Momoku No Usagi in San Clemente is one of those places you can’t wait to tell friends about. The sushi is fresh, beautiful, and seriously delicious, the cocktails are well crafted and addictive, and the team makes you feel instantly welcome. Its cozy “speakeasushi” vibe makes it perfect for casual nights or special celebrations.
This place has become a favorite bar/restaurant in Orange County. Surprisingly amazing fish quality in the sushi! Only serve handrolls but they are all amazing. I do go hungry and fill up on them. The drinks are also some of the best I’ve had in Orange County. « Kick Out The Jams » is now my favorite cocktail of all time. The staff and owner take a lot of pride in their drinks and you can taste the quality. Highly recommend this place!
4.5 actually. Cool decor. Great concept--a speakeasy sushi bar (actually upstairs from a Goonies inspired speakeasy). Friendly staff. Very nice cocktails. And quite good food, but I wish there were larger portions offered (my only complaint). Definitely worth a visit or revisit.
We tried Momoku couple weeks ago, and I am still drooling for the wagyu nigiri. We got lucky they had few slices left for us to order as we were told they sell out fast! Hoping to go back for more soon!
Love the decor! They only have temakis (hand rolls) for food but they are top notch. I heard the server say to another table that it's typical for 1 person to order 4 to 5 temakis to equal a "full meal". My husband and I were on a mission to try multiple restaurants so we only got 2 each, but I'd have to say I agree - 4-5 temakis would have filled me up! We got the maguro, hamachi, unagi & spicy masu. All were fantastic. The wasabi was so good! We also got a couple cocktails here that were great. Would make a great date night.
Although the portions are truly small, the quality and taste were incredible for sure. Loved the vibe and the service as well. Overall would recommend but would definitely let people know the hand made rolls are less rolls and more like a single small serving. Other than that a fantastic experience!
This is one of the best sushi spots and craft cocktail pairings in Southern California. Customer service, atmosphere and vibe is everything. The sushi is fresh, distributed from Japan weekly. Love my experience every time I go. Reservation only as well. Sushi Chef is from Tokyo as well. Highly recommended coming here.
The Uni shots are exceptional …🤩 I recommend at least two!! The cocktails are also delicious and the beer tastes amazing as well. The Itamae is an artist of the highest degree and everything is prepared with beauty, wisdom, and quality.
Put your name down at Sonny's. Go to this place next door. Amazing sushi (the style and taste is 👌)and drinks upstairs. Goonies themed rum bar downstairs. Best day ever.
Good drinks and cool decor. Definitely want to come back and try some more drinks, and the bar downstairs. The ambience is awesome.
We made a reservation in a whim with no expectations for anything besides doing something new, but by the end of our visit we were insatiable and totally delighted. The four of us in our party are all foodies who were equally impressed with the food and cocktails. We planned to order two rolls between us at the table, but we were so impressed by the crispiness of the nori and the delicate balance of the sauces lightly flavoring the wildly fresh fish that we each ordered several more. Spoiler alert, we would have ordered more if we had been able to stay longer. We all liked the "kanpachi" the best, because it was just particularly beautiful, but I'd eat anything on that menu any time, no doubt. We all tried different cocktails, which were equally special. Honestly, you could blindly point to menu items and feel thrilled with whatever came to your table. I've worked in the service industry my whole adult life, and I had zero complaints. Our waiter was confident and quiet, but charming. I will absolutely be back.
This place is fantastic. Absolutely incredible hand rolls, well-curated spirits, and a kickass environment. Thankyou for a wonderful experience and truly palate-expanding whiskey flight. A++
This establishment was magnificent. Food was fabulous; service was clean, sharp, and timely. Space was effective for long communication. Such an exquisite spot with top quality fish and creative cocktails. The passion for food and drink here is evident.
