Very nice high end Japanese steakhouse. Prepare yourself for everything on the menu to be expensive but completely delicious melt in your mouth amasing. Service was great, food was great, lots of great sake as well. You can sit at the bar and get a limited menu if the restaurant is full and you'll still get a pretty epic meal.
I absolutely love this restaurant. Every time I come the food is fabulous and the service is great! Our waiter Ryu is always fantastic as well as the rest of the staff at Yakiniku futago! And best way to finish the meal off is with a lychee beer!
This is a very nice BBQ place to enjoy dinner! The place was very busy but they were able to seat us at the bar. Valentin and Jonathan were our bartenders, and recommended a few selections that are very good! We will be coming back for sure!
Beautiful decor, amazing service from our water Kai, and the food was the best I have ever had. The beef had a beautiful flavor, a texture soft like butter; best beef cut I have ever had. You will not regret going here.
I have been coming to Futago for about five years and consistently keep returning for its top quality food, service and cleanliness. Today was exceptionally well thanks to our server, Ryu. He patiently explained the new All You Can Eat lunch tiers, promptly brought us all of our courses, got my name on the Wall of Fame and did it all with a smile. We will be coming back and asking for Ryu every time. Highly recommend!
The meats at Yakiniku BBQ were really fresh and flavorful, and it was fun grilling everything at the table. The sauces and sides were great too. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was lively without being too loud. Definitely a spot I’d come back to!
We've been here a couple of times and the food never disappoint! We got the special wagyu this time and the server cooked it for us. Every part of that meat was so delicious! We also tried the cold noodle this time and it's a perfect refresher after the jbbq. The dessert matcha shaved ice was really good too. 10/10 would recommend and would definitely come back again!
The food was really amazing. I was with my friend who lives in Tokyo and was also really impressed. I was served by April and the was perfect at every point, really professional and smile all the time. Highly recommended.
We came here for restaurant week and got what was on the menu for that and it didn't disappoint. Although it was definitely less than we thought it was going to be, it was a good tasting for an introduction to the restaurant. We ended up also getting the thick cut tenderloin which was very delicious and well prepared in front of us by the waiter. It seems like this place specializes in wagyu so that's what we'll get next time we come back. Overall a really good experience.
This was an absolutely incredible meal. The quality of meats was exceptional, and the flavors were spectacular. Ryu was so helpful with our food selections and made our experience perfect, and we can’t wait to come back and see him. Great dinner experience !
Best BBQ by far! The chef knew every ingredients they dealt with. The meat was cut perfectly. Highly recommend the signature cuts - thick-cut tenderloin steak and thick-cut beef tongue were beyond expectation. The tenderloin was well balanced with the garlic butter sauce. The waiter served us was very knowledgable to explain the grill technics as well as how the sauce was made. It’s also a surprise they offered full dinner menu for weekend lunch. BTW, it’s more like Japanese & Korean fusion BBQ (not a problem but interesting to see they use scissors, serve bibimbap, serve lettuce for Wagyu)
I have come twice with friends. Both times Riu attended us and he was absolutely perfect. His knowledge, suggestions, service, and timely fasion was amazing. The food has been high quality and delcious. I love this restaurant and was recommended by two Japanese friends. I highly would advise people toncome and try and hopefully Riu will attend you and make you feel at home like we were :)
We dined at the bar and Johnathan and Scher and they took very good care of us. We had sake, wagyu, kimchi, shrimp tempura and so much more. I asked Johnathan for all his suggestions and they were absolutely delicious. The beer is so good and so smooth. I have never had a beer like that before. I highly suggest this spot 10 out of 10.
I had an exceptional dining experience at Yakiniku Futago. The cocktails were fabulous, and the high-quality meats were incredibly delicious. I highly recommend trying one of their treasure boxes and then exploring their a la carte options. Ryu, our server, was outstanding. He guided us through the entire meal, cooked our meat to perfection, and engaged us in delightful conversation. I highly recommend Yakiniku Futago to anyone. The imported meats are of top-notch quality, and I also appreciated the Korean influences in some of their menu items.
