My husband's cousin and her husband met in this restaurant and they're so nice to bring us here to have a double date with us. We enjoyed the food and drinks. It's just a bit loud inside.
A classic German restaurant with a friendly ambiance! On the recommendation of one of my daughter’s friends, we tried out Suppenkuche located in the safe and revitalized Hayes Valley District , reasonably close to the Civic Center area, on my last night in San Francisco. Both of us were delighted with the experience. Even from the wait outside, one feels the welcoming positive energy of the place. Patrons waiting for a spot were friendly and talkative, adding to the community vibe. When entering, one feels as if one has been magically transported to a Bavarian restaurant in an earlier era. One is seated at large tables along with other guests, and the staff is attentive, and we received superb service and recommendations from Victoria. The menu consists of traditional German options with an upscale and modern twist. Even though the place was packed the owner came by a couple of times to chat and check up on our experience. A small bar at the side of the dining room adds to the classic German restaurant ambiance. Even the men's room displays the classic German beer house feel with a large wooden latch secure the door adding to the old-world authenticity.
This place is special. Have been going here for over 20 years and can say it has also been consistent for 20 years. Excellent quality: fresh (pretzel rolls!) bread, schnitzel, dumpling, omelettes, meatloaf and even the trout is always fantastic. No crappy German beer here, only the good German beer. I'm glad this restaurant has navigated through the SF $$$ problems that basically destroyed the probabilities of survival for most restaurants in the past 25 years.
I've been coming to Süppenküche since it opened in 1990-mumble. I'm so happy that my kids now love it here too. They just devoured all their favorites (frankfurters, potato pancakes, green salad) while my wife had the chicken schnitzel and I had the pork chop special. Good hearty food for a chilly November night! And my Hacker-Pschorr Dunkel was spot on!
Had a good time here ... Great selection of beers, and I had a dark beer I really enjoyed. The food was pretty good ... We got the bread dumpling thing, which was new to me. Service was fantastic, I can't remember our servers name but she was fun. Would definitely go back
Absolutely loved this place for schnitzel in San Francisco. The team here is super friendly and makes you feel right at home. The menu is simple but full of great choices, and the beer selection really impressed me. I even discovered a new favorite on their list. Definitely coming back soon!
A brilliant little neighbourhood place with lovely staff, strong beer, and sausages for days. The food’s nothing fancy—think proper currywurst and sauerkraut—but it hits the spot. Gorgeous lighting inside, especially as the sun goes down, and bonus points for the outdoor record player spinning vinyl. Beer comes in three sizes (go big or go home). Wholeheartedly recommended.
Suppenküche delivers on homemade taste and quality for German comfort food classics, plus a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I grew up on German food, and Suppenküche is the real deal. The food may look simple, but a lot of dishes are quite labor intensive. That’s why it can be hard to find some of these classic dishes in Germany even, unless you’re invited to someone’s home. Take for example the Sauerbraten (my order), which requires marinating meat for multiple days. While it was on the less sour (more mild) spectrum, the meat was very tender. The flavor of the red cabbage (Rotkohl) side was on point (well spiced with Juniper berries) and I could tell the Spätzle were homemade. Everything was well seasoned without being too salty as is common in a lot of restaurants. To end, I had to try the Apple strudel, which is tricky to execute properly and get the perfectly thin crust. It came with vanilla sauce and was not too sweet, perfectly showcasing thin layers of apple with raisins. I can highly recommend this restaurant for a hearty meal, even if you know German food and may be skeptical that it will rival Oma‘s cooking.
Suppenkuche in Hayes Valley is such a fantastic find in Hayes Valley! The vibe inside is super cozy, warm, and friendly—perfect for a relaxed meal. We kicked things off with a bunch of appetizers, and they were all so good. The deviled eggs were creamy and packed with flavor, the messy fries with mushroom gravy were pure comfort food, and the Franks and Brussels sprouts were solid crowd-pleasers. For the main courses, we went with the Wiener Schnitzel and Pork Knuckle, and both were absolutely delicious. The schnitzel was perfectly crispy, and the pork knuckle was tender, juicy, and huge! We left feeling super satisfied and would love to come back in the future. If you’re in Hayes Valley and craving some hearty German food, this is the place.
Traditional and very well executed, delicious German food. Even the sauerkraut, which is usually enjoyed less by my husband, was well received! A very comforting meal! Great selection of German beers as well and so good! We came on a Saturday night, so it was incredibly busy and only outside seating was available. Since it was a mild night outside, we didn't mind and still had a great time. The service took a bit longer than expected, but they were obviously doing their best. Would definitely come back over and over again, but maybe next time not during their peak busy night.
Lovely German resto/bar in the middle of San Francisco. Feels a bit rustic, but has very clean finishes. It is bench seating so you may get seated with others at the table depending how full it gets. Great selection of drinkable beer on tap, I was impressed with the creaminess. Nice change of pace from my regular hoppy ca beer. My wife really enjoyed her cider. An iconic feature is the 1L glass boots you can order. Good food is available too. We can recommend everything we tried: Sausage plate, Spetzle, Deviled Eggs, and a freshly made Pretzel. All of it would be great on its own, but certainly compliments the beer well. Can't wait to come back again!
