Strangely one of the best kept secrets in union square. Extremely talented bartender staff who will try any drink you ask for and are also quite creative. They are super friendly always willing to chat and have the benefit of working in a very beautiful restaurant. This restaurant space has evolved but it's still one of the more beautiful ones in San Francisco surveying great seafood and Tapas.

Wowza!!! This was a surprise hit in NYE afternoon. We were looking for a tapas bar near Union Square and we ended up here… MUCH TO OUR DELIGHT! It’s mainly French influenced cuisine with and extensive cocktail bar and a decor that feels like a Wonka meets Gaudi. (Jellyfish hanging lights?! 🤷‍♂️) The portions we small (similar to those in France) and the flavors were AMAZING!! And the cocktails were fab as well. Next time we’re in SF, we’ll likely make a bee-line right to Ula. Pricey, but worth every penny. NOTE: they build 20% gratuity into the tab, even for a party of 2. Took us off guard, so just so you know.

I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant during brunch. The food was absolutely delicious, and I really enjoyed sitting at the bar — the atmosphere was great and very comfortable. Our waitress, Marina, was extremely attentive and made me feel very welcome, giving me a lot of personal attention throughout the visit. The presentation of both the food and the dessert was outstanding — everything looked and tasted amazing. I truly enjoyed my time here and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

I had the most wonderful first visit to Ula while traveling through San Francisco. We ordered the tuna steak, and it was absolutely divine – perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The entire menu felt so thoughtfully curated, and every bite was exceptional. The interior is stunning – sophisticated, warm, and inviting – making the whole experience even more special. The staff were attentive and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. I can’t wait to return on my next trip to San Francisco. Highly recommend Ula for anyone looking for exquisite food and a beautiful dining atmosphere!

Ula Restaurant & Tapas Bar in San Francisco is a Mediterranean-European seafood restaurant located at 450 Post Street, near Union Square. It specializes in seafood, grilled meats, handmade pasta, and tapas, with options for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. Signature dishes include octopus salad, tuna tartare, eggplant carpaccio, and lamb chops. The interior features a maximalist art-deco design with maritime-themed décor, creating a warm and romantic atmosphere. The Jellyfish Bar offers cocktails, wine, and a casual spot for drinks and tapas. Pros: stylish, intimate ambiance, attentive service, high-quality seafood and tapas. Cons: service can be slow during peak hours. In short: Ula is ideal for romantic dinners, special occasions, or casual meals, offering a refined Mediterranean dining experience in central San Francisco.

Gorgeous place with very scrumptious food. We arrived early and we're promptly seated. The service was excellent. Had a lovely champagne cocktail with some fun appetizers, like chicken pasty, eggplant and crab cakes. Each dish was delicious and very well served. Dinner was branzino, salmon and scallops. The dishes were excellent, taste and presentation wise. Ended with a chocolate mousse. I loved the romantic vibe of this place. It was classy, the service was awesome with very thoughtful servers and the food was the best. Loved the sauces they used on the food as it had hints of mint and spices. Also many spots to click beautiful photos. Overall, a must visit.

spectacular food, beautiful ambiance, exceptional service. If you’re looking for an elevated yet comfortable dining experience in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square neighborhood, Ula is a winner from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Such a great restaurant. The ambiance is fantastic and the mosaic tile ceilings are gorgeous. Servers and management were very friendly and welcoming. Great appetizers, great dinner, great dessert. Prices are on the upper end but food quality is up to par and its also on par for similar places in the city. They support the arts and are highly recommend as a visit when you're in the city or if you are attending a show, check them out!

This place is a gem! The ambiance and decor are spectacular. Service was excellent, and food was very well prepared and delicious. The tapas format allowed us to pick and choose share a variety of items. The cocktail and wine list was also top notch.

🌟 Ula Restaurant - A True Gem in San Francisco! 🌟 I recently dined at Ula and had an absolutely incredible experience. From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the warm ambiance and chic decor, setting the perfect mood for a memorable evening. The food? Simply outstanding. Every dish was a delightful fusion of flavors – from the fresh, inventive appetizers to the beautifully presented main courses. The attention to detail in both taste and presentation was truly impressive. But what really made the night unforgettable was our waiter, Casey. Casey’s impeccable service and genuine enthusiasm elevated our dining experience to a whole new level. Attentive without being intrusive, he guided us through the menu with insightful recommendations and made us feel truly welcome. It’s rare to find someone who genuinely loves what they do, and it showed in every interaction. Ula is definitely a spot I’ll return to, not just for the amazing food but for the exceptional service. Huge thanks to Casey for making our lunch extra special! #SanFranciscoEats #UlaRestaurant #GreatService #FoodieFinds

We stopped in for an early “snack” and ended up staying for hours. Our waiter , Kacey, was both informative and friendly. Drinks were perfect and the food was amazing - that atmosphere was that of a Michelin Star restaraunt. Highly recommend the tuna tartar

An absolute gem of a restaurant! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was outstanding—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Every bite felt thoughtfully crafted. The staff were attentive, friendly, and genuinely made the experience special without being overbearing. Service was quick, the place was clean, and the overall vibe made me want to stay longer. Easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be back!

