The atmosphere is authentic. The waiters are fast and the service is friendly. The dishes are beautifully presented. I enjoyed my lamb dish. The meat was tender and rare, just as I ordered. Delicious spotted beets in an appetizer with Mozzarella di Bufala. But the main thing is that sometimes these musicians play here with an amazing charismatic pianist. But whoever is lucky enough to hear this wonderful jazz music. I recommend.
This restaurant is really pretty inside. It has a sea theme decor. Aestheticly, you have nice sights everywhere you look. The ceiling is a deep blue color, and there's are jelly fish chandeliers hanging. Our waiter (so sorry I didn't get his name) was REALLY kind and attentive. The food was so good, steamy hot and fresh(ingredients) . We had delicious appetizers (fig toast, rice balls, and beet salad. It's all sharable while waiting on our main course. My branzino was delicious, crispy skin, tender meat (I usually have no sauces/gravy on top of my fish, but this one was so good. The side that came with it REALLY complimented the fish. My husband didn't care for the bacon that was wrapped around his scallops. He pulled it off. Overall, he felt that his dinner was average. We BOTH would go back again. This restaurant checked all of our boxes for a return vist.
We were looking for a different change of pace for food and went in right before happy hour was ending. This establishment has main courses also but we decided to go with tapas. For tapas we decided to get the Zucchini balls, lamb meatballs, oysters, tuna tartare, fig toast (add prosciutto after) the photo to add the salty sweet to this tapa and lastly pesto gnocchi. All the tapas were delicious and fresh. The lamb meatballs tasted more like a Mediterranean meatball and the figs are sweet so I would recommend adding the meat to this dish. Drinks were delicious also as I had the blueberry martini and a lemon drop. The staff were friendly and right on the service.
Perfect place to have dinner, especially if seeing a show at the SF Playhouse, which is right next door. There was a minor fluke with our reservation where it was showing on our phone but not in their system, but it was quickly resolved and we were sat at one of the tables along the bar area. Not the best table in terms of atmosphere due to the amount of traffic, but it was still a decent evening. Service was very friendly but lacked a bit of attentiveness. We had multiple people waiting on us so by the end of the night, we weren’t sure who our server was. This led to some delay in being able to place our order, as well as having to ask for things like refills and silverware. Despite a few setbacks during our visit, the food was great! We will definitely be back again when visiting the SF Playhouse.
Ula isn’t just a Mediterranean tapas and seafood restaurant—it’s a vibe. From the moment you peek through the window, you’re hooked. The interior? A whimsical blend of jellyfish-inspired lights and one-of-a-kind art. But keep walking—there’s more. I understand the tiles on the roof in the back room were salvaged from an old pool. The stories it could tell. What really made our visit unforgettable, though, was Casey. Part storyteller, part tapas magician, he curated a lunch that left us in awe. Every bite was perfection especially the grilled shrimp and truffle fries. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the Chambord Martini arrived. Boom. Showstopper.
My friends and I shared quite a few tapas plates. They were all very well plated and tasted delicious. Our favorite were the beef tartare, haloumi and fig toast. The service was great and the owner even walked around to thank guests for attending. We were lucky enough to also have a tour of the restaurant. I recommend this place 100%, don’t let the quiet atmosphere throw you off; it deserves to be busier.
We had our Anniversary dinner here 7/13 and what a memorable night as we were greeted at the door with exceptional service throughout the night by outstanding waiter Alex 🧜🏼♀️ at our new favorite European Spanish Mediterranean @ularestaurantsf !! Alex was funny and very humorous as he filled our evening with laughter. The restaurant is so big and the theme through is really historically nautical and ambiance is on point!! For apps we ordered Bruscetta and the Beats & Burrata (I like to order this any chance I get and it showed out and was phenominal if you‘ve never tried Beats & Burrata I urge you to try this light mozzarella like cheese fruit dish!) For entree I ordered Souris D’Agneau which is a roasted decadent “Lamb Shank” and my partner ordered the unique preparation of the Branzino fillet (it was not the whole fish if you are weird about looking at fish eye balls or picking through bones, no fear here!) It was a much more appealing presentation! For dessert we ordered the bread pudding which reminds me of Mexican Capirotada and was delicious and a rich and creamy Creme Brûlée that paired well with the 10yr Taylor Flagdate Porto Tawny. Please try each and everyone of these you will not be disappointed!! We look forward to our next visit and can’t wait to try more meals here! Please follow me on IG @venusverssace
Ula is an absolute must go! We went on an abnormally quiet Monday, but it gave us an opportunity to chat with Neeraj, the owner. He gave us a tour of the restaurant, its old Hollywood glamor and fantastic. Ample seating with private spaces. Our bartender served us fantastic martini's and wine. We did a few tapas, Octopus and the garlic shrimp and share the BRANZINO. Its so was crisp and delicious, we will be back to try more.
