I’ve been frequenting The Crab Cooker since the 70’s and it’s been the same since I can remember. Granted, they have just rebuilt the entire place recently. It looks and feels the same with the only difference being it’s larger now. In the summer be prepared to wait for a table, it’s well worth the wait. The food is excellent and cooked to perfection. Don’t miss out on the smoked albacore appetizer it’s a go to for a delicious starter.

I've been coming to this place since the nixon years... The absolutely best king crab claws on the planet...

The Crab Cooker reopened 3 weeks ago. They were forced to rebuild from the ground up when the developments nearby caused structural damage. I've been coming to this restaurant since I was 9 years old, in 1975. I was so glad to see that the new structure incorporated the original, architectural feel of the previous building. The food has not changed a bit, except the prices on the menu we're slightly higher. My go-to is the clam chowder. My dinner salmon was phenomenal. I forgot to take pictures of my dinner plate since I was so focused on it (Ha, Ha). Our ritual is to purchase a full court size container of clam chowder afterwards to take home, just ask them to pack it on ice.

This was a recommendation and the visit was well received we had the chowder, scallops, halibut, crab cakes and soft shell crab plus all the sides. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The service was good too. I recommend

Excellent food and very nice, polite and professional staff. I have been going to the Crab Cooker for the past 28 years and have always had great seafood and an excellent experience. Great restaurant for families and adults for a very nice meal and experience in California.

This place is a great seafood dinner option. There is no dedicated parking, so plan for that if you choose to eat here. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is relaxed. Food is served on and in paper products and the cutlery is plastic. The clam chowder is Manhattan style, or not the cream kind as seen in the photo. The Crab cakes are crispy and served with the best tartar sauce. We split 1lb of the king crab and it comes with a choice of 2 sides. They cut the shell for you and it made it so much easier to get out every last bit of meat! The flavors are on point and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious seafood next to the beach!

Calling all seafood lovers! If you're in Newport Beach and craving a taste of the Pacific, look no further than The Crab Cooker . This iconic institution has been serving up fresh, mesquite-broiled seafood since 1951, and let me tell you, they haven't missed a beat! In 1969, Venture Magazine rated it as one of the top two restaurants in the world. As for me it’s ranked #1 in book. Follow me on IG @hungry_dude_usa

Excellent place and very friendly servers; Hilda was a total delight and gave great food recommendations and everything was delicious! The cheddar potatoes, cracked crab 🦀 and Halibut were a 10/10!!

We were greeted by very friendly host and , seated quickly. The food was amazing. I really love their mash 😍. Skewers are very meaty, slaw is made different (I don’t eat everyone’s) but I loved it.

After all these years, it's nice to know some things don't change. The Crab Cooker has been an institution in Newport Beach for decades and is a "must visit" for first timers and veteran visitors alike. First time here in over two years and did not disappoint. Yummy food and friendly service. Cost about $60 per person, with appetiser and beer/wine plus entree. Funky harbor and nautical decor on the inside with fresh fish cooked over an open fire. Yes, still served on paper plates and plastic utensils, just part of the charm. Worth the visit. Make sure to look up when inside to see all the stuff, including the big great white shark hanging from the ceiling.

I absolutely adored this place. I had a nice cup of gorgeous clam chowder, then the famous soft shell crabs, perfectly cooked and delicious, and a wonderful lunch plate of Halibut fish with cheese potatoes and cole slaw. Excellent quality, the fish was really flavourful. One negative note, mostly about American restaurants nowadays and not just about this place: why so much care in the decoration and the food, and then serve it on paper plate with plastic cutlery? Does waste get recycled properly at least?

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, for 40+ years. Freshest fish dishes and the wife loves the Alaskan King Crab legs. All served on paper plates; no frills, just great seafood. Their clam chowder is Boston style and there will be a line of people ordering it just to sit on the bench outside to consume it at all hours, so plan accordingly. A local jewel.

