Maru Sushi in downtown San Francisco is a great choice if you’re craving fresh, flavorful sushi right in the middle of the city 🍣. Conveniently located near Powell, it’s an easy stop whether you’re exploring downtown or grabbing a meal before heading home 🚇. The sushi is consistently impressive. I tried the Powell and Go-Go rolls, and both are excellent if you enjoy a crispy, satisfying bite 🔥✨. They deliver that perfect crunch without overpowering the flavors. I also ordered the spicy tuna sushi, which was delicious—fresh, well‑seasoned, and with just the right amount of heat 🌶️. The ambiance is a bit outdated, but it has a slow, relaxed feel that actually makes the meal unhurried and comfortable 😌🪑. It’s not modern or trendy, but it creates a calm, low‑key dining experience that works surprisingly well for a casual sushi night. Service was warm and attentive, though there’s still room for improvement in terms of speed and coordination 😊🕒. Even so, the staff’s friendliness adds to the overall experience. Overall, I’d give Maru Sushi a solid 8/10—great sushi, good value, and a place I’d happily return to for another round of rolls ⭐️.
That’s one of my favorite place in San Francisco! Tasty rolls and sushi , I like oysters most of all! My favorite rolls are Cherryblossom. Good stuff! I will come back again)
Great atmosphere, excellent and fast service. Tried the 49ers and was so good and was debating if I should order 2nd one but I know I can’t finish 2 orders 😅
This place is definitely a little on the pricey side, but honestly? It’s so worth it. The sushi is absolutely amazing — super fresh, beautifully prepared, and surprisingly filling (and I say that as a proud foodie who can really eat). Every piece was packed with flavor and the quality was obvious from the first bite. What really stood out, aside from the delicious food, was how spacious it is. Unlike a lot of sushi spots in SF that can feel cramped or crowded, this place has tons of room. There’s a large sushi bar area where you can watch the chefs work their magic, plus plenty of table seating that’s perfect for groups or parties. It’s a great spot if you’re coming with friends, celebrating something, or just want to spread out and enjoy your meal. The service was also on point — super fast, attentive, and really friendly. Even when it got busy, the staff kept things running smoothly and made us feel welcome the whole time. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but for sushi this fresh and a space this comfortable, I felt like I got great value. I left full, happy, and already planning my next visit. Highly recommend if you’re looking for quality sushi and a great vibe in San Francisco!
Such a nice place for a great sushi dinner! The staff were so attentive and so so nice. The fish was great quality and there are multiple options to choose from! Loved it here!
Love the ambience and the best part is the tasty food. The lady who owns the restaurant was welcoming and treated us like we were in home. Visited few times while staying in the city. My go to place for stir fried noodles and sushi when I visit SFO again
Nice little japanese restaurant by union square. Staff is friendly and food was delicious.
So I came here for a quick lunch. Got chicken karage and a la bamba roll. I really enjoyed all of it. The chicken was crisp and the sauce was good. The roll was super yummy and I could barely taste the cilantro, which was great for me (not a fan). The waitress was super nice and the service was fast, but I did go early afternoon on a weekday. If you need a quick bite I would recommend!
Excellent food, helpful and pleasant staff.
My husband has been here lots of times while traveling for business but this was my first time. They serve wonderfully fresh and delicious fish in a very traditional atmosphere that is lovely. We eat a lot of sushi and sashimi and really appreciate how fresh and beautiful their fish is. I cannot wait to return. I’m not sure what the unfavorable reviews are but suspect people may want a flashier place but this restaurant isn’t about that. It’s about quality and serving beautiful food.
After visiting the best dentist office DSF Dr. joseph in SF. We tried Maru Sushi, it's just one minute away from our dental office. It's not the expensive kind of luxury sushi restaurant. It's more like a 7-11 kind of daily meal sushi restaurant around your house corner in Japan everywhere. The price is very friendly. Service is decent. Food is delicious. Sapporo on tap is superb. I always passing by when I was on a cable car riding the hills. Finally get to try it. Will come back.
Family and I went on a Monday, so the place was almost empty. I ordered the Bento Box w/ 3 items. The portions were just enough to make me satisfied, but not enough to take some to-go. I do not recall which three items I chose, but it is worth noting that you aren't allowed any duplicate items. I also ordered some dragon rolls. A lot of the menu options comes with white rice, salad, and miso soup. The food was delicious. We had a lady serve us and she was very quick to clear our table. I've never seen service that quick. I'd pick up the last sushi roll and she's there to take the plate off our table. I'd finish my miso soup and she's already there to take the bowl. The place was empty, so that could be the reason, but it was still fun to watch. Our table was already cleared before we even paid! I would come back here the next time I come back to San Francisco.