Sonny’s Pizza is the kind of place you keep coming back to without even thinking about it. Classic, no-nonsense pizza done right, with a welcoming neighborhood vibe and friendly service. The slices are consistently solid, the crust hits that perfect balance, and it always feels like a local hangout rather than a chain. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or posting up with friends, Sonny’s just works. A true community staple.
Our family has dined at Sony’s Italian Restaurant for over 30 yrs! The amazing part is that it has gotten better over that period of time , prices reflect the value has gotten higher not the prices and the value. Tonight I got a Margarita pizza and I had seen a an advertisement for a pizza that had prosciutto along with the margarita toppings and I asked if they could do that and they said yes of course. I also got their famous eggplant parmigiana with the sweet cream sauce, oh my gosh, salad and the spumoni ice cream desserts two of those two slices of pizza was my appetizer eggplant next and the pasta that comes with the eggplant main course. I haven’t had the salad yet haven’t had the dessert yet. $75 out the door and I’ve got enough food for three days that’s like driving through Some drive-through and getting a burger fries and this is just so much more amazing anyway cheers to Sonny’s and happy new year to you all value flavor and an amazing family setting in downtown San Clemente hooray.PS family owned, family opeeated with a few team members thar have beer on deck for decades, this says a lot!!
We actually had a reservation around the corner, we saw Sonny’s and thought it looked better so we just had drinks and an appetizer at our first spot (which was great, just not quite what we ended up being in the mood for). We got cozy seats at the mezzanine bar and got the Hawaiian pizza and some drinks. The pizza was delicious, the staff was friendly and in a great mood. There were couples & families, everyone was chill. It was a great surprise find, and I’m happy to know it’s toddler friendly next time we go out with our kiddo. It’s not just basic pizza, it’s got a nostalgic ambiance and fancy cocktails + elevated takes on the classic pizzeria. A new favorite for sure!
This is hands down one of my favorite restaurants on this planet. Anytime I am within one hour of this place, I will make the drive. That isnt an exaturation, I do it. My favorite dish is the short rib tortellini in the Marsalla cream sauce. It is absolutely delicious. However, my favorite part about this place are the cannolies. The ricotta cheese sauce inside is hands down one of the greatest things I have ever had, literally anywhere on the planet. They think im crazy but I order one with a large glass of milk and I always order a second one to-go. The combo of short rib tortellini and cannoli is to die for. 😋. I live 6 hours away, but every time im nearby I would never miss the opportunity to come to Sonny's
Sonny’s is legendary! I went WAY out of my way today for the BEST eggplant parmesan on the planet. Beyond tasty and be sure to get a side of garlic bread and marinara for dipping. SCRUMPTIOUS!!! I have been eating there for decades! Everyone I have sent just love it!!! The lunch portion is plenty and well priced!!
Amazing Italian food, dishes that are so unique as to feel exotic, the staff (both back of house, and serve staff) aim to please to the point that one cant help but smile when talking to them, the cook on shift even made a spectacular show of something even as simple as boxing up the leftovers. Our evening meal there was to die for, the lasagna was and probably always will be our favorite dish. I recommend Sonny's to everyone. And don't forget the iced glass for a bottle of brew, brought by a waitress that could be used as a working model of serve staff. If I could go back into the food industry, I could only wish to work with this crew. Thank you staff of Sonny's, keep doing the thing!
It’s perfect for a casual family dinner or a low-key date night. The staff is super friendly, and they have a nice patio if you want to soak up the San Clemente air. Definitely a must-try for reliable, delicious comfort food!
