The pork belly and pickle sandwich is the best sandwich in the east bay if you like it crispy, fatty, and flavorful. Delicious and light dressing on the shredded lettuce with awesome outdoor seating.
Hidden in the back is a window to a world of joy unknown in most of the bay... R I B S! Really really good ribs, like "How did they do that?" Good ribs Mac and cheese that tastes like your inner child remembers it should Greens fit to be called greens! I threw in a pulled pork sandwich variant with my order and got a face full of cherry pepper relish laced porcine goodness. The look on my wife's face when she bit into the first rib reminded me that I'm not her favorite and I need to be concerned about the cook at this place stealing my good thing.
What a gem! Came in last night to find a well stocked bodega/restaurant/beer garden. this place has it all and the food was delicious. I had the meatball sub and I certainly recommend you try it! The meatballs were like the ones my mother used to make and the sauce was outstanding. The homemade macaroni salad was delicious as well. Pay Stay Gold a visit. You'll be glad you did:)
There aren’t very many places in The Bay quite like Stay Gold. No fuss bbq joint with an expansive back patio and a huge selection of craft beer. Veg options are few but the tuna sandwich is direct and to the point. I’ve definitely cheated and gotten some meat here, every time I do I get my tastebuds rocked. Music is A+. Don’t come here if you’re looking for some kind of polished fake BBQ, this is perfect for those who stray far from the cookie cutter world we live in.
Hidden bar/BBQ joint hidden in a sketchy looking neighborhood. There's a check cashing store across the street and nothing else for blocks! Food was great and the atmosphere was hipster. We went for lunch at 11:30 and the brisket and ribs weren't ready yet. I had the Ruben which was loaded with meat (I think it was Boar's Head brand, which is what their deli counter sells). My only complaint is I missed having a doll pickle.
Awesome bbq, Texas style. Deli items are all well done...best collard greens I've ever tasted. Wines and beer are better than most high-quality restaurants/pubs. Really nice patio area and stable of pinball machines.
Best BBQ I have ever had. Bar none. Generally, BBQ places offer things that are overdone or too sweet. I had all but given up on them because what I make at home is better. Not this place. I hope to one day be able to match Stay Gold's quality and deliciousness. Or, maybe, I will just go there instead of bothering to make my own.
I bought sandwiches for my whole office. This place is great. If you have a hankering for cured, salty, porky goodness, this place makes some awesome sandwiches. The decor is really great, and the staff is really wonderful. There is a little of that tattooed, bearded hipster vibe going on, but who cares when the food is so great.
Punk rock lives. The tacos are yummy. Good drink selection. Pinball machines.
Very good central Texas-style barbecue, as promised! The restaurant is pretty straightforward and leans heavily into a variety of meats, sides, and sandwiches.
My wife and I love this place. It's a bit of a dive, with a welcoming punk atmosphere, many beers on tap, and some of the best bbq in the bay imo. It's not fancy but they smoke their own meat and serve it at a very reasonable price. We get the brisket all the time. So good
Great local sammich joint! I always order the Italian, I want to try other things, but it is just too good!! There are often great deals here on the beers - nice large selection. The BBQ always smells amazing, I still have yet to try it. Pinball machines are usually in good working order and are well maintained. There is also a great back patio space, perfect for having an adorable delicious meal on a nice weather day -- which are most days around here.
I order food online from them every once in a while. It's always good and they have vegan options. It's been a couple years since I last dined in. I was on a bad date at the time but it didn't deter me from enjoying the food from afar. The neighborhood isn't nice to walk around in after a full belly of goodness but I faintly remember the atmosphere. They had a small deli section at one point but I don't know if it's still there. Maybe I'll come to dine in some time in the near future.
Stay Gold is a phenomenal local spot. Not a lot of places in Oakland still like it. Its not cheap but it's worth it. If you're into sandos and bbq this is a place you should 100% try
I can't help it, I always order the pulled pork sandwich. I tell myself I'm gonna order a Reuben this time, but when I get to the counter all I can do is point at the menu and say pulled pork sandwich. Sometimes I get the 2 way or the 3 way plate if I'm gonna share. Those plates have choice of other BBQ'd Meats Beef and Pork, along with the usual sides that you find with BBQ. This place has more than BBQ it has a full deli with many other delicious(so I'm told) sandwiches. One day I'm gonna order that Ruben, and maybe the PoBoy or Italian on a Hoagie, but for now I'll have the Pulled Pork w/ Tangy Slaw sandwich. Let's not forget to mention that for the younger crowd there is very loud live music on the certain days of the week. Seems to be local up and coming bands, some more polished than others. There may be a door charge if you want to stay and enjoy the show. Check the schedule for upcoming shows if your interested in hanging out with a mostly younger indie post punk kinda crowd.
