Very nice place, the tacos were weird and amazing. Loved the differenct flavors and mixes. Must try in Oakland.
I have to say, Tacos Oscar is a VIBE n’a HALF. Imagine being outdoors between two buildings, with storage containers as functional structures with wood and plastic overhead covering. The way they’ve structured the environment, you are partially indoor with all the perks of eating outside! I’m a nerd for strategy and I noticed that the entry is diagonal to the hallway leading to the bathroom, so no wind tunnels! That’s always tough for outdoor spots and they FIGURED IT OUT. The food is incredible, I ended up trying every taco over two separate trips. The first time, Mara Hruby was spinning vinyl records, and Oscar was serving up food! It was cool to see him in action with amazing music to set the mood for taco success. They are super family friendly so I brought my niece and nephew the following week and they loved the food too! I ended up giving my nephew my fourth taco after he finished three and he wanted more! He just turned 10 and he was about to out eat me! It says a lot because he’s a picky eater. Don’t eat meat? NO PROBLEM. The plant based mushroom taco was so savory and the mole was so good, don’t forget about the chard broccoli (yeah, I said it)! The first time, they sold out so naturally the second time I had to get at least two. All in all, if you are in Oakland and want a chill upscale, taco spot, look no further. If you live in Temescal, shame on you if you haven’t eaten here yet! Juuussstt kidding, but seriously, get up and get tacos. It’ll be worth it. Review, OUT 🚀🌮🥳
This place is great! I appreciate the vegan options (and GF)!! The quality of ingredients is fantastic. Cute outdoor-only seating. Not great for large groups.
An absolutely soothing hip taco place that I went with a friend while in Oakland. There is plenty of outdoor seating and an overall serene moody ambience to the place, sophisticated but Bohemian and stylish. The tacos are delightful and the prices are reasonable, and they come with a satisfying mix of flavors. There is a casual rustic chicness here that strikes me (native Coloradoan currently living in Seattle) as being very distinctly California. This is one of my friend's favorite places to eat in Oakland, and I can definitely see why. The strings of exposed lights add a fitting rustic-cool touch.
One of those spots that truly lives up to its reputation and star rating. Excellent brunch tacos as well (we preferred the tacos over the burrito). Definitely grab some of the habanero sauce too.
Tacos Oscar in Oakland is a delightful spot for anyone craving authentic Mexican food. The barbacoa taco was a standout, featuring tender, slow-cooked beef that was rich and flavorful, perfectly complemented by fresh cilantro and onions. The chile verde taco, with its zesty green sauce, offered a nice kick and a bright contrast to the barbacoa. Both tacos were served on warm, handmade tortillas, adding to the overall experience. The casual atmosphere and friendly service make it a great place to enjoy a quick meal. If you're in the area, Tacos Oscar is definitely worth a visit for a taste of delicious, hearty tacos.
The chile verde pork tacos were great. Decided to try the broccoli taco upon suggestion from many people in line. It was pretty good. Definitely worth a try
Such a cute spot with delicious, authentic tacos! We tried the charred broccoli, camote, and the puerco en chile verde—all incredibly flavorful. The dishes tasted like Mexico with a distinct Oakland twist. The decor gave major Mexico City vibes, even the taco plates were colorful. It’s a simple, chill place with thoughtful details throughout.
What a find! Very refreshing! Flavors are so full of life and vibrant. Will definitely come back for more!!!
What could be better than "permanent" street food! No overly fancy Father's Day brunch for us, just delicious Taco de Huevos (egg) and Tacos de Papa (potato.) The fried eggs were perfectly cooked and both kinds were seasoned just right. Our group decided we need to make time to visit during the week to try their regular menu.
Back again and still awesome. Chips and salsa are fresh. The back patio area has heaters so don't let the cold weather keep you away. Fantastic tacos, laid back vibe and friendly service. We'll definitely be back.
The tacos were amazing! I had the chicken, pork, and broccoli which were all amazing! The tortillas are home-made and phenomenal! The broccoli taco was all of our favorite and it had amazing peanut chile oil! We brought our friend’s dog Oscar and the staff brought him a cookie. 10/10 will be back!
I cannot emphasize how good the food here is enough. It’s cooked with so much love by the most talented folks using the most beautiful ingredients. Every time I come here I know I’m in for a really special meal. Thank you to the chefs!!!!!
Tacos Oscar is such a cool little spot — laid-back vibe, friendly staff, and seriously good tacos. Everything tastes super fresh, with creative toppings and bold flavors. It’s the kind of place you stop by for a quick bite and end up hanging out longer than you planned. Simple, tasty, and totally worth it.
I shared the Kogi short rib with my friend and it was really good! We will be back for that one and maybe try another one. The biscuit is also really good. Honey and jalapeno? What a good combination.
