My wife and I go in as often as we can. It's the kind of place that you just want to come back to. The food and the hospitality are excellent. They make the best chicken fried steak I've ever eaten.
MUST visit San Luis Obispo staple for breakfast, breakfast burrito, omelets, country fried steak, big ol country scramble, coffee, fruit, quick eats, to go orders and more! Do not miss out on this breakfast spot, it is maybe the best no frills breakfast in San Luis Obispo. Skip Lure and get a meal here. Andres and Demi are both incredible staff and I have watched each of them go above and beyond for patrons literally every time I visit this location. Thank you so much for all the coffee and the incredible food. Your art with a coffee cup is appreciated and thank you Demi for the local oddity shop recommendation!
The wait is very rewarding♥️ If you sit to watch the men cooking, preparing the plates and the waiters working its amazing how well they work together to feed a big crowd. The food is in large portions and very tasty! We will be a returning!
The short of it is that Cowgirl Cafe is a great diner where the food is honest, the coffee is good, there's always an open seat and you're welcomed like family. The service here is really outstanding. I've been to just about every place in SLO. If you're living here and have a thing for diners, GO HERE, you can thank me by tipping them well. If you're passing through and you just want an honest restaurant that's going to treat you right on the way to or from somewhere, do not hesitate to stop here, its literally just off the 101. IMPORTANT FUNNY NOTE: Sometimes the front door is hard to open because the kitchen vents create a vacuum, makes people think it's closed. If you're having trouble they will help you!! More details below (because the owners read this stuff too!). The name "Cowgirl Cafe" is a little misleading because you might conjure up images of line-dancing, loud country music, bar fights and peanut-shell covered floors. That's what kept me from trying this for so long, what a mistake on my part! There is no bar but the kitchen view counter seats feel like a bar. The decor is "western" but what it actually is (to me) is a very friendly but quiet place to grab some food that feels like a home away from home. A place I truly feel welcome. Always a lot of seating, and the chef is rumored to be coming from a high-end hotel hospitality background -- it shows. Seriously that club sandwich I get is outstanding! It represents what I miss most about the US when I travel outside of it: An honest, independently owned mid-range diner with great food that punches way above expectation, coffee that's exactly what you want (if you like diners), a kitchen you can see and people (I'm looking at you Kayla) who remember your name when you come back making you feel like you're a part of this community. This isn't a knock: In SLO I can find ultra-gourmet restaurants or chains that are pretending to be the same --but sometimes I just want to sit down at a counter, have a decent cup of joe and a sandwich. I want to support a locally owned business, not a similarly priced IHOP or Denny's and I definitely do not want fast food. I want to go to a place with people who care about what they do but I don't need the prefixed menu with optional wine-pairings. I just want a place I can walk into as I am and be accepted. I want a sandwich that my grandmother would make for me if she came back to life. That's Cowgirl Cafe.
I have driven past this cafe many times..decided to stop in for lunch..I'm so glad I did!! Had a perfect Patty Melt with fries..delicious!! The service was great and the servers friendly! Will be stopping in again! Btw..only breakfast and lunch is being served. Please do stop by and give this small independent eatery a try..you'll be glad you did!!
The portions are huge! We got two breakfast burritos and could barley eat half.
Oh my lord, the food here was great. Servings are HUGE but delicious. Definitely get the hash browns and the biscuits and gravy. Skip the grits as it's more soupy than it should be. If you order pancakes, be aware that they are bigger than dinner plates.
Man I love this place. They staff is so nice and I always love the chicken fried steak and gravy. I got it in a burrito and my life was made. Also I'd say they've got some pretty great pancakes. And blueberry syrup. And good sized portions
Very friendly staff! I had scrambled eggs and bacon with hash browns. It was all cooked just the way I like. The bacon was thick cut and cooked to perfection. My kids had the French toast, plain and with strawberry topping. Both looked yummy, and my son was scrapping the plate clean. The portions are just right.
Super cute little restaurant walking distance from our hotel. Fast, friendly service, delicious food, good portions and very reasonably priced. Definitely recommend.