Incredible amazing fall off the bone ribs. The brisket is so very tender and wonderful. We found it’s the best meat we’ve had at any BBQ place. The only draw back is the BBQ sauce. We will gladly come back because the meat was so terrific but will use our own store bought BBQ sauce in a jar . Worth getting for the meat alone.
Insanely good bbq sandwiches, great patio, super nice staff
I believe they make the best sandwich in the East Bay. They nail the Italian style deli sandwich while also having a full complement of BBQ, and there are often specials that have elements of both styles for a fun crossover. There's a big beer selection and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. It's grungy and inviting, and they do events as well. It's a great place to grab a drink, have lunch, meet friends, and have the tastiest sando in your recent memory.
This is a great place to eat and chill in an otherwise baron neighborhood. I had the Pretty Lady and it's was so very tasty! My hubby loved the Butcher sandwich, too! Plenty of seating and fun decor. There's even lots of seating outside and would be great for big groups! I also adored that they had fresh veggies and other groceries for sale. Wil definitely be coming back here!
Hands down the best punk brewpub barbecue joint. Can you name another? A quintessentially West Oakland experience.
Omg! This place is delicious! The ribs are “fall off the bone” good! The service is also great as well! Thanks you for being in the neighborhood! However, the sides could use a little work.
Phenomenal food. The venue is just okay, very limited seating. Very friendly service. The brisket was a little too oily for my liking put the ribs are fall off the bone perfection. Good sides, too
SO good! I had the pulled pork, the brisket and the potato salad and it was all so good. The brisket especially blew me away. It had a beautiful bark on it and gorgeous fat cap with flavor that penetrated all the way through. I cleaned my plate and despite being full just kept wanting more. I highly recommend you try for yourself.
After living in the East bay for 6 years, I've found what I was looking for. The sandwiches are delicious. The specials never disappoint. The beer selection is sizable, varied, and exciting. The music selection is rad. Indoor/outdoor seating options for any sort of weather or mood. This place is a little slice of heaven.
I just ate the best sandwich of the last year—or maybe ever—at Stay Fold Deli. The smoked pulled pork is phenomenal. Love that the food is so good but the atmosphere is no frills. Also, there is a lovely outdoor seating area, complete with a fountain and many happy succulents.
The ribs and brisket are consistently the best I've had anywhere ( even in the South). The collards are also amazingly good if you're ok with some spice. The pulled pork, sausage, and mac n cheese I'm not a fan of. Their side salad, meatball sandwich, Reuben, and brisket sandwich are all also very good as well. They have a large outdoor patio area that is dog friendly and pinball machines inside. Overall they seem to have something for everybody and the inclusive atmosphere is hard to beat. It does look a little rough around the edges, but as long as you care more about the food and not about fancy decor, you'll love this place.
Tonight I ordered a bbq plate (brisket, smoked meatballs, collards, beans). Wow! 5 stars all around. Tenderest brisket ever, great flavor. The smoked meatballs are a treat and the bbq sauces are great. The beans are the best I've had. Highly recommended if you like bbq.
My wife and I love Stay Gold delicatessen. We've been eating here for more than a few years . The brisket is my absolute favorite next to the ribs which are phenomenal as well. The beers on tap a very good all from local breweries. It's nice to go inside order your food grab couple beers and go outside in the back to wait for your food .
Stay Gold was fantastic. The rib plate was fall off the bone wonderful. The brisket was a work of art. The vibe is nice and relaxed. I love the record wall and pinball machines. The patio area is chill with a pool tabel and water fountain. The staff are welcoming. The draft beer selection you will enjoy. I had the Berry Cider YUM.