Food was delicious. Small place but started to buzz when I left around 6. Didn't get much information from the server and things were pretty expensive but I would come back in a heartbeat.

If you are looking for the most exclusive little sushi shop in SF, this is the place. 4 tables and a small bar. Theresa is the gem taking care of you and she always has great suggestions. I've been visiting annually for many years. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. My only tip is to use your bathroom before going. Not because they don't have one, but due to the small size, their restroom is downstairs in the building directly next to them. It's fine and clean, just a little out of the way.

My new go to Sushi in the union square area. It is very small so I suspect there are waits some of the time. The service was excellent with really fresh food. The server recommended the salmon belly and she was spot on.

Cute little place tucked away on a sidestreet. Excellent sushi! Young lady who served us was very helpful and sweet. Raining, cold, windy outside, kinda like an old John Carpenter movie 😀

Phenomenal food, i got Togo and it’s the best sushi i ever had. I must try it in person. The atmosphere is very cozy, great service, and the food? Some of the most freshest, delicious, smoothest, creamiest, just thinking about this sushi makes me crave it.

I came here for a convention a couple months ago, this place was delicious and I couldn't get it off my mind. Being from Toronto, I was so craving this. I just came back to SF for a trip with my family (primarily to come here) and gosh.. it was delicious. Words cannot express how fresh the food is and how much I love this place.. Out of my 36 years of living i've tried sushi all over the world this place is one of the best. Even sushi in Japan couldn't compare. I just had to right a review for this hidden gem and I seriously think that if you don't like this place, you are crazy. The staff is sweet and I met the owner, and she was such a dear. The place is small, but go there. Its amazing and delicious.

Really intimate, small sushi spot with a 4-seater bar. Nigiri is great. I got the 12-piece nigiri chef’s special, which was excellent. Excellent restaurant and will definitely be coming back!

A hidden gem in Exton! - Tiny, cozy spot with a super small sushi bar and simple decor—but don’t let that fool you. The fish is incredibly fresh and the food quality is outstanding. Felt like a local secret. I had a great experience and will definitely be back!

First day in San Francisco we were hungry and stumbled upon Akiko’s randomly. Initially we were not that impressed since the spot is a bit tight and only ran by a few folks but the food was amazing. We really enjoyed the Nigiri 12 piece special; we will try to go again before we leave San Francisco. Great service and food. Highly recommended.

It's a very small restaurant so there isn't a lot of seating. We ordered an assortment of sushi, and all of it was fresh, delicious, and priced accordingly. The service was pleasant and fast. We both enjoyed it and would return.

Delicious! Great sushi in a family owned intimate restaurant. This is the place you go to appreciate the taste of each dish. Not the place if you’re looking for a livelier louder atmosphere. I ordered the omakase so chefs choice, but each dish was unique and the service was amazing. The omakase can be expensive so you’ll wanna keep that in mind. Will absolutely come back to try their a la carte options

Their omakase is a spiritual experience. The best quality fish I've ever had. In a city that contains some of the best restaurants in the country, if not the world, this is a hidden gem just a short walk from Union Square. Come hungry.

The atmosphere and decoration of this restaurant is definitely one of a kind. The original lamps and decorations make you think you are under the sea. Our waiter was really kind and nice. The drink I got was a non-alcoholic one - I can’t remember the name and couldn’t find it on online menu, but it was delicious. Definitely sweet, but a great treat! We ordered a few differents things from the menu to share. Like the scallops that were delicious. The truffle fries were very good. We had a salad that had nice seasoning (can’t remember what it was). Then, we got some main plates. I got the salmon that was also great. A lot of different flavors. The desserts might have been actually my favorite thing of my experience, I really loved the tiramisu, the creme brulée and the bread pudding. Overall, the food was good, but nothing outstanding in my opinion. It was a great experience nonetheless, just not somewhere I would necessarily go back to. However, the desserts were really good and was a great way to end the meal!

Is advertised as a Tapas restaurant. Very nice decor that makes you feel under the see. Parking may be an issue. Use public transport if you can. The food was OK. Most probably won't be back.

Atmosphere is awesome. Food and cocktail were good! I ordered the black truffle old fashioned, and it was perfect. The lobster bisque was a lot thinner of a soup than I expected but still good. Dungeness crab ravioli sauce was tasty, but the ravioli were super flat. I was expecting them to have a bit more filling like traditional ravioli, I wish I could have tasted more of the crab and cheese, but the shrimp added in the dish made up for that a little.