This is my favorite steakhouse in the world by far I’ve been going here for maybe 4 years Way before “wagyu” was on every steak menu in USA. Love the authenticity met with laid back nature of the place. Suggest the spicy bone marrow soup Place is a true gem Very clean Excellent service Family / friends/ everyone friendly Something on the menu for everyone and everyone always blown away by the experience! Look forward to going back each time
I never write Google reviews but there is no way I couldn’t for Futago. The food is exceptional, the service immaculate, and if you are lucky enough to have Ryu, the experience feels like you hit the lottery. Have come back 20+ times and will NEVER stop. If 50 years from now it closes, I will be laying my elderly body in the doorframe of this restaurant waiting to be bulldozed alongside it in solidarity.
*Fresh, High-Quality Ingredients* The ingredients were undeniably fresh and of the highest quality. *Thoughtfully Designed Menu* The menu was nicely laid out, with options for half servings – a thoughtful touch that allowed us to sample a variety of dishes without committing to full portions. *Top-Notch Service* The service was top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff who were happy to answer questions and make recommendations.
Outstanding Japanese BBQ experience! The beef tongue is incredible, perfectly sliced, tender, and full of flavor. The kalbi is equally impressive, with beautiful marbling that melts in your mouth. Btw our waitress April is also amazing!!! If you’re craving quality yakiniku in NYC, this spot is a must-visit.
JD our server took great care of us made great suggestions. Food was delicious and cocktails were great. The bartender was also great. Highly recommend!
The food was delicious, but the portion is kind of small, so you have to order a little more . The meat lover dreams. It's like delicious melting beefy steaks. I've been coming here for years now, so needless to say, much money was spent here lol but it's worth it . Last night, our serve was Lee he was really sweet, tentative, and kind .
The sushis were excellent and service was good! A good improvement would be to let only some people at the table do restaurant week menu — some may not eat meat while others may like to try the restaurant week many
4.5 / 5.0 - I’d had Yakiniku Futago on my list for ages and finally came for lunch yesterday with a friend. I didn’t even know they were open for lunch until recently and I’m guessing it’s not widely known because it wasn’t super busy. It is on the pricier side, but was so worth it. For lunch, they have Regular and 1/2 size. The Regular is double the price of the 1/2 size and comes with 8 slices of meat—the 1/2 size comes with 4. My friend and I decided to get one of each, so we could each have 6 slices. In addition to the BBQ, they had rice sets and other “add-on’s” like soup and salad, as well as other appetizer dishes and “beef sushi.” We ordered: - 1 Prime Short Rib (Kalbi) / Regular ($30+) - 1 Prime Short Rib (Kalbi) / 1/2 ($15+) - 2 Rice Sets ($5+ each) - 1 Japanese Style Cold Noodles ($8+) The regular size is served with salad, and the rice set included Japanese steamed rice, bone marrow egg soup and namul. Everything was so delicious and the meat just melted in our mouths. It is a spacious restaurant and the tables were spaced out, which was nice. And there is good ventilation right above the grill, so it didn’t get smokey at all. $40+ is a bit expensive for lunch, especially for the amount of food you get, but it is high quality meat. If you love yakiniku and have never been, I highly recommend you give it a try!
This is one of the best Japanese BBQ places I’ve tried. Dinner was an amazing experience. The meats were upscale, the choices were outstanding and so was the taste. It’s a BBQ but the staff cooks for you table side that way it’s cooked to perfection. It was pricey to say the least but worth it for a splurge night! Waygu A5 was on point!!
Excellent Japanese steakhouse. Went here the other day for Restaurant Week and everything was excellent. Drinks were phenomenal, favorite being the Late Blossom. The peach beer was also pretty good, good balance of peach flavor without being too sweet. Appetizers were delicious. Shishito peppers had a little spice but nothing crazy, wagyu slice melted like butter and tasted great, the shrimp was probably the favorite since it had a unique taste that was very good. Main course was the combo meats. They bring out the marinated meat and you cook in the grill at your table. It was all excellent with the Harami and Wagyu being favorites. Dessert was a type of pudding that was nice and creamy.
We had an incredible dining experience at Yakiniku Futago Chelsea thanks in large part to our amazing server Ryu and the entire team in this beautiful restaurant. He walked us through the menu thoroughly and offered thoughtful recommendations with spot-on alcohol pairings. Presentation is a show in itself with the daily specials unveiling inside a treasure box. Each cut of meat is as flavorful as it is beautifully marbled. Standouts include the A5 Wagyu, tender beef tongue, and expertly marinated meats that are grilled tableside to perfection by Ryu. Their refreshing watermelon shaved ice dessert, made with freshly frozen watermelon is the perfect way to finish the meal. You will regret it if you skip this dessert.