This is just about as classic Pacific coast Americana as you can get. All the colours around you pop out of the ornaments, tables, decorations. It even starts right as you enter the gorgeous carved wood door. The excitement in the kitchen is in full view in the front dining area. The back is a bit quieter but just as in character. Service was prompt and polite. Food came out weirdly fast and it was great. The food is perfectly refined to simple and delicious. Fresh baked bread tastes genuine and homemade; having baked a lot of bread as a child for family meals I can personally say it hits that mark perfectly. The crab cakes were possible the only nitpick in that they were a little too basic, but I really did order a lot of great food. The manhattan clam chowder was great. I usually prefer a cream-based chowder but I decided to give this a go. It won me over with a sweet citrus kick on the way down and had nifty little baked bread minis that added a nice crunch. The main meal, King Crab legs, was fresh, cooked perfectly, and had plenty of meat. I prefer to scrape all my meat out and drizzle butter over. It was very very good. The cheesy mashed potatoes were a surprising supporting side-dish. They leave them warming near the front of the glass separating you from the cooking area. This was an expensive meal but I was only here for a night and decided to splurge a bit. I didn't eat everything, but very much enjoyed every bite.

One of the best places to get seafood in the Newport Beach area. This place has history, charm and great food! The only disappointment is that the clam chowder is a Manhattan style with a tomato base…which was delicious, but not the New England Style I prefer. We tried cocktail crab and shrimp, oysters and fried soft shell crabs…everything was amazing!

Went on a night bike ride starting at Sunset Beach. Clam chowder sounded good so I headed south to The Crab Cooker in Newport Beach. I bought a bowl of chowder to go. I ate it in a nearby courtyard. Their chowder is red, and while I prefer white, it still hit the spot and it warmed me up for the bike ride back!

I love this place. My band teacher brought a group of us here from our junior high school in Watts. We were treated great and the Manhattan clam chowder was the best. I come often now that I live nearby and it just gets better and better.

What's not to like? Our family has gone here for over 50 years. While the portions have gotten smaller since the rebuild, the quality of the fish is still tops and pricing is reasonable. We love to take home a quart of their clam chowder and breadsticks! Yum!

Faith was our server and she was pretty polite and professional. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and the service earned a five Star review. Now on the the food which also earned another 5 star. We had a wonderful dinning experience and we will be back soon hopefully. The atmosphere here is small town big easy with a hint of uptown living. It's located on the coast and if that wasn't beautiful enough..... Well I'll let you be the judge. Stop at the Crab Cooker and find out for yourself. Bye for now we are on to the next place..

Yum! Had the Halibut plate, soft shell crab and crab cakes and they hit the spot! $13 for the kids grilled cheese was definitely overpriced but the kids shrimp was worth the price with a good quantity! Def worth hitting up this classic spot when in town.

Been coming to this place since I was a little girl. Worth my 1hr drive. Best red Chowder, super flavorful. Their selection if fish is always fresh and immaculately cooked. I got the blue plate special last time I was there, great combo of soup and fresh fish salad [think tuna salad]. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere with open kitchen and antique fishing memorabilia.

The Crab Cooker is my new favorite seafood place. It’s been around for 70 years. I don’t think they’ve ever redecorated so it’s pure authentic vintage. This place has a lot of authentic charm and character. The staff, especially the waitress was particularly attentive and knowledgeable. The shrimp and scallop skewer was cooked perfectly and very tasty. They somehow imagine fuse bacon into it, not wrapped it, but somehow infuse because it was not overwhelming. Coleslaw is finally very finally diced and shredded, but not too sweet not too sour is very good. The mashed potatoes is like none other. I’ve had slightly coated in cheese and then grilled so there’s a little crust on it. The south shell crab was OK not crispy enough so you had to bite down and chew a little bit which well no one really wants to do with a crab. The clam chowder was OK definitely not the best. It did not have much clam in it. They do bake their own sourdough bread, which is very chewy crusty and tasty. Definitely stop in if you’re in the area parking can be tough, but there is a structure nearby.

