After living near this place for 9yrs, I placed my order 15min before closing. I had the fish with zucchini and shrimp. I was truly pleased with everything. It was cooked perfectly and had a very clean taste and not oily. I will defineitly order from this establishment again.

I hadn’t heard of Tugboat until just this week reading an online story about the restaurant. It’s downright difficult to find a Fish & Chips eatery in the area. Living 25 minutes from their Pleasant Hill location is an issue but I decided to give it a go. I’ll definitely be back. The menu is extensive including the likes of prawns, catfish, oysters, calamari, even lumpia. I came for the fish and stayed for the tempura style prawns combo special. At $15.99 you’ll get a generous piece of fish, four prawns and a basket of fries. I read in an earlier review the fish wasn’t cod, and I really don’t know if it was but it was tasty with a golden brown deep fried crust. The tempura prawns were meaty and prepared perfectly. While you order at the counter, the food was delivered to my table along with tartar and cocktail sauce, and ketchup. The necessary malt vinegar was already at the table. The fork was plastic but I didn’t use one. It’s a casual place and I dined alone—finger food fish n fries if you will. The restaurant is bright, airy and sunny with a very definite nautical theme from the wallpaper to paintings and accessories/ornaments. There was no trash disposal in sight to enable an easy self bussing of the table, the soda machine was out of order (what no free refills😳) but their cold box of soda, teas etc. was ice cold so all good. The location is in a small retail center (Ellingwood) two doors down from an Outback Steakhouse so there’s plenty of parking. I’ve read where some think it’s pricey, but fish is expensive so I was satisfied with my bill. As mentioned previously, I’ll definitely be back, and if you like fish and chips, I’d highly recommend giving it a try.

Food is freshly prepared. Very large fish portions. We have gotten two piece portions and have ended up saving one piece for the next night. Fish is very fresh. We have gotten the food to go a few times over recent months.

Absolutley a treasure of place to eat. Love the food. And the service was wonderful. Our family fried a little of everything and it all was great. My 9 year old thought he could eat 3 peice fish with fries. He is excited to have leftovers to eat later

The food is amazing. I live pretty far but when I’m around town I know where to do. The fish is fresh and the portions are great. The store is owned by a lovely couple. They are very sweet and friendly.

They have the best fresh fish, shrimp, scallops, calamari with chips, and yummy clam chowder with tons of clams! Cocktail and Tartar sauce were excellent for fried fish, too. They have friendly and caring staff that come around and check in with you.

Fresh potatoes would be nice, but the chips were serviceable filler. The menu has a few unique non-seafood items in case you have a friend/partner/kid in tow that doesn't do seafood. Update: Been back a few times, fries have been upgraded from the crinkle cut in the pic and are much better now, ask for them crispy. Fried zucchini is good, mozzarella sticks are good, hush puppies are very good, though expensive.

Huge thick pieces of fish are so moist and tasty. The prawns re also good sized. Perfect amount of fries. I hate shops that heap on the fries to cover sub par quality fish. Decor is a bit dated but clean.

Stopped in this evening for something to eat and found this little spot tucked away in a corner of a quaint buissness center. Ended up ordering the 3 pc. Fish n chips and a side of clam strips. I walked away full and a very happy guy. I’ll definitely be back at some point and try other menu items. Don’t take my word for anything, go check it out for yourself.

After reading the negative reviews, I took a chance and tried the food here. Yes, it is fried! Exactly what I wanted! The dish is Cod. Delicious and moist. Crisp crust, fish was thick enough, and crust was thin enough. The shrimp were very good. The calamari was satisfying. The fries were decent. The tartar sauce was amazing as was the cocktail sauce. This place is GREAT for fried food! I only wish they had a cornmeal based coating. That's why I gave only 4 stars. Everything I ate was 5 stars though.

The only reason I gave it 4 Stars, is because the onion rings were too crunchy and kind of thin. We had the 8 shrimp and the vegetable mix. They were delightful.

