. Fine. I get the price was more expensive being in Times Square. The food was cooked fine and they added rice on for an extra two bucks for dishes that should have rice. So it was annoying. The music was terrible. And loud. Happy to get Chinese food. Could be better for the price and local. Womp womp.
I had their beef with broccoli for lunch. I often order that at restaurants when I go there for the first time. If a restaurant can't make one to my liking, I don't go there again because I know what it is supposed to taste like. This restaurant did not make one that satisfied me. The restaurant is located on West 44th Street near 8th Avenue. As far as I can recall, I think that the restaurant is moderately priced.
The food here is absolutely terrible! We went there last night and two of our party of four got sick, stomach aches and vomiting. I wish I would have seen the other negative review posted just a few weeks ago in December. We could have saved ourselves a lot of suffering! We will definitely not be going back. We recommend that you do NOT go there. Regarding the owners reply: I did make direct contact with their manager. He refused to accept any responsibility. Even seemed to insinuate that I was lying. I have nothing to gain by lying. If you want to go there, then go. Take your own chances, but consider yourself warned!
