El Jarro de Arturo is a popular San Antonio spot known for its fresh Mexican food and attentive service, especially from waiters like Ruben. Many rave about the chips and salsa, margaritas, and catering services, though some find it pricey or experience inconsistent food quality.

Tip: Portions are large, so come with a big appetite or be prepared to take some home. The salsa and Maria's Tortillas are highly recommended.

My favorite place in San Antonio! Strong ritas and delicious food. 5 star
Great food, service and atmosphere. Really good house margaritas, salsa wasn't overly salty nor were the delicious hard crispy chips. Highly recommend.
Everything is great. Looking forward to going again soon. Portion sizes are large so go with a large appetite or b we prepared to take 1/2 home with you . I was able to reheat my salmon dinner and still delicious 2 days later.
Excellent location for 18 family members after a funeral. Service was excellent and stayed on top of our needs. Enjoyed a chili rellenos, wife had a puffy chicken taco. Also good was the guacamole, questions, and salsa. Chip bowls stayed full throughout.
Rarely do I leave reviews being of a daughter of someone that is pretty much a food critic El Jarro is literally the best Mexican food in San Antonio not only does the food bring me back for over 20 years now Ruben one of the waiters that has also been servicing us for year is the Best waiter in San Antonio actually best I have ever had in my life to be honest he is the reason why I keep coming back every year now living in a different state now The service he gives is impeccable remembering items I don’t even remember from years ago polite friendly attentive and just a all around amazing man he is top tier in the restaurant business always a pleasure to see him!
We recently used El Jarro de Arturo Catering for our parents’ anniversary 🎉 and they made it unforgettable! From the start, Sandy the Catering Manager, was amazing to work with 🙌 – patient, helpful and full of great recommendations. You can’t go wrong with the beef and chicken fajitas along with the cheese enchiladas. Add rice, beans and delish guacamole 🥑 plus the margarita bar and you’re all set! 🎊 Oh, and did I mention they pass out mini-gorditas as appetizers? On the big day, Laura, Veronica and Jorge handled everything with such care 🍽️🍹, letting us relax and enjoy time with family ❤️. Incredible food, outstanding service and a truly memorable experience ✨. Highly recommend! 🌟
The food was great and the server was also very attentive and prompt. The only issue was with the hostess. We requested an additional chair for our large party and she made a face that was so OBVIOUSLY annoyed that I had to bite my tongue to not say anything... if it wouldn't have affected so many people, I would have just left... but no, I looked past it, and I'm so glad the food and service was great. That lady needs some hospitality training.. because without customers, she would be out of a job.
The food: GOOD AND FRESH! Started off with some of the best Chips and Salsa I’ve had in a long time! The enchiladas may not have been the best I’ve ever had but they were still enjoyable! The level of service: EXCELLENT! This place has a great, hard working waitstaff that is very attentive! The atmosphere: It’s a bit more upscale than most places but still very welcoming. If you have ever wanted to enjoy a ‘Tex-Mex Candlelight Dinner’ you will get it here! I look forward to returning and trying some different items on their menu.
We went here for dinner tonight as a family. Overall, the place seemed to have an upscale approach. We ordered the super nachos as an appetizer, two Treviño, margaritas, the carne guisada dinner, the shrimp enchilada suizas, a quesadilla and the bananas foster for dessert. Absolutely everything was delicious!! Also, the shrimp enchiladas were hands down the best suizas I have ever had! The salsas were very flavorful. I loved how the restaurant had the tortillas being made fresh on display in the middle of the restaurant. My only critique is that they do not have much of a margarita / Mexican drink option. We’ll definitely be coming back here.
This San Antonio gem remains a top pick for us. Even amid the bustling crowd during dinner, the speed of the food delivery held up admirably. The atmosphere exudes warmth, and the menu is a delight with its abundant choices. Brace yourself for sizable portions – perfect for sharing a hearty meal. A go-to spot that consistently satisfies both the palate and the craving for a welcoming dining experience.
Great service. Great food and great atmosphere. You can easily tell why this restaurant is so popular. The service is spot on. Chips and salsa arrive at your table the moment you sit down. And if you are drinking - which I would recommend - their margaritas are wonderful. The food is delicious and come in large portions and while the restaurant is usually crowded - having a conversation is no problem. All in all if you are looking for an excellent Mexican restaurant - you should try el Jarro - I think you will be pleased.
The food is amazing here. I had a MR tuna with fried spinach, mashed pots and a delicious Patron margarita. The grilled jalapeños were so good, the guac was perfect, but the service could've been a lot better.
Food is really good , their pasta Cruda , Cilantro Pesto with grilled shrimp , just delicious ! Their Spinach Enchiladas should be served with a cream based sauce so the tortilla doesn't get sogy, one suggestion wish there were more vegetarian options ,Top shelf Margaritas are superb, homemade chips tasty , our server is the best , overall really good and will keep coming back !
It took our server 18 minutes to take our order and half an hour to bring our chips. It wasn't that full. Fajitas were good, but the taco meat was a little salty and expensive. Three tacos for $12.99. No guacamole or sour cream. Lemonade was good, Sangria was good but small for $15.00.