It’s been 9 years since our first visit and that photo (not amazing, but shameless plug) has 2.7 million views to date. We returned this weekend after a few years and as expected, we were greeted by a friendly staff and the food was just as amazing as our first visit. Great atmosphere and great people. A mandatory stop for us in San Clemente. Ciao
Don’t think about it, just come! Especially for a date or with just family or a friend. I just want to take my time to express how awesome this restaurant is. My friend (who I claim has a bad taste in food) was with me. We were nearby so we decided to come for my first time. Our server Bianca (shout out to her) was amazing and recommended me the meal we had. I’m so sorry if I butcher the name, pictures will be added but the pizza was amazing and the pasta even better! I remember the pasta started with Rigatoni, and the pizza was B- something LOL I’ll look it up after and edit the name. I just want to say I need to come back here, and try it with sausage as Bianca recommended us. I can definitely see how that would be amazing. This pasta was something I used to get when I was a kid somewhere else but elevated to another level. You guys have another fan and I just want to express my gratitude. 🙏🏼
This place came up on our search for Italian food, Me and my wife were not disappointed! We had calamari as an appetizer one of the best!! The lasagna was tasty, hot and delicious not too much ricotta, and plenty of meat.. the shrimp Alfredo was great, creamy, and tasty.. our server was Vicky, she was lovely, with great insight and recommendations that you don’t find with every server.. over all we recommend and invite you to give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!
Great Italian food, pizza, and pasta. They have been in business over 45 years, and continue to do things right. Highly recommend this restaurant. Went Back last Friday with the whole family. Pizzas....amazing. Even the house salad...delicious! I discovered: Homemade Gnochi, the Seafood Alfredo Linguini Pasta is SO good! You will enjoy. So many options. Great service as well. Enjoy! David Cook
Today was the 1 year anniversary of the first time my Now Girlfriend ever took me to Sonny's. We go just about every other week, and don't always enjoy the Lasagna Special, instead choosing different dishes as often as we can. Their wine list is very nice, and everything compliments the food so well. The girls are all wonderful, and do a great job of taking care of us. No wonder, as awesome as the support staff are in taking care of the details like To-go boxes, etc. Always world class, with the local neighborhood feel of Family. *UPDATE: 9/6/23 We came back tonight to enjoy the Lasagna Special, and brought our own bottle of Chianti Classico Reserve to pair and enjoy. The $15 corkage fee is absolutely reasonable for this privilege, and I tipped an extra 5% to JESSICA, our wonderful waitress to compensate. I/Wethoroughly enjoy the Wine List as presented, and have had probably 65-75% of the brands and classes over the last 18 months. I had purchased a bottle of Ruffino* several months ago specifically to enjoy with the lasagna, lol, and boneheadedly ordered Seafood Linguine, with the incredible wine lemon sauce with capers, d'oh. *the House Chianti Classico Reserve is Santa Margherita, which IS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL, as well, and a Very Good Price.
O my God. Absolutely the best Lasagna I have had in my life. And my dads was pretty good. The Italian Sausage is also on the list as one of the best. The bread is spectacular as well. My wife had a dish that was like a Seaford Lasagna - absolutely amazing. The salad was second to non with i think a house made dressing. Not to mention the people here were very nice. For me a server can make or break your dining experience. Well the people here are great. They also play Italian music to dine with. If you are within a 100 miles of this place it is a must do. The flavor and atmosphere will create a life long experience.
The food is great and the outdoor seating is nice. Off main Blvd in San Clemente but not too noisy at all.

Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 4/5 Drinks: 4/5 Price: 4/5 Parking: 4/5 The theming of the bar felt like you walked in a dive bar in Tokyo, Japan! The staff were so incredibly attentive and welcoming. The overall vibe was to have a good time. The food, although small, packed a great flavor punch. My only regret was not trying more of their extensive selection! Will definitely return during my next SoCal adventure!
Nice little speakeasy. The entrance is unique and we loved the decor and vibe. The service was standard and the drinks & sushi were good but nothing to blow you away. Recommend they change to paper menus! The phone menu was hard to read and it took away from the ambiance they're trying to create.
Good overall. The wait for a table was long but understandable because we were a party of six at peak time. The Linguine spicy calamari had a good texture. The sauce wasn’t anything special. It wasn’t super spicy. The pizza is thin crust and pretty crispy. The garlic bread was good. Nobody had major complaints about what they got.

