Where do I start? maybe the amazing homemade ice cream.... Maybe the super awesome Beatles paraphernalia all over the walls. Maybe just knowing Will Ferrell is a reoccurring customer. The atmosphere. The incredible staff. I could go on and on. I was just a visitor in San Diego and was told we had to go. We did not regret that!
Parking can be a challenge at times, especially during the day, but the handmade ice cream is worth it! They have vegan flavors as well. Skip Handel's and just come here for better ice cream. In fact, it's so good that many of the neighborhood restaurants use their ice cream for desserts.
I love this place. Our family has been going here for 20 years. Long before all of the new, over priced places with flavors you've never heard of before showed up. All of their flavors are hand made with love and 1/3 the amount of sugars as all the rest. They are a staple in the Normal Heights community.
Love this place, the best milkshake I've ever had 😋 always super friendly service!
We'll definitely be back soon! The waffle cone is super fresh and also a great deal! It's flakey but sturdy and delicious. I got pumpkin ice cream and my husband got cookies n cream and coffee. I tried his coffee ice cream and wish I had ordered it! It was definitely the best, strongest coffee flavor ice cream I've ever had. We randomly popped in on a Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by this ice cream shop!
I love this great small business. I've been here several times. Their ice cream is always delicious, and the workers are always nice and courteous. They usually have about a dozen flavors available. Cute, eclectic decor.
You gotta visit this place. Used to be Will Ferrells favorite spot. Ice-cream is pretty traditional, airy, classic flavors. But I just love going and soaking in the vibes!
Love this place! Me and my family went here, their mango sorbet actually tastes like it’s made out of mango. Gem amongst rocks of fake ice cream shops.
Hands down the best ice cream in San diego! They make all of the ice cream themselves on site with recipes they developed years ago. The service is excellent. The prices are unbelievably low. Whenever friends visit I always take them there. It's a real treasure. I highly recommend it.
This is our go-to ice cream place. Dick and Anna are wonderful. They are very supportive of local schools, local causes, and local politics. They make all of their own ice cream and waffle cones. This means that a given flavor may vary slightly over time. The selection is good. The list on the board includes all the current flavors, the freezer case doesn't list the flavors hiding underneath. The decor is a collection of many things. They have a lot to look at while you eat your ice cream. The store is small with limited seating. This generally isn't a problem except during very busy times. I'd give Mariposa two spoons up!
A great neighborhood ice cream spot with classic homemade flavors. I enjoyed the Heath butter toffee and previously the maple walnut. Definitely stop in!
Two words: Mexican Chocolate. I love coming to Mariposas. It is hands down the best ice cream in San Diego. It is even better than Thrifty. The people working there are always very friendly. You can try any of their flavors before you buy. They don't have over 30 flavors, but they don't need to. What little they have all works well. The prices are reasonable for what you get. The ice cream is hand made, so it is always fresh, creamy, and it just has that great "natural" taste and feeling. If you haven't been here yet, you need to! Don't forget to check their hours of operation. Most of the time the earliest they open is 1PM.
What this little neighborhood ice parlor lacks in size, it more than makes up in taste and selection. They crank out home churned.ice cream in a huge assortment of flavors. We stopped by while taking our pup for a walk. I have seen this place many times as I drive on Adams and every single time there are people waiting outside. Because of COVID they are only serving one party at s time and enforcing social distancing while you wait. This time as we passed by there was not a single person in line so we tested ourselves to a cone each. Let me tell you, the heath toffee crunch I ordered was absolutely delicious. It was creamy and sweet with a hint of coffee with plenty of crushed toffee and nuts. I ordered it on a waffle cone and was not at all disappointed. I understand the lines now. These folks here are crafting incredibly good ice cream. If you are in the Normal Heights area, give them a try. I can't wait for summer to kick into gear.on those hot and muggy nights to go back for more. They are open late and that bodes well for those of us who want a sweet treat on a warm summer night.
They have a lot of flavors, the ice cream is very creamy and delicious. It's a nice spot to stop for a quick treat, I usually get the small cup and sit at the tables outside. They have some nice Beatles memorabilia inside too 🤩
Delicious creamy ice cream. Family friendly. Great to support a local business.
This is my new favorite ice cream in San Diego. I'll still go to Little Italy for S&S's special flavors sometimes but I am literally going to drive right by Stella Jeans, Mutual Friend, North Park Creamery, and An's to go here. They gave legit samples, were extremely friendly, and served quickly. Dad in front of me had a kid drop their cone - no problem, quick fix. Wanted something weird - we can do that - here's my recommendaiton. I got a double scoop and loved them both. If you want an Instagram picture or Myspace badge - go wait in line for an hour. If you want good ice cream - go here. Holy smokes it was great. Oh, and I ate it so fast I forgot to take a pic.