Excellent food!! Referred here by longterm patron. Johnny actually works the counter, cool! One must take extra care in ordering. My first visit resulted in a confusion; the 'resolution' resulted in: a) lengthy wait for correction to be cooked causing me to completely miss out on my lunch; eating at nine as my dinner b) charged full price for BOTH meals when error wasn't fully my weight to bear. Second visit resulted in aforementioned longterm patron was insulted when Mrs Johnny didn't imply but flat out called him a liar! He walked outside to verify a substitution (Diabetic & avoid french fries, even if surcharges apply) directly with Johnny. He returned stating Johnny approved substitution; she HAD to go speak with Johnny directly, not believing customer. This whole scenario resulted in refunds for three meals, $60+ for LUNCHES. Both believed his storming out was about fee for substitution NOT receiving info about insult and consumer loyalty Truly unfortunate as the food and menu range are phenomenal!!

I tried this place. Food was ok...got fried zucchini. It was not bad...the fried shrimp was ok. I wanted to try fried mushrooms. I will try this place again. It took a long time to get the to-go order....place needs alittle face lift...

Loved this place when I discovered it about 8+ yrs ago. I had moved out of the area but for my bday this year I wanted fish n chips so I traveled a distance back to Tugboat. Sadly I was very disappointed. The prices had actually doubled! For our meal of 2x 2piece fish meal (w/ a few fries) side of 6 prawn and 3 tiny scallops with 2 cans of soda came to over $50!! Plus, when I had asked for more tarter, was told there is a charge. I will say the gentleman working there was pleasant and the food came to table fairly quick. But overall for that price... food needed a bit of seasoning. I can say certainty I will not be returning. 🫤

Not sure what I expected. If you are looking for fried food then this may be your spot. The food was all fried. They brought out several refillable bottles of sauces and the like. In total, I had the fish and calamari, chips (fries) and zucchini. Without much surprise they all tasted "fried". I put 2 stars here as I try to find the upside. The upside here was the calamari. It did have enough meat to taste past the fried. Good luck!!

Food was not seasoned and everything has the same battered. The staff was very friendly. Food just unflavored for $50.00

Ordered for dinner and was very disappointed. I usually don't post reviews but It was like 50$ and it was so bad that my family even complained and they will eat everything. The biggest issue was that the batter was so thick thats all u ate. Barely any fish. it wasn't crunchy it was soft with like a very heavy breading. Also nothing had taste even the fish itself was bland. The mushrooms were cooked in the same batter which made them unpleasant as well. The hushpuppies were also very bland. I have nothing nice to say sadly. The pictures on here look nothing like what I got. Is it new owners? Why did mine look so different? Zero crisp at all it was just like dough. Unless they completely change how they cook everything will never go back.

If I could give this place NEGATIVE STARS stars I would you can smell the place on your clothes from just walking in the parking lot (outback steakhouse in the same lot apologizes that they can't do anything about it), going inside you are overwhelmed by a fog of grease and it covers everything. Last time I was here it took 3 WASHINGS FOR IT TO COME OUT OF MY CLOTHES. There is so much grease or oil over everything that I would not be surprised if this place was red tagged as a FIRE HAZARD. Everything looks dirty or broken. All food tastes a like what it is with the added taste of SPOILED FISH Charged for sauces and drink refills.

This place has a terrible smell and the benches moved. The food had no seasoning whatsoever. It was very bland and the waiter sounded very passive aggressive. I don't think the food was very fresh either. The food costed 22 dollars for one fish that was very small and the rest was fries. The smell of fryer grease was overwhelming. The stench burned our eyes and permeated everything in the dining area. Once returning home, we immediately bathed and laundered our clothes to rid ourselves of the smell. We will never go back.

The husband & son are realy nice but the wife seems super bitter all the time, today she refused to serve us because he had a soda, they can do that its fine but 1 never have before & 2 just the bitter nastyness of the owners wife because he is handicapped, no reasonable accomodation, nothing. I did not argue just politely informer her they lost my business!! And left without ordering. It's a shame because they already look like they are on the cusp of going under, and cant afford to alienate good customers. Good luck!

I was 55 dollars for 4 pieces of fish and 6 oysters. Plus 3% charge for paying with a card. If the food wasn't for my sick mother's craving I would've walked away. Later mother complained the fish was fried hard which made the meat dry the fries were just as bad. Elderly Asian couple who spoke horribly broken English. I would Definitely not recommend for fish and chips there

Apparently the young man working with his air pods in decided to close early and just as I was opening the door he decided to close early Now it'd be one thing for a small shop to simply ask that a patron comes back another day and they need to close up early tonight, but another for the door to be locked early on them. I give up on this place unfortunately since it is a short walk from home, ill continue going to fisherman's warfare up the road