Great place. The veggie omelet was the best I’ve ever had. Great coffee. The service staff were very friendly and attentive. We will definitely stop here again. So close the the 101 that is super easy to get to.
food is delicious! the staff was super nice, but a little slow at times (to be fair, its a saturday at brunch, so they were quite busy). ran ~15-20 dollars per person. my favs were the strawberry french toast and the scrambled eggs :]
Veggie omelette was delicious. Coffee was pretty good. Good brunch spot. Has some outside seating which is nice.
My favorite place to eat in SLO. The breakfast is amazing and the atmosphere is so relaxing.
Ordered the country patty sausage and eggs, and my wife ordered the ham and cheese omelette. They have “real” hash browns here that are shredded potato that are cooked on the grill to be made crispy. Excellent service !
Great service and great food. Staff are always friendly and know us by name. They also never forget our student discount which is a plus.
Amazing southern style comfort food. The biscuits and gravy are out of this world. The wait staff was really nice and attentive. I did overpay a bit for a mimosa but now I just know not to get one the next time I go. Great environment and just an overall good experience. I will definitely go back.
The food and service were great. Had the French toast with strawberries, whipped cream, eggs, sausage patty was huge and bacon was cooked a little done.
You won't leave hungry. Breakfast is done well and there are lots of options. I recommend the grits with an omelette.
I enjoy a casual diner with good food and friendly service. We got both here. The sausage gravy & biscuit was recommended and did not disappoint. The pancakes were excellent as well. Will return when next in SLO
Staff was very friendly and attentive, seemed like a popular place because of how many people, great food options, JUMBO plates good price, food was delicious. My friend got strawberry pancakes and they were so good. I got chorizo and eggs plate which was great! Lots of condiment options. Great job ⭐️
Stopped by with my daughter. Corned beef hash was delicious. Great service, reasonably priced and cozy interior. They have parking next to the cafe which is very convenient. I will certainly go back when I visit SLO next.
One of the two or three restaurants within a couple of minutes driving or 20 minutes walking from Cal Poly, it's conveniently located at the junction of US 101 and CA 1. It has an upbeat atmosphere with interesting pictures and a logo of “Old Cal Poly” on the walls. Service is fast, friendly and efficient. The menu has a wide range of choices and the food is attractively presented and very tasty. It is definitely a place to go if you’re in the vicinity or just driving by.
Friendly staff and great food! Had the turkey sandwich with avocado & fries. Really enjoyed it. The hubs had an omelet with a side of biscuits and gravy. The B&G were out of this world! Reminded me of my grandma's. Their pancakes, chicken fried steak, & omelets look amazing. Can't wait to come back to try them all!
We Love Supporting Our Lil Town Of San Luis Obispo!!! They Know Us. They Know Our Favorites. They Are Always Fresh, Clean And So Polite. We Love Their Food. Their Enviroment Is Top Knotch. 💜💜💜
Great old fashion breakfast and they have grits. Great atmosphere and service.
I absolutely love this place. It's a hidden gem. The food is so delicious!!!! The service is fast. I always get the potato skins vegetarian style with Avocado and a biscuit with jam on the side. I crave this weekly! The prices are also great. I want to name my waitress Kayla who was personable, on top of service, and ahead of my needs. She was great! I also want to name the amazing cook Jesus. He makes all the homemade salsa. I have tried another location and the food just was not good because Jesus was not there. I think he needs to train the other locations. They don't have the same salsa, potato skins, or even the style of egg he puts on top is all different and unique. Please have Jesus train the other staff and use his recipes at the other locations!
Great spot! Easy to get to and away from the main Boulevard. Great coffee and delicious food. Wasn't a fan of their biscuits and gravy or pancakes but their other breakfast dishes were on point. Mom enjoyed every bite. Friendly and fast service. Lots of college students. Top notch.
We love this location for a nice greasy spoon type breakfast. Just had a delicious chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy! Portions are enormous and service is always a 10. Also, for lunch the cheeseburgers are my absolute favorite!
We stopped for a late breakfast and the restaurant was still busy - which to me is a good sign. There was a short wait for a table, and the staff were very friendly. The food was delicious. The biscuits and gravy are FORGET ABOUT IT, so good. The omelets and pancakes were so good. The veggies in the veggie omelet had a lot of actual peppers - which was really nice. The meals were really hearty and very fulfilling. If you are in town or cruising through, it is well worth a stop. Side note: The staff ran this restaurant like a top. It was really impressive, honestly - they'll take really good care of you.