You don’t need to fly to Japan to enjoy Wagyu this spot brings that incredible flavor right to you! The taste was amazing! The garlic rice is legendary (a must-try!), the spicy soup was spot on, and the matcha dessert was light and paired perfectly after all those dishes. And Sezgi, the manager, with her warm smile, great tips, and deep knowledge, became our second reason to come back! Chef’s recommendation!!you won’t regret it!
Had an amazing experience here! The food was top-notch — some of the best Japanese BBQ I’ve had. Everything had that authentic Japanese vibe, from the flavors to the atmosphere. Shoutout to our server, KO, who gave us the best service — super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Will definitely be coming back!
April was absolutely fantastic! She was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. She knew the menu well, gave great recommendations. She offered us tiramisu and it was super delicious. Her service really made our experience enjoyable, and we’ll definitely be coming back. Thank you for the excellent service April!
We had an amazing dining experience at Yakiniku Futago! The food was absolutely delicious — high-quality meat, perfectly seasoned, and cooked just right. The atmosphere was cozy yet lively, perfect for a night out with friends. A special shout-out to our server, Kai, who made the evening even better. Kai was incredibly attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. His service made us feel truly welcomed and taken care of. We’ll definitely be coming back — highly recommend this place to anyone who loves great yakiniku and exceptional service!
We’ve lived in Chelsea for years…and tonight we found our restaurant!!! What a fabulous experience - from the welcoming bartender to our beautiful tableside chef/server “April”. April explained the entire menu, suggested what to order as “first timers” and cooked us a sumptuous meal of assorted grilled beef cuts. We added fresh, crunchy spinach salad in a special house dressing with crispy garlic, crispy garlic rice from a hot stone and wonderfully savory potato salad with fish roe and crumbled potato chips. The entire staff is friendly and helpful to all guests - delightful! Thank you, April! We’ll see you again soon!!!
this is one of the best meals i’ve had in a very long time. everything we ordered was phenomenal. But the true brilliance of the evening was Jonathan and Valentín. They worked with a level of dedication that is rare to find. Their attention to detail, hard work, and effort to achieve the highest of quality made their “service” feel more like stewardship. You would have thought they owned the restaurant with how much they cared about each customer’s experience. 100/10. when i start my restaurant i will be scouting them.
We had an absolutely incredible experience at Yakiniku Futago, and a huge part of that was thanks to our server, Ryu. From the moment we sat down, Ryu was attentive, warm, and genuinely enthusiastic about guiding us through the menu. His recommendations were spot-on, and he made the whole meal feel special. He also shared stories which enhances the experience! The food itself was outstanding. The short rib skirt steak was perfectly marbled and grilled to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The garlic rice was unbelievably good
If you are a regular Joe like me and want to feel like a star or an important figure and, most importantly, have your drinks and food keep coming to your table without delay Ryu is your guy. Between you and me, I heard the famous singer J Balvin comes here often with his family, and this is the only server he requests. The food at this place is delicious the premium horumon melts in your mouth. Five stars for sure. I also want to mention Himan, who made sure my water was always refilled, and last but not least my bartender, Shere. With a team like this, you really feel taken care of. They’re like the Navy SEALs of restaurants. Thank you, guys. I really appreciate this.
I recently dined at Futago for my friends 35th birthday and had an incredible experience. The standout of the night was the Wagyu A5 steak—perfectly marbled, unbelievably tender, and packed with rich flavor. Every bite was a reminder of why this cut and restaurant has its reputation. The service was just as amazing too The staff (especially Kai) was courteous, attentive, and genuinely focused on making the meal enjoyable. They anticipated needs without being intrusive, helped us cook our food to medium rare and made the whole experience feel smooth and welcoming. The Matcha Tiramisu was surprisingly good and a unique flavor, I’ll be back. Between the exceptional steak and the top-tier service, Futago is absolutely worth a visit. I’ll definitely be back.
I had an amazing dining experience at Futago! The food was absolutely delicious. A special shoutout to KO for the incredible service! KO was not only attentive and professional, but also warm and genuinely welcoming. He took the time to explain each dish, offered great recommendations, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the meal. Highly recommend Futago for both the fantastic food and the top-notch service. Will definitely be coming back!
