This place has amazing Swiss vibes and decor and a lovely selection of cheese, beef, and chocolate fondue. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive and provided helpful information on the menu, utensils, and cooking times. Saw families with kids and couples on dates. They have an optional prefix menu Wednesday and Thursdays. Would recommend!

A gem from old San Francisco. The wood paneling is imported from Switzerland. Ditto the decor. They have exclusive French and Swiss cheeses and bake their own sourdough for the fondue. There’s also pickled vegetables, apple slices and pretzels for the fondue. Authentic and affordable wines. Patient and attentive staff. Step in, get lost, and forget you’re on Van Ness. This Palace of fondue should be recognized alongside House of Prime Rib as Old SF. I hope it remains as sleepy and intimate for another 40 years!

Sorry for bad photos, I was just too excited about the cheese to prioritize. Ok if you want to feel like a Swiss skier, straight off the lift, cold and hungry, ready for cheese! This is that place. It’s super authentic and basically transports you to Switzerland. The food alone is very rich, I mean, it’s just melted cheese. Regardless though, it’s amazing! If you have to get anything, get the French onion soup, that was the star. I’d love to come back and try the pretzels and schnitzel too! 🇨🇭🫕🧀 the service was also great too! Very friendly and helpful. Thanks Matterhorn 🏔

Wonderful ambiance, helpful service, and great food! Tucked away on a cute corner of Van Ness, this restaurant offers great Swiss dishes including four distinct cheese fondues. The interior is an extremely cute Alpine village with beautiful wood paneling and much Swiss paraphernalia. It brings an exotic angle to the place. Definitely recommend!

Super unique experience, friendly staff and good food! It’s not everyday you get to dip carbs into melted cheese in San Francisco, so I enjoyed it!

The staff were SO nice, the decor is adorable and fun, and the food was delicious! We tried the raclette (classic, so of course we had to) and the schnitzel. So tasty. We want to go back just for some wine and dessert fondue. Definitely a great date place. We absolutely loved it.

This is a truly wonderful experience with delicious, authentic Swiss food. They cook the fondue with white wine and Kirsch--if you find that it tastes or smells too boozy, try having them cook the fondue with no Kirsch and half of the white wine. It's just as delicious and should be more enjoyable for those who are sensitive to alcohol flavors and scents.

I sat at the bar and had an amazing service from Jonathan. I tried the French onion soup, the raclette appetizer, and the Ementel fondue. The wine selection is simple but good and the ambience is very inviting. Great food and experience overall.

What a delightful place. The food is delicious, the ambiance reminded us a lot of actual places in Switzerland, and the Euro-style service was great, too. A place to feel like you’re in Europe while in SF.

Had some cheese fondue and a couple of other dishes and we all liked what we got. The chocolate fondue for dessert was perfect to share. Adorable, Alpine setting (wooden tables and benches, good beer selection) and check out the huge diorama out the back windows!

Fantastic experience. Got the gondola for our anniversary dinner celebration. Got the raclette, onion soup, beef and cheese fondue, and s’mores chocolate fondue. Excellent service, to the point it scraping the bottom of our fondue pot so we could get the crusty cheese. Delicious meal (better seasoned and yummier than the Melting Pot). Great ambiance with the little details of the wooden walls and the mountain out the window with the train. Thank you for making this special!

The authentic atmosphere at this place and the start is very friendly and helpful. Best of all... The food is really yummy. The signature cheese fondue but also the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes... Really really yummy.

Chocolate fondue is a must and the perfect way to end the meal! Also loved the rösti and pretzel. Server was super nice and the decor/ ambiance was cozy and well-done. Made a reservation since we were a group of 7 but there was plenty of seating available on a Thursday evening.

We were lucky enough to attend a soft re-opening of Matterhorn, which is officially re-opening to the public on September 24, 2019. While we never went to Matterhorn prior to it closing last year, we were incredibly impressed with the food, service, and overall ambiance of the newly-renovated restaurant. I highly recommend the cheeseboard, raclette, and charcuterie board! All of them were well prepared and presented beautifully. Definitely don't miss out on the s'mores fondue at the end - it was a fantastic way to end the meal. Don't miss out on Matterhorn - we loved every bit of it and will be back soon!

