The dim sum here was very good. I had Pork Siu Mai dumplings, the Peking Duck with buns, and Green Beans with Garlic. For drinks I had some tea. The service was very good here too. It is a place I would return to.
Right next to Portsmouth Square. Almost nondescript, but open a dark door and a beautiful space appears. Prompt seating, comfortable seating. Big menu with lots of choices besides dim sum. Every dish we ordered was excellent, hot from the kitchen. Plaudits for their turnip cake, so meaty! Attentive service, very good prices. Enjoy!
Nestled amid the vibrant streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown, this dim sum restaurant offers a truly elevated dining experience that honors tradition while delivering exceptional quality and service. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere feels both inviting and refined — a seamless blend of classic charm and modern polish. The duck here is nothing short of extraordinary — crisp, golden skin giving way to tender, flavorful meat that’s perfectly seasoned and expertly prepared. The soup dumplings are delicate and artful, each one filled with a rich, savory broth that captures the essence of authentic dim sum craftsmanship. Service is another standout. The staff are gracious, attentive, and knowledgeable, striking just the right balance between warmth and professionalism. Each dish arrives with thoughtful timing and presentation. In a neighborhood filled with culinary treasures, this spot manages to rise above — not through flash, but through consistency, care, and excellence. Whether you’re a local seeking your new go-to or a visitor hoping for a quintessential Chinatown dining experience, this is a destination that embodies the spirit and sophistication of San Francisco’s dim sum scene.
City View is a clean and inviting spot in the heart of Chinatown with a lovely interior that feels calm and welcoming. The staff are friendly and the service is impressively fast, which makes for a smooth and enjoyable dining experience. The standout dish for me was the stuffed eggplant and tofu is cooked in an absolutely delicious sauce that’s easily one of the best I’ve ever had. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The beef rice noodle roll was average in comparison, but still a decent bite. They also serve complimentary tea, which is thoughtfully brewed and hits the spot it is warm, fragrant, and well-balanced. Another highlight was the Shanghai Siu Lung Bao. Each dumpling comes in a tiny foil tray, and when you bite into it, the soup bursts in your mouth. Incredibly flavorful and top-notch quality, definitely 5 stars for that alone. Prices are reasonable, and it’s a great place to sit back, chat with friends, and enjoy a variety of small bites. Highly recommended if you’re exploring Chinatown!
This restaurant was amazing!!! Delicious authentic Chinese cuisine!!! Their assortment of dim sum was soooo good! The roasted duck was the juiciest perfect duck I have eaten in my life! I know it seems exaggerated but, its the truth! The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. I met a lady who might have been the manager name Lily and she was the sweetest and friendly lady. I definitely recommend this dimsum spot and I promise you will not regret it!!! 😊
After walking around Chinatown, around 11:30 we stopped in for some authentic dim sum which was delicious. Inside the place was very tranquil and relaxing. Even when it started getting busier for lunch it was still not noisy. Service was great and attentive but not interfering. Efficiently bringing our various dim sum dishes and refilling our water. They had a printout of the dishes ordered at the end of the table and would check off when it was placed on the table. We chose 2 orders of Shrimp Dumplings, 2 of Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, 1 of Pork Siu Mai, 2 of Green Onion Pancake, 1 of Pork Potstickers, 1 of Veg Egg Rolls, 1 Black Bran Spareribs, 1 Sesame Ball with Red Bean Paste and 2 Hot Teas. Each order usually consisted of 3-4 items per basket. The dumplings, pork buns, pot stickers and siu mai were tender and tasty! The onion pancakes and egg rolls were very crispy and delicious! We nicely finished it off with a Sesame Ball with Red Bean Paste. They were nicely sweet and reminded me when I used to go to Chinatown for dim sum with my family back home. Great food, service and atmosphere! Worth a visit!