Yakiniku Futago Chelsea is next-level Japanese BBQ with a sleek, modern vibe that’s perfect for food lovers who appreciate premium cuts and flawless grilling. The atmosphere is polished but inviting, great for everything from date nights to group dinners. Their wagyu is melt-in-your-mouth buttery, and every piece is grilled right at your table to perfection. The sides and dipping sauces are thoughtfully curated to complement the rich flavors without overpowering them. Service is attentive and knowledgeable, making the whole experience smooth and elevated. If you want Japanese BBQ that’s both luxurious and approachable, Futago Chelsea is a must-try.
Outstanding food and service. While I was only able to try the bar menu and food (which differs a bit from the restaurant menu), the quality and care that goes into the offerings here is obvious from the start. Valentin, the bartender, provided exceptional service and recommended some great choices. The kimchi is the best I’ve ever had, and the garlic rice is not far behind. Overall, I highly recommend.
Our first date of 2025 at Yakiniku Futago Chelsea was absolutely fantastic! From appetizers to dessert, every dish was crafted to perfection. The highlight of our meal was the Beef Platter, featuring a heavenly combination of A5 Wagyu and US Prime Beef—each bite was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The ambiance was cozy and elegant, and the staff were attentive, making the experience even more memorable. Highly recommend this place for a special occasion or simply to treat yourself to an unforgettable meal! We’ll definitely be back!
Didnt have the ribeye I wanted but everything we had was delicious. Wagyu cooked to perfection. Our server April was knowledgeable and attentive. Great service.
Went here for my birthday last week and wanted something a little fancy but also with fire, smoke, and grilled meat — so Japanese BBQ felt like the perfect fit. This place totally delivered on the upscale vibes while still giving you the full BBQ experience. Pricey? Yes. Worth it for a special night? Also yes. We showed up around 8:30 p.m. on a Wednesday and the place wasn’t crowded at all. Lots of tables open, which was surprising honestly, but great for us. The staff was super nice — very smiley, very helpful — and they cook everything for you which adds to the relaxed feel. We got one of their recommended sets for two, which included 3 or 4 different types of meat (one of them was wagyu!), and yes — the meat quality was chef’s kiss. Like, straight-from-the-fridge presentation with the marble still glistening. Super fresh, super buttery. They offered higher-end cuts too (like that ultra-marble wagyu), but we didn’t go all-in on that. Maybe next time. On top of the meat set, we also ordered: • 🍄 Mushrooms with cheese – SO good. Highly recommend. • 🌶 Spicy Korean soup – Again, amazing. A great spicy-soupy balance and perfect on the side. • 🍸 Cocktails – I had the lychee mojito and it was refreshing, not too sweet. Would definitely get it again. Final bill for 2 people: ~$350+ for one main meat set, two small dishes, and 2 cocktails each. Not cheap by any means — this is definitely a special occasion spot, not your casual weeknight dinner. But the quality, service, and presentation all felt top-tier. And honestly, I left feeling full and happy, which is all you can ask for on your birthday, right? Would I go again? Yes, but probably for another celebration or if I’m trying to impress someone who loves meat 😅
Very unique dining experience. We were scheduled to go during restaurant week but I came down with a terrible cold and had to reschedule. The dining experience is very different. We ordered grilled vegetables, filet , tempura roll and truffle fries. The grilled food is cooked in front of you on a grill built into the table. Everything was fresh and delicious. The service was excellent. We went early so it wasn’t crowded and it was easy to converse.
Came here to celebrate a birthday for restaurant week, paid $60 per person for a three course prix fixe and received amazing food, service, and experience! The staff explained each dish but was not overbearing. Their kimchi was amazing, authentic Korean style as opposed to the more mild Japanese style. The meat was very high quality and we had fun grilling it ourselves, we didn’t have any food smell on our clothes after. The matcha tiramisu was amazing and they gave us a complimentary dessert with candle for the birthday! We were worried it wasn’t going to be enough food but we were very full after. The food was thoughtfully coursed out, so it was filling.
We came here for the All You Can Eat Option ($60 each). They offer a good selection for that price and the food was delicious! Service was also great, the staff was very attentive and helpful. Bathrooms were also very clean.
