I had dipping noodles and my daughter had udon in bowl. They were both fantastic. I loved the dipping noodle better because of the quail egg and yuzu flavor in the dipping soup. Tempura was very crispy and I found the bacon tempura very interesting however, a bit strong for my taste. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and helpful. The wait wasn’t long and the whole experience was very nice.
Good udon, exactly what you expect especially with all the hype it’s been getting!! Cute little store on the east side with limited seating and fills up fast so going during less rush hours is key! Came here with a friend and we both got the himokawa udon in broth set with tempura. The noodles were perfectly chewy and had soaked up the perfect amount of flavor from the broth. The tempura was amazing, super crispy but light and not too oily. I personally found the bacon a bit too heavy/oily so I’d sub that out the next time I come, but the rest were amazing!! Don’t forget to eat the tempura while it’s hot. The pickled radish was a great touch and the dipping sauce/salt for the tempura was also nice. Love and would highly recommend.
It's a hole in the wall - only 17 seats total! But food is awesome! I love the signature flat noodle udon set with yuzu dipping sauce. It's warm, not cold. Everyone in our party had different preferences - some preferred the hot soup version, others preferred the dipping version. But what's in common is that everyone was satisfied. About the tempura, mine was perfect, but some people's tempura was a little overcooked. The host was super friendly and accommodating. Service was quick. The line is CRAZY. Expect to wait an hour.
This place is a phenomenal Udon noodle restaurant! 🍜 Okiboru House of Udon in the East Village 🗽 offers a simple selection of delicious 🤤 noodles! Definitely get the Himokawa Dipping 🍶 Udon with Tempura Set 🍱, you can swap the Shrimp 🍤 and Bacon 🥓 for other Tempura items like Fried Chicken 🍗, Purple 🟣 Sweet Potato 🍠 Tempura, Asparagus,.and more. You can also swap the meat 🍖 and fish 🐟 based dipping sauce with the potato 🥔 and mushroom 🍄 based vegetable dipping sauce. The place is nicely decorated 🛋️, staff 👨🍳 is super friendly and welcoming, service is quick ⏲️, and the music 🎵 is wonderful! They have limited seating 🪑 so arrive early to avoid waiting line 👥 for a long time. ⏳ It super easy to order through your phone 📱 as their menu is accessible through a QR code 🤳 with directs you to a website which accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, and credit cards. 💳 I wish I came here more often!
The Michelin-starred Okiboru tsukemen is opening up a new udon spot in St Mark’s Place, which is the first in New York (and probably all of North America) to serve Himokawa udon noodles. This is the best Japanese meal I’ve had lately. Their housemade udon is unquestionably phenomenal, but their tempura is even more outstanding imo. The complexity of their dipping sauce has largely improved compared to the last time I visited when they just opened. Each udon set comes with assorted tempura, including shrimp, applewood bacon, sweet potato, asparagus and onion. The tempura is perfectly fried without excessive oil. The batter is thin enough to wrap the meat or veggie while remaining crispy. My favorite tempura piece is the sweet potato and the wild caught jumbo shrimp. P.S. We arrived at 5pm when they opened on a Friday, and the restaurant was full within 30 min!!! *Matcha Zaru Dipping Udon w. Tempura The udon is infused with matcha powder, yet the matcha taste isn’t too strong. It tastes like plain udon with a slight hint of bitterness from the matcha. It doesn’t over power the sweet tanginess of the dipping broth. It has a richer flavor note after adding quail egg, scallion and mashed radish. I can even find yuzu skin in the sauce. *Himokawa Dipping Udon w. Tempura The udon is large and flat, so that the sauce will easily cling onto it. They are so slippery smooth that it was a mini finger workout to hold the udon with chopsticks. The chicken dipping broth reminds me of Okiboru tsukemen broth, but thinner and cleaner. The dipping sauce is the same as the one served with matcha udon. The portion is just right for me, but my bf did find it a little too small for his appetite. It is fun to try the himokawa style, but I personally still like the texture of the matcha udon more. Warm reminder: enjoy your dipping udon quick because it will clump tgt if it sits too long! *Himokawa Udon in Broth w. Tempura The udon served in hot broth is even smoother, literally swimming in my mouth. And guys, the assorted tempura is SUPERB. My fav tempura proteins: (1) Chicken (2) Jumbo Shrimp (3) Applewood Smoked Bacon The applewood smoked bacon was incredibly crispy. The jumbo shrimp was well seasoned and bouncy. I am impressed by the chicken tempura — the breaded layer is thin and the meat is still tender, perfect to dip it with pink sea salt. My fav veggie tempura: Sweet Purple Potato and Brussel Sprout. My absolute fav is def the sweet potato. Perfectly crisped to a golden hue.