I was in on 11/11 around lunch waiting on my bf at the record store. There were 2 tables dining when I arrived. About every 10 minutes folks walked in, over the next hour - couples, besties, families, elderly, in additionto a kid running wild. The waitress was working alone. I have not seen someone HUSTLE so hard in a long time. She greeted everyone, took their orders, tidied when she could, carried meals out, unloaded the dishwasher etc. and all with a calm, collected, smooth grace. One thing after another, for example running out of register tape and she carried on without letting anyone know how overwhelmed she was. I heard her say she worked at a different location. I was BEYOND impressed. She put everyone first. This young lady deserves some praise. Will definitely be back.
So glad they had vegan options! We ordered the basic vegan mac with gluten free pasta and added fried onions! It was fantastic. Great portion size and the plate came out sizzling. The staff was so friendly! It was a bit busy but definitely worth the wait. It was our first time eating here and surely won’t be our last. Thanks so much!
Someone told us that we had to stop at Homeroom to try the best mac and cheese when visiting the Bay, and we had to! A cold monday night, and some friends, everyone had their different mac n cheese, and the overall thought it's that every single one was incredible. I can speak about how good the Elote Mac was, specifically with chicken (Thank you Sam, our waiter, for the recommendation). The food. The service. Everything was good. A good way to finish our trip in the bay! If we come back, we will be back to Homeroom for sure!
Went there on Monday night to eat with some friends, and it was incredible. The Kogi Mac was absolutely spectacular. Thanks to Sam for being our server! He was super sweet and gave us good menu recommendations. Totally recommended!!
I've been hearing about this place for 10+ years, and FINALLY got to try it! We went on a Wednesday around noon and it was empty. Sounds like on weekends it can get packed, so plan accordingly. Can't even start this review without a shoutout to our waitress Bridgette-- she was so full of joy and made us feel welcome. It was literally like getting served by family. The mac... THE MAC! So flavorful and hit the spot for cozy food on a foggy day. I tried the Jalapeno Mac, which included cream cheese. I didn't expect to love it so much, the jalapeno really packed a punch and that cream cheese addition was fantastic. I also loved that it had the breadcrumbs on top for that crunch. The interior is super cute, great for a big group too. Down the street there's also a "to-go" location if you don't have time to dine in. I didn't realize that there are also now locations in the South Bay, but this was 100000% worth the trip to Oakland.
Went to lunch here with my mom and we shared two dishes. I order one of the season specials the Macximus Mac with no breadcrumbs and our server recommended that my mom get their Kogi Short Rib Mac. For both of them we got gluten free noodles and they had a fantastic texture. The servings were generous so we had lots of leftovers. They reheated well in the toaster oven.
From what i understand this places reputation doesn’t even need a review because of how highly it was talked about but, here we are anyway. As a plant based gluten free person not often (or ever) do I get to indulge in Mac and cheese and holy macaroni this was single handily the best dish that has graced my taste buds. Is that dramatic? Yes absolutely but they earned it. The atmosphere, staff and options catered to dietary restrictions is off the charts. I also got their vegan gluten free brownie and it was divine. You have to go!
I was pretty impressed with my experience at Homeroom across the board. The staff was attentive, nice, and helpful. The food was the definition of comfort food, and there are all kinds of unique options! Really really loved the kogi beef mac and cheese. The elote one was delicious too. I’m assuming that you can’t really go wrong with anything at this place.
Homeroom was an amazing visit, and was exactly as described to me: a mac & cheese, lovers dream. You can make your own custom or you can try one of their specialties and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. We tried the truffle Mac and I made a custom tomato and hotdogs Mac. Both had incredible flavors. The truffle came through really well along with the cheese and the cheddar cheese Mac. That was the base for the custom I chose was awesome and the tomatoes added the perfect flavor and nostalgia I was looking for. Would recommend. We even finished with a brownie sundae that was pretty good, but the star of the show is the mac & cheese.
What a fun place to have a satisfying meal! If you want Mac and Cheese, come here and your needs will be fulfilled. The portions are so big that you will need to take some home with you for... Future pleasure. The rich, sticky, cheesy sauce on the pasta was everything that hopes and dreams are made of. The staff are very friendly, very accommodating, and seem to be genuinely happy to be there. From the moment we walked into the restaurant, there was always someone waiting in line to be seated... It was a Sunday afternoon, not exactly a hot hour, but this was how much people wanted to eat here. I would definitely come here again if I'm ever back in Oakland, just to experience the magic one more time.