Delicious! We booked Ula in advance of our anniversary. They took good care of us, even offering a complimentary pair of champagne. The food was surprisingly delicious and everything done perfectly with attention to detail on the flavor as well as texture of the food. I highly recommend the gnocchi appitizer, scallop main, and Spritz drinks.
You will likely be enchanted by Ula Restaurant's nautical theme as I was when I went to Farallon Restaurant years ago. The friend who took me to Ula for Valentine's Day has the place dialed in and perfectly time to slip through a side door to the SF Playhouse without walking in the rain. The drinks and food were fabulous - just the right balance of crunchy, soft, savory and sweet. Enjoy a meal here! July 31, 2024 update: A friend and I had another great dinner here a few nights ago. What can I say? The service is fabulous and the food is excellent.
Strangely one of the best kept secrets in union square. Extremely talented bartender staff who will try any drink you ask for and are also quite creative. They are super friendly always willing to chat and have the benefit of working in a very beautiful restaurant. This restaurant space has evolved but it's still one of the more beautiful ones in San Francisco surveying great seafood and Tapas.
Wowza!!! This was a surprise hit in NYE afternoon. We were looking for a tapas bar near Union Square and we ended up here… MUCH TO OUR DELIGHT! It’s mainly French influenced cuisine with and extensive cocktail bar and a decor that feels like a Wonka meets Gaudi. (Jellyfish hanging lights?! 🤷♂️) The portions we small (similar to those in France) and the flavors were AMAZING!! And the cocktails were fab as well. Next time we’re in SF, we’ll likely make a bee-line right to Ula. Pricey, but worth every penny. NOTE: they build 20% gratuity into the tab, even for a party of 2. Took us off guard, so just so you know.
I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant during brunch. The food was absolutely delicious, and I really enjoyed sitting at the bar — the atmosphere was great and very comfortable. Our waitress, Marina, was extremely attentive and made me feel very welcome, giving me a lot of personal attention throughout the visit. The presentation of both the food and the dessert was outstanding — everything looked and tasted amazing. I truly enjoyed my time here and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!
I had the most wonderful first visit to Ula while traveling through San Francisco. We ordered the tuna steak, and it was absolutely divine – perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The entire menu felt so thoughtfully curated, and every bite was exceptional. The interior is stunning – sophisticated, warm, and inviting – making the whole experience even more special. The staff were attentive and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. I can’t wait to return on my next trip to San Francisco. Highly recommend Ula for anyone looking for exquisite food and a beautiful dining atmosphere!

Gorgeous place with very scrumptious food. We arrived early and we're promptly seated. The service was excellent. Had a lovely champagne cocktail with some fun appetizers, like chicken pasty, eggplant and crab cakes. Each dish was delicious and very well served. Dinner was branzino, salmon and scallops. The dishes were excellent, taste and presentation wise. Ended with a chocolate mousse. I loved the romantic vibe of this place. It was classy, the service was awesome with very thoughtful servers and the food was the best. Loved the sauces they used on the food as it had hints of mint and spices. Also many spots to click beautiful photos. Overall, a must visit.
spectacular food, beautiful ambiance, exceptional service. If you’re looking for an elevated yet comfortable dining experience in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square neighborhood, Ula is a winner from start to finish. Highly recommended.
Such a great restaurant. The ambiance is fantastic and the mosaic tile ceilings are gorgeous. Servers and management were very friendly and welcoming. Great appetizers, great dinner, great dessert. Prices are on the upper end but food quality is up to par and its also on par for similar places in the city. They support the arts and are highly recommend as a visit when you're in the city or if you are attending a show, check them out!
This place is a gem! The ambiance and decor are spectacular. Service was excellent, and food was very well prepared and delicious. The tapas format allowed us to pick and choose share a variety of items. The cocktail and wine list was also top notch.