If you are a seafood lover, especially crustaceans you will love this place. Came here for my husband’s birthday and Mary Jane took great care of us. They do not take reservations but when we arrived at 6pm on a Saturday they had some open tables for my party of 4. We enjoyed the fried calamari and shrimp cocktail to start. Their main dishes come with sides with choices of coleslaw, rice, tomatoes or mashed potatoes. We had the soft shell crab, lobster, scallops and shrimp skewers. Everything was delicious, well prepared and seasoned. The mashed potatoes come in a big scoop and are seared on the bottom on their griddle, really tasty! They gave a complimentary slice of cake for the birthday celebration and all sang happy birthday. The atmosphere is casual with fun decor.

Category: Fish House and Local Icon. This place is so much of a Newport Beach institution that it’s featured in a painting on the wall, the original of which hangs in the Hilbert Museum on the Chapman U campus in the City of Orange, and was even acted out in Newport’s annual Pageant of the Masters. So what’s the restaurant like? It’s sharkingly good (there was a huge taxidermied Great White shark hanging over our table). The first thing you see upon entering is the fish counter/display for purchase and home cooking. From there, proceed to the shark-dominated dining room with the aforementioned painting, the photo of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra dining there, seafood-themed stained glass above the street level windows, hardwood floors, Tiffany-ish hanging lamps, lifesized mermaid lamp, and fun, fish-related things wherever you look. There’s a similarly themed dining room perfect for private parties, and beyond that the rear dining room with raftered ceiling and fans, and a wall of nautical mementos. All of this, combined with booths and tables with banquettes throughout, make this neighborhoody seafood joint exactly like you would expect. You can even view the busy kitchen through the glass to see the giant, namesake cookers. The crabs and all of the other seafood are sharkingly fresh: crab (of course), shrimp, fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. I can vouch for the clam chowder (Manhattan), shrimp skewer, soft shell crabs, crab cocktail, and grilled halibut special. All delicious and all well prepared. Almost all wines were under $40 (our sweetspot for restaurant wines), with a couple under $30. Excellent service. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice

First time in and I loved it! I was here with a relative that had been coming here for 60 years an and it still lived up to his hype! It starts with a great atmosphere. Very clean and nice surroundings and it has every right to be pretentious, but it’s a perfect casual beach town seafood place. The staff was friendly and efficient, but the food was the star of the show! I had the scallops on a skewer with the potatoes and cole slaw, but I want to come back for half the menu. If you’re anywhere near Newport, do yourself a favor and stop in to The Crab Cooker!

Ahoy there, fellow foodies! Just a stone's throw from the bustling Newport Beach Pier, this little gem of a restaurant reels you in with its reliably delicious fare and charming maritime atmosphere. Parking was a breeze, even if I opted for the paid lot across the street ($11.25 for 3 hours) – good to know they have their own lot in the back for future voyages! My culinary journey began with a cup of their Manhattan clam chowder, and let me tell you, it was like a warm hug from the sea. Rich and intensely tomato-y, it had a satisfyingly pureed texture. The accompanying soup crackers were the perfect shipmates, ready to be dunked and soaked in that flavorful broth. For the main course, I cast my net and landed the fresh catch of the day: grilled halibut. Cooked to perfection, it was flaky and moist. The cheesy potatoes were a comforting side, and the simple tomato slices offered a refreshing counterpoint. A crisp Heineken 0.0 completed this delightful midday catch. The service was as smooth as calm waters – my waiter was attentive without being intrusive. The facilities were shipshape and spotless, and the atmosphere was a pleasant haven for adults. Everywhere you look, the nautical theme comes to life with maritime artifacts, fishing gear, and vibrant sea-inspired artwork. It's clear this restaurant consistently sails smoothly. They seem to have their sea legs firmly beneath them and are always on top of their game. If you're in the Newport Beach area, drop anchor here for a truly satisfying meal! There just isn't much for $51 + tip.