Went a few weeks ago with my partner and we had probably the best service with the tastiest food. I wish we got our waiters name she was the best and so helpful my partner never had fondue before so we had a ton of questions on how to have the best experience here and we got it ! The meat and cheese plate was out of this world we still dream about it !

My new favorite restaurant in SF! I loved the atmosphere (you totally feel like you are in the mountains in Europe), the staff was great and the food was amazing! My hudband and I shared the "moitié moitié" cheese fondue and the beef fondue. We also got the s'more fondue. Everything was delicious. The homemade bread is fabulous too! As for drinks, try the sour ale, it is very well balanced. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We went to Matterhorn for dinner on a weekday and were very impressed with the ambiance ,the service and the food. To begin with the ambiance is very cozy yet upbeat. They have a gondola with a table for 2 ,which is one of the many intricate cute things at this restaurant. The wall decor and typical swiss artifacts sprawled in the wooden dining area gives it a very authentic swiss like feeling. Our server ,Oliver was very friendly and made perfect suggestions and recommendations. We ordered their moitie moitie fondue, it had an amazing taste though the kirsch was a bit too strong flavored for me. I guess next time, I will order the fondue without the kirsch (that's an option they offer). The Raclette came with swiss and French cheese along with mostarda, perfect combo of sweet and savory. Our favorite was the beef fondue with thyme potatoes, very flavorful and quite filling. For dessert we had their homemade ice cream and their todays bakery special, pie with cranberry ice cream. They have a good wine selection, our favorite was their dessert wine, orange blossom Moscato. I would like to mention their manager, Sheila, who took the time out to talk to us and made us feel welcomed. We will surely go back here to try other fondues. I highly recommend this place for your cheese cravings.

Diving into the heart of Swiss tradition, this fondue restaurant transports you straight to Switzerland with its cozy ambiance and an impressive variety of cheeses and fondue types. From the moment you dip your first piece of bread into the velvety cheese, the experience is nothing short of magical. Fear not, no fondue journey is complete without indulging in the decadent chocolate fondue, a perfect finale that leaves you wishing the dipping could go on forever. A truly delightful experience that makes you feel more in Swiss than ever.

We were visiting San Francisco over the weekend to see the seals and try the famous sourdough bread when we stumbled upon these lovely young swiss gentlemen who told us to come visit their delightful eatery. So blessed to have been graced by such splendid and delightful company. They convinced us to try everything. Thank you Estefan and Zachary (:

A super delicious and unique spot in San Francisco! When we walked in we were a little nervous because of the strong cheesy flavor. But after we got our cheese fondue and beef fondue, we couldn’t be happier. I really recommend sticking to the fondues. The beef was incredibly soft and tender. Absolutely melts in your mouth. The cheese fondue is also fantastic! Next time we will ask for more bread and fewer potatoes. Overall a wonderful, romantic, and fun date spot! Also keto and low carb friendly because they have pickled vegetables you can dip in the cheese and the beef fondue.

We loved this place! Definitely a memorable meal. The photos don’t do the interior justice. It’s so well-designed and decorated. We enjoyed the fondue for two and were stuffed before dessert could come. We had planned to get chocolate fondue, but changed plans and got the ice cream special to eat there (wow) and the tarte to take with us. The train village out the windows is so cute and the atmosphere was pretty and relaxing. Servers were super kind and took care regarding COVID. We had planned to sit in the gondola, but my husband is 6'4" and the seating doesn't allow for that much leg room. Any seat in the place is simply lovely.

This place made dinner SO special. Every corner of the restaurant has some cute and Swiss-centric design touch, down to the diorama mountains in the back windows. Welcome/dessert tasters made this feel like a five star experience, along with so much else. Definitely recommend the raclette dinner, which I’ve never seen served personal fondue cooking style before!

