This lovely kind soul jade made my day with the most beautiful and flavorful drink ive ever had. Best. Day. Ever!
My visit to Dear Mama actually begins with a scheduling conflict. Once a week I travel from Philly to NYC to visit family. For the last 6 months I have reserved my Tuesdays to make this happen & in anticipation have reserved my travel accommodations well in advance. I recently started a new job where I'm now scheduled for Tuesdays. This means that I have shifted my visits to Wednesdays. The only available adjustment to my travel brings me into the city earlier than intended so I have some time to kill. Somewhat inconvenient but not really a problem for me because I also have a backlog of personal work that needs to be done, I just need somewhere to do it. Wanting to avoid Starbucks or any public library I googled "Harlem Coffee Shop". Dear Mama was one of the few options listed (They definitely got me with the name) & after some back & forth in my mind I decided to give it a try. Upon arrival I go to open the door & I'm greeted warmly & enthusiastically by L.E. behind the counter which is at least 10 feet away before I could even get a foot over the threshold. I ordered a small coffee & was informed that I could get either a medium or a large for the same price so I went with the large knowing that I would be there for a while. I appreciated that because he could have just given me what I asked for & sent me on my way but that tidbit of information helped to enhance my experience. I inquired about an outlet where I could plug my laptop in & L.E. gestures towards a bar top seating area behind me with stools. I didn't want to sit near the door in the winter & also didn't want to sit on a stool with all the work I planned to catch up on so I asked if there was a table I could sit at away from the door. The only other option was a servers section which was technically off limits but not particularly busy at this time of day. The server David did not mind so I chose a table in the corner & out the way & proceeded to work & drink my coffee. A few minutes later without a word David brings over a carafe filled with water & a glass that I didn't think I needed but did end up consuming most of once my coffee reached room temperature. A small unexpected gesture that I was thankful for. I didn't order any food as it wasn't in my budget for the day, $14 for a bacon egg & cheese is a bit much I'm not gonna lie but that breakfast burrito does sound good. David didn't make me feel weird or unwanted for taking up any space in his section. The ambiance was great. The layout was clean & spacious (picture included), floor to ceiling glass panels gives an enclosed outdoor seating feel with clear views to the outside world. The playlist was top tier. For the first 45 minutes of me being there it was all Earth, Wind & Fire & then a really good underground/indie Hip-Hop mix featuring the likes of MF Doom, Earl Sweatshirt, Freddie Gibbs, Nas, Action Bronson, The Alchemist, Westside Gunn etc that after about a song or two I was sure would be changed or complained about but that never happened. Apparently this is just what they do here & I Love that for Harlem. Dear Mama does not betray its name. Although I now live & work in the city of Philadelphia I grew up in NYC. I've seen the city change in many ways for better & for worse but this place in my mind is a welcomed addition. I sat there for three hours completely unbothered. I managed to complete the bulk of my work as the traffic began to pick up & then cleared out. I left a couple dollars on the table for David to show my appreciation & left with the feeling that I had found a new place to frequent on my weekly travels to the city. I was shown great hospitality by both L.E. & David & I will most definitely be back. I might even try one of them $14 bacon, egg & cheese croissants to see what that's all about, I definitely got my eye on that breakfast burrito. Thank You Dear Mama.
We were in the neighborhood on our evening walk when we stumbled upon Dear Mama. And can I just say: Dear Mama! The ambience was exquisite, the food - all day breakfast - was to die for, and the service by Leora was out of this world. She told us about the provenance and rich culinary history of all of the dishes especially the signature sauces and she hooked us up with the fresh chocolate chip cookies and the lavender muffin as well. The love of my life even wanted to run away with her, and she just had foot surgery. This place earns all the stars in the universe in my book, but Google only lets me provide five.
Dear Mama is one of those rare coffee shops that instantly makes you feel at home the moment you walk in. The space has such a warm, creative energy — great music, cozy seating, and that perfect mix of buzz and calm that makes it ideal for both catching up with friends or getting some work done. But what really makes Dear Mama stand out is the people, especially Leora. She’s absolutely phenomenal — the kind of waitress who remembers your name, your order, and somehow always manages to brighten your day. Leora’s kindness feels completely genuine, and her attention to detail turns an ordinary coffee run into something special. She’s quick, friendly, and always makes sure your cup (and your mood) stays full. The coffee itself is top-notch — smooth, rich, and clearly made with care. Their pastries and breakfast options are just as impressive (highly recommend the avocado toast or a croissant with your latte). All in all, Dear Mama isn’t just a coffee shop — it’s an experience. And thanks to people like Leora, it’s one I’ll keep coming back to again and again.