Okiboru enjoys a prime location in the bustling East Village, drawing consistent crowds. To avoid long waits, I recommend arriving a few minutes before opening. Although I've waited up to an hour with 16 people ahead, the simple yet delicious fare, including the yuzu dip sauce and chewy wide noodles, was worth it. The tempura's high quality stood out, with a light and barely oily texture. *caution: not sure why but there’s no toilets for this restaurant
Great udon spot! Atmosphere is super nice, lovely place for a date - however, the restaurant is small so don’t expect to easily bring a whole party here. Food was good, very interesting way of serving udon - wide and relatively thin sheets. Definitely get one of the sets, the accompanying Tempura was fantastic. Our wait in queue wasn’t too bad, but I could expect it to be pretty long during peak times. Great place to visit if the queue isn’t too bad!
Okiboru is a hidden gem that serves up some of the most unique and delicious udon dishes I've ever tasted. The star of the show is their himokawa udon - a flat, wide noodle that has an incredible chewiness and density you won't find anywhere else. Whether you opt for the dipping style or the broth version, you're in for a treat. The tempura here is also exceptional. Light, crispy, and not at all greasy (except for the bacon, which is an interesting but perhaps unnecessary addition). The sweet potato and onion tempura were standouts, and the giant shrimp tempura was impressively bouncy and flavorful. While the space is small and lacks a customer bathroom, the quality of the food more than makes up for it. The presentation is beautiful, and you can tell a lot of care goes into each dish. The dipping sauces, particularly the citrusy yuzu one, complement the noodles perfectly. Be prepared to wait in line, but don't worry - it moves quickly. And a word of advice: eat your udon at a steady pace to fully enjoy its texture before it dries out. Overall, Okiboru offers a unique and delightful udon experience that's well worth seeking out. Just don't expect to linger too long in the small space, and maybe plan for a bathroom break before or after your meal!
First time trying here, have been looking for wide udon. And it didn't disappoint. The place is small, went there at the right time and got seated right away with two more seats available after us. Ordering through the QR code and paying online right away. Food came out fast. Forgot to take a picture of my udon in broth coz I ate right away as soon as it came. Not a place to hangout or chat around due to limited seats. Must try the food if you haven't tried one. Will def go back.
Came here at 11:30am on a Saturday (they open at 12) and we were able to make it in in the first batch. Food was fantastic, IMO the dipping udon was better than the udon with broth, they added a bit of yuzu to the dipping sauce which made it unique and refreshing. The tempura was also very done - light batter, super crispy and fresh. Bacon tempera was absolutely a highlight 👍. I definitely want to come back again to try the matcha noodles. My only complaint was, I think for the price they could have given us a bit more noodles 😅
By fate we were blessed by the Gods when we got here at 4:30 on a Sunday. We only waited 15 mins to be seated in this tiny shop that Naruto and any ramen lover would appreciate. We placed our order online and the food came out a few minutes later. No fussing with the bill. We got the wide dipping noodles (Tsukemen) with the full tempura set and the bacon set. 6 Strips of perfectly cooked silky and bouncy sheets. The dipping sauce is just perfect and not at all salty. The bacon and shrimp tempura was my favorite pieces. Left empty plates and a full belly. Sorry no take outs.