This is the freshest dim sum I have ever had! We were a group of 4 adults and arrived at 11:30am on a Friday. (We parked in the garage across the street by the cultural center) we were sat immediately. By the time we left around 1:00pm, it looked like all the tables were occupied! Food: again, the freshest tasting I’ve ever had. Every dish we had was perfection. My parents, who enjoy dim sum in Chinatown over the years, agree. We ordered: the shrimp shumai (PACKED with shrimp), the scallion pancakes (light and crispy, not dense), Peking duck with lotus bun (amazing especially with the plum sauce), taro dumpling (so savory), BBQ pork char sui bao (steamed only because, baked didn’t appear on the menu. My favorite and did not disappoint), short ribs, garlic green beans, liu sha bao/custard bao (sweet and delicious), chicken fried bao, lo bak go/turnip cake (SO GOOD), chicken wings, pork dumplings (just crispy enough), and jasmine tea. Service: fast, efficient, attentive and friendly. The food came out as it was ready and the staff “checked off” what had been delivered from our order. I’m used to the dim sum places where the servers walk around pushing carts with all the food on them, you select what you want, and then the mark a card as you purchase items. I appreciated this style of food service because we could order all at once up front, then focus on eating rather than hunting for more. Price: for 4 adults, all the food above (~16 dishes), with 22% tip came to ~$50/person. We ordered two of some dishes if 3 pieces were in the order. There were only a few leftovers, and they do provide small to-go boxes and a bag if needed.
Every bite was delicious! The Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll is made in heaven and brought down to our plates for our enjoyment alongside the perfectly cooked Turnip Cake, Steamed Custard Lava Buns, Shanghai Siu Lung Bao, Duck Bao, Chinese Broccoli with Oyster sauce, all faster and more delicious than expected. Finish with the sesame balls filled with red bean paste... Amazing meal. Plus the manager, Vincent, made us feel at home.
Delicious dim sum restaurant with multiple levels. Conveniently located right outside one of the Portsmouth Plaza parking lot exits. They serve a variety of traditional dishes that one can order off the menu or as servers are passing by. Flavors were quite good. Their turnip cake is sublime and perfectly crispy. Their rice noodle rolls had good texture and their lava custard buns were a little on the runny side, but still good. While on the pricier side, it's pretty good for being in SF. They will charge you for tea
I felt very much reminded of China here! We ate here twice. The food was great and very authentic! They have a picture menu which helps you decide. The location is pretty cool, some sort of industrial design combined with diner boots and chinese flair. The stuff is very fast and the food came quick. There can be a waiting line. So this is also no place to hangout longer. Eat your food and go, as it is in China.
Oh man, what a great meal. Our son (who lives in Berkeley) frequents this place. We hit it for lunch while in SF today. Tried 9 different dishes and all were great...I mean really great. Very nice and modern restaurant. Service was good, but classic non-interactive Chinese service. I can't say enough about the food.
Dim sum restaurant in China town with thoughtful Chinese decor, having both Chinese and Non Chinese Clientele. It has some special dim sum dishes like Peking duck, crab claws, both delicious. The dim sum is good: the cilantro rice roll is a bit thick with limited cilantro, the scallop siu mai is a bit plain , the shrimp egg roll is very good. If you are in China town, this is worthy a visit.
Atmosphere is better than most of the Chinatown dim sum restaurants . Food is better than the average except the peking duck which was really a roast duck and not peking duck. Think : roast duck plus a bun. Service was efficient but not friendly. It was approaching please-do-not-bother-me level.
I thought the food was pretty good for the most part but a little pricey for dim sum. My favorite thing though was the garlic green beans, omg so addictive and perfectly crisp and flavorful. The scallop shumai and stuffed eggplant and tofu were very good. Taro puffs were just ok imo. Restaurant was clean and the service was great.
Dimsum place next to Portmorth parking garage in China town. This restaurant spellcialized in peking duck. They only serve dinner Friday and Saturday. Other days just lunch. We arrived around 1 pm and there are people waiting. The restaurant interior is nice. Menu is simple for dimsum. The dimsum dishes are commonly found in all dimsum place. We ordered lo mai kai, string bean, XO rice noodle, chicken feet, fried glutinous ball, and pan fry turnip. The order was ready pretty quickly. The dishes are ok. The highlight is the green beans for me. The rest are average. The XO rice roll is a bit too sweet. Pricewise may be on the higher side as this is Chinatown where you can get cheaper dimsum somewhere else. We cannot really compare as this is restaurant and other cheaper dimsum place around Chinatown is not as nice as this one. One thing that I am not aware of is there is 5% mandatory charge which I never aware of. If you gave 15% , it is like you give 20% granularity.
I was starving and looking for soup dumplings. I found this place on Google Maps. I got two items. The soup dumplings and the Peking Duck buns. They were equally disappointing. The soup dumplings had not flavor and no soup. The Peking Duck felt more like HK style roast duck, with no crisp on the duck, but fatty. It was disappointing because I was in the middle of Chinatown. I expected better. The service was quick and fast. I spent $27.50 for two dishes and a pot of tea. Don't recommend and not worth the price at all. Go to other neighborhoods like Irving Street for better, more authentic Chinese food!