We loveeeeeee Dear Mama! Absolute best coffee in the area, bar none. They even sold us an enormous bag of beans for our wedding because we used coffee as favors! I love the iced cappuccino, and on days when I am craving something sweet, it’s the MCM all the way (extra spicy). The Julius salad is delish as is the new Tuna salad sandwich! I will say though- they have the BEST lime daiquiri my wife and I have ever tasted. Seriously, we try them elsewhere and are always disappointed. So sample that sleeper hit.
I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect spot to work while enjoying great coffee, and Dear Mama never disappoints. Delicious dishes, a cozy ambience, and above all: the staff. They’re always welcoming, and their smiles make you want to come back every time💌
This cafe overall is incredible. Great coffee solid food and pastries. Very clean bathrooms and street parking was easy to find what more could you ask for for a Manhattan cafe . It’s pretty expensive but then again the quality is excellent . Lots of vegetarian and a few vegan options available . My egg croissant sandwich was delicious and croissant was definitely fresh. Tomato bisque soup honestly maybe the best tomato soup I’ve ever had
Have to put in a review on here. I initially came here finding a spot to sit and get a nice drink to sip. The drinks were really good, I came back another one or two times when I was to choose a coffee space, and with just those few visits I still get really great service and might've had some recognition, it's a wonderful place to stop by. BUT I DID NOT EXPECT THEIR BURGER & everything FRIES to be so FANTASTIC, and I highly recommend it as food (real tasty without being heavy, better than actual burger places). They've got so much figured out at this location, a wide and natural environment (the lighting, tall ceiling, plants, occasional musicians), wifi, people which can make you look forward to an order and a menu which you could stick with. (In case you're wondering, has good bathrooms available right nearby, same building, connected lobby area beside the unit)
Highly recommend the el barrio croissant, so yummy and the sauces were delicious. My honey oat milk latte was a little milk forward and not much of the honey flavor came out. Would try a cortado next time for less milk.
cute cafe!! lots of counter space to sit. half sit down restaurant other space is for people to do work or drink a coffee. disappointed there were not gluten free or vegan bakery items but coffee was good. got a cafe oulait that was somehow still $6? but was delicious and servers were super nice and friendly. pleasant space
First and foremost the ambiance of this café is beautiful. I love natural light and that’s mostly what you get here. Great choice of music, this place is such a vibe. Definitely a go to cafe shop for me now. The customer service is patient, welcoming and kind. I normally get nervous when ordering because I don’t know what get. The kind person taking my order explained the coffee specialties. They were so wonderful and informative. I ordered a mocha latte and “the burger w/ everything fries”. The fries were fresh and delicious. The burger was great and not heavy. Overall my experience was great here. You should check it out!
Today I visited Dear Mama for the first time. It’s located in a building owned by Columbia University and is absolutely gorgeous inside, with its glass windows and lush plants. The girl at the counter who took my order was super friendly. I ordered a large iced latte with oat milk, which came to $7.50. While the drink was good, it felt pricey, especially since their large (16 oz) is equivalent to a Starbucks grande. For food, I got a breakfast sandwich, but since I don’t eat bacon, I ordered it without the meat, making it just an egg and cheese croissant. At $13.50, the price felt hard to justify. A quick tip: specify how you’d like your eggs prepared, or they’ll default to fried over easy/medium (with runny yolks). That part was on me for not specifying I prefer over-hard eggs. Also, they don’t toast the croissant, which is an interesting choice. The combination of the soft croissant and runny yolks made the sandwich messy to eat, which was slightly inconvenient since the bathroom is down the hall in the foyer of the building. The food didn’t take long, I would say 5-10 minutes for the sandwich. When you walk in, the front half of the space is for counter orders and has seating for those who want to stay inside. There were lots of people working on laptops, and the bar seating has some outlets and hooks for bags. I didn’t look to see if there was wifi. The back half is designated for table service, although I think the menu is the same. Overall, the space is beautiful, but I’d only go back if I was feeling particularly indulgent because of the high prices. If I do return, it’ll probably be at night to try their cocktails or for a meet-up with a friend who appreciates a nice ambiance. They also feature an order-ahead option, which is convenient if you’re local or a student. Additionally, they sell their own merchandise, including coffee blends, which is a nice perk if you enjoy trying out new coffees. TLDR: Overall it’s expensive but if you like to treat yourself or can appreciate the space’s amenities this can be a nice spot to come work, especially since our neighborhood isn’t as saturated with nice coffee shops like these.
