Awesome experience!! Really good happy hour. Food and drink happy hour specials were generous.
Awesome japanese food, packed! We had to wait for table, everything was delicious!
We had always been having a good lunch special here almost every two to three weeks. They are recently have a great deal for Restaurant Wee. You got an appetizer + two meats+1 veg+ 1 dessert, with white nice, salad and miso soup for just $25. Waiting time is about 35 minutes. They have plenty of seatings when we entered. So we guess the waiting was because they were short of staffs. Overall food taste great as always.
The manger and our waiter were so nice. I ha e a alien necklace I made and they always knotice it. We love this place so much. This is where my boyfriend and I go for our dates nights. The meat is amazing!! And the garlic rice. Yummy!
Hidden gem. Highly recommend, superior service, high quality variety and good food! Large extensive menu and so many great choices. Happy hour menu is so affordable and amazing. Had a great time celebrating here.
Got the lunch set, which was a very reasonable price. Grill the meat at your own pace so it's nice and hot when you add it to your rice bowl. Also came with miso soup and a generous amount of salad. Meat tastes great and the dipping sauces available are nice. The service was a little slow during Friday afternoon.
Absolutely amazing. I have been coming to this restaurant consistently for over 10 years now. This is my favorite japanese bbq place. I love the spicy jalapeno miso marinade they have for their meats and is it unparalleled. The cuts of meat are fairly decent quality. The toro beef is by far my favorite cut of beef. The appetizers and side dishes are also quite plentiful for non bbq lovers as well. The food can be fairly oily but thats about par for the course at a bbq place. The parking can be fairly hit or miss at times but usually it's fine. The wait times however can be quite bad. They no longer take reservations online and only through phone if you have a large party. For a normal small group you have to walk in and expect to wait at least 20-30minutes depending on what time you come.
Great food and great service. Located in a strip mall with lots of food options and they are one of the best. Food here is great. We tried the Ultimate option and every single food item was delicious. It is Japanese BBQ so the food are all delicately prepared. Loved the Toro beef. Highly recommended. Come early and come hungry. It gets busy during lunch and dinner time and especially on weekends.
Was in the mood for some good japanese bbq and decided to stop into Gyu-Kaku since we were in the neighborhood after my daughters martial arts. Parking in the center while free, is a bit difficult especially with popular shops like Trader Joes and Chucky Cheese. Totally forgot it was San Diego Resturant week. Wait wasn't too long at noon. It was about 30 minutes. Sat down and realized it was resturant week. Ordered the lunch special for all three of us. Received three miso soups, rice, salad plus our choice of three appatizers (gyozu, chicken karage, and spicy cucumber salad). After just the salad and appitizers we were starting go get full. All of them was delicious. Although the spicy cucumber salad was not that spicy. Then our three orders of hanger steak, one chicken teriyaki, one spicy pork, and one garlic chicken thigh came. Veggies including brocolli, zuchinni, and shisito peppers also arrived. After grilling everything and sharing one bowl of rice between the three of us, we called it done. Packing up the majority of the meat (beef, chicken, and pork), some veggies, plus the two bowls of rice, we received our desert. My husband grabbed the smores, and my daughter and myself had the green tea ice cream. All was wonderful. Green tea ice cream was flavorful and my husband loved the smore my daughter put together for him after burning the mashmellow in the fire. That night with the leftovers I made fried rice with all the leftovers. Great value for two meals for threr people for $75.00 + tip. Thank yoy Gyu-Kaku. We will be back.
One the best places to eat in San diego. The grills are a little different from the usual Asian BBQ places. It gets dirty fast and it was a little cooking on one side of the grill more than the other. Food quality is AAA for sure. We ordered 5 to 7 types of meats and each times we enjoyed it. The rice ball is larger than expected. The shrimp was so fresh and huge. Garlic edamame, miso and gyoza were just as expected. The place is almost double the price of the other Asian BBQ places in the vicinity. At first I was a little hesitant but once the meets started coming and tasted them we knew the price was worth it for sure. Excellent service. Kids eat free. Refill drinks. Water is free. 2 menu's 54$ and 65$ or so.
