Fentons is great big space with just classically great flavors. They have all the classics plus a bunch of fun flavors. It’s not salt and straw crazy but tons of really good options. I got a cherry ice cream that was just great. Worth going to.
We were afraid of the long wait at first but it was pretty quick. Cherry ice cream and blueberry cheesecake ice cream are so good.
I've been coming to Fentons Creamery in Piedmont, CA, since I was 5 years old, crossing the street from Piedmont Elementary every other day after class to get a scoop of ice cream. Now, at 35, I bring my own son to this classic place. The food is amazing, the ice cream is legendary, and the service is great. I'm glad to share this experience across generations of my family and highly recommend it!
This is a classic neighborhood favorite with tons of history behind it. Even though it was a quiet weekday afternoon elsewhere, there was still a line up here. The style of decor, the marble tables, the friendliness of the staff, you quickly see the charm of the establishment. It reminded me of getting ice cream with my grandparents as a kid. There's just something about eating in marble tables that really completes the experience. The two Fenton signatures that we got really hit the spot. I would highly recommend that you stop by if you have an ice cream itch to scratch.
Wow! What an incredible experience it was to go to Fentons Creamery for dessert! Ww could have had burgers and other diner-foods but we focused on their HUGE selection of ice cream varieties as well as combinations of flavors. While we shared three huge scoops of wonderful homemade ice creams, our friend ordered a scoop of chocolate ice cream served with hot fudge! Going to Fentons is a treat for kids of all ages! They also sell delicious ice cream cakes!
We have been Fentons customers for years. On our recent visit we had the Banana Special and The Black and White. Both were huge, and tasted great. On the Banana Special you can substitute different ice cream flavors instead of the standard vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. On the Black and White we sometimes ask for it in a boat (flat) vs a glass (tall), which sometimes makes it a little easier to eat. Small parking lot, but street parking is available.
Nostalgic and fun, a great place to stop for ice cream treats with all sorts of toppings. The place is lively and large enough to accommodate a lot of people. Service was pretty good and friendly. Nice they have their own parking lot, though it’s small so you might not land a space. Sweet potato fries were very good and portion size was generous too.
This is a place where you can feel the ice cream sundae magic that brings you back to childhood. A classic American diner experience. Great burgers, fries, crab melts and sandwiches, and awesome handmade ice cream. The house made caramel is the best I’ve ever had. They are such a great place to go for your birthday and they are a staple of the Oakland and Piedmont community. Definitely go here!
I been coming here for the past 50 years. This is one of the best ice cream parlors in the bay area. I love how consistent the flavors are. Every year the birthday day celebration gets bigger and better. If you're not familiar. They make the ice cream in house. Along with the syrups. Nothing beats the taste of homemade caramel sauce. If your overwhelmed by the selection, I recommend getting the black and tan
Best ice cream I've ever had. I got a Black and tan and I highly recommend it to anyone who goes. They also have a ton of other sundaes and ice cream options to choose from. There's a whole menu of food and desserts. The atmosphere is fun and family friendly. A must visit for anyone visiting Oakland.
It’s a ten years tradition for me and my family every time we are in Oakland to go to Fentons and have the Saddle black brownie. It’s so big that we always share. Food is tasty, also shareable. Staff is nice and location is pretty. Get ready to do a big line, but it goes by really fast!
The best, the biggest, and the tastiest sundaes on the West Coast! A Bay Area destination for years! For you workout queens, try their organic, vegan, non-fat, sugar-free, treats that...WAIT...WAKE UP...if you believe this part, go buy a kale and carrot smoothie at Whole Foods. We're talking about an ice cream shoppe that produces sundaes of massive proportions...not a health food store! So if you dare, and if you want a fun family event, or simply a fun date, cruise into Oakland to this ice cream institution that will leaving you wondering when you're going to come back for more!
The only thing that has changed since I was a kid is inflation and the makeover they did years ago, The lines were long then and it hasn't changed. My grammy's favorite black olive and cream cheese sandwich and the crab sandwich are exactly the same, the black and tan has not changed nor has the Hot Fudge Sundae or the Banana Split (still can't finish it, bring a friend) parking sucked then and it still sucks today but I figured it out, bring an electric scooter in the trunk, drop off the fam to stand in line, drive away and park, Take your time and ride back half baked, Lock up the scooter and get in line, By then the wait isn't long and you do not care cause your gonna order diner and a sundae you will never finish, don't forget to wear a bib sucka fish!
