The Great Outdoors absolutely knocked it out of the park! From the moment I got my food, I could tell everything was fresh, made with care, and put together the right way. This wasn’t some slapped-together meal — it was one of those lunches that reminds you how good simple food can be when it’s done right. I ordered a turkey sandwich and it was loaded with meat, super flavorful, and had that perfect balance where every bite tastes just as good as the first. The bread was soft and fresh, the turkey was tender and seasoned perfectly, and everything tasted clean and high quality. You can tell they don’t cut corners with ingredients. On top of that, the side options were spot on. The chips were a perfect grab-and-go pairing, and the cookie was the cherry on top — soft, sweet, and exactly what you want after a great sandwich. It felt like a complete meal, not just something quick to hold you over. What really stood out to me though was the overall experience. The service was friendly, the order was accurate, and everything was packaged neatly. It’s the kind of place that makes it easy to come back again and again — whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go, meeting up with someone, or just wanting something that actually tastes satisfying. If you’re on the fence, don’t be. The Great Outdoors is a must-try and I’ll 100% be back. Highly recommend!

I have been a customer here for years. The service is always fantastic but today they surprised me. I grabbed a sandwich through the drive through that I requested bacon on. I received my sandwich and begun to drive away. An employee, Auvianna, came running out of the store to stop me because she had forgotten to put the bacon on my sandwich and she wanted to fix it. I had not even checked the sandwich yet. This type of service is unheard of these days. This place is awesome.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Great Outdoor Sub Shop is such a cool and unique spot! I decided to visit after seeing that they won Best of Richardson—and it absolutely did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the variety on their menu — they offer so many different and creative sandwich options that you don’t usually see at other sub shops. One thing that really stood out to me was their Eat Out Healthy menu, which actually lists the fat and carb counts, and even Weight Watcher points. It’s a thoughtful touch that shows they care about giving people healthier choices while still enjoying a great sandwich. The shop itself has a lot of character and charm. I loved seeing the sign about the “Great Outdoor History,” noting that the very first handmade sign came from their original downtown Dallas location back in 1973. Details like that make the place feel authentic and rooted in tradition. For my meal, I went with The Invention — hickory smoked ham, provolone cheese, cream cheese, and fresh mushrooms, heated on country wheat bread. It was absolutely delicious! No surprise that Esquire Magazine voted it the Best Sandwich in America in 2008. The flavors balanced perfectly, and the cream cheese gave it a unique twist that made it stand out from any other sub I’ve had. Overall, this spot puts a fresh and original spin on the classic sandwich shop. With its award-winning reputation, great food, cool vibe, and sense of history, it’s definitely worth checking out!

I’ve been coming to The Great Outdoors Sub Shop in Richardson for over 40 years, ever since my college days, and I was so glad to see that the tradition of excellence is still alive and well. The food remains just as impeccable as I remember, and the staff continues to deliver the kind of customer service that made me fall in love with this place decades ago. On my most recent visit, I was greeted by Auvianna W., who was warm, welcoming, and ready to serve. She reminded me of a manager they had years ago, Rick, who always made sure long nights of studying or quick breaks between classes were made better with great service and my favorite sandwich (always with extra mayo, light thousand, and a strip of mustard!). I also want to recognize Tina and Liam, who were attentive and enthusiastic as they shared the new menu items with me. Their excitement was contagious and made the visit even more enjoyable. It’s rare to see a restaurant carry on such a strong legacy for decades, but The Great Outdoors in Richardson truly has. For me, it’s more than just a sub shop — it’s a place filled with memories, tradition, and consistently great food.

I LOVE this place! Tried the salad this time and my other party had a #1 and liked it (very particular woman!) They were understaffed by 2 on this visit and the wait was longer than normal. Their service was still really good! Order was accurate (even though they had soooo many to complete) and they still managed to treat us all with appreciation for the delay and for us staying in the long slow line. This is not the normal so I'll say this, because of their continued great food & service- they were worth the wait. It reminds of a place back home so I am a customer for life more than likely!

I've enjoyed The Great Outdoors since the early 80's. My favorite is their hot #12 (the outdoorsman) on white, with the works and Italian pepper salad. Pretty good blueberry shake as well! This is a new location, replacing the one a little west on Campbell, but every bit as good.
