One of the best hole in the wall spots that you’ll find in San Francisco - definitely come here with a group of friends/family where you can try out a whole bunch of options because everything is delicious. I’d highly recommend the oxtail since that was my favorite dish here.

The paella fell a bit short for me—the flavor profile didn’t quite land, and they’re using an alternate grain instead of traditional bomba rice. That said, the almejas, chorizo, gambas, and mejillones were excellent, and absolutely worth ordering. Despite the paella miss, this is still one of the more authentically Spanish spots in the city, and I’ll definitely be back to explore the rest of the menu. In my experience, most places around here struggle with paella—there simply aren’t many Spanish chefs—but I appreciate that this kitchen aims for the real thing. Definitely miss zarzuela.

First time having Paella. My girl recommended so we took advantage. It was great. We had left overs and ate them today. Still amazing. The wine was strong. The bread soft. The papas bravas were amazing (her favorite).

When we want to visit another country, the first thing that comes to mind is to enjoy its culinary gastronomy. I have had the opportunity to visit Spain and learn about its culture and food, to be able to give a humble opinion. Esperpento, is a nice place, with very attractive decorations, the music is not typical Spanish music, perhaps because most of the clientele is not. Their food is not with the authentic Spanish flavor, however, it has good taste. The prices are a bit high but the ingredients they use in their food taste of good quality. The attention is good, a good service which could say that the issues of prices you pay for service and quality of ingredients. Unfortunately, I had very high expectations since I wanted to try again that unique Spanish flavor that makes you feel like you are in Spain again! You can go try Esperpento, it's not a bad option, but it's not that food that reflects the beautiful and delicious Spain!

Spanish fare comes alive in the Mission district with really good paella and sangria. Exceptional tapas at Esperpento, with classic and authentic flavors. The meatballs were braised to perfection as was the garlic chicken. Their brava sauce is on point and it’s served with some fresh bread. Now let’s talk about the best ham in the world. Their Iberico is of the highest quality and they don’t shy away with quantity too. Very good. The squid ink paella had all the flavors a awesome paella should have. An especially nice little ting from the fresh squid ink on this rice dish. Perfect. And of course they had a rocking sangría with the perfect amount of fruit and wine. It’s perfect for a hot day. So, if you find yourself in the Mission and want some good Spanish food you owe it to yourself to give this place a shot. Muy beuno.

The food was OK. It was moderately priced and the portions were pretty big. This meal cost $65 including tip and something similar in New York City would cost about double that. Service was a bit slow and lackluster which is probably what cost this place a full 5 star review. It also looked much cooler on the outside than it did on the inside. I'd give it 4 stars which isn't a bad review by any means but it is not a perfect 5 if that's what you're looking for. Pictured is the lobster paella, blood sausage (morcilla) and Jamon Serrano.