I had a fantastic dining experience at Futago Yakiniku in NYC. The quality of the meat was excellent, everything was fresh, well-marinated, and perfectly suited for grilling. The atmosphere was lively but still comfortable, making it a great spot for both friends and date nights. A special shout-out to JD, who provided outstanding service throughout the meal. He was attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the menu. He checked in at just the right moments, helped us with grilling tips, and made the whole experience feel welcoming and smooth. Great food, great service, and a great overall vibe. I’ll definitely be coming back and would highly recommend this place — especially if you’re lucky enough to be served by JD!
Fantastic experience! The service was outstanding our server he is a gentleman named Kai did an amazing job explaining and serving each and every dish with care. The food arrived quickly without feeling rushed. The meat was incredibly tender, literally melting in the mouth. Everything was perfectly done. Highly recommend this place for both the food and the service!
We came here for a team lunch and had a great time. The ambience was amazing, and the steaks were outstanding. You can cook them live on the grill, and the meat was well-marinated, juicy, and full of flavor. There was also a great variety of sides and salads. Special thanks to Kai for the amazing service and warm hospitality. I would definitely come back again — highly recommended!
My fav BBQ place! I had wagyu before in another place, I thought wagyu is not my thing is too oily. Until I had waguy sushi here. Oh it is a new discover. One of the servers April recognized me on my second and third visit :) she is nice, she introduced me the wagyu that I end up enjoying, she said she is like me that can’t have too oily food, she recommended me 10s Wagyu, that has really amazing tastes. In addition, The tenderloin, us prime skirt, thin cut beef tongue, jidori chicken is great! April also recommended mocha tiramisu to me while I’m thinking between matcha ice cream or matcha tiramisu. April said matcha tiramisu has matcha ice cream in the bottom. The tiramisu is innovative, just as I thought the bitter dark green matcha is a layer of the cake, is actually the matcha ice cream! I am a person who prefer non-sweet desserts, is hard to find in the states, I found it here, the tiramisu has a good blend of sweet cake and strong matcha ice cream! I ordered over restaurant week, so they offered a $35 uni Wagyu ju bowl (as in my pic)
Yukiniku Futago in NYC is an amazing destination for Wagyu lovers 🥩🔥. The Wagyu beef hot pot is extremely tender, rich, and flavorful without feeling greasy or heavy at all 😍. The vegetables, mushrooms, and tofu are very fresh and delicious 🍄🥬. The highlight is definitely the sushi 🍣✨ — incredibly fresh, premium quality, and so flavorful that it doesn’t even need any sauce. Every piece melts in your mouth. On top of the great food, the service is very nice, attentive, and quick 💯👏. The staff is friendly, professional, and always ready to help, making the whole dining experience even better. Highly recommended if you’re in NYC 🇯🇵✨
Absolutely loved my experience at Yakiniku Futago! The meat quality was amazing — super tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Everything was grilled perfectly and melted in my mouth. One of the staff April was incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole dining experience feel warm and welcoming. Portions were great and the atmosphere was cozy. Definitely one of the best yakiniku spots in NYC. Can’t wait to come back!
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and 10/10 recommend! We got the wagyu tasting menu and it is definitely worth it—everything is so flavorful and we ended up taking several to-go boxes home because we were so full. Our server Ryu was also amazing and so attentive! He gave wonderful recommendations on which sauces paired with which meats and also selected a sake that was delicious when warmed. Overall a great experience and would absolutely return
My husband and I dined at the bar and the bartenders Scher and Johnathan gave wonderful suggestions for food. We had sake dassai 39, wagyu Toro, assorted kimchi and namul, shrimp tempura hand rolls and some other items on rthe main menu. I asked Johnathan for all his suggestions and they were absolutely delicious. The beer is so good and so smooth. I have never had a beer like that before. I highly suggest this spot. The dessert is also amazing i had the seasonal shaved ice with mango. I will definitely be back.
Yakiniku Futago in Chelsea is one of the best Japanese BBQ spots I’ve been to in the city. We tried their $75 all-you-can-eat lunch deal, which included US Wagyu, premium Japanese cuts, garlic rice, spicy noodles, desserts, and more. The meats were tender and flavorful without needing any sauce, and the garlic rice was honestly one of the highlights—perfectly seasoned and comforting. The meal also came with appetizers like karaage, fries, and kimchi, making it feel like a complete dining experience rather than just BBQ. Overall, the quality, variety, and atmosphere made it well worth the price, and I’d definitely come back again.