I’ve been here twice now because it was so good. First time I got the regular set and second time the dipping one. The udon is flat and wide not round if that is what someone is expecting. The tempura is very good too, the shrimp is probably the best tempura shrimp I have ever had. It is definitely easier to solo dine as it is a tight space, but go regardless if solo or small group (wouldn’t recommend more than 3 people). You order and pay first so once you’re done eating you can just leave.
It was soooo good! The tempura was so crispy on the outside, the batter was just right, and the ingredients were really fresh. The noodles set, both the signature and the soup versions were good. I enjoyed the broth, and the dipping sauce. The noodles were so thin and it went well with both styles. Would highly recommend if you like Japanese food. There was a small wait when we arrived on a Saturday afternoon around 2.30pm but it was all good.
This place has delicious food. There are about 20 seats in this small restaurant (you will definitely be sitting next to a stranger) there is also a line to enter. When it started raining while I was in line, one of the waiters handed out umbrellas! The bigger party you are eating with, the longer it’ll take to get seated. The noodles are very slippery so it might take a little bit of practice to eat the noodles, there are chopsticks and they also give tongs for people who are bad with chopsticks/don’t know how to use them. I definitely would recommend the noodles (I liked the dipping one more, but it’s just a matter of opinion), and I liked the bacon tempura the most (but some might not like it)
Classic East Village vibes—tiny spot, decent service, and pricey. That said, the food here is definitely a notch above others. The shrimp tempura was amazing—super fresh and totally worth it. The udon noodles were unique, but personally, a bit too chewy for my taste. The place is clean and cozy, but honestly, it’s way too cramped. NYC doesn’t need to be this tight—elbow to elbow with strangers, and the table barely fits anything beyond your own udon set.
Ugh it is perfect! They awlays go above and beyond for their customers! The waiters were very helpful and so nice to every customer that came in. The food is on point. The yuzu flavors of the broth, the crispy tempura, the noodle - perfection. I loved their selection for tempura and the bacon was a surprising thing but very good (and that comes from someone who doesn't like bacon so much) 100% come here!!! Need to try the hot udon during winter.
Great spot! $30 for their signature set is pretty steep, but I don’t think I’ll be able to find a place that sells himokawa tsukemen like this in NY at any other price. The tempura is light and doesn’t have the characteristic oily taste of most deep fried food, which is hard to come by and really appreciated. Even the bacon wasn’t too heavy, and was actually one of my favorite pieces of the set. The tsukemen dipping sauce had a light, refreshing, yuzu flavor that still satisfied my umami cravings. The flat noodles were the perfect consistency, although they started to stick together as time went on. Not too much of a problem, since the noodles were soft, bouncy, and easy to eat. Portion-wise, this was not enough food to make me feel full, but I was satisfied with the different flavors I was able to experience in this one set. For this price, I would have expected more food but also acknowledge that this dish is probably hard to make at this quality. Every plate I saw around me in the restaurant was empty, likely because the food is good but also because it is not a lot of food. Atmosphere is nice and quiet with limited seating, but is well-spaced for a small restaurant. It felt very reminiscent of a restaurant in Japan.
If you haven't tried Japanese wide flat udon, this is the place for you. The sets are of high value including the udon and assortment of tempuras. I highly recommend the cold dipping udon because you can taste the original flavor/texture of the udon and the complexity of the dipping sauce (even the yuzu fragrance). The hot soup udon doesn't do that as much. But mind you: dishes here center around carbs so if you are looking for more meat/protein heavy for, this place might not be for you.
This was so yummy! And value for money! I liked the cold udon yuzu noodle situation a lot. The chicken soup was also good. Very fast service! They only seat full parties. At 7:15 on a Sunday, we (2 ppl) waited for like 10 mins. But by 8pm, there was a massive line
Probably some of the best udon in NYC I’ve ever had. Very simple menu, but in this case less is more because anything you order will be done so well. I ordered the hot chicken udon which came with the most delicious piece of tempura bacon. Service is incredible and extremely fast. Not many seats so either get there early or be prepared for a short wait. Would suggest going alone or just in a group of 2.