My friends surprised me with a bday celebration here, and this place did not dissapoint! We had the raw clams which were surprisingly very good! I usually do raw oysters, but I have to say, I've been converted! Ialso had the red clam chowder, because my girlfriend raved about it. It was very good, especially with tobasco. I usually prefer white chowder, so I think I'll try the New Englnd chowder next time. We had some deliciously smoked fish, which I forget what it was called, but it was very good. The tarter sauce that it came with was so good, we asked for extra. We shared a crab cake dinner with a side of verry addicting cheesy mashed potatos and delicious rice pilaf. The crab cakes did not look like traditional crab cakes, but yhey sure were full of crab and delicious! We also had swordfish with the same sides, and let me tell you, I never knew that swordfish could be so good! I've had swordfish once in the past that was dry and horrible, so I never cared to try it again. I'm so glad that my friends ordered it this time because I have a whole new outlook on swordfish and will definitely be ordering it again next time. I don't recall the name of the nice gentleman who served us, but he was very professional, patient and helpful as we struggled to decide what to order. He even brought out the beautiful cake that my friend brought for me with lit candles. I loved the casual and cozy atmosphere as well. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion without the pretentiousness of a good seafood restaurant. My friends parked down below which they had to pay for. Not sure if the restaurant validates. I got lucky and got free parking right near the restaurant. I can't wait to come back for more!

Great place for lunch! We drove from San Diego and definitely we would do it again. Every product is fresh and with excellent flavour. We tried the clam chowder, the scallops, the lobster and the crab and we all loved each plate. Each one includes 2 extras, we chose mashed potatoes and salads. For drinks we chose beer and sparkling water which was free. We waited like 15 minutes for a table for three at 2pm. There was people waiting, but there was space to wait inside. Our waiter was nice and attentive. We spent like 30 dollars each one. The place is very nice, has many details and is perfectly decorated for the kind of food.

This definitely has a lot going for it from authentic decor to great service. I enjoyed the food and would recommend coming here. I'm just not at a 5 on the food for this sort of beach/seafood fare. I only tried the clam chowder and cod skewers though, so for all I know there more expensive stuff might have impressed me more.

"Eat lots a fish." That's all you need to know about this place. It's about a short walk from the main beach area - which I like because it's less hectic. The staff is great and the food is good. I'd recommend the clam/mussels. I had their clam chowder but prefer the creamier version. I would come back here again given the opportunity.

Fun seafood spot in a prime location. We stopped in for the first time and left satisfied. Walked right in on a Friday night, no wait. We tried the crab and shrimp cocktail along with the crab cakes. The crab cakes were delicious! The shrimp cocktail was a bit disappointing as we found shrimp which were not deveined in the dish. Pretty gross. We also found the prices to be a bit high considering everything was served on paper plates and with plastic utensils. Other than those downsides, we enjoyed our meal.

I wanted to round up on this one, but couldn't bring myself to give it a 5. This is a Newport Beach classic. However, with so many more restaurant options these days, the bread is just OK and you have to pay separate for it. The salmon meal was fine, but the tartar sauce isn't my favorite. The King Crab was actually really good, but expensive (although fairly priced for the quantity). I have to agree with the overall consensus that this is a below 4.5 star experience. But, above 4 keeps you on the list in my book. Especially with all the nostalgia.

Very neat place but a cross between fancy and cafeteria. Had swordfish and it was cooked perfectly. The sides came via ice cream scoop portions. The Cole slaw was meh at best, cheese potato's same. The clam chowder was more minestrone +clams. Not my style but you might like it. This place reminds me of Harry carry in Chicago. All the wait staff dressed fancy and nothing special. Everything was served on paper/plastic which I assume is beach no glass kiz people are dumb rule. This is more of a fast seafood meal than a fancy date dining experience. Was happy overall and would return.

Very cool decorations with knick knacks from olden times and lots of stuffed sealife. Calamari was good but as an East coaster their Crab cakes were atrocious. Overpriced for average food IMHO. Maybe you’ll have better luck but stay away from the crab cakes…

Mediocre at best. Crab cakes tasted like something out a box found in the freezer section at your local grocery store. The Cole slaw was unimpressive. KFC makes better. And the skewer had rubbery, unseasoned fish. The whole meal was a disappointment. Especially at the price point. Also, I get using disposable cups, plates, and utensils are their flair but that should be your indicator that this isn't a high end place to eat in any form. Sorry guys, just not for me. Won't be a repeat customer.