My favorite ice cream shop in the entire city! There’s a ton of new popular spots (with long lines o_0.. ), but I’ll always choose Mariposa 😊 Something about this shop that is simply the platonic ideal of a cozy neighborhood ice cream parlor. Ice cream is creamy & fresh – classic, satisfying, and super good every time. There’s always little kids with their fam sitting at the kiddie table eating ice cream and making memories, walls plastered with Beatles memorabilia, and multiple Will Farrell visits lol – just really, really cute. I’m a two-scoops-in-a-waffle-cone kinda gal while my husband gets a whole pint of cookies & cream to smash at home in privacy haha. Counter help is always charming and friendly ❤ Stop by here get some ice cream and a big ol’ smile on your face, guaranteed
One of my favorite Ice cream shops in San Diego. They have been a staple in Normal heights for ovef 20 years. My usual order is two scoops of their toffee butter ice cream with their homemade waffle cone. You have to get the waffle cone. I haven't been to another ice cream shop with a better tasting cone. I wish they sold them in packs
Been coming years for many, many years. Each visit is special and unique. The ice cream is absolutely delicious, natural and fresh. Not too sweet with the right texture. They have a great variety of flavors. Several with in-season/local ingredients. The owner is incredible. I love being there. There’s no other place like it in SD. The VERY BEST ICE CREAM. Very nostalgic feeling and good vibes all around.
This is one of the best ice cream shops, not only in San Diego but that I've ever visited. I'm fat and I travel so trust me on this one. My personal favorite is banana-walnut, but if you're new here, try mexican chocolate or cookie dough. The service is outstanding, the way they treat everyone (I mean EVERYONE) here should be the benchmark for all businesses. The atmosphere is really nice, you can walk through the family business history while waiting and enjoy looking at some cool collectibles. The space is limited if you're planning to have your ice cream there but take-out is a great option too. Their product travels really well. Parking is close to none but you can park nearby and walk, is a nice area.
THIS IS THE BEST ice cream and experience I have ever had. It is reasonably priced, unique variety of flavors, fresh, sustainable, jolly environment and people! The next time I am in San Diego, you can BET on me eating all 3 meals here. Best ice cream of my life. Thank you!!💛
Super welcoming, cozy spot. High ceilings with lots of memorabilia. Flavor variation is plenty. I got a single scoop of pumpkin on a cake cone. So creamy and delicious. Could taste the pumpkin and the one scoop was just enough. Seating inside and outside was great. I can’t wait to be back.
I love that their ice cream wasn't too sweet, just perfectly balanced and delicious. The atmosphere and decor was really neat too. The heath butter toffee and cookies and cream were both great.
Literally the best ice cream in San Diego, we have tried them all. Best vibes as well! Home style and welcoming. No pretentious flavors just flawlessly executed classics. Extremely friendly staff
An excellent spot in Normal Heights that isn’t overrated! Really! I got the cookies and cream flavor and it was fantastic. The cookies they use are not Oreos but a crunchy, chocolate cookie with more structure with a pinch of cinnamon. The consistency is fantastic as it is made daily in house. Also, every time I come in, the staff are really nice. Like genuine people.
Delicious! Was eating dinner nearby and wanted something sweet and thank goodness we found this place. I had Cookies and Cream and Maple Walnut, the Ice-Cream was so good! I am not in the area often but would go back just for this ice-cream. it was so loaded with cookies and walnuts!
So much love for this place. This hole in the wall local ice cream shop just gives you such a warm vibe. They have quite a variety of flavors to choose from. The ice creams they have are not too creamy and not too sweet. Perfect to fulfill your cravings without all the guilt!! Support local business!!!
Best ice cream we've had in a long time. Happy family.
Been there many times and I always walk out of there happy. Today I had the best shake I've had all year, a Blackberry shake that was spectacular. The staff is the best, always friendly. Best Ice Cream place in San Diego!
Cool hip shop in Normal Heights. We were on our way to another ice cream shop but the line was ridiculous. So I searched for another one so I can make my kids happy. It was the best mistake ever. I have to say it was the best ice cream in all of San Diego. It brought memories of my grandma's treats. You know that when food can activate memories, it is bomb. The flavors were ridiculously amazing. We went in and ordered our ice cream. It was so good that we ate next door so we could come back for more dessert. BTW, the 2 persons attending us were really kind and even shared some stories about the shop.
This spot is such a gem! I was greeted by the kindest woman at the counter who indulged in some lovely conversation while scooping my cherry ice cream brownie sundae. I love brownie hot fudge sundaes, and they do it right here with all the toppings! The shop is old school and charming. It was a really nice rainy afternoon pit stop. I just moved to Normal Heights and will be back often!