We enjoyed our dining experience at this location. The dining room was clean and kept up. The service was friendly and attentive. We ordered the Supreme (all you can eat) our favorite meat was Harami Miso Skirt Steak. I enjoyed the spicy shrimp and garlic noodles with chicken. We did have to return the gyu sushi because is didn’t look/smell fresh to our liking. We ended dinner with s’mores. Overall we enjoyed dinner at this location.
Absolutely delicious and worth getting a group of friends together to explore more of the menu together and divide the bill. We got the dinner for two and should’ve stopped eating but it was happy hour and ordered a few items off the a la carte menu because we could. The only complaint is that some of the marinated meats were a tad too salty which was a bummer. Their table ponzu and spicy sauces were tasty. The spicy had a sweet heat that even my partner could enjoy it and why we used half the bottle.
Finally we got a chance to try 牛角 out in San Diego. I had it before in NYC, but it’s too long ago, I already totally forgot the taste. Since this store is super popular, we had to go to take a number at their front desk on a weekday before 6. The waiting time is about 20 minutes. The good thing is they have happy hour before 6:30, the price is great! All the meats and veggies are delicious. I highly recommend the beef belly, it is yummy! The appetizers are great as well, I like my soft tofu and spicy cucumber. The salad is good too. By the way, I love their service, one of the best services in my San Diego restaurant dining experiences.
Went here and only ordered the small plates. All the food was delicious! We were least impressed by the black pepper wings, but it could have been because we ate them last and everything else was so delicious! We ordered (left to right) the Spicy Miso Edamame, Spicy Cabbage Salad, Steamed Chili Dumplings, Spicy Tuna Volcano, Garlic Fried Rice and Black Pepper Wings (not pictured).
It's clean indoors. Good sauce but I don't like too sweet in marinated beef and cut too small. I know you guys love Korean BBQ, in my opinion, I feel like we eat spices. So I love a big slice with less sauce, so this place is not to my taste. The restroom smelled bad, they should give the separator for sauces.
My wife and I are returning diners after 8 years being away. We came on a Monday for dinner since they had all-day happy hour. The atmosphere hasn't changed. As they sit the party, they call out their Japanese greeting. It wasn't too loud, we were able to hold a conversation without having to talk loud or yell. With it being their happy hour, we ordered a la carte rather than their course selections. We each got a Kirin to drink. We ordered crispy gyoza and takoyaki for appetizers. The takoyaki was good, and the gyoza was average. We ordered garlic rice to go with the meats, which we got our favorites from the past. The meats were good as we remember, but the garlic rice was subpar. Our server was quick to bring out the orders, and checked on us regularly but lessened as it got busier. Even though it was happy hour, it was still a little pricey. We would come back, but not at the frequency we had done in the past.
This is a diamond in the rough! People were courteous and polite; and the food was phenomenal! We had 10 of the beef choices and two pork (one marinated pork there other porky belly), the two marinated, beef and pork, were the most tender of all the cuts of meet l meat to include the filet minion which wasn't as tender as you'd like in a filet. Nevertheless, you cook the meat yourself on this small gas grill in the center of your table, similar to a Korean bbq restaurant. As far as sides we had asparagus, garlic spinach and broccoli and cheese. Surprisingly, all these vegitable came out raw in tin foil. We are expected to cook them on the grill. So, we opened them up poured some of the sweet soy sauce in them and cooked them one at a time. They turned out delicious. Asparagus is my wife favorite, I, however, do not liked it; but amazingly enough I took a bite and it was delicious. I actually ate several pieces. She said the same with my spinach. The appetizers were a hit! I genuinely love fried dumplings, theirs after fantastic! It would've been easy to eat a couple orders all by myself. I also ordered fried calamari which was good, slightly overdone; but it was their dipping sauces that shined here, fabulous 👌! We're not drinkers or wine connoisseurs, lol, but we like some of the sweeter wines that don't have a strong alcohol taste...I say all of that to say, their plum wine was sweet and delightful. I apologize for not knowing the notes of wine. \○/ For dessert 🍨 I had they've rice dough covered ice cream (forget the name) I enjoyed the strawberry flavored one but didn't the green tea flavored one. I also found the flour on the outside of it a little off putting. My wife had the chocolate lava cake and ice cream. She loved it. Touch and moist is how she described it to me. Atmosphere was two stars. The decor, well there really isn't a decor. The walls all need painted and the plane just needs a professional to come in the and spruce it up with updated appropriate decor. The restroom have an awful, seriously awful small. That also needs immediate attention. Those are the reasons for the 2 stars. Overall, I'm saving it as a place I don't want to forget and so I can return when I'm back in this area. We seriously enjoyed our meal! Wonderful food and the people are great! A must of you enjoy delicious food and want to grill your own food. The cost is fairly steep. $54, $64, & $74 we choose the$74 so we wouldn't be limited from any of the options. Or bottle of wine was like $28. This is expensive; but not outrageous, it is comparable to other venues like it and in our opinion totally worth it!!!
