Went in for a late night meal. Sandwich was excellent. Beers were cold. Definitely worth it. Atmosphere was great.
The beer was fantastic and a great selection with well-knowledged bartenders. Sophie had some great recommendations and was also very funny. Food: -Wings were incredible, crispy skin and full of flavor -Feuerwurst was the best sausage IMO, potato salad and saurkraut were perfect -Pierogies were as great as always (I forgot to take pictures of the food cause we ate it too quickly) It was a phenomenal experience with some good friends and definitely good staff for a Sunday afternoon. Also a couple quirky patrons as well. Avalon lol
Excellent German beer selection, many choice and very knowledgeable server. The bartender for the high tables was very attentive. Carly was able to guide us to choose the right beer for our taste palette. German atmosphere is very inviting. All the food is great. Found the place from Visit Philly 11 Pretzels you have to try. Happy hours is very reasonable, need to sit at bar or high tables for the happy hour menu.
The food was the best authentic German meals you'll ever eat. The portions were big and worth it.The restaurant was very cozy and atmospheric. The servers are friendly and very good at their jobs. Definitely recommend it! I'll definitely be back.
Our first visit there, we reserved a 4 pm seating. I was able to take many pictures before other guests came to dine. The staff members were excellent! Very pleasant with all diners. The food was traditional German Fare. Loved the large Pretzel appetizer with cheese dip. The Pretzel dough had a slight flavor of Rye. I had the Rudolph Cocktail, created by the staff, and then the Gluhwein (hot mulled Cider wine with addition of apple brandy). It was very tasty, just a little too much clove for me. However, it was warm and hit the spot. The specialty of the day was a pork shank, served with a potato dumpling and sauerkraut. We also got a side of German Potato Salad. The Shank was huge and served with a nice size knife for cutting. Quite impressive, it looked like we were each being served meals from the Medieval Era. Loved it! Potato Salad was different than the one my mother in law made, but it was still excellent. This was served cold....made with Dill and visible onions. Dessert - Apple Streudel served with Vanilla Ice Cream and whipped cream. Piped music in the restaurant was good, but our suggestion would be to do a blend of traditional German music and your other selections. The music did not fit with the German authenticity of your themed decor and food. We would have loved to hear a Bavarian flare in the genre of music....to us, that would have tied up the perfect package in a Big Bow! It was an excellent experience all the way around! We will definitely go back to 718 South Street, Philadelphia!
Gary Shears makes the BEST cocktails. His espresso martini is the best I’ve ever had. Food was phenomenal!! Staff was so welcoming. Atmosphere was top notch. A MUST VISIT place on South Street.
The Laugenbrezel (German pretzel) with Obatzda (Bavarian cheese) was simply irresistible. I could munch on that daily. The spicy bratwurst was plump, juicy, and scrumptious too. Beers were a must. Friendly service and good vibes. Walked in on a Sunday night. Authentic atmosphere that reminded me of Berlin. Would return for sure! A gem of South Street.
This place is nothing short of awesome. Authentic German experience with a wide selection of beers and classic German food. This place was fantastic and accommodated the newly married couple and party! Before I go into detail on the German cuisine, I should preface this review with the fact that I've only ever been to 3 other German restaurants. Based on my in laws reaction who actually lived in Germany, the food is indeed "top notch" by their standards! The first thing ordered were the appetizers. This consisted of, kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes with apple sauce), Laugenbrezel (Bavarian pretzel with an awesome cheese sauce), and the bier-klöpse which is a top tier entree that is a definite go to, of these the options. A sausage board was also added to the appetizer list and shared amongst the table. The sausages were all good. I ordered the Jäger schnitzel with the fries (pommes) and spätzel. The sauce alone is something to be talked about! I enjoyed every bite and wish I could have had more. Definitely one of my favorite German go to restaurants! The staff was very friendly and attentive and had great suggestions for the different beers they had.
Great service, great food and what a selection of beers…the people at the bar are just fantastic, they make you feel like home, even though this was my first visit here! This must be a true German place, each beer comes in its specific type of glass (THANK YOU!), the Schnitzel is great and just being here makes you feel good! I come back, probably every weekend!