🌟 Ula Restaurant - A True Gem in San Francisco! 🌟 I recently dined at Ula and had an absolutely incredible experience. From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the warm ambiance and chic decor, setting the perfect mood for a memorable evening. The food? Simply outstanding. Every dish was a delightful fusion of flavors – from the fresh, inventive appetizers to the beautifully presented main courses. The attention to detail in both taste and presentation was truly impressive. But what really made the night unforgettable was our waiter, Casey. Casey’s impeccable service and genuine enthusiasm elevated our dining experience to a whole new level. Attentive without being intrusive, he guided us through the menu with insightful recommendations and made us feel truly welcome. It’s rare to find someone who genuinely loves what they do, and it showed in every interaction. Ula is definitely a spot I’ll return to, not just for the amazing food but for the exceptional service. Huge thanks to Casey for making our lunch extra special! #SanFranciscoEats #UlaRestaurant #GreatService #FoodieFinds
We stopped in for an early “snack” and ended up staying for hours. Our waiter , Kacey, was both informative and friendly. Drinks were perfect and the food was amazing - that atmosphere was that of a Michelin Star restaraunt. Highly recommend the tuna tartar

An absolute gem of a restaurant! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was outstanding—fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Service was quick, the place was clean, and the overall vibe made me want to stay longer. Easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely be back!

We had our New Year’s Eve dinner at Ula and the food was BEYOND spectacular!!! We had the NYE prix fixe menu and everything was superb, from appetizers to dessert (probably the best bread pudding I have ever had!). Our server Bruce was delightful and made sure our evening was wonderful. The decor is beautiful and they had live instrumental music which made the evening even more special. The only thing keeping me from giving this restaurant a full 5 star review is the smoke coming from the kitchen, and making the entire restaurant smell like “steak”. I am all about an open kitchen concept, but for that to be successful, one must invest in state of the art exhaust systems so that the smoke and smell of food doesn’t overwhelm the dinning area. We left with our clothes smelling like food, and that was the only negative aspect of the experience. Otherwise, wonderful job!!!
Maybe I got there a little too early (7:00pm, Monday night) but the restaurant was completely dead, which is always unnerving. It might be because of the price, this place is expensive, even for the centre of town. Despite all that the food was excellent, and the service equally good. I'd go back with a bigger party and sample more of the menu.
Ula Restaurant offers a captivating theme atmosphere that enhances the dining experience. The appetizers were a delight, bursting with flavor love the Hummus Plate. Yet, the croquettes and arancini, shaped like balls, lacked visual variety. Adding distinct shapes and more accompaniment sauces could elevate the overall experience by introducing a richer tapestry of flavors.
20% service fee for all customers, excellent service, eye-catching interior, decent food. The filet of beef was served in a strange soup plate with very very long edges that made it a little hard to eat. Everything was cooked well but there was a bit too much sauce. The chocolate truffle mousse was great. I didn't have seafood but that's what they specialize in. Why four stars: There are similar restaurants with nice interiors that don't tack on a 20% service fee for all customers regardless of party size. Look elsewhere first. The plating for the steak was really strange. Also, I noticed that some of the ceiling lights weren't working and one was flickering.
The atmosphere and decoration of this restaurant is definitely one of a kind. The original lamps and decorations make you think you are under the sea. Our waiter was really kind and nice. The drink I got was a non-alcoholic one - I can’t remember the name and couldn’t find it on online menu, but it was delicious. Definitely sweet, but a great treat! We ordered a few differents things from the menu to share. Like the scallops that were delicious. The truffle fries were very good. We had a salad that had nice seasoning (can’t remember what it was). Then, we got some main plates. I got the salmon that was also great. A lot of different flavors. The desserts might have been actually my favorite thing of my experience, I really loved the tiramisu, the creme brulée and the bread pudding. Overall, the food was good, but nothing outstanding in my opinion. It was a great experience nonetheless, just not somewhere I would necessarily go back to. However, the desserts were really good and was a great way to end the meal!
Is advertised as a Tapas restaurant. Very nice decor that makes you feel under the see. Parking may be an issue. Use public transport if you can. The food was OK. Most probably won't be back.
Atmosphere is awesome. Food and cocktail were good! I ordered the black truffle old fashioned, and it was perfect. The lobster bisque was a lot thinner of a soup than I expected but still good. Dungeness crab ravioli sauce was tasty, but the ravioli were super flat. I was expecting them to have a bit more filling like traditional ravioli, I wish I could have tasted more of the crab and cheese, but the shrimp added in the dish made up for that a little.

My mother and I recently had dinner here. I felt the lighting was a bit too dim. I understand that it was part of the atmosphere, but it was a bit tough to read the menu. The food was delicious. We shared the crabcakes for an appetizer. For the main course, I had the fillet of beef and she had the branzino. We had the profiteroles for dessert. There were only two on the plate and I felt that was a bit stingy. The service was not as good. It took a long time to get our drink order because it looked as if there were problems with the computer and we think the server had expected someone else to get them instead because he asked if we had gotten them yet. The same thing happened again when we got dessert. He came up asking if we'd gotten them.