After driving by maaaaany times and wondering, what is this place and is it delicious? My boyfriend and I finally decided to give it a try on my last night in town for a while … and it did not disappoint! The pulled pork and baked beans were rich with flavor, and the rib meat was tender and melty…. Service is also stellar and there’s even in a pool table in the garden! What a boon! We came a bit late (they close at 8 on thursdays) but weren’t shooed out. Will be back soon :)
Awesome establishment that supports the local DIY punk/metal scene and give kids a safe place to hang out...WITH AMAZING FOOD!!!
I luv local shows and bars, and the shows they play here are GOOD. Sandwiches at 20 dollars are definitely too spensive but damn they're good.
Food and service great! This place is also a good value. Reuben sandwich less than $20 and I took some home. BBQ plate also to big to finish with big slices of brisket and tender ribs with tasty sauce! The beer selection is good and also reasonable prices. I can't imagine anyone giving this place less than 5 stars. Nice backyard to have your meal. Do yourself a favor don't be scared of the location, it's easy to find parking and go get yourself some seriously good meat and beer. My daughter took me here for father's day, perfect choice.
This place is truly a "hidden gem". BBQ has that TRUE smoked flavor and reminds you of that old school backwoods BBQ. The Tex Beans are super good and the Mac n cheese hits that flavor G-spot, as well.
Their brisket is tender and juicy, the ribs are fall off the bone, the beans are delicious, and I love their bbq sauces. Gotta support this Oakland establishment where you can get great BBQ and see a punk show.
This place may actually be the best BBQ joint in Oakland in terms of quality AND price...which is next to impossible to find now days for BBQ. The brisket and ribs are very good. Their beans are good and the greens are alright. Only side I didn't like was the Mac and cheese. Anyways...this is probably going to be my new BBQ go to spot since their meats are really good and they aren't charging an arm and a leg. I look forward to trying their sandwiches as I work my way through their menu.
this is my favorite punk show venue. there's always such a great atmosphere & the service is great, and the food is delicious. i've even seen little kids with their parents come to shows occasionally, and despite the intensity of the shows, everyone is super sweet and mindful of each other. food-wise, i recommend the vegan sandwich. it has smoked tofu, coleslaw, veggies, & sauce--so good! and there's a lovely outdoor area in the back with picnic tables & benches, a fountain, and an herb garden with the most majestic rosemary bush ever. i know there's a wheel chair ramp between the outdoor space & the back door, but i'm not 100% sure if it's wheelchair accessible from the front entrance.

Best barbeque in the bay, and just so happens to be one of its best independent music venues too. A staple of local culture. Just don't walk around alone late at night.
As someone that's lived in Texas for over two decades, Stay Gold Deli didn't taste exactly the same as what I'd find in Texas but they still hit the spot. I ordered the 2 way BBQ plate with brisket, ribs, mac & cheese, and coleslaw, and I was amazed by the amount of food that came with it. The brisket was fatty and tender, and the ribs fell right off the bone. The sauces were great as well. I was beyond stuffed by the end of my meal. I didn't try any of the sandwiches but they look great and I'm looking forward to the next time I stop by to try them.
It's very hip and the vibes is awesome and layed back got to smoke a dubi in the back area and get my food served to me and had really good drafted beer.. and the brisket was awesome....
I uber the Bay area, Oakland & Berkely mostly, and why I've never walked in this place before idk. I am super into rock & the punk scene, but I never find time to stop and meet anyone new. Well just a random Tursday in April and a live punk band happened to play in their little staging area. (8pm) Pretty cool! I ordered the "all that and then some" sandwich, which notably had pork belly. It was nice for what it was... but around $19 for the sandwich. The Mac & Cheese was cool with huge shells, but the sauce was a bit Velveeta- esk. Though I enjoyed the sandwich I got it was just a bit high on the price tag, but I think it was meant to be given all that it's supposed to have. Next time I'll try a more simple sandwich. I'm sure it'll be great. I like the idea of the mystery sandwich.. .maybe that's what I'll do ♡ In the end, I am so glad I stopped in! I have never been to a punk show before as much as I love the music. I'll Def find my way more often.
Excellent food and friendly casual vibe. Good venue for local bands as well.
Great bbq (especially for the Bay Area) and sandwiches, plus a solid selection of beers and ciders. Love the decor, plus they have pinball, board games, and usually a soccer game on tv.