You walk in, there’s an old school vibe to the place. You know for fact that it’s been here for decades, which could only mean one thing—the ice cream has to be delicious. I was not let down! The ice cream is flavorful, but the most memorable part of this experience for me? The gentlemen who helped us was patient, kind and seemed happy to be there. I didn’t catch his name but he made it a memorable experience!
Cute little ice cream shop that serves handmade ice cream. Yummy!
Delicious! Ice cream was fresh and sweet but not super creamy. Waffle cones are made fresh, so much better than the store bought ones! The women at the counter was very friendly and the old Beatle memorabilia around the shop is adorable. Very affordable compared to a lot of local places. If not the best ice cream in San Diego certainly worth the visit.

Incredible ice cream and service. Highly recommended
hands-down, the best ice cream. ever! Handles is good, but this is great! You cannot beat the location, We love to hop on our bike bikes, ride the bike trail down to the beach and our reward for the long bike ride is always Mariposa’s ice cream! Two favorites, Banana or maple walnut or the magnificent mint chip!
So far this is the best ice cream spot we've found! Location is great too, no issues finding parking on a Sunday. The 2 men at the register were super friendly, customer service is 10/10. You have to try the Mexican chocolate & mango sorbet! This one ACTUALLY tastes like Mexican chocolate & the mango is so fresh it's basically a soft frozen mango. SO GOOD!
Nobody comes close to Mariposa! This Gem is happens to be in our Neighnorhood! We got to meet Will Farrell here a few days back! Kids love it, wife loves it and I love it! Tried other places, nobody serves it or the taste like Mariposa!

I've tried a few different flavors here and one of my favorite things about the ice cream is that it is not overly sweet. It's just a great neighborhood spot for a scoop. There are some seating areas inside and a couple outside as well. Though it is not my absolute favorite ice cream shop, I have not been disappointed by the flavors I've tried so far.
Yummy ice cream flavors. Solid shop. Good service. I had mango and my wife had heath or something like that. We enjoyed them. Good portion size
Heath butter toffee was the best flavor. Rocky road was not for me Chocolate chip cookie dough was surprisingly not as good as heath butter. What I liked is: Its creamy but doesn’t feel heavy. It melts quickly as a sign of good quality. I wish it would have had more chunks and stuff. Taste wise it was ok, but not wow or for me to go out of my way to get it. It give it a 3.5 / 4 stars.
Yummy Ice Cream! Cute local ice cream shop. They have ice cream flavor staples like rocky road and vanilla. We were able to sample the ice creams before deciding which flavor to get. We got cookies and cream, eggnog, rocky road, peanut butter fudge, and Mexican chocolate. Cookies & cream and Mexican chocolate were our favorites!

Went there during a weekday evening in the summer. Parking is quite the pain as is parking throughout San Diego. But anyway, we walked there. I honestly was expecting more like a Mexican ice cream place, but it is not. I initially got a certain kind of negative vibe for asking for some tastings. I asked for two. I also tried other two flavors from someone else sharing with me. I would prefer more presence of the flavors in the recipe. The creaminess was good.
I really wanted to like this place more. The texture of the ice cream was great. So creamy! I tried strawberry and Mexican chocolate. I thought they both lacked flavor. I also tried the chocolate and that was good but nothing mind blowing. Wife got a banana split and she thought it was good. The prices were solid. Overall, it was okay but I'd much rather go to other local shops. I'm still undecided if I'll go back. The staff was nice.
The people were extremely nice which is why I gave it three stars but I did not like the tastes. It's a personal preference but I prefer ice cream where I can taste the milk fat and that it's creamy. I don't like when it tastes like flavored sugar water ice milk. I had the pistachio and the maple walnut. Both flavors tasted like nothing. The nuts saved it from being a total waste of my carb count but the actual ice cream was really below average for me. Very cute place though. I think people not picky about the quality of just the ice cream - no frills - would enjoy it just for the sugar.
Flavors tried this time: Mexican Chocolate and Cookies n'mint. A welcoming, family shop. They are small and cozy and you can listen to children's laughter while you enjoy your ice cream. The ice cream itself is good. It has its own texture, really light and soft, and it's savor is subtle. Mexican Chocolate was kind of a blended mix of chocolate and vanilla. It's pleasant and calm. Cookies n'mint were good on the combination of cookies and cream texture, but the mint flavor was artificial and a bit too strong, so it covered the others. On both, excessive sugar was not a problem.. you can eat the whole bowl without getting overloaded by it. Go to the shop and enjoy some peaceful moments.
