I had been wanting to try a Michelin starred restaurant for a while and had heard all about Tim Ho Wan's legendary status in Hong Kong. I will admit I was skeptical. With their expansion, I wasn't sure if the New York location could live up to the original hype. But it is conveniently located in the East Village, so I finally decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. This place is dim sum only and it is truly excellent. Our server, Leo, was wonderful and incredibly gracious. He helped us navigate the menu and made fantastic recommendations. The quality of the dim sum genuinely impressed me. The chicken feet were different from the usual, braised and not fried, and I really appreciated the tender, flavorful preparation. The steamed meatballs had a distinct, authentic taste of tangerine peel. The shrimp dumplings, or har gow, were perfect with large pieces of shrimp wrapped in a thin, delicate skin that held together perfectly. That is a true sign of a skilled dim sum chef. The sticky rice was packed with generous filling, and the steamed rice rolls had that thin, silky skin that is another mark of mastery. Of course, we had to try their famous baked BBQ pork buns. Leo was kind enough to bring them to us piping hot so we could enjoy them at their deliciously best and I now understand why they are the bestseller. The fluffy, sweet on outside with savory bbq pork filling is truly amazing! Even the desserts stood out. My dad loved the osmanthus jelly with goji berries. He said it was not too sweet and was a perfect palate cleanser. My mom liked the coconut sago and my personal favorite was the green tea sesame balls. My daughter could not get enough of the fried turnip cake, which had a great crispy texture. And the whole table agreed the deep fried glutinous rice croquette was a standout. It was crispy, not soggy, with a perfect balance of sweet and salty. I did not expect to be wowed, but I truly was. The food is authentic, carefully made and served with genuine care. We will definitely be back for more.

Tim Ho Wan is my all-time favorite dim sum spot! Whenever I crave dim sum, this is always my first choice. The prices are super affordable, and the variety lets you try a little bit of everything. Portions are just right for sharing or sampling multiple dishes, and everything comes out fresh and flavorful. It’s casual, quick, and consistently satisfying — perfect for a dim sum fix without breaking the bank.

Tim Ho Wan – Pure Deliciousness in NYC Tim Ho Wan was absolutely fantastic and a highlight of our trip to New York City. It was conveniently located right around the corner from where we were staying, which made it an easy and perfect dining choice. While we didn’t get to try food in Chinatown for comparison, this experience alone was simply pure deliciousness. Every dish we tried was exceptional—from the flavorful rice rolls and the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves to the rich, comforting pork soup. The dumplings, in particular, were outstanding: perfectly made, full of flavor, and incredibly satisfying. Overall, Tim Ho Wan delivered an amazing meal with authentic flavors and beautifully prepared dishes. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone visiting NYC who wants to enjoy truly exceptional dim sum.

Why is this place so underrated? Situated in Manhattan, East Village, this place is a must go when you’re in the neighborhood. It’s probably my third visit in the last five years and everytime I come back I leave happy after having the meal there. The food is really good and don’t get me wrong - it’s not just me but also my Chinese friend who knows her cuisine. Try it for yourself. What I love the most is Baked BBQ Pork Buns, they are to die for. The service was very professional.

Not to be dramatic, but these were the best dumplings I have ever eaten. The pan-fried noodles were also delicious. Service was good and friendly. Food came out quick.

Food was amazing. It is the cheapest Michelin star rated restaurant out of all of their chains. Highly recommend the pork buns, and steamed pork rib with black bean sauce. The server was helpful and service was quick.

Tim Ho Wan consistently delivers quality service and occasionally surprises with their dishes. I’ve visited many times, but on this occasion, we explored their gluten-free options for a friend. All their shrimp dishes are excellent, particularly the fried bean curd, steamed rice roll with shrimp and Chinese chives, and steamed shrimp dumplings. For the adventurous, the braised chicken feet with abalone sauce and peanuts are nicely balanced in flavor. However, the congee with pork and preserved egg portions have shrunk and are less satisfying. The service is systematic and quick, making it a reliable spot for a dim sum craving in the neighborhood.

Hands down one of the better dim sum place in NY. Highly recommend stopping by Tim Ho Wan if you’re in the area. It’s a one star Michelin rated restaurant! A very affordable Michelin restaurant for sure. We waited about 20 minutes for a table after putting our name down. Their baked BBQ pork buns, sticky rice and braised chicken feet were the highlight. I can’t wait to come back to NY to visit Tim Ho Wan again!

Midday on a weekend, I was able to get in. No line or wait. It was an impulse. The service was quick, friendly and when you asked the staff what item you were receiving, they kindly explained the dish. Certain dishes were exceptional. Bao buns wow. There were items I did not enjoy but I cannot rate low due to a limited dataset associated with similar items. Recommend for sure. Try as many things as you can.

Solid dim sum place if you cannot make it to Chinatown. Some of their bites needed a little bit of seasoning but nothing that their chili oil and sauces couldn’t fix. I generally liked it and I’d go back. Their lychee hot tea was awesome. They were also pretty quick to serve up the dim sum.

I can see why this dim sum spot is so popular. The food is incredibly flavorful, with a great variety of dishes that truly stand out. The quality is definitely noticeable, and you can taste the care and attention to detail in every bite. That said, the price is definitely on the higher side compared to other dim sum places in the city. But, given that it has a Michelin star, I guess you’re paying for that elevated experience. Still, it’s worth trying if you’re in the mood for something special! Just be prepared to pay a bit more.