Nice place, friendly. Good food, it was delicious!
First time at Cowgirl Cafe and my fiancè and I had such a good experience. Kayla was our server and she was beyond amazing. Big personality, super friendly, and just a wonderful person. We had their breakfast and the food was amazing! We will definitely be back! Thanks again Kayla! 😊 Your effort does not go unnoticed ❤️
Service is wonderful and they take 5% off your total bill when you pay in cash. I love saving money so that's an obvious plus. Cal poly/custa students get 5% off with their school is. Potentially getting a whole 10% off if they also pay in cash!!!! Their cook is AMAZING!! I've seen him handle a whole full restaurant by himself during the weekday and the food always comes out hot and delicious.
On my journey to find good breakfast burritos because I’m on a burrito binge, I decided to try the breakfast burrito at Cowgirl Cafe. The experience overall was great! Staff greeted me and was very kind throughout the entire service. They came often to check on me, the meal, or to top off my coffee. The food it’s self was great! I got the breakfast burrito with sausage being my meat or choice. I got a home fries as the side and asked for a short stack of pancakes. The burrito tasted great! It was a good size and the sausage and egg mixed well. The sausage in particular was real good! The home fries were AMAZING! Highly recommend that and getting (I think it’s called) pepper sauce or salsa. Tasted amazing. The short stack pancakes were nice and fluffy. They come cowgirl size which means they were nice and thick! Definitely would come back here.
So much food had to take 1/2 to go and I can eat a lot....... The biscuits n gravy were sooooooo deeeelish and the scrambled eggs were soft and fluffy with super crispy bacon although it may have been deep fried as the bacon wasn't full of bacon fat flavor .......my friend loved the corned beef hash even though it wasn't from scratch they made it super crispy....and he never gets over medium eggs done right but he did HERE...... my phone flash wouldn't work so the pics don't do it justice..... Bummer
If you're a fan of big breakfasts then you'll love this place! Portions are generous and the food is bomb! Atmosphere is exactly what it says... cowgirl. Staff is friendly and helpful. I always order the Kitchen Sink omelet which is properly named. This thing has everything in it!! Add giant pancake on the side along w the hashbrowns and it fills me up every time! Other breakfast favorites that have left smiles on the faces of fam and friends include their french toast, waffles and biscuits and gravy!! Def recommend!!
We absolutely love this place! We stopped in while traveling through town and are so glad we did. Everything was excellent
Food was great! Try the country scramble... yumm! Our server "Demi" was great! Very polite and attentive. 5 stars all the way around for me. ❤️
The service is amazing it's hard to find great service like that they pay attention to you The food is great The atmosphere is amazing
Excellent service The One Girl Crew By Herself Served The Good Of 10 People That Was My Family She Did The Cooking Serving And Filling Our Drinks One After Another All My Her Self Not Just Our Table But Other People Dining Too WOw
The ribeye breakfast was a very filling and tasty breakfast special. The sunny-side up eggs were cooked well. The hash browns were very crunchy. I added a side of sausage links because I love having sausage with my breakfast. The steak was cooked well and had the perfect bite to it.
Great place to meet with friends or take your family and it's very convenient because it's right off the highway. If you are driving southbound approaching San Luis or need to leave southbound, this is the quickest way to get a bite to eat on and off the freeway
A ham cheese and mushroom omlette. AND the best biscuit and gravy ever. I'll take Cowgirls over any restaurant in Beverly Hills, CA. Forget Ceasars Place in Las Vegas. Awesome. Just plain awesome.
What a gem! I've driven by this place so many times and never at the right time. Today we specifically decided to try it and it did not disappoint! Delicious food! Great service, I didn't have to ask for coffee refills. The gravy was different than I usually have with biscuits but it was tasty.
I love the Cowgirl Cafe. The food and service is excellent. They have all kinds of history here. I am super happy each time I eat here and I highly recommend their biscuits and gravy which are top notch. Thank you for serving us with such care and respect. I also really have enjoyed the expert care and service by Demi, the super awesome waitress who is always ready to smile and help me pick out awesome food to try each time I pass through this side of the country! Thank you very much!
Food was equally as good as the one I’ve been to in Paso Robales. Found the interior / exterior a bit campy…. Like lacking in all authenticity and desperately trying to rebrand the space as something other than a former fast food restaurant. Our waitress Demi was a rockstar and was single handedly crushing serving the whole dining room on her own…. While also winning the hearts and minds of my own children. Cheers! And will be back next time we’re in the hood.