Today was my first time at Stay Gold Deli and I will definitely be coming back. I ordered the BBQ Beef Brisket hot sandwich while my partner ordered The Riblet (pictured). Both sandwiches were delicious and the customer service from Luis was impeccable. This venue offers an assortment of entertainment from board games and pinball machines to TVs for sports fanatics and live music performances on weekends.
Excellent hearty deli sandwiches with homemade remoulade and shredded lettuce; and a whole variety of hearty sides. Stay Gold has a queer-friendly open mic and a cajun punk rock vibe that you won’t find outside of CBGB. A+ experience and homestyle recipes <3
Stay Gold Deli/BBQ in Oakland is a true standout — they’re creating sandwiches you simply can’t find anywhere else in the city. Every bite feels bold, inventive, and perfectly balanced, with smoky BBQ flavors layered on top of fresh, quality ingredients. Their attention to detail shows in every sandwich, from the perfectly toasted bread to the unique sauces and house-pickled additions. The menu pushes creativity without losing that comforting, down-to-earth deli feel. If you think you’ve tried every good sandwich in Oakland, Stay Gold will happily prove you wrong. They also have live music occasionally.
It's just the best barbecue and sandwich deli in Oakland. No frills, just delicious. Get a beer, see a show, play some chess, get your pinball fix. Get the brisket. Get the specials, they're always good. Get the tuna, it's off the hook. You're welcome.
This was a hole in the wall that a few coworkers and I stopped by to visit. You can smell the bbq from around the block. It’s spacious and would be a fun place to hit for Gameday or before a Cal game. I didn’t get to snag a good pic since I was a little embarrassed to do so in front of my coworkers but the Italian sandwich was fat and delicious. My coworker got the brisket sandwich which looked like it was on toasted sliced bread. All the sandwiches sound good and the prices are fair since these are bigger sandwiches. I would love to go here any chance I get.
What a fun time at Stay Gold deli in Oakland. It’s a funky bar with an equally funky outside area with picnic tables and umbrellas to shield you from the sun if necessary. We had the Cubano sandwich and the Reuben. Both were quite good, but we both thought that the Cubana was better. The meat is smoke with a delicate hand, the bread is fresh and the service is pretty quick. We also ordered their brussels sprouts, but we were not overly impressed with those.
Wow! What an absolute hidden gem in Oakland! We just got back from Dallas, craving Texas-style BBQ, and a friend recommended this place. It certainly did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in a welcoming place. People smiled and held the door, and someone even helped my mom, who has a walking disability, to an empty table. They also offered great suggestions from the menu. We ordered the three-meat combo to share, which included beef brisket, pulled pork, and beef ribs, along with two sides and sauces. The meats were incredibly fresh, tender, and juicy – it truly reminded us of the BBQ we've had in Texas. My mom is already planning our next visit later this month to try the rib-let and brisket sandwiches!
Italian sub was super solid with great bread. These are sandwich artists. Plus the BBQ brisket was also delicious. Got it with Texas beans and Mac and cheese. Everything tasted amazing (including the two included BBQ sauces). Everyone was friendly. Def going to be back again soon. Thanks yall for serving the best sandwich in Oakland
I lived in Austin for a long time, so I'm familiar with the style Stay Gold is aiming for. They do a good job! I wouldn't rate it top tier vs some of the places you have around Central Texas, but it's solid. Huge portion of really good brisket! I was actually surprised how much meat I got for the price. Very generous, especially by Bay Area standards! The only minus I would give them is: I'd prefer more onion. But that's a minor quibble. So the food is great. Also I give this place a top atmosphere rating. It's down to earth and unpretentious, a genuine dive. As a bonus, they host live music and--one of the best events in the Bay--Oakland Drunken Film Festival. Long live Stay Gold!
Adorable BBQ place in west Oakland. A bit grungy and I’ve been wanting to try it out for a while especially now with Horn having huge lines. Awesome lunch spot or happy hour outdoor hang out spot. Tried the Riblet sandwich and the Spicy jalapeños brisket sandwich. Loved the riblet, super messy and very mouth watering delicious 😋 would recommend and will try the plates next.