Great schnitzel option in San Francisco. The staff is always pleasant and welcoming and the menu is straightforward. They have a good beer selection too and I found a favorite of mine in their list. Schnitzel is crunchy and super thin, you can ask for "light fry" which brings it out a bit lighter. Add an egg on top and you'll have a hearty brunch. The pretzel and mustard is always a good starter.
Unbelievable authentic German food accompanied by spectacular service. If you want to try something unique, order the Leberkäse. The beer selection is long and perfectly pairs with all the food.

One of my favorite places to go for a delicious German meal. Would highly recommend the pork knuckle if on the menu. Beer selection is great and the service was friendly.
Fairly authentic German restaurant (verified by my German friend!). Serves many popular homemade style German dishes like schnitzel, potato pancakes, and pretzels, as well as some other dishes popular in surrounding countries like Sachertorte (a delicious Viennese cake!). For beverages, it offers authentic German beer and other drinks. It has a large outdoor seating area that's a good option when it's warm enough. Indoor seating is all communal, so if you come here on a date, you'll likely be sitting next to another couple or two. They only take reservations for groups of 6 or 7, all other group sizes are walk-in only. The acoustics aren't great inside, so it's very loud and it can be difficult to have a conversation with the person you came with.
I recently dined at Suppenküche, and it delivered one of the most authentic German dining experiences I’ve encountered in San Francisco. Located near the Hayes Valley neighborhood, the restaurant captures the atmosphere of a traditional Bavarian beer hall while still maintaining the warmth of a neighborhood gathering place. The interior is lively and communal, with long wooden tables and a bustling dining room that encourages conversation and shared meals. The menu focuses on classic German comfort food built around hearty ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Dishes such as schnitzel, sausages, and slow-cooked meats highlight the rustic character of German cuisine. One of the standout elements of the meal was the careful preparation of these traditional dishes. The schnitzel was crisp and well balanced, with a golden exterior and tender interior that reflected proper technique. Another highlight was the selection of traditional sausages paired with classic sides such as sauerkraut and potatoes. German cooking often relies on simple combinations that emphasize savory depth and satisfying textures. These accompaniments provided the perfect balance to the richer meat dishes and helped create a complete and comforting plate. The restaurant’s beer program also plays a major role in the experience. German cuisine is closely connected to beer culture, and the selection here complements the food very well. Pairing traditional dishes with German-style lagers or wheat beers enhances the overall flavor experience and reinforces the restaurant’s cultural authenticity. Service throughout the meal was attentive and energetic, matching the lively atmosphere of the dining room. Staff members were knowledgeable about the menu and comfortable guiding guests through both the food and beverage selections. Even during busy periods, the service remained organized and welcoming. The overall atmosphere contributes strongly to the experience. Suppenküche feels like a true gathering place where diners can enjoy traditional German food in a lively and communal environment. The restaurant captures the spirit of Bavarian hospitality while fitting naturally within San Francisco’s diverse dining scene. Overall, Suppenküche delivers an authentic and memorable German dining experience with well-prepared traditional dishes, strong cultural identity, and a vibrant beer hall atmosphere.
Great place. Potato pancake fritters were fantastic and crunchy. Sausage was great. Nice beer selection. Mashed potatoes and sauerkraut could use more salt.
The waitress was excellent. Especially delicious favorite beer to choose from. Fast good service. The atmosphere is minimalist German simple style. I didn't like one thing - there were four men sitting next to me who were laughing and talking so loudly that at the next table the restaurant's customers even banged their cutlery on the napkin holder. This spoiled the meal a little - you couldn't hear each other at the table. But of course - sour stewed cabbage with sausages is a true German dish
Absolutely a vibe!! Family-style atmosphere, great beer, good food. There were 2 birthdays the day I went and it was glorious to have the entire restaurant sing along. Their mains are fairly standard, quite on the expensive side, but it's good food to eat along with a drink. They serve a huge variety of beers and I approve of their witbier selection. Come here for a good time. Great place to hang out with a friend or just by yourself!

This is a very classic German restaurant experience. I liked the music from the record player on the sidewalk. Our waiter was veeeeery “chill” to use a word he seemed to like. It took forever to get our check despite asking a few times. The pretzel was good but not as out of this world as Ive been hearing. I liked the kasespetzle and potato pancakes best.
Sadly, this place has really gone downhill lately. It used to be my favorite place in Hayes Valley, and we would come here often. They have simultaneously raised the prices significantly, cut down the menu significantly, lowered the food quality significantly, and saddest of all—removed the Messy Fries from the menu, one of their best and most popular items! At least the beer selection is still good—just don’t come here for the food. It’s not worth it anymore. I don’t know what’s happened to them. Original review below: Gosh, I just love this place so much! The food and beer are absolutely delicious and authentically German. Coming from the Midwest, it’s hard to find a good German establishment in the Bay Area, but this one is the best I’ve experienced so far! The service is a bit sub-par, which is why I’m giving it 4/5 stars, but I’m sure they’ll improve as life returns to normal. The food and drink here make my soul so happy!