We got the omakase which was 179 before tax and tip. They added an auto 20% gratuity which wasn’t disclosed anywhere that I saw. Place is small so we didn’t sit at the chefs counter but it was still good. Would recommend.

The roll and nigiri I had is just okay, sushi rice need to be seasoned, rice is kinda overcooked. Miso Soup need more touch of flavor , tea was delicious… restaurant is very tight, its small keep that in mind. Service was great.

I really wish I could give more than 3 stars because the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was even better. However, the service was lacking. Our waitress was very kind, as were the bartender and manager. But, they forgot to make/bring my husband's drink (twice) and mine (once). They also forgot to make/bring my entrée which was the most surprising. For the price point, the atmosphere was spot on, the food was close (late and a few sandy oysters), but the service needs elevation.

Excellent service and amazing atmosphere. The restaurant is just plain gorgeous and breathtaking. The food, while visually pleasing, is mediocre at best. Everything was under-seasoned. The seafood carbonara was absolutely not worth $35. The seared tuna was more in line with its $37 price tag, but again lacked flavor and was borderline bland. There's no Salt and Pepper at the table so forget trying to save any of the dishes. The cheapest glass of Cabernet is $20. They charge for bread. This place has so much potential. They've already nailed the 20% hospitality, I just hope they can dial in the flavors to seal the deal. As it stands, it's not worth the money.

Meh. Way too expensive for what it is. Udon soup was good but not great, and at that price I expected much better. I don’t like avocado and every roll on the menu has avocado. The staff was very nice, so no complaints there. But I would not go back.

Jade Jang

Quite deceptive nigiris for the price (paid $64 for 12 nigiris and miso soup). The quality of the fish and rice was soso, the selection of different fish types could have been better. The shape of nigiris was not made in a clean manner. Not a japanese-quality sushi place.

Michelle Q
Michelle Q

Awfully average at a premium price Came in excited, left bewildered. I ordered the premium nigiri set: 12 pieces for $70 before tax. The fish? Passably fresh, but not premium. Each piece sat atop a sad little blob of rice, noticeably smaller than traditional servings. It felt more like a sampler from someone still learning the ropes than a showcase of skill. The miso soup? Diluted to the point of existential crisis. Tasteless. Full stop. Add a pot of green tea and the bill crept just shy of $100 with tax and tip. I get it, this is SF. But for that price, you could have a transcendent sushi experience elsewhere. This was aggressively mediocre, and the value just isn’t there. Keep searching, folks this isn’t it.

L
Liane Yee

I picked this place solely for the decor and vibes. It was decorated extremely cute. The service was not attentive and the food was also subpar. We asked the steak to be medium rare but it came out well done. They brought out another one and it was blue rare. The octopus carpaccio was forgotten. It was my birthday and the server brought us free prosecco for toast which was a nice touch but given how long we waited for service each time, it couldn’t turn the experience around. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in years.

S
Suhani Sabharwal

PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. DO NOT ORDER WATER. DO NOT ASK FOR OLIVES. THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. We came here because the decor was beautiful and we had heard the food was good. It was absolutely NOT worth it. First, we asked for water and were automatically given still bottled water — no clarification, no warning — and later discovered we were charged $12 for basically three glasses of normal water. Then came the bread: greasy, stale, and honestly disappointing. The server asked if we wanted olives with it, which we naturally assumed were part of the bread service. Nope. $8… for olives. Completely unexpected. And it gets worse. The bill automatically included a mandatory 20% gratuity PLUS a 5% SF mandate fee, and somehow there’s still pressure to leave an additional tip on top of that. The pricing feels intentionally misleading. We expected to spend around $80. Instead, we walked out paying $140 because of hidden charges and add-ons no one clearly explained. The most frustrating part? The food itself was mediocre at best — genuinely something I could have made at home. Beautiful decor does not make up for deceptive pricing and underwhelming food. Save your money and go literally anywhere else.

I’m disappointed, I made a reservation for valentines day and when i reserved it gave me two options regular a la carte or the valentines day special $150 full course meal. I made the reservation weeks in advance for regular ala carte. When i showed up I was seated and handled the menu for the valentines day special, I mentioned to two waiters we didnt want to do the special, we want the regular menu, they told me that this was the only option available. I was ultimately force into it the special because all other restaurants in the area were completely booked up for dinner given is valentines day and I didnt my partner to embarrassedly walk out. I wish they communicated effectively before hand, and didnt make it an option to book regular ala carte. Beautiful place, great servers but was not worth $420 we ended up paying for.