This review is long overdue! My partner have been coming to Matterhorn for the past few years for special occasions and date nights. We absolutely love coming here. For our most recent visit this weekend, we brought a group of 10 people for one of our birthdays. Our server Thomas was wonderful; we definitely needed help figuring out how to make this kind of dining experience work for a large group and his suggestions (quantities) were PERFECT. Not too much, not too little, just right/perfect amounts for our group... He was attentive and helpful, all while the restaurant was very busy overall. All of our friends loved their experience so we're extremely grateful to Thomas, manager Sheila, and all other team members who made our birthday experience special! And, thank you for seating us next to the train display (we love the cute model train setup towards the back wall) :)

I think it's the best place to go in San Francisco if you want to eat Switzerland food. 🇨🇭 The atmosphere is perfect, that's a calm place with very good ambiant music. Then, people are really kind. I'm still in shock at how much I enjoyed my experience this evening at the Matterhorn Restaurant. I've known of this restaurant since the 90s when I would visit my cousin who lived on Van Ness and Greenwich. I'd walk past the Matterhorn thinking, that's an interesting name but never intrigued enough to visit. I recall my cousin telling me that he had a drink at the bar and the restaurant had lots of wood in its design. Okay..... not interested. Almost 35 years later, my wife says that she'd like to take our mom's to the Matterhorn Restaurant. I was like, "That place on Van Ness???". We typically visit some "fancy" restaurants in the City. We enjoy treating our moms to new experiences. I didn't object to her choice, but silently felt that she made a mistake. The UBER dropped us outside the front doors, and moments later, I remembered what it was to be like a young man growing up in SF. This restaurant brought back the charm and sophistication of the previous century. It all happened from the moment I opened the front door. It was the light scent of cheese that struck my senses. Then I noticed how well the lobby was lit and unobstructed. Old restaurants tend to have lots of stuff from the past. Like visiting an elder family members home. Maybe I was expecting that? Then we entered the restaurant and I was smitten. We were seated. The entire restaurant was designed in polished white wood. Not stained or painted. Polished wood EVERYWHERE. Our dinner reservation was early. This was important because the windows at the back of the restaurant allowed the gorgeous diffused sunlight to shine the polished wood lighting up this beautiful and entirely unique San Francisco dining experience. Coincidentally, I visited Switzerland last year. This restaurant truly made me feel as if i had been transported to the Alps. This may be the cleanest and most tidy restaurant that I've even visited. Where we sat in didn't see a speck of dust. It felt too clean. It felt so "Switzerland". Like a fine-tuned Swiss timepiece. Okay, the food was also very good. Our group of nine had two fondue bowls with several dishes to share. Our server was enthusiastic and communicated impeccably. She was a gem and is an absolute asset to the restaurant. The Matterhorn is one of the hidden gems of the San Francisco restaurant scene. Break away from the modern and trendy restaurants and step into something so unique. It's not 90s. It's not Euro. It's so Swiss.

Still exactly what it’s always been and even a little better ! I’ve been coming here on and off for years and visited this week for date night with the hubby after a hiatus. We both absolutely loved our food, emphasis on how FRESH everything tasted including crisp salad greens and perfect bread. I sometimes worry in a slower economy that food won’t be as fresh but Matterhorn is keeping everything top notch! We had the super sharp cheese fondue followed by the beef with different sauces, all delightful. I will also mention that I love the music, playing jazz is a great neutral that I feel is romantic and most people can enjoy. Thanks for the awesome culinary experience and lovely atmosphere. Our server was also really informative and explained the menu to us when we had specific questions, especially about which fondue to pick because frankly they all sounded amazing. At the end of our meal we were presented with an adorable plate of complementary cookies. I really feel like the value is great here for the type of experience you get. Can’t wait to come back soon!

This was a beautiful place. Super cute decor, music that keeps you in a certain chill/relaxed vibe. Sarah was my server and she was super attentive and lovely and recommended a super good red wine (Gigondas) and was just fabulous. Ask her to tell you how she saved her customers’ lives. ;) I got a Hefe, the red, the “Ulalal” fondue with a side of sausage and the nusstorte. The fondue was very flavorful but still light. It was exactly what I expected. The Nusstorte was everything I hoped for! Perfectly nutty with a hint of sweet. I boxed the last three bites! No lie. I can’t wait to visit again. :)

We had a lovely experience! The food, service, and ambiance were all wonderful. We ordered four cheese fondues (all great), several desserts, wine, and beer, and all of it was delicious. I especially recommend asking about their seasonal homemade ice cream: we had a ginger cucumber ice cream that was so refreshing and unique.