We got har gow, 2 siu mai, pan fried noodles, steamed rolls, and the spicy dumplings I like the siu mai and har gow! Not a huge fan of the steamed rolls, they tasted a bit refrigerated. A good dim sum place for a quick and affordable lunch. The place is not big, and the service is quick. They have a small menu to choose your dim sum from. They are known for their roast pork buns, but keep in mind, this is not exactly the same as the ones you found in Chinatown. The food is clean and decent, and I came a few times. The quality is consistent as well!

Overall: A huge disappointment Ambience: outdated decor, but very good for solo lunch, quite a few tables are solo diners Service: not the waiter’s fault but the cheap plastic green chopsticks are a mode killer… Food: Huge disappointment: everything screamed previously frozen. The classic chicken feet is barely cooked (the traditional dim sum chicken feet should be so soft they melts in your mouth). The coffee and milk tea is very mediocre as well. The only redeeming dish is BBQ pork bun. Honestly don’t know how this shop can make it so far in the competitive food scene of New York City. Will never come back for sure.

Hidden Manhattan Eats: Tim Ho Wan 📍85 4th Ave NY Tried out Tim Ho Wan 🥟✨the famous dim sum spot known as one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. I went in ready for a dim sum feast and ordered their signature baked BBQ pork buns and some deep fried dumplings. The pork buns? Soft, pillowy, with this sweet crackly crust on top that threw me off at first… but the savory caramelized pork filling balanced it out. Not bad, kinda grew on me. 👌🏽 But the fried dumplings… y’all. They were sweet inside. I wasn’t ready for that at all, and honestly it ruined the vibe for me 😩. Like, are sweet dumplings a traditional thing? Or did I just order wrong? If you’ve been to Tim Ho Wan, drop your recs — what’s good here, what should I try next time? Because I’m still curious, but that dumpling situation… nah.

As a dim sum lover, I had high hopes, but unfortunately, the food was just average. Some of the dumplings lacked freshness, and the flavors didn’t stand out. The service was attentive, which I appreciated, and the atmosphere had more of a Hong Kong-style café (cha chaan teng) feel—simple but clean. Overall, it was an okay experience, but not a place I’d go out of my way to revisit.

This is from a dinning experience years ago, so everything could already have been changed. Take this review as a reference, but please don't rely on it. 1) I've received a bun with an insect on it. I reported, and the server took the dish back to kitchen. Later the server came back and said "it was just black stuff from the flour". Luckily, I have taken this photo, which shows the details of legs and tentacles before the server took away the dish. An occasionally found insect was not a big deal to me. I feel unsatisfied because they tried to deny. 2) I have received undercooked (partially raw) steamed pork ribs. I did not bother to report, as I was tired of restaurant's attitude.

I haven't gotten all my dish as I'm writing this, but the rice rolls and radish cakes were super soft. I'm used to a little chew so having them melt is more overcooked than a nice melt. I can barely pick up the radish cakes without them crumbling. The deep fried pork dumplings were strangely extra sticky to my teeth. Again, I've had them more chewy. Presentation of the food isn't giving the "Michelin" that I read online, maybe that was changed and I didn't know. Except the spicy wonton, they did look good. They tasted ok. I think I'm not a spicy wonton person because I'm not a big fan of chili oil so I can't blame that. Warning: they're super slippery cause of the chili oil and kept slipping off my chopsticks. Final statement, I've had dim sum I like better elsewhere. It's funny because I got disappointed both ways: 1) reading the 5* comments then eating it was disappointing; 2) there were comments disliking it and I wanted to give the place hope. It's not bad! It's just not worth it the price to me. My last dish though, the taro sago coconut milk dessert, it's too simple to go wrong so 5/5* for that to average 3/5*. Oh apparently, the most recommended dish is the BBQ pork buns which I didn't eat, so maybe everything else is meant to be meh so that shines.

Eating dim sum for dinner was a novel ide since I usually associate dim sum with the late morning/early afternoon hours. Thankfully places like Tim ho wan allows for satisfying dim sum cravings when they hit at a random hour. I came with a group of two other people and got a total of five dishes. This was a different experience than having Chinatown dim sum since you order off a menu and the dishes are brought out, rather than having staff push around carts of steamed goodies and serving tea with the food. The menu had lots of pictures, which made choosing easy. I do have to say that I was taken aback by the limited selection of food. For example, there wasn't as many types of dumplings that you would generally find. In any case, the menu does hit on the key staples of dim sum in my opinion. All the dishes served were piping hot, which totally hit the spot when it's cold outside. My favorite was probably the fried eggplant with shrimp. The pan fried noodles were a bit bland but I guess a good balance to everything else that was a little more salty. Overall, this was good for eating dim sum if you want it at an unconventional hour.

Weekday evening walked in no wait time. With the expectation of Hong Kong’s popular dim sum restaurant which I have been eating many times in Hong Kong, this first time visit of dishes is quite disappointed. Only the Steamed rice with Minced Beef is just ok, taste of Pork wonton in spicy sauce and Pan fried noodles are way below regular Chinese restaurants you can get in Chinatown. Price seems not justified with the taste and quality of food, may not visit again.