We went to this restaurant for my Birthday, based on a recommendation. Overall, it could have been fine. But first, they seated us at the most uncomfortable table, accessible only from one side, and we were with our baby in a stroller. We asked to change tables. The interior was covered in dust that our baby had collected wherever he could. Dirty plates weren't cleared from the table until we asked. But the worst part was that they didn't tell us that the bill included a 20% tip plus an extra 5% for something. So, when my husband paid, he thought everything was fine because he was busy with the baby and I was away, but when I checked the receipt at home, it turned out we'd left a 45% tip!! It's an unjustifiable nightmare. We've never eaten so expensive anywhere, and I must say, the food was just average.
Nice restaurant with a good atmosphere. We had a group reservation so we were offered the group menu which was 3 course. Food was ok, not amazing, and frankly disappointing for a 120$ meal.
Maybe overall a B+ as a restaurant, but for the price a C+. Once fancy decor that's outdated and a little broken down. Food that isn't bad, but would be what I would expect the you randomly shopped for ingredients at Whole Foods and had staff from the Cheesecake Factory kitchen assemble it. Cocktails that were okay, but artless. Service with a smile, nothing bad to say on that count. I didn't go hungry, but I'd never recommend this place to anyone.
Service was fantastic. Every server was helpful and kind. The ambiance was not good. Old music, mismatched decor, but not in a good way. Too open concept. The food was okay but over priced.
I really wish I could give more than 3 stars because the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was even better. However, the service was lacking. Our waitress was very kind, as were the bartender and manager. But, they forgot to make/bring my husband's drink (twice) and mine (once). They also forgot to make/bring my entrée which was the most surprising. For the price point, the atmosphere was spot on, the food was close (late and a few sandy oysters), but the service needs elevation.
Excellent service and amazing atmosphere. The restaurant is just plain gorgeous and breathtaking. The food, while visually pleasing, is mediocre at best. Everything was under-seasoned. The seafood carbonara was absolutely not worth $35. The seared tuna was more in line with its $37 price tag, but again lacked flavor and was borderline bland. There's no Salt and Pepper at the table so forget trying to save any of the dishes. The cheapest glass of Cabernet is $20. They charge for bread. This place has so much potential. They've already nailed the 20% hospitality, I just hope they can dial in the flavors to seal the deal. As it stands, it's not worth the money.

The menu looks great but it is the most disappointing meal I have ever had in SF. The service was awful: we got our bottle of wine halfway through the meal and it wasn’t the wine we ordered. The waiter then had to run to get glasses. The portions are teeny tiny for the high price tag and the paella was really terrible. Everything in that dish was overcooked and tasted old. I really can’t remember a more lackluster experience that I’ve had in the last 5+ years. I would never come back here and now I understand why they had so many open reservations.
The price of the food at this restaurant I would’ve expected better. The service was good. Be prepared for a mandatory 20% tip for two people. On top of that they add on a service fee. They use the excuse that it helps them tip the staff. I don’t know why they don’t just include the menu prices. Management dysfunction. We made reservations and they put us in the bar not in the dining room. Very very disappointing. Didn’t even ask us.
The gentleman that was in charge of “the floor” for Christmas service was for certain profiling reservations + as such, where people were sat in the restaurant. $562 for x2 people later…it was not at all worth it. Very disappointed with our Christmas dinner “experience”. Server tried her best. But it didn’t at all make up for what the person who was seating reservations was clearly doing all night. They ran out of the Brazino by 719pm when it was a set menu…
7-22-22 I have to say that I am shocked at how terrible the experiences have become. I have been at the restaurant more than a dozen times and it is no longer worth visiting. Most recently, I sat at the bar and literally had to beg for service 2 hours before close. They served their coworkers, and the "bartender" made his own drink, but couldn't give is the time of day. We asked for a bottle of water and he said "here you go." Didn't open it, didn't pour it, just sat it down and left. The quality of food has become sub par, the service absolutely terrible. Do not recommend. Pictures are of multiple people hanging out without helping and the "bartender" and his drink, empty glasses, and an unopened bottle of water.
We chose this place because of its design and rating. The atmosphere and decor are truly beautiful, and the lady who welcomed us at the entrance was very kind. However, the cocktail we ordered was really disappointing, and the food was unfortunately below expectations. The service was also quite poor. Only one blonde lady who served us was polite and attentive — she was genuinely kind and helpful. On the other hand, one of the waiters spoke to us very rudely, even leaning on our table while talking. Despite the venue’s lovely ambiance, both the service and the food quality were well below average. I do appreciate that the items we didn’t like were removed from the bill, which was a thoughtful gesture.