A bit pricey imo for the signature set, but was overall delicious and surprisingly filling. I’ve never had this style of udon, so I can’t attest to the authenticity (even though there’s bacon tempura lol) The workers there were very sweet and helpful. Went for lunch on a weekday and it was pretty much empty.
The vegan dipping udon is SO GOOD! The flavor is incredible. So nice to have a vegan option and it is also amazing. Second time here and will be coming back again.
I got the signature set and it was delicious!! Recommend to eat it quickly or the udon will stick. Shrimp and Japanese potato tempura was my favorite. I thought the bacon was a bit too salty. You order through the QR code by seat (and tip) so it’s super seamless and quick! Warning: there is no restroom here!!
Efficient spot for very good udon. Love the tempura prawn and bacon, as well as the other accompaniments. It’s a unique experience and you can order on your phone while you’re in there. Worth a visit
This udon spot specializes in udon dipping, and even if you’re not familiar with the style, there’s no need to feel intimidated—they explain everything clearly and walk you through the dish. I had their signature set. The udon was chewy and bouncy, just the right texture. The tempura was fresh and crisp, a solid contrast to the noodles. Next time, I’ll probably swap out the tempura bacon, as it was a bit salty for my taste. It’s also a perfect place for solo diners. Even though ordering and paying is done online, the staff were attentive and helpful throughout the meal.
I really enjoyed this style of udon as I've never tried it before. The noodles have a wonderful chew to them, and the dipping sauce in the signature set is delightfully fragrant. I was pleasantly surprised by the bacon tempura, which wasn't too greasy. The other tempura were very good as well. The service was friendly and quick once we were seated, but we did have to wait a little over 45 min on line. It was a nice night to chat on line though!
They do udon or soba in soup or tsukemen style served with tempura and that's it...and they do it REALLY WELL. Delicious. The tempura is light and delicate..a riff is tempura bacon, which was good but the veggie tempura pieces were even better. I got the tsukemen style with very wide (around 1.5") flat noodles, great chew and bounce, a little tough to pick up, lol. The dipping broth is well balanced and flavorful. This is a tiny place, counter seating only. Great for solo dining or with 1 other person.
I got the Himokawa dipping udon set with tempura and it was so good! The noodles were perfectly cooked and chewy and the tempura were not greasy with a thin coating. The sauce that they gave to dip the udon was my favourite part. Loved the slight hint of yuzu! Near the end, the udon at the bottom were really difficult to separate so that’s the only thing that bothered me. We came at around 7:00pm on a Sunday and were lucky enough to get seated almost right away with around a 5 minute wait. They close a little early on Sunday at 8pm, so keep that in mind when visiting.
This place is very popular, and on weekends at lunchtime you’ll likely need to wait for a table unless you arrive right when it opens. That said, the wait usually isn’t too long. Their specialty is a variety of udon and cold noodle dishes—the noodles are springy and unique, and the toppings are well-seasoned without overwhelming the natural flavor of the noodles. The way the dishes are enjoyed also feels distinctive, making it a spot well worth visiting.

Super attentive staff and they made sure we had everything we needed! Food was great and presentation was even better. Will be trying the other Okiborus when I get a chance!

Lined up for 40 mins after arriving at 3:50 on a Saturday. Seems like they opened before 4pm. Liked the dipping wide udon better than the soupy one. Noodles had great chewy texture. Had tempura bacon for the first time! Everything is fantastic about tempura bacon. Matcha udon was almost too chewy.
Great presentation of the udon and tempura, but for the hype around Himokawa udon I was definitely expecting more. The udon wasn't particularly chewy and flavor of the broth and dipping broth were quite standard. Tempura was amazing! The shrimp and potato were fried very well and crisp! We came around 6pm on a weeknight with no wait, but there was a line of ~15 forming outside as we were seated. Would recommend coming earlier to avoid the line. I think its worth trying once, but there are other udon spots in the city that do udon better.