We hit up Cowgirl Cafe for our July 4th celebrations and had an awesome breakfast experience! I ordered scrambled eggs, sausage links, hashbrowns, and toast—all of which were delicious. The French toast, though a bit smaller than expected, was surprisingly filling and rich! The atmosphere was charming, with a cozy decor that added to the friendly vibe of the place. While some booths could use a refresh, the overall cleanliness of the restaurant was on point. I especially liked the open kitchen concept, which gave it that comforting 'home-cooked meal' vibe. Definitely a great spot for a satisfying breakfast with a welcoming ambiance!
I ordered the chicken fried steak and strawberry French toast with a side of links and biscuits and gravy instead of bread. The eggs and hash browns were good. The gravy here is unique, it’s some kind of blend with chili peppers so it has a spicy profile to it which is good but not sure if I’d want it every time. They should allow for a choice of traditional white gravy or the modified. The French toast was good, strawberries were fresh. Links were average, could’ve tasted better. I’d get the bacon or ham next time.
On my last day in SLO i came to have breakfast in this cafe. The atmosphere is very cool! Western stuff everywhere, John Wayne as a cowboy, a cowgirl statue and barb wire painted on the wall. The service was superb! Very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu when asking for recommendations. Gave us eye contact and a smile every time! The food was delicious 😋 i had an omelette with hash browns. I tried the french toast and it was also very delicious. Do not hesitate this place is perfect. 10/10 would recommend. I eat very plain so do not judge the way i ordered my omelette.
Excellent breakfast/brunch! We ordered a variety between the five of us.. The Chicken Fried Steak was perfect! Biscuits and Gravy got 5 ⭐s! The Turkey Avocado Bacon Club was absolutely fantastic! and the Strawberry Pancakes were some of the best pancakes I've ever tasted. The portions did not disappoint!! The coffee is just right. Service was great even on a busy Sunday morning. The decor is entertaining and the atmosphere was everything a fun little cafe should be and more. Im already looking forward to breakfast next time I'm in SLO.
This is by far the best cafe around. You better come with appetite, because this place does not skip on the portions. This is the closest you will get to home-cooked meals. Food is always excellent and you can't beat the customer service. For you breakfast people I definitely recommend the biscuits and gravy.
Good food. Good service. Would love to see some smiling faces though. And the restaurant is literally across the street from our hotel. Why would maps send me in a different direction?
Food was ok. Service was a bit "sluggish" but d3cent.
Great food, kids plates were great. All prepared quickly.
The place is charming! I love the cowboy atmosphere and I bought a cowboy girl shirt while I was there. The food was delicious as well although I can’t remember what I ordered and left a good memory. The service was mediocre. There were only three people in there and the waitress took a very long time just to get to my table. The service was not the best but I realized it was close to closing time. Be aware that they are not open for dinner.
Great well done hash browns. Eggs and toast came out as ordered. Will definitely return!
So cute!!! Quaint. Very western. HUGE PORTIONS!!! Pretty darn yummy. Breakfast all day, great sweets, house made items like sausage patties and cookies!! Staff can be...lazy or brazen, but can be really cool. Sometimes they mess up, but fix it. They do close early sometimes which really sucks and have minimal open hours already so.... but been coming here and their other locations for many many years
The food was okay and once we ordered it took a while for it to come out, but it was a busy Sunday morning so I understand. The wait to get a table was surprisingly quick and the staff was super nice. We were just passing through, but I'm not sure I'd go back. I thought the hashbrowns were too oily and the omelet was just okay. Nothing special about this place. I liked the decor and the staff, my family enjoyed the meal, I'm a bit more picky.
Waitress was short handed,, but everyone chipped in to help. Food was was excellent, hot but took a while. Place was packed when we left. Congrats to the waitstaff for stepping up. Highly recommend.
The pancakes are delicious corn beef and has is good also just a little over cooked hash brown perfect and the biscuits and gravy are different not the usual white gravy it’s spicy brown colored gravy
Had the chicken fried stake. It was filling and fairly priced. Make sure to bring cash. Saves 5% on the bill.