DO NOT VISIT! Terrible restaurant at an unreasonable price. It looked pretty great from the photos and some good reviews but it really isn’t worth it. The food is mediocre if even that and the price of it is beyond ridiculous for what you’re receiving. I had 3 dishes (Tomatoes and Burrata, Tuna Aguachile, Beef Carpaccio) and not a single one was more than ok. The atmosphere had no music which also wasn’t great but I can look past that. The service was in effect “here’s your food” and that’s about it (not actually - I’m being a tad dramatic) - then for the bill there’s an effective 25% service charge (5% to pay for the SF Mandate & 20% Mandated that would be hard and awkward to argue against) which is completely unjust. $120 for what we received was just very poor. I won’t feel sorry if I hear the place runs out of business. Good luck to them 👍🏼
Went for an anniversary dinner. Asked for a glass of “house” Chardonnay. Didn’t know which it was but when I tasted it I really didn’t like it. I told our waitress (all of the waitstaff were surly but more on that). That prompted the general manager to come to our table and proceed to tell me how great a wine it was, from Napa, etc. While I appreciated the I unrequested tutorial, I still didn’t like it. I requested a different glass which I received. Much to my dismay, after checking the bill when I got home (yes, we should have in the moment but didn’t) they charged for BOTH glasses. One was $25 & the other $15. In addition there was a $12 charge for STILL WATER!!!! As well as a bread charge. As for the service & atmosphere…. It appeared no one liked their job, very unfriendly, not an upbeat atmosphere at all. Not looking for a party, just people at least being friendly. My husband has been in the restaurant business all his life and the demeanor of the staff is so important to setting the atmosphere. Never will return…. for so many reasons.
PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. DO NOT ORDER WATER. DO NOT ASK FOR OLIVES. THIS PLACE IS A SCAM. We came here because the decor was beautiful and we had heard the food was good. It was absolutely NOT worth it. First, we asked for water and were automatically given still bottled water — no clarification, no warning — and later discovered we were charged $12 for basically three glasses of normal water. Then came the bread: greasy, stale, and honestly disappointing. The server asked if we wanted olives with it, which we naturally assumed were part of the bread service. Nope. $8… for olives. Completely unexpected. And it gets worse. The bill automatically included a mandatory 20% gratuity PLUS a 5% SF mandate fee, and somehow there’s still pressure to leave an additional tip on top of that. The pricing feels intentionally misleading. We expected to spend around $80. Instead, we walked out paying $140 because of hidden charges and add-ons no one clearly explained. The most frustrating part? The food itself was mediocre at best — genuinely something I could have made at home. Beautiful decor does not make up for deceptive pricing and underwhelming food. Save your money and go literally anywhere else.
I’m disappointed, I made a reservation for valentines day and when i reserved it gave me two options regular a la carte or the valentines day special $150 full course meal. I made the reservation weeks in advance for regular ala carte. When i showed up I was seated and handled the menu for the valentines day special, I mentioned to two waiters we didnt want to do the special, we want the regular menu, they told me that this was the only option available. I was ultimately force into it the special because all other restaurants in the area were completely booked up for dinner given is valentines day and I didnt my partner to embarrassedly walk out. I wish they communicated effectively before hand, and didnt make it an option to book regular ala carte. Beautiful place, great servers but was not worth $420 we ended up paying for.
I picked this place solely for the decor and vibes. It was decorated extremely cute. The service was not attentive and the food was also subpar. We asked the steak to be medium rare but it came out well done. They brought out another one and it was blue rare. The octopus carpaccio was forgotten. It was my birthday and the server brought us free prosecco for toast which was a nice touch but given how long we waited for service each time, it couldn’t turn the experience around. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in years.
I made a reservation for two at Ula for 14th of January. Unfortunately, this also happened to be during the JP Morgan conference. The morning of the 13th it became clear that I would not be able to go into the city for dinner on the 14th. I called the restaurant right away to let them know (more than 24 hours in advance) and also sent an email to their team explaining the situation. To be fair to them, there was a clear cancellation fee of $50 a person when I booked, but I was surprised by their response on the phone and in their email reply when I requested an exception and a refund. They were quite rude and there was no understand or flexibility. I had hoped at the very least there would have been some human empathy and at best I could receive the deposit back due to the advance notice and unforeseen circumstances.