Very cute restaurant with lots of decor that will remind you of Swiss! I got Moitie Moitie cheese fondue (served with homemade bread and yummy potatoes), veal, and onion soup. Both veal and onion soup were great, but the fondue was too alcohol-heavy for me. I also highly recommend s’more fondue!

In terms of customer service, this place is 5 stars. The atmosphere is 4, the smell of cheese is very pungent and the food experience a 3 star. Most of what you enjoy in terms of the sliced cheese and cured meats can be found in deli shops and at Whole Foods. Trying the Fondue with chunks of bread and potato was a great experience. We ordered a white wine truffle fondue and for our group it felt overpowered we didn’t enjoy the cheese experience as other ingredients were too strong. The manager offered our table a complementary chocolate cake and it was greatly appreciated. Not sure if there are other Swiss places in the city but it’s peeking at to see if you would like to experience it.

I really enjoyed the food and I thought it was an excellent value. I got fondue with sides and apples. My bill with taxes and tip came to $43. The reason it's 4/5 is they didn't give me enough cheese to dip all my toppings in. I ran out of cheese and still had lots of potatoes and bread left.

W

I am exceptionally happy that Matterhorn exists and I look forward to taking friends and family there in the future. However, the food itself is just fine. The reason it still gets four stars from me is that the atmosphere is INCREDIBLE. They had the entire bar built in Switzerland and shipped over and it shows. There is a tiny train village outside the window. You can sit in a gondola. It is incredible. Again, not the place my wife and I will be going for date night but we were already scheming the many people who would enjoy it for snacks and drinks to just soak in the atmosphere.

Food, service, and atmosphere were amazing. Would highly recommend. However, when we ordered what we thought would be a nice bottle of wine, we came to find they marked up a $15 bottle 640% to $96. Know wine is more always expensive in a restaurant than wholesale, but this felt a bit absurd and unnecessary. Would recommend corkage if you’re drinking wine. Fun experience overall though.

We really enjoyed our experience here! The raclette was really nice, the picked veggies are very few. The portion only had like 3 carrot shavings and a piece of cauliflower with 3 slices of cucumber. The server was nice, but seemed a bit fake/overly friendly. We will definitely be back because of the good cheese and the unique menu for SF. It also felt very authentic swiss. Love it and also highly recommend a visit here.

The fondue is very good. If you're ordering for a company, I recommend ordering several different types. I strongly advise against ordering the ZUGER KIRSCHTORTE (cherry cake). It has too much sponge cake, terrible cream, and only a little cherry sauce and three separate cherries.

Great food, but our server ruined the experience this year. This restaurant has been our go-to spot for my birthday dinner the past three years. The food has always been amazing, and we’ve had consistently great service — until this visit. Unfortunately, our server this time was rude and dismissive from the moment we sat down. He barely acknowledged us, spoke to us curtly when he did, and flat-out ignored our table for long stretches. At one point, a woman came by to clear dishes and she was so friendly and kind that we even joked we wished she had been our server instead. The food was still excellent, as always — but the energy and treatment from our waiter completely killed the vibe of what’s always been a special tradition for us. It was a letdown, and honestly, it made us rethink whether we’ll return next year. Restaurants are more than just food — the experience matters. And this time, we left feeling disappointed instead of celebrated.Great food, but our server ruined the experience

The smell in the place is very potent, and the vibe is nice, very "wood cabin on the hills". That said, the service was lacking (the appetizer looked very unappealing and was placed before us with zero explanations on how to eat it). The food itself is just ok, the pork schnitzel was good, but the rosti felt blend, and the moitie moitie fondue was extremely heavy and tasted almost alcoholic, the items that came with it were also uninspired (simple boiled potatoes, simple bread) Thank god for the pickles.

The ambiance is great, super cute restaurant. The service was great as well. Be aware that their prices are significantly higher than what you see on the menus here. For example, the fondue portions are now $45/each. The deserts were disappointing. We tried both the chocolate fondue and the carrot cake. Other things to know: the sides with fondue are just bread and potatoes, so you are going to want to add things like apples and meats; sodas are by the can, so no refills.

This place is anything but a Swiss restaurant, they pretend to be and are failing miserably. Not going into details but their chef apparently isn’t even able to google Swiss recipes and prepare the dishes accordingly.
