Tastes like home cooked...but they need to offer suggestions...I got 2 curries and roti and separately and couldn't finish...there was no platter mentioned on the menu...few minutes later I saw another guy with a plater with 4 curries :/ one just has to ask...6 stars for the taste and 4 stars about the menu clarity...over 5 stars :)
Retro Indian songs, home like food, if you are a paratha fan, and miss ur mom's paranthe, this place is the one for you. The best part is Central park is nearby, so once you are done with ur parantha, you can walk and relax in ur food coma slump!!!!!
An affordable and basically always-open pure veg place that would be an essential refuge for students and gig workers in the UWS even if it wasn't also some of the best and most instantly recognizable North Indian home cooking you can find in New York. Get whatever they have and eat it with fragrant tawa roti and mango achaar.
This place has the feel of a classic side-of-the-road locals-only fast food place. The taste is distinctly and authentically south Indian. From the extra spice is the curried spinach (sarson ka saag) to the depth of starchiness the aloo paratha, the food is hearty and warm with a good flavor. I'm not going to say it's the cheapest food, but it's quite cheap; you can eat for $10-15. I recommend getting one paratha and a plate, or one paratha and a single curry. The spinach is lovely vegetal and spicy and buttery.
Original Indian food taste. Being Indian and dining in most Indian restaurants in nyc I assure you, this is how food taste in Indian homes (not the restaurant). High end restaurants alter the food taste to fit the customer’s taste which is way different than original taste. If you are craving for original Indian food taste this is the right place. Space is small and tables are less. Consider ordering online if it’s rush hours or expecting great hosting experience. Rate is very low and affordable. I will recommend 10$ Thali and/or 5$ aloo paratha with curd and mango pickle if you are eating Indian food first time. It’s not a fancy restaurant and it’s run by an old couple. Restaurant is open and all foods available from lunch time to late night. It’s a pure vegetarian restaurant, no meat and no wines/bear is served.
We ordered the $10 thali, which has 3 veggie or bean dishes that you choose with 2 Indian bread (roti). I appreciated that they had so many vegan beans and veggie options in the thali. I think only one was not vegan because it has paneer (cheese). My favorite were the kidney beans (rajma) and spinach (palak). My husband’s favorite was yellow lentils(dal). and eggplant. This ended up being our favorite place during our trip and we went twice. I would definitely recommend some oil on the rotis so it gives that buttery feel. The rotis were huge and handmade. The thali was so filling especially after a full day of walking and being tired. We also ordered to go which we ended up eating for breakfast both days. We ordered samosas, potato(allu) paratha and also mooli(radish) paratha. There was so much love in every bite and it really tasted like home food. :)
When in New York, you can sometimes find a hidden gem in the smallest places. We stumbled upon this place through google and it didn’t disappoint! This is one of the most authentic Indian food places we have ever had. This is home cooking in a restaurant. The depth of flavor is unmatched and is much better than other Indian restaurants we have tried in NYC. Ram, the head chef and owner, talked to my wife and I like a beloved uncle and treated us like family, even though we were only visiting. He told us stories on how he has students from Columbia visit him everyday because it is the only place they feel they can get a home cooked meal. We saw students there and a lot of cab drivers. Some cab drivers used the restroom and grabbed a chai (tea) on the way out. Some only used the restroom and left. Ram welcomed everyone with open arms and definitely showed the kindness in his heart. In 3 days, we tried all his curries, a couple of parathas, fresh homemade dahi (yogurt) and chai (definitely a highlight)! On our last day, we thanked him for his hospitality and great food. He gave me a hug and has definitely left a great impression on us!
Absolutely the best healthiest vegetarian home cooked food you can get anywhere! Spiced to perfection with abundance of cumin seeds! If you want to get rid of fat, cholesterol and have other health issues, Fresh Punjab vegan Indian food is the way to go! With fresh baked Roti you will get addicted ..
I was in the area and looking for something quick and veggie friendly. This place popped up on my Google search & reviews were good, so I gave it a try—Soooo glad I did! While the food was delicious, what really stood out was how incredibly nice and welcoming the staff was! The man helping me was soooooo nice and explained what each dish was, including ingredients (etc). Lots of traditional dishes served on a huge plater; I chose a plate of chickpeas, okra, lentils, and rice— and all of it for less than $10! I also ordered a fresh juice, which was delicious! And while I waited for my food, I enjoyed this beautiful bouquet— there was 1 at each table. Really happy I stopped by!
A one of a kind Indian restaurant in Manhattan ! Probably the only place you don’t feel like being ripped off. The plates are really large (they are not on the menu though, just go in an ask a platter) and for only 7$. You can choose up to 4 different toppings, and it’s spicy but not « hot ». I’m not good with hot food, and I usually don’t eat « indian-like » cuisine, but I’ve been there two times already and will go again! PS : best to order there and eat at home, the place is tiny and usually packed with regulars :)
Very authentic and affordable food. Very affordable by NY statdards. A wide variety of parathas. Very friendly guys. Place is very congested. It is best for "take aways".
The location was perfect for me because it was a block away from the place I was staying, this is the second time I try this place and for vegetarians is a great spot, you find a lot of Indian healthy and tasty options, there’s a few dishes like byriani that take time for them to make. The prices are reasonably cheap (but of course, it’s not a fancy place).
