One of my favorite spots to hit when I drop my friends at the airport. Love the Asada Plate, which is well priced.
Probably the most affordable, bang-for-the-buck burrito and quesadilla suiza. They also make a fire bean and cheese burrito if you like to keep it simple on occasion. I think this El Farolito and SF's seem to have pretty good quality control across the board. There is perhaps a dash or teptoo much salt in the finished product, but it definitely is sort of par for the course when it comes to a lot of takeout and sodium saturation (see Wally's Emeryville, for example - probably the saltiest meal for 20 miles).
Solid food amazing price like a sub $10 super burrito in this economy amazing. Food hit the spot got al pastor and was delish. The green sauce was amazing, most places green is kinda bad to mid but this move amazing.
My wife and I randomly decided to try El Farolito and it instantly became our go-to place for Mexican food. The food is really good; we stick to the basics like burritos, nachos, quesadillas and tortas and everything is excellent. The portions are huge and the prices unbeatable. Even the service is nice, just be prepared to wait a bit during busy times. I was hesitant to write a review just so we can keep this place a hidden gem, but now that we've moved out of the area I don't mind saying: El Farolito is the best Mexican restaurant in Oakland and you should go try it yourself!
I’ve been going to El Farolito for about 24 years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots in Fruitvale. The food is always great, and the location in the heart of the neighborhood makes it even better. Highly recommend it
I went in here placed an order and my card was declined. The gentleman at the register was kind and patient and didn't get mad or make me feel stupid for going in and not realizing I didn't have any money. He was really understanding. Nobody made me feel bad for it not the customers other workers. I would definitely recommend this place because when it comes to food if it's a happy positive atmosphere its like it seasons the food.
Menudo is authentic, be prepared, it does have a slight "fresh" odor. Quick service. Nice personal. Great servings for the price. I will definitely come back, looks like this is a popular place too. BTW, not fancy place, don't dress up...
Great burritos that are perfectly filling, the tacos are out of this world, the tortilla chips are thin and crispy, the salsa is awesome (especially the salsa verde), great homemade drinks, great atmosphere, very kind staff, and overall very authentic. This really is the ideal Mexican restaurant. It's next to public transit so it's easy to get to. It is also in one of the most vibrant and authentic neighborhoods in the city. Really don't have one bad thing to say about this place.
I ordered a chicken super quesadilla with some tortilla chips and horchata to drink(12 bucks for all this, a steal imo). My order was ready almost a minute after I paid so in terms of speed this the fastest I ever received my food at a place like this. The quesadilla was big and the taste wasn't overpowering because the choice of meat. The green tomatillo salsa was way better than the red salsa, it's not to say the red one was bad but this salsa is really unique. It tasted really fresh, almost cold and had a real nice spicy kick to it. The chips and horchata were pretty standard, they really rounded off this meal perfectly.
Huge burritos. Good portions. Tasty asada and tripas. Big nachos. Lots of avocado and plenty of beans, tomato, lettuce. Definitely getting your moneys’s worth. Didn’t get the camarones or seafood items. It’s on a Main Street so harder to find parking. All the residential side streets are all taken.
