Our first restaurant upon our arrival to SD yesterday. I had an IPA cerveza with the guacamole salad, made at the table and both my wife I ordered refried beans, her’s with a tortilla. Great service and the place is finely decorated including planters along the parking lot outside dinning.
So good! Came a few minutes before 6 so were able to take advantage of the happy hour specials and tried 3 different street tacos - shrimp, chicken, and steak. The steak was my favorite but the standout of the night was the queso fundido. The salsa and tortillas were both super fresh. Our server, David, was fantastic and was patient enough to let me practice my Spanish. Will be back to try the lobster and the fish tacos!
My Boyfriend and I ate here on 8/23/24, around 7:30pm-ish. We were greeted right away and we asked for an outside table. The ambiance was very nice and romantic with the outdoor lights and intimate table for two. The host, brought us chips and salsa, and took our first drink order; which was brought out fairly quickly. Cesar was our server, and I noticed he was also bartending. This made me appreciate the teamwork between the host and server, in the beginning, until Cesar came to greet us. Cesar, even though having to make drinks, I assume for the restaurant, was still attentive, friendly, and on point with the drinks and serving us. The food was really good. It had lots of flavor and the portion was pretty big. We ordered the Shrimp Enchiladas, and the Chicken mole, and lastly for dessert we had the Coco flan. Pros: no wait time, parking available-no charge, server was friendly and on point, food and drinks were good, as well as, portion and price. Con: I would have liked it if the server told us his name without me asking for it; so the switch from host to server would have been more understandable.
Great spot to get good Mexican food, it was delicious. Started off with the chips and amazing salsa but the guacamole made table side was even better. Had the crab enchiladas and steak burritos, portions were ginormous and taste didn’t disappoint. The hibiscus margarita was also great and slowly creeps up on you. Overall, a wonderful experience and definitely a place to visit again.
Let's start off by saying that the Google pictures alone helped us picked this place.... We got here we where greeted upon arrival, the location it self looks extremely beautiful and upper class Mexican restaurant a true Bistro look to it. Pics of some attached, very inviting and from what we saw they where dog friendly in the patio area. The food it's self was amazing presantaion, taste great and feels you up. Only thing I can actually say is that the salsa would be better if it was not blended for the chip's Yes they serve you chips... Great service. Overall if I lived here in San Diego I be here a lot and will be here next time we are in town. By the way there is a Pic of the restroom here and if it's kept this beautiful I can imagine how clean the kitchen is.
This restaurant is a bit pricier than what my family and I usually eat so I was a bit skeptical at first. Then they brought out the chips and salsa and at first I thought "oh nice, free chips." But trust me when I say their salsa is amazing and their chips we're still warm from the frier. I don't have a very good spice tolerance so I was ecstatic to find the salsa wasn't very spicy. That was definitely the highlight of the food. We then ordered a steak dish and fish dish for around $25 each and the size certainly wasn't as generous as the refillable chips. Admittedly, the fish was delicious (mahi mahi fish, highly recommend). However, the condiments were average (bean dip and rice) and the steak (we ordered it medium well) was very chewy. I swear I spent a whole 2 minutes chewing the same piece of thumb sized beef. Overall, some of the food was really good, some not so much. What really made up for the disappointing beef was the atmosphere of the restaurant. Despite being a bigger than average building, both interior and exterior expressed a homey, welcoming ambiance. There were a lot of decorative pieces and potted plants that really complimented the building. There were also a few string lights near the front and a candle in the middle of each table (we came while it was still light out and sadly didn't get to experience the candles). There's also a few tables for outdoor seating and a bar attached to the restaurant. With all the goods and bads (mainly goods) said, this was a pretty solid restaurant ┻┻︵¯\(ツ)/¯︵┻┻
The other day, my friend invited me to lunch at Ortega's: A Mexican Bistro, in Hillcrest. It was an awesome experience. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because of limited parking and exorbitant prices. It's a quaint little Bistro; when you arrive you are greeted and seated. You can dine indoors, or out on the patio. We chose to eat outside. They start you off with homemade tortilla chips and fresh salsa. I had a coke, and my friend had an ice tea. My friend ordered a Cesar's Salad, and I ordered two Baja Steak tacos. The food was superb, but on the pricey side. ($19.75 for two tacos). All in all, if you want tasty, authentic Mexican cuisine and you're near Hillcrest, stop by Ortega's.
"Excellent Mexican spot with Baja-style lobster, pomegranate margaritas & tableside guacamole." "Great service. Good margarita! Lobster a bit chewy. But overall, great value!" "Dinner was excellent and service was even better. Lobster, rice and beans delicious!" Overall, Ortega's A Mexican Bistro seems like a great place to go for a delicious Mexican meal and a fun atmosphere. I would definitely recommend checking it out!
Upon spontaneously dropping by Ortega's Mexican Bistro in Hillcrest, San Diego, we were delighted to be quickly seated at a table for two. The atmosphere was charming and softly lit, creating an instantly warm and welcoming setting. Our server was nothing short of friendly, taking the time to explain the menu to us and patiently addressing our inquiries. I had some special dietary requests, which were catered to seamlessly without any hassle. Our dining experience kicked off with complimentary Nacho Chips and Salsa. As soon as we finished our first serving, a second one arrived promptly at our table without even having to request for it - talk about attentive service! The star of the night was undoubtedly the vegetarian burrito without cheese, which was simply delicious. The sautéed onions and bell peppers were cooked to perfection, lending their rich flavors to the dish. The food, service, and overall ambiance certainly exceeded our expectations. I would wholeheartedly recommend Ortega's Mexican Bistro to anyone in search of an authentic and enjoyable Mexican culinary experience in San Diego. We will definitely be coming back!
Made a reservation and went on a Saturday night.... wasn't too busy. Laid back little spot. I suggest the queso fundido as an appetizer! Comes out on a skillet with fresh tortillas...so freaking good We also ordered the shrimp enchiladas and carnitas plates. Overall everything was good, we left with full bellies
This restaurant is a short walking distance from the Hillcrest Hill Bed & Breakfast where we were staying. We arrived at 5 pm during happy hour (3-6 pm) and enjoyed delicious sangrias and tacos! The shrimp tacos were excellent and with two tacos and beans it was more than enough for dinner. Excellent service as well.
The absolute slowest service I have ever had. Perhaps they were short on staff. I only saw 1 waiter & the cook. The waiter was polite but I would not say he had a great personality. Gorgeous restaurant and patio. Pina colada was super. Taco soup favorite was basically broth and tortilla strips. I didn't eat it. Black beans & refried beans were pureed like baby food. The hot sauce is unique, nothing to write home about. I reccomend this place for drinks, the atmosphere is a nice. The dinner not so much.