It is a beautiful coffee shop unlike any other regarding space and atmosphere! The reason this review is 4/5 instead of a 5 was the customer service. As a customer I’m often impressed when baristas and/or cashiers are warm with me, especially if I ask for a sample of cold brew or another coffee (premade). In my experience, baristas have been okay with this, and I have often purchased or not purchased a cold brew because of this. And baristas like those for example at (Drip Drop Coffee) have usually been okay if I don’t purchase. Because of the hesitancy of the barista at DM I felt compelled to purchase a latte to prove I wasn’t trying to get a pass at free coffee. In conclusion, I enjoyed the Iced latte, and the atmosphere is (obviously) gorgeous. Customer service was where I felt differently as I felt even nervous to get through my order. 😮💨 Finally, the price of the coffee was a bit more on the pricier side (almost $7 for the only available size), but I do feel as the taste was good in comparison to other coffees!
Really good in person experience. This is located in the back of a Columbia building but the staff is nice and everything I have had is great. The 3 stars are because they do not let you order any coffee or their baguette sandwiches after “breakfast” which just seems arbitrary. They are open, it’s 12:05. I can’t order a mcm and a cheese& prosciutto sandwich. WHY?!? That being said they do half priced bottles of wine mon-wed while most places in the area only do that on Monday so it’s a nice option to have in the afternoon… just wish I could also have a coffee.
there is almost no competition nearby and there is the fact one is eating in a renzo piano building. so….great location in a otherwise poor location area. prices are too high but the quality is also high. 6.53 for a small cappacino. ( i was just getting used to the usual 5.50. ) I will say it was perfect. by that i mean consistent foam and the milk was not boiled - a major faux paux for me. And 14 for a sandwich. This baguette style sandwich is about the same as at the chain paris baguette which charges 10. But still if you need to meet somebody for a lunch date and stay close by this is the place to do it. sit outside weather permitting and enjoy the remarkable space!
Overall not a bad place if you are in the area - big modern cafe with both non-table and table service with plenty of seats. Had the grilled cheese which was okay - pretty small for the price. Not a whole lot of food options for a place this size though. Pretty much the atmosphere is the reason to come here - not too many places with that modern feel in walking stance
misgendered me, calls everyone’s man, manager slams his hand on the counter aggressively next to me as a micro aggression after handing someone their order. this place used to be relaxed and was a good value. someone who’s really bad at feng shui sucked all of the life out of this place within the last year maximizing efficiency. big snake energy. makes sense if you take one look at the new management. it’s really sad. this used to be a beacon of the community. i would come here multiple times a week to work on my laptop and have spent thousands. the vibes here have a faint pulse and it’s fading. nice employees tho! the back kitchen are very nice. one barista is rude, condescending. the way this place was destroyed should be studied. maybe they’re making more money though and this is not a concern.. which might actually be sustainable given that they are having the same amount of traffic. this is no longer a place for artists and creativity. this place is surgical. those rejected by the community will burn it down to hell it’s warmth. this business/owner should be kicked out and the space given to a new/different cafe.
i used to come here every week the last couple of years and recommend this cafe to all my friends. i would always get a drink and buy a food item every hour i was there. but after the staff implemented the table service rule--expecting a tip when i literally had to go up to the counter and get my order, and even order more food--i just don't think this cafe is it anymore. towards the end of my visits, i've felt scared when ordering as im afraid the baristas will snap at me, and now reading the other reviews i can see that they might just be unhappy people working under scary management. even worse, the owner just seems like a really bitter person leaving rude replies on others' reviews. they must have a lot of time on their hands from getting rid of their loyal customers.
