I had one of the best lo main I had in a while. The staff was kind and nice, and it felt like home for a minute.
Short review/recommendations: XLB/Xiao Long Bao, Hot & Spicy Wontons (mild but excellent,) Honey BBQ Spare Ribs, and Shanghai Style Fried Noodles. Originally opened as a small restaurant in Chinatown on Lafayette, right off Canal, this spot serves Shanghainese and Cantonese food with a wide selection of dim sum. I was here with a very large group a good while back, and the friendly staff was very happy to accommodate all of us, with our group taking up two large tables and then some. They had the typical selection of beers and other soft drinks, but as per usual in less fancy Chinese spots, I stuck with tea. We first received a lot of dim sum. The Steamed Crabmeat & Pork Xiao Long Bao, which includes 6 pieces for $11.95, was above average. The skin was thin, the inside had a good, meaty filling, and the soup was well-flavored, mostly with pork and a bit of crab. It wasn't the best XLB I've had, but it got the job done. Also good was the Hot & Spicy Wonton, made with mixed pork and shrimp and served with hot oil and peanut sauce. These included 7 pieces, and the price at $10.75 was comparable to most Szechuan places. I wish the sauce had been more pungent, but it's a Shanghainese place, so that's a bit more typical. Again, the wrapper was thin, and the filling was generous. For the same price and portion size, you can also order Pork Dumplings, either steamed or fried. We got both, and I, as per usual, preferred the steamed variety. These were more standard but fine, with my definite preference being the other dumplings we had. There was also the Walnut Rock Shrimp. As we ordered 3, I presume it was around $12, but I don't remember the price, and it's not listed on the online menu or in any photos I can find on Yelp. I've never been a huge fan of this dish, as I generally only like the larger prawn variety found in many Cantonese places, where you can taste the shrimp better, but this was good. The batter was light and not overly sweet. We also got two of the siu mei/roasted meats. I don't see the Honey BBQ Spare Ribs listed, but I presume they were around $15 or $16. This was a very tasty version, with the ribs falling off the bone yet retaining some texture. Also, compared to most Chinese-American spots, the ribs weren't overly sweet. The BBQ Roast Pork for $15.45 was alright. I've had this dish from too many spots not to compare it to the better places around Chinatown and other neighborhoods, and this was just OK. I liked the mix of fatty and lean pieces, but the leaner ones weren't super flavorful and were also a bit dry. I wouldn't recommend this as much./ The remaining plates were larger. The Shanghai-Style Fried Noodle, available with a choice of protein, was good for $14.75. The noodles were the best part, with a good wok hei and a nice, slightly chewy texture. I probably would have preferred them with beef or pork, as there wasn't too much shrimp, but otherwise, no real complaints. The Young Chow Fried Rice for $15.25 was, in many ways, the opposite of the noodles. By comparison, the dish had plenty of protein, but the rice itself felt a bit lacking in flavor and wok hei. It was decent For a veggie, there were the Sauteed Snow Pea Leaves With Garlic for $22.75. The leaves were cooked nicely, and there was plenty of garlic flavor. In other words, nothing to complain about and nothing particularly notable, so it was a good standard variant. It was also the expected price for these usually expensive greens. Last was the Sizzling Ginger Beef in Basil Sauce, consisting of beef with ginger, scallion, and onion in basil sauce for $24.75. The beef was tender, but the sauce was a bit milder than expected. It was still tasty, and the portion, as expected for the price, was generous. This is a tasty Chinese place with a couple of excellent dishes. Bumping it up a good amount, given the neighborhood and the general quality as if this was closer to Chinatown, it would be closer to a lower 4/upper 3.
Its is delicious. I went with my little sister school trip. The food, staff, and overall the place gave me the best experience on this trip. I 100% recommend anyone to give this place a try.
Ate there for the first time today and I was welcomed immediately and was seated very quickly. I don't know who the specific woman is, but she was very alert and had great hospitality. The food portion was very generous and decent Manhattan prices. She was very attentive and communicated often with me to make sure I was okay. She's a talker too and a good listener :). Service was fast. Place is well organized and not overwhelming.
Came in for a quick snack while waiting on check in at my hotel. The service was great and very quick. I got the roast pork buns, which not only were huge, but so delicious. Definitely somewhere I'll be back to when I am back in the city!
Excellent Dumpling House has become one of my go-to spots in the neighborhood. The food is consistently great — classic Chinese dishes, generous portions, and perfect for those nights when I’m coming off a long workday and need something quick that the whole family will enjoy. What really sets this place apart is the service. There’s a cashier named Bowie who always greets me with a warm attitude and somehow remembers my order every time, even though I’m only in about once or twice a month. In a city as fast-paced as New York, that kind of friendliness makes a difference. I often bring colleagues here after meetings, and it has quickly become one of our regular lunch and dinner spots. Good food, great service, and a place you can rely on — highly recommended.
Excellent Dumpling lives up to its name. Last night on the way home from intense workday, took out simple steamed shrimp with mixed vegetables--not only was it all fresh and delicious but I couldn't get over the generous number of shrimp! My only regret is that I didn't get the steamed roast pork bun this time. Go! Oh, and you get a discount for paying cash. Excellent!