There’s always a long line that moves slowly for this unique udon 🍜 shop. Clean facilities. Ordering is done from the QR Code at your seat and you pay your check that way too. Small menu. Not your prototypical udon . Flavors are great. Tempura Bacon 🥓 is the Star ⭐️. High Priced so bring your credit cards 💳. If you’re lucky to get a seat here, give it a try. We will definitely be going back.
Super yummy!! I got the Himokawa Dipping Udon with Tempura Set, the flat udon noodles with cold yuzu broth was super good. The tempura was fried to perfection and stayed crispy the whole meal! Definitely worth trying, everything came out super fast, just note that there’s limited seating.
Ordered the Signature udon which is what they recommend. Noodle texture isn't as chewy as I expected but tasted fresh. Came with shrimp and bacon tempura and assorted tempura vegetables. The noodle dipping sauce is one of the best I've had. Only dislike noodle portion is small. They need to double that amount because I was still hungry.
the food is tasty and noodles are delishious. i wish the fish dipping sauce (i am pescetarian) was hot not cold. the place is tiny though and you will sit facing the wall which i didn’t enjoy. i understand this is a place to get in, eat quickly and leave but still the interior felt kind of off. not sure i will be back.
Good place to grab a quick meal, either by yourself or with one other friend (bar-style seating). The udon portion doesn’t look like much, but was surprisingly filling with the tempura. Delicious, though not at Raku quality.
Came here at 5pm on a Friday alone and no wait at all. The menu is simple, focusing on Himokawa udon sets. The tempura here is well made and not overly greasy, pairing well with the dipping sauce. The only drawback was the saltiness of the hot broth - I tried drinking it alone and it was unbearable. Considering this wasn’t the cold dipping noodles, I assumed that this broth would be less concentrated and more clear. Service was great and as a solo diner, I didn’t feel rushed at all. Overall, I would recommend people to visit at least once, but would personally not rush back.
the tempura has a light, thin batter that pairs nicely with the dipping sauce, making it very refreshing. The wide udon noodles have an interesting texture, but the soup base itself is a bit underwhelming.
Overall a decent meal. The cold noodle set with the katsu is a must get. The soup noodle is very salty and mid but that comes with Japanese soup I guess. It’s a bit pricey but decent experience
Visited on a weekend afternoon after hearing about their flat udon noodles served tsukemen-style. The place has a Japanese bar vibe with only counter seating—no tables. Ordering is done by scanning a QR code at your seat, but I found it uncomfortable that you’re asked to tip before your food even arrives. My friend got the hot udon and I had the tsuke cold udon. Both came with six flat noodles and tempura. The food tasted good, but the portion felt small for the price, which was disappointing. The biggest letdown was that there’s no restroom available. It’s worth trying once for the unique noodles, but I probably won’t be back.

Udon noodle was great. But the chicken broth was salty in my taste. I liked the cold fish broth udon better. Their shrimp tempura was salty as well. It was a good shrimp tho. I would've ordered 5 myself if it wasnt salty. There can be a wait so I recommend going in a bit earlier than usual dinner time if going for dinner.
I think the food here is not as flavorful as the one in Okiboru Tsukemen. Maybe because it is udon?! The noodles is chewy. For the matcha one, I didn't taste any matcha flavor. Tempura is pretty good, especially the bacon one, tho I usually don't like bacon. Shrimp one is mediocre. Both are cold noodles, and I'm never really a big fan of cold noodles. I probably would not come back.
the noodles were unique - we tried the signature dipping set and broth set. my favorite was the sweet potato tempura. we waited almost an hour on saturday evening.
The udon texture is great—nice and chewy but not overly so. Tempura is also solid, especially the bacon one. It’s my first time trying bacon tempura and it was surprisingly good. The dipping udon broth is flavorful, and with all the extra seasonings, you can switch up the taste, which is fun. But the hot soup version was way too salty for me. That said, the set costs around $22–23 and only comes with six noodles… I mean, seriously? I’m not even exaggerating—it was literally six noodles.