The atmosphere and speakeasy entrance was great! The sushi/hand roll left a bit more to be desired though. Small portions that tasted alright. The staff were great though and very friendly. Parking is a little difficult but a walk in San Clemente is always nice.
Cocktails: Good cocktails, 5/5. Pricing is appropriate for the type of drinks they make. Ambiance: 5/5 They definitely hit the spot with the speakeasy vibes. Food: 2/5 hand rolls were not really hand rolls (I’m basing these off of having Kazu Nori handrolls). Nothing was outstanding about it and the prices were high for mediocre fish. Service: 2/5 took about 45 minutes to get our handrolls and it was hard to hunt anyone down. I’ve seen businesses with more people and less staff be better managed than this place. Didn’t seem like staff was communicating with one another to who was taking care of us. Overall - go here for the drinks, not the food and I’m sure you’ll have a better experience than we did.

No where do they mention that they stop serving food at 9:30, yet they allow you to make reservations until 10 pm. No one warned us until we actually sat down. Came here hungry, left hungry. Their drinks are good and service was friendly. Will have to come here earlier next time. Hope the owner takes notice and updates their website and yelp page - no where does it mention when the food service stops.
It is basically a bar. Four pages of drinks and 1 1/2 food. You drink downstairs, but cant bring your 18$ drink, that you just orfered upstairs, for no discernable reason. Its better to stay ay Lost Inferno and carry in a pizza from Sonny's.
5th time here, salmon and uni was nice and fresh, the yellow tail was not, next time (if there even will be a 6th time) going to order half as many rolls and because they are a "hit or miss". If you are an alcoholic, this place is perfect because the drinks are well made, if you can afford it 15 $ to 60 $ per drink. But the fish is inconsistent, I don't like the super lazy western approach to the rice being pre-made in a plastic tray, that was washed with regular tap water, not clean filtered water. So all the cleaning chemicals in tap, like Chlorine for example, which does cause cancer, is now on the rice. Definitely not a place for educated people who enjoy clean and safe food that has consistently good quality. But if you are just a average drunk that is consuming alcohol daily and doesn't care about good hygiene or a well balanced lifestyle you will feel at home if you are of low standards and make decent money as the drinks are far from cheap. Sad to see the potential this place has go to waste. Could be attracting people like us that spend 200+ every time, if you fixed the hygiene problem and quit cutting corners on pre-made rice and simply washed your hands with soap for 30 to 60 seconds or simply had 1 person always making the rolls and staying super clean and the rest of you cleaning up tables and making drinks. But instead you are currently catering to the local lower class that have 1 drink and 2 rolls, 2 drinks max if you're lucky. I can afford to spend 300, two to three times a week here and so can my friends, because we love to pig out on good, fresh, clean seafood, accompanied by a couple tasty drinks. But just as last time, probably will be a month before I come back here with my friends again. Maybe two to three months if ever. We were so excited in beginning the first two times we came everything was good and fresh. But obviously management doesn't have the capacity to grasp the concept of consistently providing good service, in other words how all of our businesses make millions because we don't cut corners ever, never compromise on quality and consistency. And the #1 millionaire rule is simple. Trust=Money and the moment you lose trust is the moment you lose money. Get a clue or get out of the business. And parking sucks very bad.
When you think of a thin crust pizza you think slightly crispy not flimsy. There was so much grease on the pizza that that’s all you can taste, taking away from any seasoning it had in the sauce. When I picked up a slice the toppings and everything hit the plate. I ended up having to use a knife and fork to try it. The staff was amazing and kind that’s the only reason I didn’t give it one Star. Later as we are leaving we see a customer with the same pizza and it looked great. So they are capable of doing it right the just need to work on consistency. They weren’t even busy.
Sonny's survives almost entirely on nostalgia, not quality. People hype it up because it's been in San Clemente forever, not because the food is actually good. The food is extremely greasy, the c…