Delicious, perfect ice cream. Today I tried a flavor I don't remember seeing here, or anywhere before, Coffee Cookie Dream. Wow it was great. But the new menu item I loved best was the sampler. 3 or 6 small scoops, which is perfect for when you can't decide. Don't make the mistake that I did which is going with the three instead of the six. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the three but they are small and the six would have been just right.
First time visiting with my wife. Came with friends who live in the Bay area. Friendly, fast service. Warm and welcoming atmosphere. Clean and comfortable establishment. Ice cream is amazing. A really noticable difference from "store bought" and other brands. Enjoyed our visit very much. As time and weather permits, we will definitely be back! Great work staff and store, you have a real gem in this place!
Best ice cream around. Been going here all my life, I was born just down the street. Real treat to go back.
This was one of the highlights of our trip. The food was great and the service was amazing. They were extremely busy but everything came out in a good time. The ice cream was also some of the best I've had with lots of options to choose from. Definitely stop by if you are in the area.
If you go here make sure your hungry for good ice cream cause that’s what you’ll get . The servers are very friendly , it’s often crowded but I have gotten in within 15-20 minutes most times I went and I have 5 in my family . Now the food is good the crab salad sandwiches are scrumptious and yummy . The ice cream portions are big , order the petite for a one person portion . I read others reviews of this place band all I can say is if you don’t give this place 5 your delusional in your expectations of what a good , busy ice cream shop is ! Not to mention all the nostalgia that this place exhibits. If you want great ice cream and fun , come to Fenton’s
I love the coffee cookie dream & mocha chip ice cream. Their regular food is yummy too. Love the Cobb salad and chicken Philly sandwich 🥰 I go to the location in Vacaville 🩷
I love the ice cream here. The bacon cheeseburger I had was good too. My Single Sundae was everything. Plus, I haven't had one in a long time so I really enjoyed it😂. My granddad had the Banana Jr. It was a lot so I hate to see what the Banana Special would look like. Whenever I go to Cali to visit my grandparents, my granddad always brings the family here for banana splits, sundaes, etc. The atmosphere was pleasant and friendly and the customer service was good too.
Amazing ice creams, and food. We visited on Saturday noon, low waiting time. Sara is an amazing service host.
Came for lunch and ice cream with my parents.Split a crab sandwich with my mom, as we do every time we have lunch at Fenton's. Dad had an egg salad sandwich which he said was good. My husband had fish and chips which he enjoyed. Followed up with yummy ice cream.
While on a business trip, a coworker who has family ties to Oakland took me to Fentons and I'm glad he did! I think I may have to make that a routine stop on my trips to the Bay area. Had the Fenton Club with fries...which I would recommend for a meal. However, the Cookie Connection was the main attraction and it did not disappoint!
Australian family in San Francisco visiting family and visited Fentons on our first night in San Francisco. Totally great place to eat. Oscar, our waiter, was very helpful and friendly. The ice cream is unbelievably beautiful, especially the caramel almond crunch. Serves are huge. I couldn't finish the ice cream. Update: We loved Fentons so much we returned to Fentons on our last night in San Francisco on December 4th, and once again, they didn't disappoint. Great place, and the ice cream is totally awesome.
Absolutely amazing and the BEST FRIED ZUCCHINI EVER!! we ate them before we could post. Oscar was delightful. We came from horrible service at the cheecake factory in the city to amazing food and deserts at Fentons. The ice cream was fresh, and service came with a smile. Going back today to try the salads.
Always worth an extra trip to go here. Good good. Great ice cream dishes. Friendly staff and floor managers. Family-friendly atmosphere.
The cheeseburger was quietly sublime. The salt stuck to the fries, which were excellent. I used to visit frequently, and I feel like I need to come back more often. Also the ice cream is good.
I didn't have time when I was there... The Buffalo Style Chicken Wings was the best among all those dineries I had tried it. It is exactly how I like it. I found the exact taste I used to have in eating the original Beef'oBrady's Buffalo Style Hot wings. Best in the US for me. Since I was staying nearby, I even had the wings as my late breakfast. Thanks to my brother who took me there... I hope they don't change the taste and style before my next visit.
Fenton's is Oakland's finest ice cream parlor (arguably) and for good reason! They have a plethora of flavors (no sampling) and different ways to experience - scoops, sundaes, sandwiches. I got the chocolate peanut butter crunch single scoop and man was it delicious. I could taste the real peanut butter crunch with every spoonful. The place was packed on a Saturday night and we had to wait 10 minutes to order, but it was worth the wait. Seating inside is only if you dine in - they do have a few benches outside if you're just getting ice cream here. Come here if you're looking for some quality ice cream and to support a local favorite.