I was strolling down South St looking for a new restaurant for dinner when we passed by this cute joint. You’re welcomed by tall ceilings and arches, definitely contributing to the Barvarian atmosphere they were going for. The bar features a warm, rustic design with wooden tables and benches that encourage communal seating, which I thought was pretty reminiscent of traditional German beer gardens. The sausages were obviously the standout item, with various types such as bratwurst, knockwurst, cheese-stuffed sausage. My husband and I shared the variety plate, and all of them were SO good. The applesauce was to die for, and a great accompaniment to the meat. Fries were crunchy and good too. The egg dumplings were interesting, but I probably wouldn’t order again cause it is a little heavy. Loved the vibes, loved the food, and the 24 beers on tap just blew me away. If you love beer, especially German beer, this is the place for you.
I randomly stumbled upon this place and am so glad I have it a shot. I enjoyed it so much I came back a second time. I would have gone back a third time but I wasn't staying in Philly long enough. Each time I went I struck up conversations with multiple people while sitting at the bar. The bartenders Devon and Morgan both helped me select beers for a flight. Devon is a really good dude and Philly is a better place bc he lives there.
Wow. This was a fantastic place. The food is hands down amazing, and I am still thinking about the mushroom sauce on the Jaegerschnitzel and Pomes. The atmosphere was chill, everyone was really nice, and the service was great. Legit German food and beer, with nice people. What else could you want?
Frikadellen and Jagerschnitzel were flavorful and delicious. Attentive service and a great atmosphere to boot. Thank you!!
This is one of the nicest bar/restaurant in Philadelphia. The selection is incredible and the service was excellent. Its like travelling to Germany. If you can't find something you like here, you probably shouldn't leave your house in the first place.
Met up with some friends here and the food was amazing! The sausages were some of the best I have had and the schnitzl was perfect! The server was so kind and patient as the rest of our party was late. The vibe was laid back and fun and would go back in a minute. Great place for German food and a beer.
Simply the best German Restaurant on the East Coast great beer selection and an always evolving menu. Ownership truly enjoys bringing Germany to Philadelphia. And don't miss any Event that Brauhaus throws it's always a Gut time!
AWESOME restaurant!!! 🔥💖🔥 Lived in Germany for 4 years ... miss it since 1984. This place was a travel back in time for me. The place is very nice, they have a huuuuge variety of German beers, the food is simply heaven and the staff is extraordinary... especially our bartender Tara ☺️ ... outstanding service, great smile, friendly, great menu recommendations... Top notch. Thank you for the super fun time and the great food and beers👌☺️
It was packed! We foolishly/fortunately arrived just before Germany played Denmark in the Euro Cup. Donner kebab was excellent. Get the spicy sauce. Really great beer. My hat is off to the staff who were working like madmen to keep up with the crowd.
Great food and service. I had no idea what i was ordering and the waitress was very kind and patient at explaining my options. The portions are a nice size and the food itself is very good!
This was a good find. We love German food and this hit the spot. Food and service was excellent. Probably could get in without reservations on off-peak times, but I’d make one just to be safe.
The sauerkraut is EPIC! The pork knuckle is EPIC! The Hefeweisen is EPOC! The place is epic! No idea how much I'm gonna pay but I don't care. It's that good! Food and beer was so good I travelled back to Germany and enjoyed again the memories from my last trip there.
The day after Christmas, I came to taste German pork knuckle and ordered a light beer. It felt as if I had traveled through time and space to Munich. 12/26/2025
We’ve been here four times now and it never disappoints! Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient! Best beer selection in the city. Highly recommend the flights for a flavor expedition. Pork shank feeds two and falls apart. Watch some college football on a Saturday afternoon in their back room.
Wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, and amazing service. Our server was so polite and checked on our table several times. In my opinion, all the food was just a tad bit too salty, but everything was otherwise delicious. I got the Trout Sandwich, and though the smell was very strong it tasted good. The cucumber salad was delicious and overall I had an amazing experience.
Great German restaurant and local hangout with a very nice atmosphere and good service. Extensive German and microbrew Bear list with excellent sizeable portioned hearty German food located in the heart of Philadelphia.
Coming from Texas, where German cafes aren’t as common, I enjoyed the atmosphere and food here. The pretzels were particularly delicious.
Came here to celebrate Oktoberfest. I don't even like beer, but the "beer wizard" did a fantastic job picking one for me. Loved it! Definitely will be keeping it in mind for future visits.
If you enjoy a German Oktoberfest style venue this is a really cool spot from the front room all the way to the very back. There are neat little details that make you feel like you’re in another place. I didn’t eat any food except for a pretzel, but the beer selection Was exceptional with all imported German, or in that region beers.