Had such a wonderful experience here for their AYCE lunch deal! There are 3 options- we had to lowest priced tier at $60 PP. there are apps that you can choose from on top of all the meat. You start pff with a sampler and then you can order whatever you like for round 2. The meat as always is so delicious and perfectly seasoned! I was so stuffed and had such a great meal. The service was also amazing.
We tried their AYCE $60 Japanese bbq menu and it was so good! They give you one of everything for the appetizers and meats so you can try everything before your order additional orders of the items you like! The meat quality is really good I really liked the Kalbi eye and us prime meats. The side dishes were also delicious!
Went to Yakiniku Futago Chelsea for dinner and really enjoyed the experience. The space has a laid-back vibe with big tables and inset grills, perfect for gathering around and cooking right at the table. I went with the US wagyu set, which came with a nice selection of cuts to grill at the table. The meal included plenty of sides, and I especially liked the potato salad—the roe on top added a nice flavorful crunch. The meat itself was high quality and cooked perfectly by my server. Next time I’d skip the sushi, which wasn’t great—the rice was packed way too tightly, and the sake was a bit sweet for my taste. But apart from those minor misses, it was an enjoyable meal.
I came for restaurant week lunch and it was a decent deal but I don’t think I will come back otherwise for the regular menu. We did the smaller upgrade and I did enjoy the experience, the meat was quite good but nothing is that special about it in comparison to other Japanese bbq places. The meat is also all marinated, so it’s not that easy to distinguish whether it was more elevated of an experience. Service was also honestly all over the place. Overall, if you can come for restaurant week might be worth it otherwise would not be a must go for me. I did enjoy the matcha tiramisu, which was quite good.
Nice high-end Japanese/Korean barbecue steakhouse. The bill can add up quickly if you don’t pay attention, dinner for four was $206 before tip and without drinks. The service was excellent and if you are a regular diner, you even get (after 10 visits) a customized pair of gold colored barbecue tongs engraved with your name. The wait staff will assist you with grilling certain meats or will give you specific instructions on how long to grill each item. Everything we had was delicious, beautifully seasoned or marinated and cooked to perfection. We loved the chicken, the pork neck, the dragon kalbi and more.
All I can say is that my stomach is having a party right now! The food was absolutely delicious and the service even better! April was such a doll who was extremely informative, friendly, and a wonderful waitress who made our experience even better! This is definitely going to be our new spot!
I enjoyed the lunch BBQ set—it was great to try a variety of meats, and everything was very tasty. We also ordered extra items like beef tongue and cold noodles. The portions were a bit small, but the flavors were excellent. I especially loved the cold noodles at the end of the meal—they were refreshing and delicious. The restaurant was quiet, clean, and had a nice atmosphere. The Japanese waiters provided great service. However, a beer was mistakenly brought to our table even though we didn’t order it (since it was lunch), and we ended up paying for it. The menu had a good variety of appetizers and meats to choose from. Compared to Korean BBQ, the portions felt a bit smaller, but overall, it was a satisfying experience. I’m looking forward to trying their dinner next time!
Really sad to see the reduction in quality. Things just changed overall. I used to see it as something special; expensive but def worth the price. I went again recently and now it has just descended to any ktown bbq you can get with a higher price range. i used to think im paying 300 for something thats worth 600. Now i feel im paying 400 for something thats worth 300… and music is way too loud for wide tables, really hard to talk in a calm voice; had to keep raising my voices to be audible. not very enjoyable also service wise, they kept trying to signal us to pay for the bill and start leaving granted we are there for a few hours, but still not expecting this kind of behaviors: (1) it is supposed to be a nice place and (2) half of the tables were empty so there was no reason for them to turn the tables. Plus, i only got my water filled twice over the 3 hours we were there…. my water cup was empty for most of it. please bring back the old futago
It was my first visit to the restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. I’m no way considering myself a regular to fine dining. This experience was very different than what I was expecting. I ordered a “late blossom” cocktail for the drink and the special “treasure chest” meat special for the entree. I did enjoy the drink that I ordered. The cocktail was well-balanced for my taste. The meat was good but not much different than what I could get elsewhere for wagyu beef. I am no expert in Japanese restaurants and I am not sure what exactly a Japanese steakhouse is supposed to feel like but this place didn’t fit into the picture I had in mind. It felt like it had some mixture of Korean items incorporated into the Japanese menu. The price was too high to justify the food and the service. I was expecting a service that would leave an impression but it was just average. I also felt like I had to fight for the staff’s attention to order. It just felt like a restaurant up charging for the location but didn’t offer much else than an expensive bill. The impression I got from the visit was not that of great food but a restaurant that upsells an average menu item at a high price.