Was my first time dining here. Restaurant was a bit more upscale for a Mexican restaurant, but food was average. Salsa was one of the items that stood out, as were the tortillas, both were fresh made. I ordered the El Jarro plate which had 1 cheese enchilada, chili sauce, rice, beans, a crispy beef taco and guacamole salad. I figured Id try a variety of items since it was my first visit. The enchilada was decent but not overly flavorful. I like my enchiladas baked with the cheese nearly liquified, and the chili more like a gravy. They weren't bad, but I eat a lot of Mexican food all over San Antonio, and have found some favorites for enchiladas. The crispy taco was pretty good, nothing special but had good flavor. Rice and beans were average. Not sure if I would dine here again. Prices were average for a more upscale Mexican restaurant, but not overly expensive. I just didnt have anything impressive that would bring me back.
There were plenty of servers, but service was slow. It took 20 mins to get water, and over an hour to get food. The place was dusty. Look at the hanging lamps and indoor gazebo roof. One of our forks was dirty with lipstick. Food was decent. Chicken mole was good marinated shredded chicken, Carne asada was tender, and tomatillo sauce for green enchiladas was fantastic. Guac was not fresh. For the price, there are far better places to go to in town.
The margaritas are good and strong . That said, the chips and salsa were stale and the queso flavorless. The chicken fajitas were bland and water was added just before serving to create the sizzle but didn't help the flavor. There were no vegetables with the chicken other than onions and a few peppers.
Our small group arrived at 11am. . We sat down on a bench just across the host podium(no host). It took a long time for us to be greeted. Hardly anyone was in the restaurant. Two couples came in while we were sitting waiting and they were seated before us. We had to get their attention. We were seated at table and menus were brought over. I asked about their empanadas that were listed under appetizers, and what they were made of. Waiter made it sound yummy! I told the waiter I would have that as my meal. Well, when the plate arrived I thought it was some kind of joke. The so-called empanadas were super tiny and not even worthy to be called an empanada. I have had empanadas at several restaurants and never have I seen like what was served to me. They were ALMOST an inch long, six on the plate, I didn't see the shredded chicken as it was described by waiter, and so Way over-priced. The dipping sauce had zero flavor. The flautas that my friend ordered looked very dark (burnt). Seriously, how can you bring that out to the table and be proud of what you just served. I will not be eating here again and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone I know. Small portions and overpriced. I wish I had taken a picture.
Cheese enchilada plate was very salty. One beef fajita was $9 and the meat was mushy. The chili con queso had a sour after taste and the chips where old and hard. The tortillas while being served warm were also old and hard. The tables edge was peeling while the other three sides the veneer had been completely peeled off. Definitely skip this place, it caters exclusively to certain cotton haired class of folks. Service was excellent.
I was in the mood for Cabrito and my favorite Gen AI website recommended this restaurant. Walked in around 1 PM and sat down to eat. Place was not too busy. Waiters were milling about. I had to flag one of them down to place an order. I ordered a Michelada and their Cabrito. Two minutes later to Michelada arrived and my guess is whoever made the Michelada had no idea what a Michelada is. But ignorance is not a sin. 10 minutes later, I flagged the same waiter who was just chatting with his buddy wondering where my salsa and chips were. He apologized and went and got them. Came back a few minutes later to ask me what kind of tortillas I wanted. I asked for corn. The food arrived a few minutes later. The Cabrito was good taste wise. Lots of bones, but that was to be expected. I was served literally two corn tortillas. I tried to flag the waiter again to order more tortillas, but he was nowhere to be found. Finished eating tried to flag the waiter so I can pay my bill and finally was able to leave. 20 minutes spent eating and 30 minutes spent waiting for Service. Taste wise the Cabrito was OK. But I will not be frequenting this establishment ever again.
In a non rush time we ordered simple food. Beef enchiladas and cheese enchiladas. Tortilla soup and a salad. The food took almost 30 minutes. When it arrived the beans were crusted over and the rice was crunchy. It had been sitting for a while. When we got the food back it was the same food microwaved. The manager said sorry because they were understaffed. Then he went on to say he knows his business as he’s been in for 40 years. Let’s be honest, there is a Mexican restaurant on every corner in San Antonio. Do better sir or leave the business and let someone else that understands what people want is fresh food take over. I don’t write bad reviews but the manager pushed me with his combative attitude. My advise is eat anywhere else.
I took my family that was visiting from out of town out to dinner and was horribly disappointed. Started off being seated at a 5 top that was in a major thoroughfare. Every server and busboy who went by knocked into my aunt’s chair and/or her purse. After an hour passed since ordering, we asked for the status of our food. We were told the kitchen was paused while they handled to go orders. We questioned why they stopped the orders of people in the restaurant to focus on to go orders. We complained to the owners - both of them and neither said I’m sorry or acknowledged the inconvenience of sitting in a restaurant waiting for our food when to go orders were prioritized. In fact, the female owner said that we “should understand that they have to prioritize to go orders” and that she “hoped we enjoy the food.” The server did the best he could and brought us some sopapillas as a peace offering. Apparently this is their standard practice and they offered no sympathy for making us wait for an hour for our food. We will not be going back nor will I be taking any visitors.