Excellent food. Spatzle was on point. Beef rouladen was excellent. I've had that at 5 other places and this one was the best. Still, it cant beat black forest inn, stanhope nj (but thats the best restauranton the east coast), but its a close second. It more of a beer hall feel. The decor was very cool, they had a few very very good appetizers on the menu. Overall I will definitely be visiting this place again, we'll worth it. Also, its fairly inexpensive compared to other restaurants. Everyone i was with gave it 5 stars, so do yourself a favor and try this place out
This was my first visit to Brauhaus Schmitz. We had a great time. The food was delicious. The service was good. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The schnitzel was great. The Doner kebab was very tasty. The pretzel bun on the schnitzel sandwich was a great touch. The apple strudel was great as well. The selection of beers is pretty solid. We definitely had a great experience and will have to return.
Fun place to celebrate. We were there celebrating my mother-in-laws 83rd birthday. The beer selections was awesome, the food was good, the atmosphere was fun, and the service was great. The Schweinshaxe could have been crispier, but everything tasted great.
This was my second time at Brauhaus Schmitz and I finally got to try the Schweinshaxe, which was absolutely delicious. We also had Jägerschnitzel, Kartoffelpuffer and an amazing Gulaschsuppe which tasted like back home (they could have made this a main dish instead of an appetizer). One thing I have never seen in germany before was the Sauerkraut Kroketten, I was Skeptical at first (was der bauer nicht kennt das frisst er nicht), but I was positively surprised and definitely will order them again. The only thing that didn't feel authentic was the Döner, it tasted more like Sucuk (turkish sausage) than the regular Döner meat. It was still good regardless. We also reserved a table but it wasn't necessary. Sadly I forgot to take pictures, but the Schweinshaxe was big enough that it can be shared with 2 people.
Excellent place. Wonderful for food, drinks, and even hosting events. Two relevant anecdotes: Brought a German colleague here and the food and drink got their stamp of approval - especially the pork crackling! We had an after party for an event here with around 40 guests. Great atmosphere for that and staff handled service, the bar tab, and food efficiently. Highly recommend!
Never disappoints. The food is authentic and amazing, beer selection is top notch, and servers are knowledgeable and genuinely excited to share the eating experience with you.
Great German food! We ordered the plate for 4, had another meal the next day. Contained 6 sausages, smoked pork chop and shank. Meat fell off the bone, so tender. Sides were red cabbage, German potato salad and Sauerkraut. Grandson scooped up the sides quickly. Everything was wonderful. Brown and white bread with flavored butter served.
Having returned from living in Germany recently, we have to say this is the best selection of Bier from the fass around. Food is very good as well, and the staff we've interacted with so far have been super kind and attentive. A++
Large German brew house, I finally got to scratch that itch. They were the end of my bookstore buying spree, and I was weighed down by several paperbacks. I parked it at the bar and was tempted to buy a boot of something but kept it breezy. I got a couple of .5L of the pillsner and the lager. The pils was light and refreshing after a hot afternoon walking around. The lager was surprisingly malty, almost brown ale like. A little heavier than I was looking for still really good. The last German spot served me cinnamon churros instead of a real pretzel. And while not traditional, the krabbenbretzel hit the spot. I thought it was going to come with a crab fondue type sauce, but it was large chucks of crab and cheese baked on top. Unexpectedly good, and filling. There were a few others at the bar drinking and eating plus several tables in the bar service area. The bartender was still prompt and attentive given they were the only server at the time. At some point I'll actually order some actual food instead of a pretzel and their menu is a good candidate. Lots of traditional German delicacies, plus a few modern mashups.
I enjoy visiting German restaurants as that is where my ancestry comes from. I have visited Germany a few times and love the dish Sauerbraten. I tried the Sauerbraten here and it was okay. The beef was a little tough. I was used to it falling apart using my fork. I had high expectations. The beer selection was great and I tried quite a few. Great German beers. I would stop in again and try some other dishes.
Excellent beer, great service! Pretzel is fantastic, the roasted half chicken is VERY good. The potato pancakes are very bland, however. Needs to be elevated with chive, more sour cream.
Schnitzel was good. Batter could have been seasoned better. I wished instead of fries they would have spatzle instead. The potato pancakes were very good. My wife had the sauerbraten and said it was good. Server was excellent. Be forewarned they add 18% gratuity.