We had the $165 per person A5 Wagyu experience, with a bottle of sake and sake flights. No complaints on food and ambience, they were actually excellent. However, I believe that a 90min time limit for a table spending over $800 is inappropriate - bbq in itself takes longer based on the cooking time. We were still enjoying the rest of the meal and the sake, while still waiting for the dessert portion of the experience when they basically let us know at the 90min that we are at limit and should leave the table. Probably won’t be back based on overall experience - for that value, there are plenty of top restaurants in NYC offering great quality A5 Wagyu without a time limit of those sorts where you can actually enjoy the meal and experience without being rushed.
I’ve been going to Yakiniku Futago for years. Whenever I crave Japanese BBQ or friends ask for recommendations, this has always been my go-to and a must-visit spot. However, I felt quite uncomfortable during my visit today. We arrived slightly early at 7:45 PM and were told to come back at our reservation time of 8:00 PM. That was completely fine. But when we returned at 8:00 PM, we were then told the table was still not ready and we had to wait another 10–15 minutes. This was disappointing because the purpose of making a reservation is to ensure proper timing and table readiness. A typical high-end restaurant should allow enough buffer time between seatings to clean and prepare the table for the next guests. We had also booked a private room, but the service did not meet expectations. The server was not attentive in helping us grill, and I ended up cooking most of the meat myself. The grill plate was not changed in time, which caused the meat to become overcooked. I was looking forward to a nice dinner with my girlfriend, but the experience felt rushed and unattended — especially disappointing for a $300 per person dinner. Unfortunately, I will not be returning and will be looking for other Japanese BBQ options.
Over priced "Japanese" (really Korean) restaurant with great service and nice atmosphere. Don't be surprised spending $150 per person. The wagyu sushi was great especially after you took the rice off (reverse sushi). The salad was trash- badly cut. The rest of the meat was fine - but you do all the work. Overall- small amounts of food for ridiculous prices.
New Review Oct. 2023: So unfortunate that I have to write this review but I don’t want anyone else to experience this and hope that the restaurant picks things back up. This is the first time that we were disappointed. First, the man who brought the food to us was rude and not communicative. He rudely gestured to us to move things around and then dropped our fries into the grill. Then, our chicken appetizer was completely cold. They offered to give us a new one but we had already eaten the first one. We were charged for the cold and dry chicken. The food isn’t as good as it used to be. The experience was unfortunately really unorganized as there were other things that were also bothersome, but not enough to mention. For the price we are paying, we pay for the experience, not just the food. The treasure box also didn’t have any “smoke,” if you know, you know. Otherwise, our waitress was nice and explained everything well. We hope that today was just on off day. Super disappointing as this is one of our favorite spots. Original Review: FIVE STARS. My family and I have been here dozens of times! Never have anything to complain about.
I’ve been to Yakiniku Futago so many times, and this is the first time that I’ve been disappointed. The restaurant week deal came with a mere 9 thin slices of meat. We felt like we would have gotten much more meat for the same price if we had just ordered ala carte. It was underwhelming to say the least.
TLDR: very small portions that taste good. The lunch AYCE is probably better. Overall, the food tastes good but nothing exceptional among the many competitors in the city. Portions, however, are incredibly small. When the menu says "serves 2-3" on certain items, it will actually serve 1/2 a normal person. I ordered a 3 varieties box, truffle fries, marinated short rib (a la carte), and hot stone garlic rice for 2 people -- that wasn't enough for just me.
My boyfriend and I had a reservation at 1pm but waited for more than 15 minutes to get seated even with tables available. They also sat another table who arrived after us, and it seemed they were very behind as they were rushing us to finish dessert in the end. We tried the restaurant week menu with Wagyu ($30 extra), but all the meat was marinated with the same sauce. The meat tasted very similar and was definitely not worth the extra cost. The kimchi was flavorful but we only were served a single portion.