I really enjoy their ribs and brisket. They also do a very good job on the coleslaw. Not a place per se for vegans/vegetarians, but they have a decent selection of drinks at the bar. The atmosphere is friendly and laid back. The outdoor area is nice and there's good room for seating inside. The pinball machines are a nice touch for a very retro feel. Their deli is mostly just the standard stuff you can find at any grocery store.
Mostly delicious barbecue. The meat is tender and pulled of easily, but the texture was thick and chewy enough for my pleasure. Sweet and savory flavors and sauces. The Texan beans are kidney beans. Worth the money for the most part.
I freaking love Stay Gold. Their sandwiches are awesome and they even have legitimate BBQ (I'm from the South so that means something when I say it). They use good ingredients on the sandwiches like fresh mixed greens and flavorful tomatoes. Great beer on tap with the type of selection you can't find just anywhere. Come eat and drink outside in good company. I'm giving it four out of five stars for now since they still have room for improvement in terms of service speed and accuracy.
This deli is quite a little charmer in West Oakland it looks a little grungy fits the neighborhood clientele there’s a homeless encampment next-door along with the shelter but I still feel safe during the day hours to go into the Covid patio safe and order up their combo plate of ribs and brisket for about $17 it is excellent. The menu is full of barbecue favorites the brisket sandwich a pork pulled there is no chicken on the menu at least the one I was handed also there is no potato dishes like french fries or baked potatoes but there is an amazing slaw as one of their side dishes and a wonderful a mac & cheese that helps build the sizzle to the barbecue magic of this cool neighborhood barbecue hang out. As with any barbecue hamlet it is a bit expensive good meat you pay good for the ribs and the brisket for separate plates average around $12-$15 and the combo plate can go up as much as $27 but savor that with one of their favorite local beers and you will really get your bang for your buck at this barbecue deli.
Best brisket I’ve ever had in my life. Recommended sides: baked beans, coleslaw, and collard greens. They ran out of ribs, so we’ll try that next time!
Among the best BBQ in the east bay. (Pig in the Pickle, Phat Matt's, and Smokin Woods are the others.) More of a brisket place. Nice folks, always good service. This location has more choices, plus a solid beer list (10 taps?, Always several exciting choices), and a backyard patio where you can enjoy some sun or shade. Dogs welcome. I've been 4 times. Today's visit was disappointing as the whole patio smelled strongly of stale cigarette smoke. Definitely not wood smoke. Usually it's fine.
Find a job that wouldn't seem so expensive to me but they I like their different adaptations of their barbecue and their cider is phenomenal and the atmosphere and the music the punk scene the whole thing it's just really unexpectedly wonderful
This place providing a delicious Italian deli sandwich. Has New Orleans/Lower Eastside Manhattan vibes. Quality bread. The Italian with no mustard. Oil and vinegar on the lettuce is the way to go. I enjoyed and looking forward to coming back. Benjamin made sure I got the order right. Shout out to him and this new spot. Live music on Saturdays too. Come by and check it out
After spending the morning at the Oakland Coliseum flea market ,it was time to find something to eat. I looked at the time and I said" let's go to Stay Gold". We parked and were second in line. The staff there was very nice and our orders came out promptly .We ordered the beef brisket poor boy and made it a combo ! (chips and soda) We sat down in the patio area and enjoyed our sandwiches... Very good.....
I really wish I could give this place a higher rating, because in love the staff and the social atmosphere. However, in my experience, Stay Gold has been pretty inconsistent. Sometimes everything is great and service is speedy, and other times you'll be sitting there waiting for your sandwich for two hours. (Not an exaggeration, true story.) However, when they're on their game and the weather is nice, it's a great place to have a couple of brews and a quick bite with friends. They usually have a great beer selection, for you brewsnobs out there. *bonus: this place is dog friendly, so bring your pups, or meet cute, new furry friends.
The cashier seemed to be bothered that there were customers. There weren't any people ahead of us and it looked like there was only a few people seated in the patio. The brisket sandwich was mostly fat and it was cold, definitely asked for a hot sandwich, and it was super soggy. I gave three stars for the actual meat we dug out of the sandwich and dipped in sauce. The mac and cheese was grainy and had no flavor. The pickles were good.