Everytime. I mean every. single. time. I'm in SFO, I always stop at Maru. Awesome fish quality. Pretty varied menu and special fish offerings every now and again.
Delicious dinner combo! A good deal, comes with salad, rice, yummy miso soup for a cold San Francisco night. I chose spicy tuna roll and tofu teriyaki as the main and they were both excellent! Will be back next time we’re in town.
We used to go to FuFu Cafe all the time and were so bummed to see them close. The pan fried pork buns aren't on the menu, but they'll make them for you here and they're just as good as I remember. The staff was very attentive and helpful.
My family and I love coming to this place, and we always bring our friends here too. Everything is always delicious and fresh. We usually order the dumplings, the general Tso’s chicken, hot spicy chicken, pork with green beans. Plates are family style. Please visit fufu! UPDATE… New location is very nice, atmosphere is clean and tidy and much more spacious. Chinese broccoli beef and green beans with pork were still the same great quality if not even better. Wishing great success for this new location!
The restauarant atmosphere was modern, warm and welcoming. We were disappointed that we were seated and given forks but they made up for it with the delicious food. We ordered Pan Fried Pork Buns, Sizzling Beef Short Ribs, Sizzling Pepper Beef, and Hot Spicy Chicken. All four of the dishes were delightful. Most restaurants will have at least one of the four that are just OK but Fu Fu Restauarant hit the spot with all four dishes. The experience was excellent and we will be returning. P.s. They did bring us chopsticks upon request 😉
This restaurant is spacious and has a great atmosphere, perfect for both formal dinners and spontaneous visits. The decor is modern and relaxing, making it a great place to unwind. They also offer a large private room, which is ideal for special occasions or group gatherings. As for the food, we enjoyed a variety of dishes, including Hot Spicy Chicken, Sizzling Beef with Black Pepper, Sizzling Beef Short Rib, and Pan-Fried Pork Buns. Initially, We were concerned the Hot and Spicy chicken was just Kung Pao chicken rebranded but the server assured us it was a separate dish. Also, I somehow ended up with a fork…thanksfully I was provided with a fresh bamboo chopsticks before the meal was brought out! Overall, a great experience with delicious food.
Favorite restaurant in Chinatown! The ladies remember us every time we come in because we only come in a few times a year but order a bunch to go home. Love this place so much and we take everyone that visits us here. All the vegetable dishes are fantastic, excellent sauces, Peking duck is *chef’s kiss* mussels and clams are amazing, I always ask for no spice.
Their menu here is terrific! The kids love their walnut shrimp and I always loved the seasonal vegetables and lobster. Their location usually is not too crowded. Depends on when you get there.Sometimes it can be busy so you want to go here early and it can hold a big crowd too like ten people!I go here every couple of months and always come back for more! I recommend this place to all!
We came here after a concert because it's open until 2:00 a.m. which is very convenient. The staff is very friendly, I picked the spicy chicken which was very soft and flavorful. Big size plate, it would have been enough for 2. My daughter got some seafood noodles, which was good but not all that flavorful. Overall for the service and prices is an excellent place.
Really enjoyed the food here! There was lots of variety. The pork slices were really thick and meaty. The shrimp was very crispy and creamy. The food was overall fresh and delicious. Definitely a good option for shareables and family style food when going out with friends or family. I did order food at the end to-go which took longer than expected. I guess the restaurant was busy. Make sure to order early.
We had an amazing family outing here. We ordered a load of food including the combination fried rice, general tso's chicken as well as the pan fried pork bun. Everything was overflowing with flavor. We could not have asked for a better night out. Customer service was really attentive. Next time in Houston will definitely come back.
Came here for dinner alone for work and they are busy at 9! They could be slightly understaff but they have regulars for sure. The sushi slices are thick! The way I liked it. Overall, great place to have quick dinner.
Very good food but service could use an upgrade. They were nice but slow. The food however made everything worth it. I recommend this place. I will definitely be back.
This is a late night staple for us. Considering their hours, we always come here when we’re having an extra late night dinner. Food has been slightly inconsistent over the years, but delicious nonetheless. If you’re dining at a normal time, there are other better options in the area at similar price points. But for late night dining, nothing I’ve found thus far comes close.
The food here is average. The portion of the food is big, but the tables are really small. After three dishes, the table would be space less. It's pretty busy here. Which waitress would ignore you from time to time. Overall, their noodles and portage would be a better choice than ordering their dishes. If you don't know what to eat while you are passing by, you can give it a try.
great service, all food was delicious. pork dumplings were okay, but star of show was definitely the vegetables. had a great crunch and was delicious. ribs were sweet and had a sweet but savory sauce. lamb was good. combination lo mein was delicious with all the different seafood, love the oyster sauce noodles. came in when it was packed but we still got our food relatively quickly. overall great service and good food.