I've been going to Fenton's since I was a little kid and it's always on point. Typically, we went there just for just ice cream so I didn't remember/realize how impressive their non-creamery items were! I used to get their famous crab sandwich but I opted for the BLT on my last visit and I could only finish half! If you're ever in Oakland, don't miss the chance to hit it up!!!
Fentons is the true old-school ice cream experience in the East Bay. The ambiance takes you back to the 1950s and the sundaes are super tasty. Been here many times and will definitely come back again. Would probably come more often (and weigh 10 pounds more) if their prices were lower — their prices are super high, probably because there’s no place around like it.
Hands down the best ice cream in the county!! The care that goes into every creation - from black and tan sundae to a simple scoop of vanilla is undeniable. There used to be a small Fentons at OAK airport Southwest Airlines gate area but unfortunately that seems to have closed during COVID. Gotta make the journey to the mother ship on Piedmont Ave. I’ve been going to Fentons for the past 52 years!
One of the best, if not the best, ice cream shop and restaurant in the Bay Area. Not only is this place featured in the Pixar animated film Up but it defiantly lives up to the endorsement. The dinner and lunch food is tasty, not the best, but the ice cream, oh my goodness they do this well! All the ice cream is made in house, and is of the highest standard. If you get even a small scoop it will be more then worth your time. I love getting the Black and White with marshmallow on top. Only down side is the side is the parking lot is tiny. I usually park on the street and walk a block or two. Going back for my birthday and a few friends, never regret it!
Fentons Creamery is a classic diner spot in a nice neighborhood of Oakland famously known for its selections of awesome tasting ice cream 🍨. They also have diner food to serve as well such as sandwiches, fries, etc. the great thing about Fentons Creamery is that it open relatively late ⏰ to serve your late night cravings. And very friendly service! There’s a small parking lot but other places to find on side streets.
Fentons is always a special place for my dad and I, this time was no exception! Had a vanilla malt with fudge blended for the ultimate black and white while my dad had the regular sundae with fudge on the side for dipping. Everything from stem to Stern was AMAZING and we'll always be back!
This ice cream shop is a sweet gem! Perfect spot to treat yourself. Haven’t tasted ice cream better than the way they make it. Love this place.
Celebrated a Christmas week Birthday here. It was super fun! They have a lot of savory food. The sundae I had was very yummy! I would love to come back for lunch sometime.
People rave about the genuinely delicious, high-quality, handmade ice cream, generous servings, and excellent service, making it a go-to spot for a superior dessert experience. Friendly, fun staff, clean shops, cute decor, and comfy seating (indoor/outdoor).Texture: Creamy, rich, dense, not too airy, with quality ingredients.
Great burgers (my husband ate the burger before I can take a photo), fries are crisp and the onion rings have a great tasting batter!!! Service is friendly and prompt! They deserve your gratitude; tip them in cash! Oh, we shared a petite ice cream, vanilla scoope with chocolate and caramel on the side (I ate it before I could take a photo 📸). You know how that goes; enjoy when you get around to visiting with them.
My family and I have been going here for a decade I can’t believe I hadn’t made a review on fentons before🤦🏻♂️. Best place for ice cream and you can dine in or walking and walk out with your scoop. Your kids will love it it’s worth a drive. Parking is a little difficult but if you don’t mind walking down the street there’s a public parking lot.
We ordered their seasonal flavors as Strawberry sherbet and cherry vanilla. They were so amazing tastes and I have never tried this kind of textures of ice cream before, it was smooth and chucks of fruits inside really made it amazing. The sweetness also perfect! It was a long line when we went on weekend. We ordered to go and sit outside beside the fountain.
This place was awesome. The ONLY gripe I have (and it’s not a real gripe!) is that the portion was HUGE. if you’re going to order any of the sundaes, make sure you bring 3 friends with you!!! We definitely lost the battle with this one. The server was quick and friendly, and you can change two things about the sundae before they start charging you. The chocolate chip cookie was awesome and the vanilla bean ice cream was just the right amount of sweet.
5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a great experience at Fentons Creamery in Piedmont! Along with their famous ice cream, we ordered the crab sandwich and the burger, and both were absolutely delicious. The crab sandwich was fresh and flavorful, and the burger was juicy and cooked just right. What really stood out was the warm and welcoming service — the host made us feel right at home. It’s amazing how after all these years, Fentons still maintains its iconic charm and high-quality food. A true Bay Area classic that never disappoints! Highly recommend for a casual meal or a nostalgic treat.