To be honest I have not been in Germany. My husband he’s from Czech and wanted to have European food for our dinner after we got out from art museum. We’ve been in German restaurant near where we live so I know a bit of their dish. The only thing I like is red cabbage and spaetzle for sure ooh also potato pancakes when he cooked at home. So anyway back to this place, the potato pancakes we got for us didn’t have enough flavor kinda bland and if I knew and realize in the first place that they’ll have applesauce on top of it I would ask waiter please put in on the side instead but it was our fault didn’t read well the menu. We got Max as our waiter and he’s nice and helpful because we had to customize a bit our order as we like and he made it happen 👍🏻 My halbes hahnchen not sure if the sauce or the chicken but was “wow” extremely salty! I mean OMG I asked to my husband is this really German food if one day we will ever go there? Because now I’m afraid to go..I’m kidding I will still go and I’m sure I can eat something else. And my son had authentic German sausages.. and he only eat the 2 sausages, he don’t like the sides that came with it. My husband had schnitzel chicken and he ate the whole thing and of course he also had some Ayinger Octoberfest. The place was packed tho and I really love the atmosphere.
Solid German beer and gnosh. Bar staff is attentive and kind. Pretzel hits and my half chicken was both very decent size and cooked nicely. Tap selection is expansive(ly German). Nice they have some TVs for sports but they are placed at a truly neck-straining height for 1st floor viewers.
First try of German dish: ordered their crispy pork flank and two glass of beer (number 3 and number 27). The first beer was definitely on a lighter tone, while 27 had a stronger taste. The pork shank took a bit long time to come out, but it was definitely worth the wait! The exterior of the shank was crispy while the inside is perfectly cooked. The only reason I took away one star is because it was a little too salty for me personally, but my father had no problem haha. Highly recommended if you wanna try something different!
Very authentic German meat selection. I went with a German and this is one of the better German restaurants they’ve been to in the states (in terms of the meat selection - the wines and pretzels, not so much). Huge portions, great beer and mixed drink variety, though not much wine selection. The SchweineHaxe was amazing - everyone loved it. Avoid the pretzels and chicken wings. Definitely coming back once I’ve done 5000 pushups to clear out the arteries.
Always wanted to try wienerschnitzel, so this was my first time and I got this schnitzel sandwich. I found the sandwich to be tasty but the meat was dried out. I got a Caesar salad as side which was good
Went there on Saturday evening for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious and our server was very friendly. My only complaint is that it was a bit loud in there and difficult to have a conversation but otherwise overall a great experience.
My appetizer was my meal - fabulous pierogis with peppers and onions! Hubby's meal was just OK, salty and meat somewhat tough. Will give this location another try.
If you like German beer and beer hall atmosphere, this is the place. However, we were mightily disappointed with the food. We enjoyed the Schweinshaxe with the flambe option, made the skin crackled, the warm pretzel with brown mustard. The potato pancakes with apple sauce, and the bratwurst, not so much. The biggest disappointment was the wurst, they were so dried, they tasted very similar to some "slim jim". The accompanied red sauerkraut was so "vinegarly", borderline to bitter. I do not recall having wurst and kraut like this in Germany. We like the atmosphere, and the beer selection. Will come back some time in the future, but this is not a place that we would go to often. Service was great. Our waiter did a fine job serving us. 18 percent tip was added to our bill, very "un-germanly", you might say. Tips indicate something extra, dispensed by customers for good service and done so voluntarily. If restaurant put it on the bill without customer's consent, it should put down as "service".
Food was good. We each had a schnitzel and - although it isn’t the same as in Austria, Hungary, Germany,… - it was pretty good and satisfied my cravings. The potato salad was amazing and the house salad was very nice and fresh (I really enjoyed it). They also have a good beer selection. The reason for the 3 star review is because it took about 5 minutes for us to get seated (the restaurant was less than half full) and we didn’t have a server for about 20 minutes. Two of the waitresses (one with pink hair and the other wearing glasses) were chatting less than 10 meters away from our table (nobody seated between them and us) and after a while a third waitress comes to us, apologises and says she thought her colleague (who was chatting) was serving us. We never received a water refill and there were problems with getting the wrong order too. I would go back there a lot more often since I do miss schnitzel if it wasn’t for the poor service.
I was looking forward to trying this restaurant but was really disappointed by their service. The waiter spilled half of the plate of fries when he was serving and just left the mess on the table. He did not offer to clean it up and I had to ask him for help. Afterwards, I asked if he could bring us more fries since he spilled it. He ended up charging us for that side of fries even though it was supposed to be a replacement for what he spilled it. I tried to get their attention to get the bill adjusted but eventually had to just give up since I couldn’t get their attention for 10+ minutes. This was really disappointing consider the price of the food is not cheap.