I had seen this place on a tv show called check please. Literally went the next day. They were out of ribs and brisket for the plates. Had brisket for a sandwich if you wanted. I ordered a Reuben because they raved about it on the show. There was about three layers of pastrami very thinly sliced,so not a lot of meat. The Italian had more mortadella meat then salami and ham. Overall I will go back because I want to try the ribs and brisket plates. Maybe I can ask for more pastrami on the Reuben.
I love their food when it’s made well. I go often and either receive the sandwich of my dreams (which is usually when the owner is there) or I get served a product that isn’t worth the cost. I have had to return sandwiches on multiple occasions for them missing ingredients, more bread than anything else, or on occasion just the completely wrong sandwich altogether. Today I had my food delivered to me using DoorDash and I didn’t have the luxury of being able to return the product. I ordered a charcuterie(meat and cheese) plate and received a box of pickled vegetables and a pile of hummus. I love the vibe that the business has but sometimes the staff lack hospitality, attention to detail, and can be defensive when mistakes are brought to their attention. I plan to come back and try again because as I said before when this place is good it’s GOOD!
great shows, love this place, but missing the old menu with the BB gun!
Please bring BB gun back 😭😭😭 they simplified their menu, all the unique stuff is gone.
I love the back patio and the funky indoor area. Unfortunately I'm a vegetarian and their extremely limited choices made me order their namesake salad. Just awful; chopped up iceberg with a few bits of tomato and onion and a really vinegary dressing. My hospital's is better. They gave me my money back when i whined but the waiter at the same time said he "liked iceberg". I said I do too, but in a wedge with a classic Thousand Island or Roquefort dressing. If you put your name on a dish you should put more effort in it.
Potato Salad, Greens and Coleslaw were good, Greens we're chopped way to small, tiny, but had good flavor. The ribs had really good flavor n we're seasoned well was like steamed. The brisket was not beef, it was pork and had huge pieces of fat in it. Link sausage was ok. Not the typical southern BBQ. Now the staff, so unfriendly. We order a glass of wine and sat down but they brought our food in a bag. Guess they dint want us to eat there so we finished our wine and left.
Hey these hours are wrong I showed up yesterday and the kitchen was closed at 7:40, foods good I’d had it before. The place needs an owner with passion for it, not some high strung butthat who won’t expect money from someone hungry 20 minutes before their actual closing time.
The website says they open at 10:30 on Saturday, but was informed when I showed up that they didn't open until noon. It's located in a really bad area, with absolutely zero parking. Will not go back. EDIT: The business went and edited their hours of operation after reading this review. Up until a few hours ago, 10:30 am was the posted opening time for Saturday. Their response to this review is all you need to know about how much they don't care about their potential customers and how you can expect to be treated if you visit there. Was disappointed after seeing them featured on 'Check Please, Bay Area'. As a back and forth resident of Louisiana, where you can find a dozen great BBQ places for every one in the Bay Area, was very disappointed. I was really looking forward to munching down, especially after I'd driven an hour to get there. And I know what a lousy neighborhood is like. Three of the top 10 most dangerous cities in America are in Louisiana, but the neighborhood this place is in is right up there. It's really bad. Save yourself some trouble and just go to Hot Boys. They won't give you this attitude.
Don't recommend ordering on their online portal. Had a pick up order placed for a rushed situation and the order was still not ready 20 minutes after it said it would be. The guy simply told me he didn't even notice an order was placed through their portal and I had to wait 10 more minutes (which ended up being closer to 25min). A total of 1 hour and 20 minutes after I had placed the order. I ordered this at 12pm on a Sunday and the place was not packed at all. Shame because was actually excited to try the place.
Placed an online order and when I got there I waited 20 minutes for the guy to tell me that they never received my order. He also said he can't cancel it from his computer and to cancel it online. I checked my email and there was no way to cancel it. I had to call my credit card to not get charged.
I stop because the bar b que smelled really good. The place was really dirty and the cashier had a very nasty attitude. My friend insisted on ordering and the food was not as good as it smelled. The greens was bland, the Mac and cheese was gross. The meat was really fatty, it was a waste of $50.00.
This has legitimately got to be the worst barbecue I've ever had in my life. The meatballs are tough, the brisket wasn't that good, the ribs weren't that good, and the sauce overall lacked flavor. I don't understand how it has such a high rating