Always love this place for the awesome ice cream and decadent sundaes. They make the best toppings and especially the 'Jersey topping' which is malted whipped cream. You also have the option to order your sundae in a boat for easier sharing if you choose so. Although the place is always packed and very loud, I feel super happy when indulging into the Black & Tan with Jersey topping and usually finish it all. If you come for lunch or dinner, be sure to try their snow crab sandwich which is very good and one of their popular favorites too. If you're looking for a loud and lively place, this is a must stop in and be ready to sing 'Happy Birthday!' several times while there.
I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, although I haven’t been back in 20+ years since I left the East bay, but now that I’ve moved back, it’s nice to go to a place I can my kids to that I went to… very nostalgic for me! The store is definitely upgraded from what I remember it being. The service is fast and efficient, at least at the ice cream counter. As for the ice cream, there are a plethora of flavors to choose from. I went for the Rocky Road and it was delicious; the chocolate ice cream was creamy and it was full of marshmallows and nuts, great textures! This won’t be the last time we come here!
First off, the food (salads, appetizers, sandwiches and burgers) are delicious and fresh. But now onto what you go for....ice cream 🍨! It's some of the best treating I've cream I've had, the portions will definitely leave you in disbelief and the creations come up with are amazing. I really wish I lived closer and could eat there more often but it's probably a good thing for my waistline lol.
The ice cream is legendary, but if I’m being honest, the service usually sucks. I get my ice cream to go because the servers rarely get the order right, and they seem bothered to have to serve you. My all time favorite ice cream is their toasted almond. If you love hot caramel on your ice cream, they have some of the best here. It’s definitely worth a stop, just dine in at your own risk.
Food is not bad, steak sandwich was really good! Good serving sizes, pistachio ice cream isn’t my fav, bubble gum is so yummy!! We also got the blueberry swirl and strawberry cheesecake, it’s great as well! I think they have the specials that change pretty regularly as well, which is very interesting.
Good : A great family resturant. Very american style food that is always delicious. The menu has healthier and less healthy options to cater to all. Fentons has a nice feel of an old ice cream parlor. A perfect spot for a child's birthday party as they do sing and give an ice cream treat. Portion size is large and filling. Also was featured in the Pixar movie "up", which is a fun fact! Bad: Acoustics are bad and it gets very loud inside, so not a great place to have a first date or chat with family or friends. Also the tables are very small and cramped (especially in groups of four). Usually pretty crowded. Parking is also difficult to find so expect to walk a bit. Finally you are paying for the name. Food and ice cream are large quantities but still rather expensive.
Service was a little unfriendly and no one even checked back on us during our meal so see if we needed anything. But the Reuben was delicious. I didn't care much for the potato salad. My friend had the French dip. She said it was delicious as well
Can we talk about Fentons? If you’re looking for the old grease lightning vibes this is definitely where you go and the most expensive ice cream you will purchase in the bay area. Why? Because it’s a creamery they have a very limited selection so if you were looking for extraordinary zoom zooms and whams you’re better off going to cold Stone this is your place that your child will have their first banana split your son will take his first date. The ice cream’s are pretty big when you do get them but the star is the actual food good all American food hamburgers made like a hamburger should be made corn dogs hotdogs indoor and outdoor seating. you’re literally here for the ambience and the sampler plate. Your waitresses and waiters are high school students with maybe two people of seniority.
Best ice cream. Good American canteen, tasty French fries, but really good ice cream. Enough said.
Fun place with a family friendly atmosphere. The menu has plenty of variety including burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Their icecream desserts are fantastic! Overall it's a touch on the expensive side, especially for a scoop of icecream, so you might want to save a visit for a special occasion.
A classic for late-night cravings and a best place to satiate the whims of your sweet tooth! I have been here multiple times since moving to the Bay area...and its not much different in terms of long queues that end with a generous serving of ice cream sundae of your choice. My only recommendation: come here empty stomach, and take it taht you WILL underestimate your capacity to eat ice cream. The portions are huge! All flavors are delish, but very limited (close to none) options for vegan or lactose free desserts. Sorbet options are not one of the best here... That said, please go ahead and ride the Wonderful saddleback brownie sundae, or strawberry ice cream. And the seasons special (pumpkin) is worth a try!
Our group of 16 ate there (sandwiches, lunch) and had ice cream for desert. Parking was OK (we had about 6 or 7 cars). The food was pretty tasty.