We were a party of 6. First off the paper plates and plastic silverware should have been our first clue on how the meal would go. We ordered an oyster platter which came out on a bed of ice on a paper plate so the waitress couldn't pick it up when we were done because it was soaked with water. The oysters were not cleaned very well and had sandy grit in them. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and it showed up in a small plastic to go cup and small paper cup of cocktail sauce. We ordered the swordfish, cod, and salmon. The fish was cooked perfect, but not much flavor. Really everything had little flavor from the rice to the mashed potatoes. The waitress Jordan was great and was very tentative. We were not impressed with the meal.

Came here because it was nostalgic to my 86-year-old mother. She used to come as a teen, and has fond memories. I honestly was surprised at the limited menu. If you wanted your seafood it had to come on a skewer. Was craving some clam chowder but they have Manhattan clam chowder, which I have never tried. Waitress was kind enough to go as a sample. I did not care for it. I can't compare it to anything else so I have nothing else to say about that. There's an option for the crab cakes to be served as an entree with sides or ss an apetizer. Being that both the entree with the sides and the appetizer were the same price, I anticipated something more. We opted to get the scallops and order the crab cakes as an appetizer for $18.95. Our crab cakes appetizer consisted of (2) 2 and 1/2-in crab cakes and tartar sauce and a lemon wedge. There's no justification in that pricing. Cupcakes or mainly filling with some crab. I anticipated ,(6), but at the very least, (4). The scallops came and they were the smaller ones, and regretfully the chart taste took over the lovely butter taste that scallops usually carry. Cheesy potatoes were kind of tough. Then I saw that they have the cheesy potatoes pre-scooped and ready to go for each plate. So there were about 15 sitting there waiting for orders. Positives, our server was delightful. It almost felt as though she knew the food was not up to par so she had to compensate. And the tartar sauce is amazing.

Food was terrible. The clam chowder (red) tasted like beef and was very spicy. The bread wasn’t even served warm. I ordered a shrimp Louie salad and it was horrible. I ask that it be tossed, it was not. There was no eggs in the salad. The thousand island tasted like it came out of a wishbone jar. Overall terrible experience. Sorry Crab Cooker you need a complete redo of your menu.

The saw the sign “world best seafood” with good rating so I decided to give this place a try. This place unfortunately did not “wow” me or give me that “world best seafood” vibes. I would say it’s a little pricey for the quality of the food. The shrimp cocktail tasted ok. The claim chowder was tomato soup based and it definitely tastes like tomato soup with tiny pieces of clams. You have to order the sourdough separately. Soft shell crab was definitely soft and you can eat the whole thing. The potato and rice were lack of flavors. There was only one waitress and multiple cooks in the back and our order/food took forever to arrived.

Crab Cooker in Newport Beach looks charming at first, but sadly, the food tells a different story. This isn’t a proper seafood restaurant — more of a casual diner setup, but with restaurant-level prices and low quality. All plates, glasses and cutlery is single use and thrown away. We ordered 2 crab cakes $18 per plate, deep-fried in what tasted like reused oil — soggy and lacking flavor. The *clam chowder* (tomato-based, not creamy) was honestly the worst I’ve had anywhere, Wholefoods is even much better. Our server was friendly and upfront about the chowder being different (tomato base), but it still didn’t taste like clam chowder at all — just a bland tomato broth with tough pieces of clam. We also had fried calamari and 3 lemonades. Total bill $90 before tip. For that price, you’d expect fresh seafood. Sadly, this felt more like a (tourist) trap with nostalgic branding. Our waiter was kind, but it doesn’t make up for food that just doesn’t deliver. Many reviews mention the same issues — poor food quality, small portions, and high prices. Plenty of better seafood spots in Newport Beach. Skip this one.