We had 2 rolls the Lion king and the scallop baked roll, and the kansu bowl. Everything was delicious. Giving it 3 stars due to the price. Just very pricey. I've had just as good rolls at other places for less $$.
I am mostly docking stars for very lacking bizarre behavior of our server (an older woman), who at first did not seem to understand I wanted to make sure what I order is gluten free. Then, once she understood, said “no” to an item that was gf/or easily customizable not to include any. We had to ask for soy/tamari mixing dish. They did have tamari sauce, but she poured me very little and then put it away from us. In general there was a bit of stinginess going on also with the fish pieces that were cut thinner than we are used to. I am a bit confused about it. I would have paid a bit more if it was a cost issue. Same goes for the ginger… When we ordered she over explained (like an adult talking to a toddler on why we don’t wear our boots to bed at night). It was annoying, and I had to do my best not to take it personally. The music was “interesting” and aimed at some person who thought that music was “rad” in the 90s. At least it wasn’t very loud. The food was itself was what you would expect from a sushi restaurant in SF where there are so many restaurants, that any restaurant who wouldn’t serve good food will have no repeat customers. I will not be a repeat customer. But mostly because there are so many other restaurants to check out
The food was incredible. If it was solely based on that then the place is a 5 star, through and through. The service, however, was terrible. It took me stopping the host 3 times to get someone to: bring me a menu, ask for a server, then ask for someone to take my order. There were parties larger than mine that arrived after I did getting their food ordered and served before my food order was even taken. At some point I asked for a clean plate, only to be given another dirty one. Towards the end, someone finally did attempt to provide better service . . . just in time for the check.
Place looks well maintained today was my first day here and I ordered shrimp fried rice, egg rolls and orange chicken it came with its own white rice, 2/3 food was decent but the orange chicken wasn’t it! It barely had any flavor which ruined my meal:/ besides that the shrimp fried rice was a good 8/10 and the egg rolls was 10/10 even though the egg rolls came small.
Friendly service but could improve on the speed. Fried tofu was great but could lower the salt level. Ginger Beef with scallion was tender and excellent. Walnut shrimp was delicious with large shrimps and good mix of walnut and mayonnaise. Soft flat rice noodle with beef and cailan had beautiful texture and the beef was tender. The brisket hot pot was flavorful.
My wife and I were visiting from out of town and staying at. Nearby hotel when we found Maru sushi. We were both excited to eat because it was a long day of traveling. We each ordered an entree, I ordered the Chicken Katsu. Each entree comes with a small salad and miso soup which I ate. Then my chicken came out with a bowl of rice, immediately I smelled something off like there was rotten fish or something. I took and bite and it tasted very off. I had my wife try a sample and we agreed it was no good. We had the waiter come over and told her it was bad, so she said she would remove it from the bill. I didn’t order anything else because I was in a time crunch. When the bill arrives, the chicken itself is removed, but they were trying to charge me for the rice bowl I never touched, the salad and miso soup. Now I did have tue salad and miso soup, not knowing the chicken would be bad. We had the soft spoken waitress come back over, who got the manager for us. We asked the manager why charge for the rice bowl I never touched and the other items not knowing the chicken would be bad. We felt that on principle that the entire entree should have been removed because of the rotten chicken. She refused at first because she said that it was our opinion that the chicken was rotten. We argued back that serving us bad chicken was wrong and that the entire entree should have been taken off the bill. After some loud words, the manager does the right thing and removed the soup, salad and rice. It’s the principle of the fact that if I had that chicken, I may have gotten deathly ill. For chicken to smell like that, it would have to be sitting at room temperature for over 24 hours. That’s not acceptable and it can cost someone’s life in the end.
I ordered the spicy chirashi for take out today. The sashimi was not fresh, they used really cheap ingredients and cheap cuts. Even the lettuce the chirashi was served with was wilting. The “spicy sauce” tasted bad, and when I picked up my order the waitress was grumpy about providing me with soy sauce because she said there was already hot sauce provided. I was not given any wasabi. The worst part is that I immediately came down with awful stomach cramps and a bad case of diarrhea after eating my lunch. All this for a $40 lunch. Worst meal ever. Do not dine here.
Extremely disappointed with the experience we just had. We've been coming to Fufus for years and although the service was slow we were ok with it because of the good food. After a while of not going we were craving it and went back. In an hr of being there we only received 3 of the dishes we ordered, two of them being steamed veggies and friend rice. We had to flag down a manager in order to even get an answer since none of the servers had even come by even tho all the tables around us were being serviced. We decided to pay for the three and leave fearing it would take another hour. We left hungry and upset.