Have come here few times for ice cream and couple times to eat a bite! Food is 3.5 stars, old school burgers, sandwiches and other items are pretty decent. Ice cream is quite nice although i only like few choices that are light otherwise most of the stuff is pretty heavy, though it's homemade style so all good ;) Old time favorite is the junior size black tan sundae and the petite size scoop of caramel crunch :) Place is usually busy no matter the season with enough indoor seating and few seats outside with a cute little fountain. Bathrooms are neat and clean most of the time. Service is quick and super friendly :)
I love the menu, and while the food overall was just okay, the clam chowder was fire! It’s such a nostalgic place, and I really enjoyed sharing it with my son and in-laws. We had a great time!
Pure chaos inside and out and overpriced, but a really fun experience. In our experience and Insta-friendly world, places like Fentons either thrive or die. Fentons has thrived with their old-timey soda fountain feel and wide and yummy menu, but the added popularity has brought total chaos outside and in managing the demand. Food is yummy and almost all “comfort” of diner type foods. Ice cream menu is huge and all items were great. Prices are high but portions are big. Expect long and confusing waits for a table, long waits for food and a very loud and chaotic environment. Is it worth it? Sure. Would I do it again? Eh….
BLT phenomenal! Sourdough buttered and toasted perfectly. Bacon slightly thick, but crispy. The lettuce was crisp, tomatoes were a smidge over ripened. Large portion sizes on everything I saw the wait staff bring out. Large selection of Icecream options, also generously served. Restaurant extremely crowded and loud. The wait staff is amazing; excellent knowledgeable of the menu, they work together (doesn’t matter who the assigned wait person is, they help out), good old fashioned customer service. Parking is horrible.
I visited here almost 30 years ago with friends and ordered a quite memorable black and white sundae. Visited today and got an equally memorable cookie connection sundae (IIRC). Service is wonderfully informal, some may find it too informal -- the staff get along very well. I enjoyed that and their lively interactions. Stick-in-the-muds may find it too lax.
Come here on weekday to enjoy a nice lunch in this warm and friendly restaurant on piedmont avenue in oakland. The food is quite good, portions are generous, prices are reasonable and service is excellent. I recommend this restaurant. Oh and they make excellent ice cream. A little pricey but very good. Seasonal flavors are fantastic
Used to be the spot back in the day now. It's just really disorganized and super dirty and run down. The employees aren't super friendly and it's just not what it used to be. Ice cream is still good though . Also, it's 2024. Can y'all add additional non-dairy options?? (For my non dairy folks who don't just want sorbet)
Ice cream is the reason! Hamburger lunches were horrible, our waitress that day looked and acted annoyed we were there. Other staff were friendly! However unbelievable history & ice cream!
I absolutely love Fenton's and went there today after a meeting... My black and tan sundae was $24.22. They are good, but not at that price. It's absolutely crazy how expensive they have gotten.... I also realized when I got home that the second flavor was not the one I had asked for, thankfully it was when I like. But I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. At least not if I'm the one paying!
Ever since I heard about this place, I wanted to visit this ice cream parlor so this was a first time visit. The place is cute! Very nice atmosphere, friendly, welcoming & warm staff. Service is super!! Parking is challenging. Once inside, we had Ice cream which was ok. Food left much to be desired in terms of flavor. Except for their onion rings which were delicious, I ordered a BLT and my son a cheeseburger. In my BLT I could only taste buttered bread and nothing else. Really disappointing. I didn't finished the sandwich because it wasn't good; And the hamburger was bland and tasteless as well I probably may no return but I am glad I crossed off an item from my bucket list 🙂.
My kid had been asking about an ice cream sundae for a few days. So finally went to Felton’s. We waited for about an hour for our sundae… couldn’t wait any longer. This would’ve been a one star review, but we had been there before and had a more positive experience
I ordered some ice cream with the fam and all we wanted to was to sit for a few minutes but the restaurant employees that work there were super rude and unfriendly like they wanna fight you. They need to train their employees to respect everyone and to deescalate problems but instead we get a bunch of amateurs who just work there. The ice cream people were professional though is just the restaurant part that sucks.
The food at this place is some of the worst food available in Oakland. I've eaten here twice with friends for the lovely communal and nostalgic factor but don't plan on returning ever. $14 for a grilled cheese sandwich on white bread with a couple pickles from the bottom of the jar. The sandwhich was so bad and unintentionally made. We were not offered water or any napkins, straws, or condiments by the waitstaff. We paid for a shared plate and never received a shared plate. We asked for it and it never came. We had to go up and get our own to-go container so that we could share our meal. The pricing discrepancy from dine-in and counter service ice cream is also rather bizarre. The pricing even with inflation and paying livable wages for one scoop of ice cream if you're sitting here is really weird and not on par with the rest of the Bay Area ice cream pricing.