I've been coming here ever since it opened. The food here is delicious, and isn't too expensive. The flavors and textures of the food are amazing! My favorites have to be the Xiao Long Bao, Pork Lo Mein, Fried Pork Dumplings, and the Scallion Pancakes. If you're ever in the Chelsea area, I definitely recommend checking this place out!
The food was amazing! I got char siew fried rice, and the portion was clearly for 2 people (at least for my own). It was really tasty. The service was great, especially the lady at the cashier. I had a really good meal. The wait time was around 10 minutes, which was swift. Would come back to visit this :)
The staff here is incredibly friendly and kind. They were lovely and I would come back just to interact with them. Happily the food is also amazing! I got the cold noodles and a roast pork bun and both were delightful. The were the best I’ve had of both dishes in a long time! I can’t wait to come back and try more of the dishes. I came alone so didn’t want to over order so next time I bring friends!
Classic Chinese restaurant, which means it's perfect! Brightly lit, very clean, fast seating and service. The food is prepared quickly and served steaming hot or still sizzling. The dishes are really fresh, well prepared and taste great. Also, the serving portions are gigantic - I'll be eating leftovers for days! Highly recommend for the lunch special, or dinner out. You just gotta go!
I recently had an amazing lunch experience at the Excellent Dumpling House in the Flatiron District of New York. This restaurant has become my go-to spot every time I visit the city, and it never fails to impress me with their exceptional Chinese cuisine. Despite its small size, the Excellent Dumpling House offers an atmosphere that is cozy and welcoming. The staff is friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home. The highlight, however, is undoubtedly the food. I have tried numerous Chinese restaurants in New York, but none compare to the deliciousness that I experienced here. During my visit, I had the pleasure of ordering my favorite, the hot and sour soup. It was the perfect choice for the cold and snowy weather that day. The soup was served piping hot and had the ideal balance of tanginess and spiciness. Each spoonful was a burst of flavors that left me craving for more. The Excellent Dumpling House truly lives up to its name when it comes to their dumplings. The dumplings are freshly made and filled with a variety of flavorful ingredients. Whether you prefer steamed or pan-fried, each dumpling is a delightful treat that will leave you wanting to try every single one on the menu. Aside from their exceptional dumplings, the Excellent Dumpling House also offers a wide range of authentic Chinese dishes. From mouthwatering stir-fried noodles to succulent meat dishes, every item on their menu is a culinary masterpiece. I must also commend the Excellent Dumpling House for their excellent service. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff managed to provide prompt and attentive service, ensuring that every customer had a pleasant dining experience. If you're a fan of Chinese cuisine and find yourself in New York's Flatiron District, I highly recommend visiting the Excellent Dumpling House. It is a hidden gem that will surpass all your expectations and leave you with a memorable dining experience. Whether you're in the mood for a quick lunch or a hearty dinner, this restaurant has it all. Overall, my experience at the Excellent Dumpling House was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of friendly staff, cozy ambiance, and outstanding Chinese food makes this restaurant a must-visit. Don't miss out on the opportunity to indulge in the best Chinese food New York has to offer!
Walked by this place over the past few days of being at the Chelsea Savoy Hotel. Decided to eat here on our last night. They did not disappoint. The steamed dumplings were absolutely delicious. I had the beef and broccoli...the meat was so tender. My husband had the house noodle with beef. Homemade noodles were so good. We also had some other starters. Meal for two with all the samplings came to $57 and then they gave is 10% off. If we come back to NYC, we will eat here again.
Went on my birthday last year. The service and food were great. I really enjoyed myself. I was heartbroken I couldn't go on Christmas Day(my friends made sure to buy me pork Lo Mein).

Decent food, but the service needs a bit of a tune-up. The environment here is okay—it's definitely a spacious, "no-frills" kind of spot, which can be fine for a casual meal. However, the service was quite slow throughout our visit. We had a hard time flagging someone down, and it took a while just to get our check at the end. As for the food, it was a bit of a mixed bag. We tried the dumplings; they were decent enough but didn't quite hit "great" status for me. Specifically, the pan-fried dumplings were a bit oily, and I would have preferred a crispier finish. Overall, it's a fine spot if you aren't in a rush, but there’s definitely room for improvement in both the kitchen and the dining room.
Went there recently with a friend who was hankering for an eggplant dish. We were both pleasantly surprised. The people who run the place are extremely nice and helpful. The food was very good. And the prices were fair.
Great neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The service was very attentive. All the servers help all the tables. The soup dumplings were really big and the dumpling sauce was really good - not too vinegary or salty. The spare ribs had a great flavor. The scallion pancakes had a good flavor but were too thick which made them more doughy rather than crispy. The sauteed string beans was my favorite dish. They were so flavorful and delish.

Wish I could give zero stars. The delivery person was vulgar. On top of that, he demanded a tip. What do I look like? A bank? Jesus Christ. Also, the lunch special is not filling at all. Like, how do you expect people to be satisfied if you give a plate of food in moderation? Will never order from this place again. Terrible.
Very disappointed with my experience here, especially coming here after reading all the great reviews. First of all, the food was not good. It wasn’t awful. But comparing it to other Chinese restaurants in the city, it was pretty bad. Second, the interior was very shabby and rundown. Usually, this doesn’t bother me as long as the food is great. But that wasn’t the case. And finally, there were a couple of employees just sleeping on the tables. I understand if they were taking their breaks, but having staff members visibly taking naps on the tables where customers eat, is very unprofessional.