Extremely Disappointed – Long-Time Customer Let Down I’ve been a loyal customer for a long time, but after my recent experience, I’m honestly shocked. I ordered the Wagyu Uni Rice via Uber Eats for $120, expecting the same high quality I’ve come to love from this place. Instead, what I received was far from acceptable. The uni smelled off and had a strong, unpleasant odor, making it completely inedible. For a dish at this price point, there’s absolutely no excuse for this kind of quality, especially considering it's a raw ingredient that needs to be handled with extreme care. I never thought I’d be writing a negative review for a restaurant I used to trust, but this felt like a total rip-off. If this is how they treat delivery customers now, it’s really disappointing. Please do better.
Let me just say that before the bill came to the table, the review would have been 3 or 4 star overall. So please allow me explain what happened. We ordered a bottle of Ichigo Frasco (180$ a bottle), the bartender came over and apologized saying that they only had a half of bottle of it, so he could give us the half bottle and give us half a bottle of the cheaper Ichigo Kurobin (120$ a bottle). Which wasn’t a big deal, we told him it’s all good just give us the half bottles. So half a bottle of a 180$ bottle and half a bottle of a 120$ bottle, what should the bill come out to for those drinks? 150$ would be expected right? Half of 180 is 90 half of 120 is 60, 90+60=150. So then how much did they try to charge? That’s right 325$. Now how would that be possible? If we only got half a bottle of each and both bottles are less than 200$ on the menu. That’s right they charged us for 5 glasses for each of the half bottles, which means we are paying 200$ for the first half bottle and 125$ for the 2nd half bottle which is more than a fresh bottle of each. We explained this to our server, and he went to get his manager. The manager came out and told us she gave us a 65$ discount and tried to explain that because it’s per glass, we would be paying for more than a bottle. Which make sense if that was what we ordered. We ordered a full bottle of the 180$ shochu and was offered the solution of half bottles because they didn’t have it, and now we have to pay more because of it? How does that make any sense? Your bartender was the one to offer it to us, had we known that we had to pay extra despite getting less we would have never accepted it. The manager continued to justify the pricing and said we got 75% of the first bottle and the bartender had miscounted, but that is all irrelevant as we were shown the half a bottle before our meal, and even if it was 75% of the bottle why would the guests be punished because you didn’t have the proper liquor inventory?!? She ended up discounting another 40$ netting to a total discount of 105, resulting my party paying 220$ for 150$ worth of liquor according to their menu. It was late and my birthday so we didn’t fuss anymore, we paid the over priced bill and left, sadly for the server we discounted the amount from his tip. This was the first time a restaurant actually scammed me, and the first time I ever left less than 18% tip.(I know it wasn’t the servers fault but this was just ridiculous)
We were really disappointed with our latest visit. We ordered the “10-second Wagyu,” which clearly stated on the menu that it comes with an egg yolk sauce. When the dish arrived without it, we asked why, and were told the restaurant had run out. However, no one informed us about this when we placed the order. The server was very nice and offered us a $2 discount, but it didn’t make up for the fact that we ordered this dish specifically for the Wagyu + egg yolk combination. Without it, the entire essence of the dish was gone, and the discount didn’t really address that loss. We also ordered the short ribs and skirt steak. After trying them, we realized they were full of connective tissue and almost impossible to chew, and the seasoning was overly salty. After giving feedback, the server kindly brought us a dessert, which we appreciated. We used to love this place — the food was amazing before, and we always looked forward to coming back. We’re not sure what happened this time, but overall, it was disappointing. Food quality this visit was a 0/5, and the 1 star is only for nostalgia.
Complete ripoff! I used to love this place and came here all the time. It used to feel special, with great quality meat, fair portions, and that authentic yakiniku experience. But over the years the prices have kept going up while the portions and quality keep shrinking. The all-you-can-eat is especially disappointing now. The meat isn’t even red or fresh looking anymore, it’s full of fat, tendon, and drenched in heavy marinades that feel like they’re trying to hide how old it is. It’s completely different from the meat you get when ordering an entrée. Even the cold noodles, which used to be crisp and refreshing, have gone downhill. They were overcooked and slimy this time, and the broth tasted old. They used to cost $5, now it’s $9, but somehow everything about it got worse. It honestly makes me sad to see how far this place has fallen. Futago used to be one of my favorite yakiniku spots, but it doesn’t feel honest or premium anymore. No wonder the restaurant is always empty now.