Mac and cheese heaven! They have so many creative and delicious options. You should expect a wait, but it's completely worth it for the food

The mac and cheese is delicious. long wait but worth it. They seem to be short staff. If you can be patient and wait, it's worth it.
We loved the mac and cheese flavors. Probably the best we've had ever! It was a quiet weekday evening, so parking and seating were easily available.

Best tacos, rudest cashier (consistent with some of the other reviews). This is based on eating there 11 times in 2025. Came back in 2026 and still the same rude behavior. Shout out to the woman that hands me my take out order with a big smile every single time.
Affordable and decent. From what I remember about 6-8 years ago this place use to be really good but frankly it’s losing its touch. The atmosphere isn’t all that great either but it’s a good spot for a date night if you’re looking to take someone special out. Service is decent, beer on tap, and I would recommend coming in to try their unique Mac n cheese 🧀 . I had the chorizo mac and when I last ate it a few years ago it was memorable, today it was just so bland and over spiced. Wife was pleased with the Truffle Mac, despite my disappointment. 3.8/5 stars imo
A restaurant that specializes in mac and cheese? Say less! We ordered their crab mac and found out.. they're kinda large haha. I finished mine but we could've easily shared one! The mac was well executed - a good proportion of breadcrumbs, decent crab meat, and lovely Gouda cheese! Highly recommend sharing your mac 🤣.

The dishes were flavourful, but could be unbalanced. For example, in the Charred Broccoli Taco, the taste of the peanuts dominated all other ingredients. The Fermented Habanero Hot Sauce was disappointing. It was just raw spiciness with none of the usual smokey and fruity complexity of habanero.
Really appreciate this place for generally having a variety of tasty vegetarian tacos on the menu, a nice interior, and commitment to a "dining for justice" charge to support houseless neighbors. But my food last night was a real disappointment. Mushroom and broccoli tacos were one note and left huge puddles of oil as I ate. The pumpkin on the tostada was cooked to mush and extremely salty. I think I'll take a break for a while, and hope they can make some adjustments.
Would have given this a 5 star had our waitress not been extremely rude. Lack of attention and care with a big attitude. No hi, hello, how are you.. just silence followed by her sitting us down. Was the first table seated in the restaurant, followed by 2 more tables and was the last to be served. Didn’t get drink orders taken until she took our food order 15 mins after sitting down. There were only 3 tables and should not take 15 mins. I was ready to get up and leave, which another couple ended up doing after they came in and waited to have no service given to them. We ended up ordering everything at once, drinks, Mac n cheese and some Caesar side salads. Didn’t get the salads until after our Mac n cheese was handed to us. I asked about it and got attitude saying how she doesn’t make the salads and she has to do everything else in the place since she’s the only one.. mind you, I was a waiter at a very busy restaurant years ago.. I know how it is to serve a dozen tables at once. A nice male employee came in to help while our original waitress took her break.. thank god. He was awesome and got more from him in 5 mins than the last 30 from her. He was top notch. The food was awesome.. but service sucked (for the most part) to a point where I would never want to come back. If anything, I’ll order take out from down the street.
People love macaroni pasta with cream sauce. Homeroom delivers. We had the chicken pot pie Mac and cheese and a vegan Mac and cheese with broccoli. The chicken pot pie tasted just like a pot pie with noodles; the vegan is always a favorite. Service was a little inattentive midday; wine list was weak (one red, one white, one rose- tasted like it was from a box). The milk shake machine was not in service the day we were in. People rave about the desserts- enough (empty) calories for a week. Leave time for a nap after eating.
The vegan Mac and cheese was not good. The noodles were gummy. The vegan Brussel sprouts are good. Ordered via door dash so I can speak to service or ambiance. Not a repeat place for me.

Super trendy (i.e wait in line) taco spot. At lunchtime they only have "brunch" tacos which skew very breakfasty(eggs, potatoes, no meat tacos). Extremely un kid friendly (no high chairs, bean and cheese tacos had a lot of spicy sauce). Tacos were good but tortillas were a little chewy.
I’ve visited this restaurant three times. During my first visit, the cashier’s attitude was noticeably rude and unwelcoming, which negatively affected what could have been an otherwise great experience. While the food was excellent, the interaction made it difficult to fully enjoy the visit. My second and third visits were more neutral, but the service still felt underwhelming. This place has the potential to be one of my favorite spots—the quality of the food is genuinely outstanding. However, consistent and welcoming customer service is just as important in creating a great dining experience. As someone who works in customer service, I understand how much atmosphere and attitude matter, especially for a restaurant that has received Michelin recognition. The product is there, but the service needs improvement. I truly hope this is something that can be addressed for future guests.
My waitress was horrible, I was dining alone and she pretty much ignored me entirely while being kind and chatty to other customers. She didn't give me water as she did every other table, she got my order incorrect, and didn't check on me at all during the meal despite checking on the table next to me. At the end she offered me a free dessert, which was a kind gesture but did not make up for the bad experience. The Mac and cheese itself was more cheese sauce than anything and gave me instant heart burn. It was actually hard to finish the meal got so boring. Save your money and your time and make Mac and cheese at home, it will most certainly be better.
The cashier was extremely rude and openly irritated when I asked a simple question, acting as if customers were an inconvenience. The tacos were good, but the burrito was very bland and disappointing. With service like this and uneven food quality, I honestly don’t understand the hype around this place.