Came here for lunch during restaurant week. The lunch deal includes salad/soup/rice, choice appetizer, one of three set meats (beef w/ chicken or pork), choice vegetable, and choice dessert. We were able to get seated promptly, but could tell our table was a bit dirty. Food came out at randon times, with appetizers coming last. Quality wise, the food is delicious and worth the deal. Not sure what is going on, but I can never make a reservations on either website or app and assume it's been turned off. So best to go early if it gets busy later.
Wait time on a saturday evening: 60 minutes - they will tell you 40 but you will wait longer. I've been going to gyukaku for years; I would spend birthdays there. I haven't been in while and the menu has changed. I would normally get the al la carte but since it was my friends bday I decided to get the courses. This time I chose the chefs choice. The starters were eh, it came the classic miso soup and hot stone rice which were great, I didn't like the gyu-sushi which cold meat on top of the sushi rice. We were given 4 so I took 2 and my friend took 2. My first bite was great and the cut of the meat was tender, but my second piece it was so hard that I had to spit it out. The choices of meat were okay - I think you're better off ordering their premium meats ala carte.
Delicious experience. Really loved the food. Restaurant week plus happy hour means we ate a LOT for a reasonable price. Marinades were delicious. Same with sides. The negative: They have an ignorant policy of requiring the whole party to be present prior to being seated. The restaurant was less than 50% full and I asked to be seated before my friend arrived as I wanted to order a drink and appetizers. They refused until I pushed and asked for a manager. - 1 ⭐️ Cockroach 🪳 in the dining area. I tried so hard to catch it on video, but it moved too fast. When I looked under the tables, it was FILTHY. - 1 ⭐️
We came for dinner, got reservations for 5:45 and were seated right away. We didn’t get our server to take our order for the first 10 minutes, we had to go to the front desk and asked for it. The meat was basic, wasn’t super high quality. The wait time in between each order was long enough for us to forget what we ordered. We found ourselves staring at the fire and wondering. Worth a try but not coming back.
I recently visited Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ with my colleagues for lunch, opting for the all-you-can-eat premium option with 45 items to choose from. The food was enjoyable, and the variety was impressive. However, I encountered some issues with the service. Unfortunately, the service was quite slow, with our meat orders often taking 10-15 minutes to arrive after we placed them. As an Asian myself, I was disappointed to see that the Asian staff weren’t busy at all but didn’t pay much attention to our table, despite it being the only one in that area. We found ourselves waving them over frequently just to place our orders. Towards the end of our meal, one staff member (who appeared to be Mexican) made a significant difference. He was attentive, served the meats quickly, and checked in with us several times to see if we needed to order more. Overall, while the food was good, the slow service was disappointing. I think I might explore other BBQ options in Convoy Street next time!!!
Gyukaku used to be one of my go to spots, but has really declined in quality while increasing in price. We usually order one of the set meals and they’ve missed one or more items multiple times (recommend you take a picture of what you order since they take your menu away). Food arrives out of order which means you’re eating your meat long before your salad or rice hits the table. The grill is uneven and will cook on one side more than the other. It’s Japanese yakiniku without any of the quality, which is why this is on my list of restaurants to never visit again.