Great spot for breakfast! Came here with my motorcycle buddies and we all loved it. The breakfast was really good, coffee was awesome, and the service was super friendly. Perfect way to kick off the morning in SLO. ☕
Came here with roommates for a traditional American breakfast. Lots of menu options for savory, sweet breakfasts and everything in between. All of us got some variation of their combo breakfast pictured below with eggs, a choice of meat and two french toasts. A cozy, themed atmosphere with kind servers. Lots of parking too.
Stopped here for brunch with my family while visiting my daughter in SLO. The food was delicious and had that "home made" feel to it. The biscuits and gravy were great, we just wished it had more sausage in it. Each plate was delicious and filling and everyone ate all their food. The service was good. Priced right for what you get. Clean and casual.
There's no waffles, so I'm already sad, and I'm pretty sure the coffee is made from ashes. However, the potato skins were pretty good. But seriously, waffles are needed at this establishment. Seriously.
Had a recommendation to give it a try for breakfast. The staff was friendly. The food was OK. Nothing spectacular. Plenty of seating. Surcharge for credit card and had some weird sign on the door about charging for drink refills (did not pay attention as I usually just drink water). Food arrived with a hair in it, but the server noticed it right away and, before setting it down, had it taken back to the kitchen, and a new plate was out in just a few minutes. Western-themed inside. Pretty quick service.
Food mostly seems to be canned stuff. The room itself is old fashion and good lookin with memories and tributes from the past. They do sit you down and give food to the table fast I admit but it all depends on if food being from scratch is a big deal for you. Netherless this is a cute spot if you are ever in the area.
Here is another weekend review as a brunch critique. I always put this place on hold before coz I didn’t get the vibe everytime I drive by. Today, finally I gave it a try. It has “The Pantry” experience if you sit in the counter. You can see the griddles sizzling. Here goes my pancake, bacon and eggs review. However, I’m quite disappointed with the following: Pancake: dry and bland. Bacon: saggy and not warm. They cook it in advance. Eggs, they are fine though a little runny gor over-medium. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 There goes my honest review.
Let's start with the good; it was nice inside, clean, servers were pleasant and the food was good. But today when I ordered a bowl of soup I called in advance to pick it up in 15-20 minutes , so they told me. Over the phone the girl, while pleasant, was unable to answer what soups they offered and made me wait on hold for minutes before she could answer me. When I arrived to pick it up they told me it wasn't ready and made me wait an extra 15 minutes. And she didn't serve me the soup in a proper bowl but rather a coffee cup. Their excuse was that they had ran out of bowls. Not only is it improper, but the cup made the soup look very small. While the soup was good, the service I personally received was slow, sloppy and unprofessional. I think I'm being very fair giving this place 3 stars despite my less than stellar experience.
The guy that we first encountered was great! Polite and got our drinks going and server to us quickly. The lady waitress was not very impressive. Kept walking by us with us having empty drinks. We finally had to get her attention. If it's busy I could understand but it wasn't busy at all. When we finally did get our drinks, she slammed them on the end of the table. The size portions of the food was good. My half order of biscuits and gravy was huge. But the biscuits seemed like they were slightly over cooked, then left out cause they were hard to chew and cut threw.
Im recovering from surgery and front door is hard to open. When I motion for help the person unhappy banged the door open but didn't help me threw it. This normally won't be a problem but Im recovering from surgery and this was supposed to be a special treat for myself. Doctor said no pulling on heavy things. I left to another restaurant one block away when they open the door for me to enter and helped me to a suitable seat. Thumbs down to the unfriendly and obvious un happy worker.
The food was not good. Breakfast burrito was dripping oil and coated my mouth with oil. The eggs were severely over cooked and the pancakes were lack luster. Service and atmosphere were good though. I don't usually leave a review but if food is that bad I feel like I have too.
Seated right away and took our order. It took over 45min. Way too long for 3 budget breakfasts and a country fried steak meal. Eggs were not overeasy they were over hard, grits were undercooked, gravy was salty. It wasn't worth the wait.
Here on vacation. I ordered eggs Benedict. Awful! Hollandaise sauce was brown and had a sour taste the hashbrowns were slightly burnt! Waitress didn't care, hardly any customers. I wonder why...never again.
Asked for a straw that was ALL I wanted and never got it also didn’t come by to refill coffee. Was not busy when we came.