A Tale of Two Meals – Hits, Misses, and a Must-Try Burrito Let’s start with the basics: this spot has metered street parking, and while the area seemed alright, there was noticeable broken glass by the meters—a classic Bay Area reminder to never leave anything visible in your car. Walking into the restaurant, it has an older, no-frills vibe. You head straight to the back where a large menu board hangs on the wall. Pretty straightforward setup. We ordered at the counter—nachos for me and a vegetarian burrito for my partner. They had two flavors of agua fresca that day: horchata and watermelon. Bonus points for bottled Cokes, Jarritos, and a self-serve water station. For under a dollar, you can also snag chips and salsa. That’s a win in my book. Now the salsa—usually I’m a red salsa kind of person, and I avoid the green. But not today. The red was more of a chunky pico, and honestly, it didn’t bring much flavor. The green, though? Tart, bright, and absolutely delicious. Total role reversal. They were pretty slow when we came in, so they brought our food to the table instead of calling out numbers. The staff was warm, helpful, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Let’s talk food. My partner’s veggie burrito? Incredible. Huge, loaded, and hands down one of the best veggie burritos either of us have had—easily top five territory. Now... my turn. The nachos. I’m a nacho lover. I try them everywhere. So imagine the heartbreak when I opened my to-go box and saw a sad, soggy mess staring back at me. Unfortunately, they tasted just as lifeless. The refried beans had decent flavor, but tasted like they’d been made a week ago. The cheese? Overcooked and rubbery, likely from being microwaved too long—which also left the beans looking weirdly pitted and dried out. To top it off, the dish was drenched in sour cream, salsa, and what felt like an entire jar of pickled jalapeños. It was all vinegar, no balance. Honestly? Probably the worst nachos I’ve ever had. So why 4 stars? Because the burrito saved the day. That, and the green salsa. I won’t drag an entire place for one misfire, especially when everything else hit the mark. I’ll be back for that burrito, no question. Pro tip: bathrooms are unisex and very clean—but they were out of toilet paper during our visit. Just a heads-up. 😂 Bottom line: Skip the nachos, get the burrito, and enjoy the hospitality. This place has potential, and I’m definitely coming back for another round (of burritos, not nachos).
Hole-in-the-Wall personified. No atmosphere, spotty service, but if ur looking for the real deal. Quality, quantity, at a pre-pandemic price, try El Farolito. My faves include: super chicken quesadilla. Carnitas quesadilla is good too. Chilli relleno super burrito is also dynamite. If you're willing to brave the heart of International Blvd, you're in for a bargain and treat! 😋😋😋🤑
A bustling diner doing a busy trade, a large percentage carry out. I had the Camarones de Ajo. Prices were very reasonable, the portions generous and the food tasty and nicely spiced. It doesn't pretend to be anything but a nice, quick meal at a good price. I admit to being picky about shrimp, and these were a bit overcooked for my taste. Beans and rice were as expected. Nicely cooked peppers and onions. Sauces available to heat up the spices ad desired (much appreciated).
The staff doesn't speak much English, nor do many of the customers, so you know it's legit Mexican food. Fish Burrito: big hearty burrito with pinto beans and what I'm guessing is Tilapia fish. Really good and filling. I do wish it came with some pico de gallo or salsa or something fresh. Next time I might get the "Super" fish burrito which has avocado in it. Super Nachos: An epic nacho with refried beans, cheese, jalapenos, sour cream, and avocados. Probably best shared, because it is huge. Wish it came with some salsa. Cocktail De Camaron (Prawn Cocktail) - This one was a bit underwhelming. A shrimp cocktail.
I was searching for Mexican food at night and drove along International Boulevard, where I spotted many food trucks. After reading the reviews and looking at their menus, I decided to try a spot that caught my interest. I ordered a shrimp burrito, and when I initially checked the prices posted on maps, I thought they were reasonable. However, once I went inside, I found that the prices were significantly higher than at other places I had looked at. I ended up paying around $17 for the burrito, which was quite small given the price. Although I wasn't impressed with the value, I did enjoy their salsa, and the staff was friendly. The environment was pleasant, and it seemed like a nice dining place. Still, considering the high prices, I think I’ll pass for now and check out the other food trucks instead.
I'm sad to give this Farolito only two stars I've been going to Farolito for over 30 years stop by here at the getting off my flight in Oakland Airport and I ordered a carne asada Super Burrito it was flavorless and gave me a bad aftertaste and it took about 30 minutes to order normally farolitos pretty fast are there burritos are delicious I don't know what happened to this spot
They used to be good and cheap but I just bought a carnitas quesadilla and it was spoiled and the meat smelled and tasted bad!! Chips were stale and old
